Ridley Scott made a universally great movie here, by sticking to traditional themes, and picked a setting which still echoes through time. This passed the reaction test completely.

Oliver Reed died three weeks before principal photography ended. Because Proximo was considered a key character, a clause in the movie's insurance contract would have allowed the filmmakers to re-shoot all of Reed's scenes with another actor at the insurer's expense, about $25 million. However, most of the actors and crew were exhausted from the punishing schedule, and Sir Ridley Scott did not want to cut Reed from the movie. The script was rewritten, and a body double and CGI were used to give Reed's character a plausible resolution.

I don't want to sound cruel but Gladiator is a better movie because Oliver Reed died (more expensive to make, yes) but the whole Maximus's friend saying "I will see you again but not yet" (originally Proximo was supposed to be the last man in front of the camera) and other little pieces regarding Maximus's black friend who is more likeable than Proximo were only put in to make up for the loss of Proximo.

They might be interested to know that, although the story is fictional, some of the characters were real. Commodus was a real Emperor, and he really did fight in Gladiatorial arenas (although he fixed his fights by giving his opponents wooden weapons). There is no evidence that he murdered his father to become Emperor, though. Indeed, he was already ruling the Empire anyway due to his father's failing health. He was described by contemporary historians as cowardly and stupid, and his rule was noted for many acts of wanton cruelty.
Maximus himself is a purely fictional character. But is a composite of several real life individuals.
Joaquin Phoenix is indeed an incredible actor and has a show stealing performance here, while Russel Crowe always has a kind of rugged, everyman charm.

The actor playing Proximo (Oliver Reed) passed away shortly after finishing his scenes. There is an on-screen dedication to him that reads "In loving memory of Oliver Reed", but there's another amazing thing about this movie that many people don't know about.
In the original version of the film it was Proximo who was supposed to betray Maximus in the end, but it would make his character too unlikeable. Not an image you would like to leave behind of an actor who has just died.
So some movie scenes were reshot, others were changed. The whole scene where Proximo is freeing Maximus at night while soldiers are fighting against gladiators - that's not Oliver Reed, its a man that looks like him from a distance. The moment when Proximo unlocks the bars and exchange a few words with Maximus, if you pay close attention light on Proximo's face doesn't look exactly right - that's because it was Oliver Reed's face taken from another scene and digitally superimposed on the face of his "double".
The moment where soldiers are about to stab Proximo to death - he is filmed from behind as they are closing in, but when he says "Shadows and dust" while it cuts to his face, that bit was taken from when they were in the Colosseum and he said those exact words to Maximus.
Seems like simple enough changes, but you must remember that digital effects were not cheap, or easy in 1999. Reshooting all the other scenes and re-cutting the movie just to give Oliver Reed a better send-off cost millions of dollars, but that's what the director decided that should happen - Thank you Mr Scott.

A digital body double was created for the remaining scenes involving actor Oliver Reed's character Proximo (the old gladiator) due to Reed's death during production. Reed died from a heart attack during a break from filming Gladiator in Valletta, Malta, on the afternoon of 2 May 1999. According to witnesses, he drank eight pints of German lager, a dozen shots of rum, half a bottle of whiskey and a few shots of Hennessy cognac, in a drinking match against a group of sailors on shore leave from HMS Cumberland at a local pub. His bar bill totaled a little over 270 Maltese lira (almost 450 GBP; about 590 USD). After beating five much younger Royal Navy sailors at arm-wrestling, Reed suddenly collapsed, dying while en route to hospital in an ambulance. He was 61 years old

It is not un-manly to FEEL and to CARE... don't ever let anyone convince you otherwise. As you said, superb acting both from Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix. Great direction by Ridley Scott (who also directed "Alien" and "Blade Runner") and an unforgettable soundtrack by Hans Zimmer. The film also teaches us some valuable leadership lessons, the main of which is that leadership is not a position (a leader can never be appointed) but the result of someone's integrity, strength and courage and something that is always earned in the eyes of the people who choose to follow that person.

The actor who plays Tigris of Gaal (the gladiator in the gold mask) is also in "Conan the Barbarian". A great movie.

Russell Crowe never disappoints. Among his huge portfolio, there are two movies that I LOVE with him: "A Good Year" and "L.A. Confidential". Your reactions to these two movies would be most appreciated! I really enjoy your reactions. Much better than many, trust me!! 🙂

I still cant wait for them to watch Kingdom of heaven or Last Samurai or Schindler List. Historical movies I think are great for people who may not have the greatest understanding of the past or other cultures. We are hear because you guys come remote places and experiencing a life you may not have seen without internet. Good job

Try watching the science fiction movie called "Independence Day".
Also similar to "Gladiator" is the movie "Kingdom of Heaven".
