That's either "The Little Train Who Could" or that crew is determined to stick to the schedule regardless of the location of the other 200 cars. I bet they made killer time!
Possibly. I live between Belen NM and ABQ on the old ATSF mainline. There is a daily intermodal train that runs from Belen to Albuquerque and although it’s never usually this short it is funny to watch two gevos pulling a 5 car intermodal train at 60+ mph.
my only guess as to why this happened, is that the Intermodel cargo was originally supposed to be connected to another train's consist, but it was accidentally left behind at the train yard, so UP chose to bring the cargo to the train it was initially supposed to be connected to and then head back.
Nope. These things happen more than you realize. Whether the car was accidentally not added to the train or the trailer was delayed, getting to the yard for loading, if it’s hot enough, they will get it to its destination.
@@NorCaliRailroading2023 A friend of mine is an engineer and he said there's been multiple times cars were not coupled to his train. The shortest trains I ever saw were on the ultraold Michigan Central Railroad that ran from Detroit to Mackinaw City until the late '60s. I saw probably 5 trains that had just 1 engine, probably a GP7 or GP9, one freight car, and a caboose. This was in 1964. There were a few trains that had just 2 engines and a caboose. Man, I miss cabooses.
There is a photo of a CSXT train in Buffalo, NY with 2 locomotives and only one container car in a Railpace magazine from a few years ago. I once talked to a former Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad Locomotive engineer who had to bring an urgent railcar into Buffalo very quickly and he had 2 locomotives and only one car, and he said sometimes these extremely short mainline through trains are actually called “ Peddler freights “ !
This happens more times than people may realize. It's quite a few reasons, its not because it's a hot delivery. They would just truck it to the designation, its quicker than train. There are a few reasons i have seen this happen. 1. The power on regular assigned trains must make the turn around. I.e. chicago to Virginia at times can be the same power for Virginia to chicago. 2. They have a pickup at the next destination and will keep picking up and setting off. Until they reach the final terminal. 3. They maybe just taking the power and car to a satellite yard
Its funny what a railway will do for JB hunt and Schneider....when i worked at IC they sent me out with 3 locomotives and 1 89 foot flat with a then new Schneider 48 foot trailer....
You probably don't want to know whats on those containers. Sometimes the DOD will have a high priority load and it gets shipped like this. I've seen it a few times and was told "its just better not to ask what that was"😅

Well actually, you have to have a minimum of 12 axles in order to run track speed over RR crossings. 1 loco + 1 car = 10 Axles, therefore, you must approach every crossing at grade prepared to stop until the gates activate. 2 locos + 1 car = 16 Axles, hiball!
Either that or they left their load behind and are rushing back to the yard to drop off that wagon that you saw and then they will then return to get the rest of the load and then continue on to their destination in the opposite direction…
