This was a TRUE "blast from the past." One of the most classic, beautiful songs ever recorded! I haven't thought of the Platters in so long. It was GREAT to hear this again. (I had no idea the song was as old as it is. I thought it was recorded in the 60's. But I wouldn't be born until a year after this came out. Wow!) Their music was on the radio a lot through the 60's, as I recall, but I don't think I heard anything about them, too much, after that. What a shame. They were SO talented! Loved your reaction!

Wow ! You really went back on this one! The Platters were Black royalty, along with the Ink Spots and the Flamingos back in the '50's and had unparallelled crossover success which, undoubtedly inspired Berry Gordy to strive for the same with his Motown artists! The group had 40 charting singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart between 1955 and 1967, including four number-one hits. The Platters are one of the first African-American groups to be accepted as a major chart group and are one of the most successful vocal groups in the world! As you said Tony Williams' voice was clear and operatic and you must also experience their "My Prayer", "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" and "Washed Ashore."

Brings Tears to The Eyes. The Platters from 1955 to about 1960 are the best years. As you know I'm sure most of the groups and individuals of that time and some over the years had their start rooted in the church choir.
Clean and Clear with harmony of sound and movement. Heartfelt. Soulful. Conveying the song empathetically to the listener. Practicing during the week in the church basement for Sunday Morning Worship.
Thank You Jesus for the Gifts you Give.

I was 2b in 1955 and remember this playing on the radio, Mum loved the Platters and I do too. The lead singers voice is wonderful, so controlled and emotional plus you can hear every word so clearly. Your reactions are so lovely to watch Jayvee and they looked like they blew you away. Peace and love to you all, God bless you Mary-Ellen UK

I use to play this record on what my Mom called the stereo. It was one of her favs. Also smoke gets in my eyes. Thanks for the memories. I wish I could listen to this again with my Sweet Moma.

Tony Williams had a beautiful tenor voice. Very unique and special and clean. That “uh-oh” became the hallmark of his songs! Every young person and teenager bought their records! They are all brothers, sister and cousins. I had the great opportunity to meet them when I was about 7. Sadly, Tony committed suicide in his 30’s.

You found the Platters, YAY! Garsh, I'm old. Actually I consider myself lucky. I remember hearing the Platters, Nat King Cole, etc. I used to hear big band music and swing; Count Basie, Benny Goodman, etc. even though my teen years were late 60s and 70s, Beatles and stuff. But, there's a 20 year span between myself and my oldest sibling, so I got to hear their music and loved to watch them dance the boogie woogie in the living room

The Platters were an iconic vocal group in their time. This song made number 18 in the UK chart in 1957. They had nine songs thst had chart success in the UK. "Smoke gets in your eyes" hit the number one spot both sides of the pond in 1959 and was used in the early 1970's TV commercial for heater fuel. Great to hear it again and to see your reaction to this 1950's classic.

The Platters were one of my Dad’s favorite groups. He would play their records and got me to love them as much as my parents did. They have a truly classic sound.

Yes! Now reaching into real early history of great music. The guy that introed them is the great DJ Alan Freed who played this great music against the acceptance of the radio stations of that time. He gave black singers an open chance to show off their greatness against the grain.
    He died young also.
