Yup!!!!! We have always been more united than the media leads us to believe. This musically release was MAGIC and EVERYONE supported it and loved it!! Great memories, I remember the day it was released.
This was Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones getting everyone who was anyone in the music business at the time to donate their talent on a record where all the proceeds would go to help feed people in Africa.
Except for the song that inspired this song. The original song to raise money for Africa. "Do they know it's Christmas". Link below if you haven't heard it th-cam.com/video/bjQzJAKxTrE/w-d-xo.html
DarkHero Don’t be so insular, mate. It’s a very unattractive quality. If it wasn’t for Bob and Midge this song would never have been thought of, let alone seen the light of day. ☮️
Maybe I commented this before, but did anybody recognize Harry Belafonte in the last row of the choir... He was also one of the GOAT. His daughter also!!! Please respect them!!!
I just found out today that that last long bit of Stevie and Springstreen was because when they were wrapped, Quincy Jones realized they didn't have enough tape for the entire video, and they stayed behind to help out. I think Bruce was already gone but turned around and went back in to help anyway. Stevie is even wearing different clothes than in the rest of the video. The passion, man.
TV and radio Worldwide! I’ve been trying to find a video or something where it’s documented online. Since it was in ‘85 though, I’m not having much luck. 😕
We had 4 radios in different parts of our house tuned to different stations when they all played this song...we cranked them all up! When it was over, we went outside, and almost all of our neighbors were out talking about it, too. Amazing.
No egos, No pretentions, No need to be the center of attention, Just amazing singers at the top of their careers, singing simply, for compassion & love ❤️
I was noticing that the whole video, none of them seem concerned about themselves or singing to impress anyone. If they took modern popular artists and did this, I don't know if they'd be able to put their egos aside.
There were plenty of egos around then too. That's one of the things that made this stand out. You couldn't have put a similar package together for a commercial project at gunpoint.
This song is proof, that you can take amazing singers from different genres, different singing styles, different vocal abilities, different music abilities, different backgrounds, different races, different levels of success, & more than likely different points of view, yet when put together, for a cause that is dear to their hearts, there is absolutely *NO* difference whatsoever!!! 💗 **THIS SONG IS PURE MAGIC, & STILL GIVES ME GOOSEBUMPS AFTER ALL THESE YEARS** 💗
I agree with you 100%. I read somewhere, that John Denver very much wanted to be a part of this, but was not asked to join these other great voices. If they had wanted to include all possible great voices at the time, mid-1980s; then, including John Denver would have made perfect sense. It was said by someone close to John Denver, it hurt him the rest of his life not to be asked to be included.
@@kayblock-bourghs8285 Oh, I am so sad to hear this, and never had any idea? Do you know why he was not asked, as I agree with you, he would have been an amazing addition 💓💓💓
@@sandyleewhite It's been quite a while since I read about it. I believe John Denver's management contacted someone, who was arranging for the singers to participate. I think they were told, that his voice & style of music wouldn't fit this song. It's such a shame, because they did include such a variety of singers. To me, even if they didn't give him a solo spot, he certainly should have been with the others for group choral parts.
@@kayblock-bourghs8285 I really don't understand that, if that was their reasoning, because there are Country & Folk singers in this song? It really is a shame though, because John Denver along with Karen Carpenter, have the most organic, natural, and beautiful voices, that I feel would be an amazing addition to any song......RIP John Denver, we miss you, and your golden voice 💖💖💖
We Need A Song For The Stress In This Country/ The World Today! Something That Feel Good And Reminds Us All That We Are All Truly One! Like This Song Did!
This is one that can never be repeated! So many iconic artists together here. Sadly some aren’t with us anymore. This is a treasure & a gift to us all ♥️ talent overload!!!
coco d Hi yes I noticed that, I also love him. I also noticed Dan Aykroyd which surprised me because he wasn’t a singer but he did sing as in The blues brothers. Just so many talented artists together. ✌🏻
WmTRiker Hi, you really nailed it on that! It’s amazing to see them all together performing. We still have some awesome singers but I don’t think they could pull it off with all the legalities & contracts etc. things are so different now than they were then. ✌🏻
Actually was Michael Jackson that convinced then to join... Quincy Jones achieve to make then all be humble and sing just parts of the music and backing vocals...
The last two men you didn't recognise singing were James Ingram with the beard, and the legend Ray Charles with the sunglasses & red shirt. You definitely need to do 'Ray Charles - Hit the road Jack on Saturday Live 1996'
I have watched at least 25 Reactions to _We Are the World_ and yours wins the prize for knowing the most singers. The way your eyes and face lit up brought me so much joy. Thank you for doing this Reaction... from a 60-year old grandma who saw the debut on MTV.
Don't forget to recognize Quincy Jones, the director and producer of this. His career spans everyone from Frank Sinatra to Michael Jackson. A true talent. Some of those you didn't recognize: Diana Ross, Cindy Lauper, Kim Carnes, Kenny Loggins, Huey Lewis, Bob Dylan, Hall and Oats, James Ingram, Al Jarreau. You got a lot of them though
And Cyndi just kills her part. I remember the first time I saw this i was a teenager & I cried from just the magnitude of the artist and the message. Every single singer blew me awayyyy....
Yes we are all one ... but some are much much much richer than everyone else and could wipe out world poverty without it denting their bank balance but instead they sing along in their self congratulatory way 'oh look at us we have given an hour of our time to record this fabulous song to get the poor people to buy the record to end hunger' ... and yet it still goes on ....
@@euronick61 come on youre blaming these artists for that? They are not the scummy faceless greedy soulless corporations and corrupted politicians running this planet
This was a BIG thing when it came out. Still blesses my heart. People coming together in unity. My God the voices here. So great to see you watch this. ❤🗺❤ There is but one race... the human race.
There were so many famous people and some who were use to special treatment. That there was a sign at the entrance to the studio say "check your ego at the door". But they turned out an amazing song.
They left the Grammy!s went straight over to do this. They were given their parts and very little rehearsal and were able to achieve this fantastic song .
That Stevie Wonder / Bruce Springsteen combination is absolutely incredible!! Two very unique and powerful voices combining to create something beautiful. Breathtaking!! Side note: Please take a moment to respect those artists who helped perform this song who are sadly no longer with us. God speed, and thank you for the music!
The duets are all so cool, and on the whole, very different styles of artists. Paul/Kenny, Tina/Billy, Dionne/Willie, Huey/Cyndi/Kim: none of them should really work, but they're all magnificent.
This song helped to change the direction of my life back in the early ‘80’s. I’ve spent 30 years living and working in Africa as a humanitarian since that time. I still cry when I hear this song! Thank you for playing!
The 80s was an amazing time for music. My favorite Christmas song is "do they know it's Christmas time" by band aid. It has all the greats and it's an amazing message.
You have to understand this was the night of the Grammy's and after the Grammy's all of these legends went to a studio at the request of Michael , Lionel and or Quincy Jones and made this song that move not only a country but the world. We don't have that today. I'm so glad you and a few others do reactions and experience the music so many of us grew up with . Thank you very much.
That was after American Music Awards ceremony......rest is correct. All night recording song.....and as a part of it we get as well an hour video with Jane Fonda as a presenter of the night recording session. I absolutely love either song and Making of "We are the world". That was truly unique🥰🥰
Easily your best reaction. A year or two ago you wouldn’t of know who any of them were! Great job 👏 The famine in Ethiopia was in 1984 and a charity song was made at Christmas time in the uk called ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ Well worth a reaction too. It features lots of British & Irish singers you’ll recognise. As it’s a Christmas song you may want to wait a few months, up to you lol. The USA for Africa song came out in 1985, the same year as Live Aid. I don’t know about the US but here in the uk there have been many different charity songs over the years including 3 other versions of Do They Know It’s Christmas?!
We were! Watching this I miss those days and realize how far backward we’ve gone and it makes me sad. Everyone was accepted... no matter race, color or creed.
What are you talking about? Not long ago, people were separated by color, use of n word was much more common. I don't see how things are any worse now, just more obvious with the technology today.

In the long history of music, there has never been a collection of iconic singers performing together like this. This was a one time event that cannot be duplicated again in our lifetimes, nor in lifetimes to come...This is the performance that should be put in a time capsule to be savored by those who come after us.
I was just thinking I'm sure the Carpenters would have been there had Karen survived. That voice! I'm just as sure about Elvis and I mean absolutely no disrespect to him but Carpenters were more in my timeframe and Karen was a beast on those drums too. R.I.P. to BOTH! ❤
I can't tell you how moved I was watching your reaction. Im 48. I remember when they did this. And to see someone your age truly appreciate the talent of the musicians and the importance of the cause. BTW they did redid it more recently. Jaime Fox put it together. Has all recent artists in it. It is good as well.
I get chills EVERY TIME I hear this song, and sometimes it brings me to tears. Great musicians❤️❤️❤️. They all look like they are having a great time, so much fun❤️❤️❤️
@@joychuasihan12 Not really......Jackson and Ritchie shared the responsibility; In 1985 Richie wrote “We Are the World” with pop icon Michael Jackson to raise money for African famine relief; the song generated some $50 million in donations and received a Grammy for song of the year.
LOL Some 35 years later and it still makes me laugh that when they do the shots of the choir, you see all these legendary singers....and Dan Akroyd 😆 My favorite part of the song though is when Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen are bouncing off of each other towards the end, though. Stevie's perfectly silky smooth voice contrasts so well with Bruce's "whiskey poured over gravel" growl. It works perfectly.
The Stevie-Bruce parts gave me goosebumps "back then" and still today. I'm grateful that all these artists gave their time and talent to get together on the SAME day. 💖
Can honestly say I have never watched this without shedding tears, both for the subject matter and the truly amazing voices coming together...unforgettable
Lionel was called in by Quincey when Michael had actually completed most of the song. Michael's thing was always to let others shine as you can tell because every soloist is given the perfect part. Incredible.
That's incorrect. Lionel Richie was part of the project pretty much from the start. It's just that when Michael Jackson learned about the project, he told Richie he didn't want to just sing it, he wanted to be a part of the writing too. They agreed, and planned wrote the song together. It's just that MJ is MJ, and (according to MJ's sister) wrote pretty much the whole song by himself, before Richie arrived. Kind of like "let's prepare something so that we have a base version for when Richie arrives, so that we can work on it immediately", but the base version was so good that it's pretty much the final version.
This was a joy to watch your surprise every time a different icon starts singing. “Paul? Kenny?” This came out when I was nine and I did not know half of the singers but they are the most iconic voices of the 80’s. I’m glad you liked this one.
I was10 years old when these guys, most of them my idols, recorded this song. It was huge at that time, I cried everytime I heard it and I cried with you again know, this is pure emotion! 🥰♥️🥰♥️🥰
On the 23rd October 1984 the BBC news had a report by corresponent Michael Buerk on the developing famine in Ethiopa, following three years of drought and a civil war. Up to seven milliion people were at risk of starvation if nothing was done. Watching the news that evening was Bob Geldof, the lead singer of the Irish punk band the Boomtown Rats. Bob was so moved by the news report and the apparent lack of action by the various affluent economies of the world, that he felt he had to do something. As a musician he thought perhaps he could organise a charity record to raise funds to send food to the millions affected by the famine. With the help of his friend Midge Ure (the lead singer of Scottish pop band Ultravox) Bob bullied and cajoled as many famous pop stars as he could to perform on the record. Being based in the UK and wanting to get the record released asap, Bob and Midge mostly concentrated on rounding up bands based in the UK, with the proviso that anyone who participated gave their time for free. The recording took one day, the 25th November 1984, and the 'super group' was named Band Aid, and the song called Do They Know It's Christmas. Included in the recording were bands and musicians such as Kool & the Gang, Bono from U2, Phil Collins, Banarama, Boy George & Culture Club (Bob famously phoned Boy George, who was in New York at the time, and told him to get his arse onto the next Concorde flight to London), Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran, George Michael, Sting, Paul Weller, Status Quo. The single was released on the 3rd December 1984 and went straight to number 1 in the UK. It sold over 2 million copies worldwide. USA For Africa was co-ordinated by Harry Belafonte and Ken Kragen, inspired by the success that Bob and Band Aid had had in the UK, but this time using the cream of American talent at that time. The song We Are The World was recorded on the 21st January 1985, and released on the 7th March 1985. Bob Geldof travelled to Ethiopia to see how the funds raised by Band Aid were being spent, and realised that what had been raised should not be a one-off contribution. So using the same drive, blarney, bullying and downright fibs, he cajoled the biggest bands of the early Eighties to perform in two synchronised concerts to carry-on the fund raising for the millions affected by the famine - one in London and one in Philadelphia, for the first time using multiple satillites to live stream live concerts to virtually every country in the world. Live Aid took place on the 13th July 1985. Bob Geldof has since become an activist for sustainable development to help the poorest in Africa. He has also been given an honorary knighthood by the Queen for his charitable work. The BBC report can be seen here: th-cam.com/video/XYOj_6OYuJc/w-d-xo.html It's not an easy watch.
Quincy Jones wrote, arranged and produced this, with all of the most popular singers at the time. He had only one demand for all of them when they arrived at the studio to make this video: "CHECK YOUR EGO's AT THE DOOR because this is more important than all of us." IOW's no complaints about the size of your parts.
@@stennieville Thanks for the corrections guys, I knew Q produced and arranged it, and he did tell all of the performers to check their egos at the door. I just assumed he wrote it too, but I stand corrected. Thanks for the feedback and correction, lest anyone be misled.

No country can seriously claim to be the greatest in the world when it does not even look after the health of its own people properly and that applied to America even prior to the virus. It just goes to show though that you can brainwash people if you spout nonsense often enough.

@@kaiakreations I just put requests in the comment section and hope Jay will do it if enough people give a thumbs up. Jay notices who his long time subscribers are, who comments often, and if their requests are usually popular and they have a good taste in music. So request away and he should do it. Good luck
Yes! You hit the nail on the head. Each one has their own unique voice. Most of them would not have careers today because record labels rarely value talent anymore.
To be fair, it was one of the fears of the producers, and they warned the artists about it in advance, to leave their ego at the door. Sadly, a very big name refused the collaboration... Prince.

I love how much you liked the Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen part as it was improved. After everyone left they realized the length wasn't long enough and guy had Stevie's number on hand so he called him into the studio and Bruce was close enough he came back and they adlibed that part and stuck it into the song to extend it to the right length.
I can't be sure... I wasn't there... but to my ears, after watching the documentary.... it sounds like they may have also improved Kenny, and AL.... In the documentary.... each take Kenny sounded like he needed to clear his throat...and each time they went around rehearsing I never heard THIS version (in this video) from Kenny or AL in the documetary... Same with Stevie... (but as you said they improved that by bringing him back in.)

“Who is that?” was the great Ms. Diana Ross imo one of the great voices of the 20th century, originally the lead singer of The Supremes.
I'm so crushing on her in this video haha, such a beauty
I'm shocked at how many reactions to this that people don't know who she is.....
Stevie and Bruce moving in for the kill at the end.

Yeah but they all held their own, Ray Charles, James Ingram, and I have to admit, even Bob Dylan.
@@mrdandrea James Ingram never gets the recognition he deserves. He killed it.
The passion, man.
definitely.....they were amazing together in that duet.....
When this song was released all of the radio stations played it simultaneously...magic!
I remember that!
Amazing.
That's what I miss about life before social media
@@sp8813 social media = no synchronization? .. what
No egos, No pretentions, No need to be the center of attention, Just amazing singers at the top of their careers, singing simply, for compassion & love ❤️
I was noticing that the whole video, none of them seem concerned about themselves or singing to impress anyone. If they took modern popular artists and did this, I don't know if they'd be able to put their egos aside.
@@jordanhester4821 It's sad to admit, however, I think you are right, with the majority of modern day artists......
Well it's great publicity too
There were plenty of egos around then too.

The BBC report can be seen here: th-cam.com/video/XYOj_6OYuJc/w-d-xo.html

No one was the "star" no one wanted to be the "star" they all came together for a purpose greater than themselves.
To be fair, it was one of the fears of the producers, and they warned the artists about it in advance, to leave their ego at the door.
Sadly, a very big name refused the collaboration... Prince.
@@daedalron that's isn't really the story, but okay
@@kishad1542 how tf do u know that man
@@daedalron there is some videos of them filming this and they keep having to do some parts over several times and everyone seems very helpful with each other.
I don't know , it's probably been mentioned, but all of this was a UK concept Bob Geldof and Midge Ure got music stars together and sang, DO THEY KNOW ITS CHRISTMAS, then the 2 live concerts from London & Philadelphia grew from this
I was a high school senior when this came out. I didn't fully appreciate the sheer amount of talent in that ensemble. I'm glad I grew up.
I never knew this, thanks!👍
My favorite part, this one and Cindy Lauper. Both give me chills every time 🙌🏾
I can't be sure...
JayveeTV: That was beautiful, man! Your reaction and the song were just soul moving. I was getting the chills from how cool this is, then I heard Stevie Wonder singing like I've never heard before. That brought tears to my eyes. The words needs this in 2020. The United States of America needs this in 2020.
Damn shame you aren't familiar with Stevie Wonder's music: Music of My Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions, Fulfillngness' First Finale, Songs in the Key of Life, Hotter Than July, In Square Circle. I have all of those on vinyl. (I only ever played them once - and recorded them onto cassette tape so I could enjoy them whenever. I have over 400 albums that I've only played once - including We Are the World.)
As an oldie who grew up in the 80s, it warms my heart that you recognize so many of the singers in this video.
This song was the USA response to Band Aid- “do they know it’s Christmas” which was all English artists . Would love to see you do that one
I prefer the Band Aid song.
Band Aid...1984 thanx to Bob Geldof..and he also inspired and helped the Americans..to make this awesome megasong.. :)
My favorite Christmas song!!
seriously I never got the connection that Do they know it’s Christmas is from England and We Are The World from the US, thanks 😂 I personally love the DTKIC version from 2014 more than the original, but WATW is just the best thing ever done 🙌🏼
Oh my, Javonne! Your reaction videos are priceless and uplifting! You really know how to appreciate the music of yester-years! Keep pumping them out! God! I appreciate you so much as a 65 years young woman from Montana!
Love this. This was released at the same time as Do They Know Its Christmas by Band Aid in 1984 to raise money for Africa. Live Aid took place the following year.
Yep, and "Do They Know It's Christmas" was the UK artists song.
Linda Stevenson Not quite. This song was released in 1985.
@@turdferguson400 you got me there. Did you Google that 🤣
Linda Stevenson 😂😂😂 I didn’t need to in this case. I remember those years very well. 💖🥰😍
This also inspired Willie Nelson to start Farm Aid, which I think he still does every year.
In 1984 - there was DO THEY KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS? by Live Aid. Same concept with many recording stars coming together for a worthy cause.
So impressed of your knowledge of musicians from “back in the day”. Impressive. Thanks for taking me back to this...your reactions are genuine and expressive. I feel you...
This is your best reaction ever! Always makes me smile and emotional seeing others react for the very first time. We'll never see such legends together ever again. We're all blessed to see this really. Thank you my brother...Bruce and Stevie is legendary baby.
James Ingram he is great also he was one of them singing by himself
James is the singer before Tina Turner.
Quincy Jones is the director!
Yes I loved him✌️
Take a listen to Bandaid, “Do they Know It’s Christmas”.
YES!!!! !! !
My favorite holiday song ever
@@TheRealTrididos My personal favorite is "Happy Christmas" by the late, great John Lennon, but yeah, "Feed the world..."
Honestly, Bandaid has aged much better than this song... still a Xmas fave...
He should do that one in December.
After it aired on tv most of us listened to it over and over and over! The ability to select and put that set of voices together was pure genius!
The first one you asked about was James Ingram, then there was Al Jareau, then you missed Huey Lewis,(without the News) next was Cyndi Lauper and Kim Carnes, Did you notice Dan Akroid and Harry Belafonte in the background choir, also there were the other four Jackson brothers and Latoya, also Bette Midler can be seen. Kenny Loggins is there too. Of course Quincy Jones is directing! My understanding is that after an awards show all of those stars just went next door to the sound stage and recorded this! Thank you for allowing me to sit in with you again today! Fabulous reaction!
