I spent roughly 250$ upgrading the SSD on my MacBook Pro 13 from early 2015. For that amount, I changed the battery, swapped the 128GB stock SSD for a 1TB NVMe, changed the thermal paste and added thermal pads to help with cooling. My MacBook runs like new and I can't even describe how liberating it is to have 1TB after living 7 years with only 128GB 😂
purchased this from Craigslist recently for $120. It came with 8GB of RAM & 250GB SSD. I updated the OS to Ventura using the Open Core Legacy Patcher. Overall, it's a good backup laptop for what I need.
I like upgrading older MacBooks. My current project is a mid 2012 13" MacBook Pro that now has a new battery, 500GB SSD, and 16GB of RAM. It runs macOS Catalina natively, and I'm very happy with it.
I think the external SSD enclosure is so that you can just plug the old drive in to the outside of the MacBook and transfer its data onto the new one
Because of this video I purchased a 2017 MacBook Air from Amazon. I really appreciate the content on this channel as a dad haha

Based on his video, I also got a MacBook Air in early 2015, 8GB of ram and 256 GB SSD and to my surprise, it was in mint condition for a total of $226 from Amazon. Also was able to upgrade it to Monterrey. Thanks for the tip.

I have the 13-inch version from 2017, currently running latest MacOS. It originally had 128GB SSD, which is ridiculously low. It has an SD card slot; I used it with a flush-fitting micro-SD card adapter. The one I have is from BaseQi, purchased from Amazon (current price $25). I used it for data storage while keeping internal SSD mostly free for just the OS and apps. That worked fine for my needs. As the price for micro-SD went down, I upgraded from 256 to 400GB, and recently 1TB. When MacBook needed a new battery, I did the DYI upgrade you show and also gave it a 1TB internal SSD from OWC. So, it now has LOTS of storage.
Your contents keeps getting better as you know how to provide topics of interest for us mere normal owners of Mac products. I can’t afford M1 or M2 so these videos on older technology, how to refurbish and extend their lives are what we need. It also keeps good hardware out of our dumps. You and Miani are my favorites- for the everyday man and everyday Dad!
Enjoyed the video. I love iFIXIT tools. I upgraded the 256GB SSD on my 15" Mid 2015 MacBook Pro to 1TB and replaced a noisy left cooling fan using iFIXIT tools. I bought the fan and OWC drive (drive only) on Amazon. I created a bootable USB drive and used that to get it up and running, then restored the apps and data from my external SanDisk TimeMachine backup. Worked a treat it did.
I also upgraded a 2017 13" MacBook Air SSD from 128GB to 1TB. Both upgraded computers are being used daily.
I have a 16" 2020 M1 Pro MacBook Pro but the keyboard, the best since 2015, is still too noisy to sit in bed and type on it while my wife goes to sleep. The keyboard on the 2015 is much quieter and doesn't interfere with her going to sleep.
Can i install the 1TB on the Apple MacBook Air 11" (Early 2015) ?
I have the same 11" MBA, and upgraded it to a 2tb NVME. I use it when I travel internationally (cough...cough...China) when I think the wifi security is suspect. I use a separate iCloud account, without any personal info on it, and factory reset the device after coming home each time. May sound/read as paranoid, but cautious none-the-less.
One of the reasons why upgrade/repairability is so important.
But Apple in their infinite wisdom is doing everything in their power to wiped out everything that's even remotely consumer friendly...

I absolutely think being able to fix and work on my own stuff is important, I wish we could get to a better balance of repairability but also the highest end tech that apple's been releasing recently.
@@TheEverydayDad Yeah, just imagine if Apple would build a Framework Laptop or Fairphone. They could easily design repairable and modular devices with a sharp design language. But sadly, corporate greed is the only thing Apple stands behind...

I think the ssd enclosure is for copy the other drive and don’t have to reinstall macOS

Pretty sure you could have restored it from apple's cloud recovery. It would just need wifi, not another mac.
Here is how to use macOS Internet Recovery:
Shut down your Mac.
Hold down Command-Option/Alt-R and press the Power button.
This won't work on 2TB drives on a macbook that old. Internet recovery makes it download the version of macOS that came on the macbook. Old versions of macOS couldn't read drives that big, so the installer needs to be... catalina i think, but I am not at all sure... or newer.
My 2014 MBA has a 512 ssd and dual boots OS X and windows 10 , so handy
I might try dual booting this with windows, seems like a great way to get even more versatility out of it.
I wish my M1 MacBook Air had the ability to be upgraded after purchasing it. I had to spend extra on my laptop to get 16 GB of ram and the 1 TB SSD, not necessarily because I needed it, but just to future-proof it long enough just in case if I do need that amount of storage and ram in the future.
I've got a 2015 13" i7 macbook air that is still hanging on and just begging for a new battery and more storage.

Be careful of the batteries for older machines on Amazon. I ordered one (as new) last year and when it arrived it had a manufactured date of 2012! After I plugged it in and charged it the battery actually lasted just over 20 minutes! Lucky for me Amazon took it bad and that vendor isn't there anymore!

Why not order an M.2 nVME Gen 3 and a SSD converter for the laptop? OWC is very expensive.

The cheapest one I found was a 169$, I believe 2012 MacBook Air
Is there a reason why so many people leave the dock always on. And not only that but at the default size which is huge. It eats up so much screen space.
It’s a trade off, for people that like seeing it. But I have an 11 inch too I use and I put the dock on the left side so it doesn’t affect vertical space.
You need also 8gb ram or 16…4gb for Mac is not enough.

Not really. An older OS and power for light tasks.

@@zach-18082 I'm going to chuck up to personal quirks of using technology to write comments online, although I'm open to a possibility that a person's background culture and their unique experience in writing, typing and using the Internet lingo might be the reason why the person you're pointing to, is using commas instead of a period (".") to end their sentence.
@@FiredAndIcedI assumed that the commas were from a keyboard that is from a different country, and TH-cam just interpreted the commas and periods as multiple commas. Especially because there are 2 commas where commas should be and three where a period should be.
