    I see "Daechwita" as another example of Yoongi wrestling with his shadow -- knowing he has anger and greed inside himself, possibly still feeling hatred toward his haters (well, *I'd* hate them, but maybe Yoongi has thicker skin than me). So he uses the "mad emperor" character to get those feelings out in the open and then uses the "street kid" character to represent his ego (the person he wants to be and tries to be) fighting back against the mad emperor. But Yoongi seems to understand Jungian psychology and his own shadow very well. He knows he'll never get rid of it. Right after he released the mixtape with "Daechwita" on it, he pointed out in a vlog that you never actually see the mad emperor get shot; all you see is the street kid firing the gun. It was important for Yoongi to let *us* know that we all have shadows we can't kill.

    This is in fact a very good explanation.
    I’d like to add that the song and MV also has Ego, not just Shadow and Persona. It’s not just my opinion, but Dr. Stein, the author of the book Map of the Soul, said in his interview about this song and MV that when he says I want to be a rapstar, etc, any time he says I want, that’s the Ego speaking since the Ego is the “I”, however one could say it’s and Ego full of Shadow and that he’s confessing those shadows through the song.

    "Essentially this song is telling its listeners to accept and embrace their shadows. Despite what the persona tells you to do." "Yoongi has taken another step futher. He is not only Suga of BTS but someone with the traits of his shadows as well." From the comments I saw after Shadow dropped so many people seemed to miss this point. We don't necessarily like it but to grow as a human and to truly find and know ourselves we have to acknowledge the sides of us we try to keep locked up or try to run away from. Like it or not those still are part of us. Even though Shadow might make you feel sad towards Yoongi/BTS this is he telling us he is trying to go forward in the process of finding him, finding how to be him and acknowledging his shadows, accepting the fact that they are with him no matter how he tries to run from them.

    I’m always impressed by bts’ songs & their music-making/song-writing abilities.
    Yoongi, especially delivered in this interlude.
    It’s so artistically inspiring how he is able to condense his storytelling, and in a way that also incorporates:
    1. exposition (introducing the underlying conflict between his 2 personas: min yoongi & suga),
    2. rising action (explaining his achievement as Min Yoongi),
    3. climax (analysing there are downfalls that comes with accomplishing his dreams),
    4. falling action (realising with all his bright light of success, follows his shadow: Suga),
    5. resolution (coming to conclusion that he is Min Yoongi, and Suga
    All alongside the elements that further emphasise his message.

      @campusvixen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There are also back stories to the visuals & art incorporated into the MV; one of them that particularly caught my attention (theorised btw):
      - The patch-like ‘YD250’ on yoongi’s shoulder (when he was wearing the brown jacket in the mv) can symbolise that one turning point of his life when he got into an accident with a motorcycle of that model number ‘YD250’ (which is something that plays quite a part in yoongi’s lyricism & memory to artistry).

    LOL. When I saw the title "Best explanation on TH-cam" I immediately thought "Presumptuous much? I'll be the judge of that. I bet it's Danny". I don't know if it is the best on TH-cam but it's the best I've watched so far. So great Job, Danny!
    What I found the most amazing about this interlude was how well the 'Shadow' concept fits Suga. Same way 'Persona' fit RM, actually. After all, 'identity' has been a recurring subject in RM's lyrics since the beginning and he's even stated that he worries about how much of himself he's invested in the RM persona. In Suga's case, I feel like he's been documenting the conflict with his inner demons in his lyrics since Agust D. In his mixtape, he often talks about greed; he acknowledges his ambitious side but tries to ground himself, remind himself of his fans and his team. Like he's trying to temper the worst of his thoughts and impulses with the more humble mindset and behaviour that's expected of him. I don't know, it's just my opinion. I just think that, as a person who's dealt with depression and anxiety so much, he's the most aware that the shadowy parts of yourself don't ever leave you, regardless of what you achieve.

    I like your interpretation and i agree about pretty much everything you said. I have to say the personification of the shadow is pretty stunning. First as moving, twitching and nearly shape-shifting black figures chasing him when he reaches for his dreams with all his might, then completely motionless and emotionless people/robots (society/media) holding phones and coldy recording him while he struggles on stage singing contradictory aspirations and finally himself speaking as the shadow and snaking in and out among the black figures but also aggressively telling himself some home truths about accepting the dark sides… stunning.
    One thing i haven’t seen much discussed is Suga’s very compelling work on his own personal shadow and especially his greed, his ambition. Suga has tackled his struggles with greed before in various of his song like « give it to me », « the last » and obviously « Tony Montana ». Those have been recurring themes in his lyrics and his acknowledgment of them but also his treatment of them is so interesting.
    I think it is key that Suga actually pretty much attributes his success and hence in a way his persona as Suga, as an idol (and we have to remember the 1st original use of an idol is to be worshipped) to his greed and ambition aka to his shadow. Here it is very clear with the loop of « I wanna be a rapstar, i wanna be rich… » rehashed throughout the song. He also attributes his success to another shadow : his resentment towards society (« take a good look at me, resentment made me » in The Last). It is because he wanted it so much and also because he hated everything so much that he succeeded. So his shadows are his drive and even his salvation in the way that they created his success.
    And obviously ambition is also a quality… up to a point, since your best qualities always become your worst faults when pushed too far. He has expressed several times he is scared of the kind of person success could turn him into and he has also expressed how despite fulfilling and even going beyond his aspirations, those traits of his are not satisfied. ("I know, feel like ha Tony Montana /Success and happiness look alike but they’re different/ But I want a bigger success /More wealth and bigger honor/ I want the money to chase me but I hope I don’t become the monster chasing only money » Tony Montana).
    In Interlude: Shadow it’s really interesting how when the song shifts and he begins to rap as his shadow, the « i wanna be a rap star, i wanna be rich… » now repeats extra aggressively like in a horror distorted version. A bit like if that greedy monster was not only not satisfied after all that success but even growing with Suga’s success. This is what happens in « Scarface » the film he references in Tony Montana. So greed is his drive but will also be his downfall, if not actually rained in. (« My monster named success that I traded my youth for, he wants a bigger wealth. The greed that was my weapon, it devours me and sometimes it collars me » The Last). It’s seems that knowing and acknowledging your shadows and taming them/using them is the key to success instead of repressing them. This also recuts the Love Yourself arc of the previous album and what RM said about having to be « Friends with the shadow ».
    Still 7 seems to me more a continuation of the themes in Wings than Love Yourself. Wings reads like an initiatory and coming-of-age journey (just like the book of Demian) and actually tackles the same idea of « individuation » than the Map of the Soul : how someone becomes an individual with his own beliefs and values. For that one has to break out from the perfect world of childhood and innocence and be confronted with fear, lust, doubts, self hate, forbidden fruits and EVIL. This is masterfully expressed in their individuals songs and also in Blood sweat and tears. Just like the quote from Nietzsche "One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star. » that appears at the end of BST, BTS is saying that the whirlpool of growing up and facing ones shadows and complexity is what makes an individual. That metaphor of people being whole universes is later used in Microcosmos.
    However once again greed was a central part of "Blood Sweat and Tears » where the lyrics portray the complete surrender to lust against all reason. ("Want it more moremoremore /Want it more moremoremoremoremore /Kill me gently /Close my eyes with your hands /Can’t resist it anyway /Can’t even run away anymore /You just too sweet too sweet too sweet… »). But if the falling for temptation could and should be understood in its very sexual meaning, it can also, just like in Interlude: Shadow, be about wanting fame and success and being able to sacrifice everything for it. In the MV they, after all, literally portrayed the act of selling your soul to the devil.
    Anyways, all in all i really love what they are doing and i wonder if this could initiate a kind of dive into individual shadow in this album like a 7 deadly sins kind of things (i love the theme of greed so much because i relate so much to it), which could be possible with the City Dionysia and greek gods theme they seem to have hinted before.

    this just goes to show that we will never truly understand anyone else truly. heck we can't even under stand ourselves, but the fact that thousands of armies could never spot that bts might be going through a rough time. SO MANY fans yet not one could detect that bts were struggling at the beginning of 2018.
    i still remember that night at that MAMA award they said that they ere on the verge of disbandment but at the start of the year no one would have guessed it. armies the biggest fandom rn couldn't have even guessed it. and thats fricking scary

    • @wellwell7429
      @wellwell7429 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I disagree. We can understand. It's just that there are times when we don't know something. BTS were hiding their struggles from us, so we didn't know. Now we know and we are able to understand.

    • @wellwell7429
      @wellwell7429 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      And it's actually good that there's a possibility to hide some things from other people. BTS were able to resolve their issues on their own without all that public noise and continued successfully. What good it would do if the fandom suspected something? Just panic and all that commotion, it would be no good for anybody. Don't you want to be able to not tell something so that people didn't bother you about it until you are ready? These things are normal and necessary for us.

    • @KC-xt9tc
      @KC-xt9tc 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've got strength I guess you are trying to say if BTS is open to tell us something we can understand them, but in fact we will never get a chance to know what are truly deep inside their heart, I believe most of us have watched a lot of contents of them and you may think that we know them a lot, but even among themselves they might not know what they truly want or think, that’s how this map of the soul concept come up with

    This is probably the correct explanation in terms of the theme, but when I heard this song I associated Suga’s shadow, not with his true self which he has been repressing, but instead with negative traits and experiences which have come as a consequence of being famous.
    For example, since becoming famous Yoongi has had to deal with negative emotions such as depression, loneliness, and something he has referenced in multiple songs: greed. He’s also lost privacy and has the added pressure of living a volatile life “at the top”.
    I thought this line was quite telling:
    “People say, there’s splendour in that bright light, but my growing shadow swallows me and becomes a monster.” As much as Yoongi enjoys what he is doing, there are consequences that come from the life he is living, and at times they can be all-consuming.
    It reminded me of the line from Magic Shop: “My greed that used to be a weapon became a shackle and a leash.” Or in other words, sometimes chasing after your dream can actually lead to being enslaved to your dream.
    But at the end of the song, Yoongi faces the realisation that these negatives are now part of his life and he needs to come to terms with this reality. This acceptance means he can now find ways to deal with the negatives and try to maintain an equilibrium, a sense of joy and self in the whirlwind that is his life.

    This was an INCREDIBLE breakdown, wow! It reminded me of the little bit my psychology 101 course went over Jungian psychology in college. It’s been a hooooooot minute so I’d forgotten quite a bit, (I went on to get a degree in English with a focus on writing and a minor in Broadcasting, so I used Psychology to fulfill science requirement, but greatly enjoyed it), but this was absolutely brilliant. I love all of your break downs from the cultural and historical aspects, to even elements like this. Thank you so much!!
    I’d love it if you’d consider delving into People, People or 2, Honsool, The Last, and Jimin’s Set Me Free. I think your cultural and language insights, as well as your insights into them as people - especially as people coming from your own unique cultural background - really adds a lot. I’m in an interracial and international marriage and I can tell you that a lot of the times the way my husband and I view even what can seem to be the smallest things is so damn vastly different than I sometimes wonder if we are communicating as two races from different sides of the effing GALAXY at some points. Like what, how did you even come to that conclusion…?!?! What?!?! No, let’s start this whole damn mess of a conversation over from point A and try reaching point C, instead of you at 3.251 Alpha coordinates, and I’m over here on Pluto waving a blue flag and a flashlight trying to find you, damn. 😂
    It really does hit different when coming from someone who understands at a level that the members themselves understand. Also I love that you address mental health in Asia so openly. MAD PROPS TO YOU!!! I’ve lived over half my life here and when I say it’s not discussed enough that is only the tip of the iceberg, so thank you. Internet hugs coming your way. ❤

    As a musician, I don't like the "dark side of glory" theory. For me, Suga represents the greatest fear of any artist - the fear of failure, the fall. Each artist has his or her own creative peak, after which he / she fears whether he / she will be able to surpass it with his / her next creation or will fail. The artist is afraid if he will satisfy the high demands of the society, the fans ... But these are in fact his own high demands, his self-criticism ... That is why the shadow of Suga lies between the audience, the observers ...

    Thoroughly enjoyed this explanation. I think it takes alot to share what is going on behind the smiles we see and to bring it in a way that scrambles the brain sometimes (lol). They share but they also make us see where we can relate. Sometimes it's not our failures we're afraid of, sometimes it's the success and what it will ask of us. I love this song and the explanation was top notch. Thank you.

    Another part of the individuation process I’d like to add is the Ego’s role in all of this. In relation to the Persona, the Ego tells us stories of who we think we are and that’s how, as mentioned by Danny, we confuse the social masks we wear as being the Self. In relation to the Shadow, the Ego tells us stories of who we think we are not, which further represses traits you rejected. What I love about the individuation process is the “shadow work” we need to do to acknowledge and incorporate those repressed traits to become your whole “Self”.
    To truly be you, you have to accept all parts of you. Even the ugly parts must be accepted because it is still a part of you no matter how much your reject those ugly parts.
    Sorry not sorry but I couldn’t help myself 😅 I love the Jungian perspective 😍 I fucking dedicated so many college essays about his work 🙌

    Interestingly, after watching shadow for the first times and thinking about the lyrics, I got really angry. I felt huge annoyance towards Suga for talking the way he does in the song and it brought all those dark and cynic sides of me to the surface. After I realized what I’m doing I got angry at myself for thinking that way. In a sense, ‘Shadow’ made me experience my ‘shadow’ that is usually buried deep in my subconscious. It made me aware of its existence and after a talk with a friend I was able to think rational again.
    Knowing your ‘shadow’ can make you work on it. I started thinking about why I have those thoughts and what I can do to make me feel better. Make me feel more comfortable with myself. Looking back at it now, as silly as it sounds, watching shadow brought me one step closer towards self-awareness and self-acceptance. It was the little trigger I needed at that time to get here.
