गढ़वाल का वैदिक नाम हेमवंत परदेश था जिसमें bhaut सारे गढ़ हुआ करते थे जो आपस मैं लड़ते रहते थे 833 ईसवी मैं धार के राजकुमार कनकपाल बरद्रीनाथ यात्रा आया था जिसको चांदपुर गढ़ के महाराजा भानु प्रताप ने अपना दामाद बनाया और अपना राज कनकपाल को सौंप कर जंगल चले गए उसके साथ ही पंवार वंस की शुरुआत हुई गढ़वाल में जो आजतक उनकी वंसावली चल रही है जय बद्री विशाल जय देवभूमि उत्तराखंड

3.और गढ़वाल नाम तब पड़ा जब अजयपाल ने 52 गढ़ों को जीता तभी उसका नाम गढ़वाला पड़ा और यहां के लोगों को गढ़वाली कहा गया।
4. यहां के आखिरी राजा मानवेंद्र शाह हुए जिन्होंने सिर्फ दो साल राज किया और फिर 1949 मैं टेहरी राज्य का विलय भारत मैं हुआ
