  • @andreas.grundler

    I'm surprised that LTT does so much product development in-house. I had thought that they were working with external companies that specialize in prototyping.

    • @tynanstack8251
      @tynanstack8251 หลายเดือนก่อน +76

      Generally speaking iterating using in house 3D printing is wwaayy faster than working with an external prototyping house, since we can iterate like 20+ times/day depending on the size of the part with printers whereas at an external house it would be days to weeks per cycle. It also helps us understand manufacturing processes and improves our design processes! Plus lets us do fun one off projects with the tools!

    • @ninjadudeofficial
      @ninjadudeofficial หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      They do a lot of stuff in-house in general tbh, as Linus and some of the others have talked about a few times. That's why they can have such a large number of staff, but inidividual projects and tasks can still seem slow or flawed in some ways, bc there's only a small number involved. It can lead to inefficiencies in some places but allows them some pretty significant freedom and other benefits elsewhere. Like Tynan pointed out, so many of their resources are pulled frequently in various directions for labs testing, videos, products, and sometimes Linus's personal use lmao

    • @enderduck4253
      @enderduck4253 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Afaik, they do most if not all of their design and development in-house and then work with third parties for manufacturing

    • @the_undead
      @the_undead หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Generally speaking, product iteration and development is faster on 3D printers and lmg has an advantage in that a lot of their staff are very familiar with 3D printers so that they are capable of reviewing them and giving good reviews rather than meaningless ones. And when you have a significant percentage of your company That understands 3D printers at a far more in-depth level than even the average manufacturing company, they become quite useful

      I suspect because they are a media company they get nice discounts on a lot of the stuff they purchase if it doesn't get sent to them (probably not on the 20th Prusa Mark 4 but maybe the first five) Which would be part of the reason they were able to afford all this equipment, 25% discounts aren't usually a dramatic impact on whether you can purchase something, but when you're talking about individual machines that can cost into hundreds of thousands of rollers, a 25% discount makes a huge impact

    • @RobertJBareIII
      @RobertJBareIII 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@the_undeadLinus has talked about this on the wan show a bit, and unless they can work out some sort of agreement for a sponsored video or something, it doesn’t work like that. Because really the value proposition isn’t there. A lot of these larger machines are going to be B2B transactions and so a 25% discount or any discount to LMG doesn’t really move the needle or make a lot of sense for those in the long run

    • @the_undead
      @the_undead 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@RobertJBareIII I promise you with a lot of the sponsored videos they've done on a lot of their machines are not paying for the entire machine, Linus is still spending a lot of money on any equipment they acquire even if it's in a sponsored video, I suspect sponsored videos cover 25 to 50% of the cost because these companies will be fools to give Linus entire machines for free

    Those giant drivers are hilarious when realise they sound almost the same for the ratchet and bit storage.
    Would have loved to have seen their metal printer included in video, but I think that's still sort of under an embargo.

    • @the_undead
      @the_undead หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Because metal printers are at least outside of universities practically brand new technology, I suspect they have to get permission every time they want to include it in a video Beyond saying we used a metal 3D printer

    • @benwu7980
      @benwu7980 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@the_undead Yeah, previous LTT videos had half of it blurred out. I think they still have that printer, but Linus wasn't around on the day so I guess Tynan played it safe.
      Would guess that CC did ask about it.

    • @the_undead
      @the_undead หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@benwu7980 That is another fact or I didn't even think about, Titan is not senior enough to make decisions that could potentially get the entire company in a whole lot of trouble. Linus is the majority shareholder so he'll take relatively large risks because he wants to and you can't really get rid of Linus from lmg from a corporate structure perspective because as far as I can tell they don't have procedures for ousting shareholders

    • @benwu7980
      @benwu7980 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@the_undead Don't think Linus would be taking risks when showing it, since he'd know what the deal is with the maker, and he'd have script and video review. Tynan knew enough to know it shouldn't be included in the tour (at least on camera, I still bet that CC asked about it).
      The shareholder thing is kind of a funny dynamic, since he owns 51% and Yvonne the other 49%, so the CEO could fire him or her, but would likely be his last action as CEO.
      There's some possible scenarios where it could happen that I've seen in other companies, like malfeasance, but would say that it so unlikely as to be zero chance.
