in the old yugioh cards the fusion materials are usually connected with the story of the fusion monster rather than actually being the material of the fusion. for example time wizard doesnt actaully fuse with baby dragon in the lore he just fast forwards time to make him old.
That applies to St. Joan as well. Thematically, The Forgiving Maiden forgives Darklord Marie for all of her sins and she becomes a saint (not that it makes much sense for a card based on Joan of Arc, but at least her materials are appropriate).

Rare fish is actually useful. Its a level 4 water monster that can be summoned by instant fusion. With another level 4 water monster it turns into bahamut shark and then toadally awesome.
when I started playing Duel Links I was so confused when a random opportunity to fuse medusa and the zombie dragon appeared and the result wasn't a Stone Dragon or a draconic witch , instead was this leftover from Lion King in my side deck
I was waiting on Musician King. That one stumped me for years. And then years later, Vergil, Rock Star of the Burning Abyss overshadows the theme. Metal Raiders had some crazy fusion monsters. One of them being Roaring Ocean Snake. Its fused from Mystic Lamp and Hyosube... A lamp fused with a kappa makes a giant sea serpent. With Kamionwizard, its hands closely resembles Curtain of the Dark Ones. So that monster is likely the base of the fusion and Mystical Elf's powers went into strengthening it to its Kamionwizard form.

Okay on the mystical elf thing, I'd imagine the curtain somehow corrupted the elf turning her into that. The gender can easily be the same, the armour is rather gender neutral and her hair colour could have changed. Besides, her hair is a shade of blond

I agree with you on these being some of the weirdest fusions. However, there is one that blows them all out of the water: This monster is called "Yasushi The Skull Knight". This monster's fusion materials are the reason why it's so weird. These materials consist of "Witch of the Black Forest," and "Ultimate Offering," which is a Continuous Trap Card that gives you unlimited Normal Summons for the cost of 500 Life Points each.
The strangest things about the Skull Knight is that, first, its fusion material attacks don’t even equal the attack of the monster and, second, the Skull Knight is neither a Zombie, Warrior or Fiend type monster. It’s a Spellcaster.
For many of the inital monsters, they used exiisting designs from the manga -- or other monsters -- and haphazardly assigned materials for them. You can see that with Great Mammoth of Goldfine and Barox (who is a normal monster in the manga and anime). Sometimes it kind of made sense (Flame swordsman)... other times you'd have a Great Mammoth from the non-existent land of Lloyd Goldfine.
I'm honestly a bit surprised that Charubin the Fire Knight didn't make the list. Not only does one of the monsters you need (namely Monster Egg) not really make any sense, but it's a warrior type monster at that; kind of like how Hungry Burger was randomly made a "warrior" as well.
The weirdest one I can think of was Sanwitch: You combine Witch of the Black forest (A witchy woman) with Sangan (A three eyed fluffball) and somehow get Jakken from Inu Yasha... at least if you fuse them while they are on the field you would get their effects, but still...
When I started playing Yu-Gi Oh! as a kid, fusion monsters seemed so cool and fascinating, yet it took me little time to realize they were not only garbage, but also the fusions made no sense most of the time. On top of that, Polymerization was almost impossible to get before the Joey deck came out. As a kid, I had never seen anyone other than me that had Polymerization, not even as a bootleg card.
Is interesting how the game has evolved since the early years, I guess that one of these days you could make a top 10 weirdest old school OCG monsters, there are some weird monsters that never came to the TCG for some good reasons

PErsonally I think the "Skull Knight" fusion is more akin to this Tainted Wisdom WAS the original knight's brain, and Ancient used some old magic to revive it and become the Skull Knight. Or they are two parts of the Skull Knights one body.
10:32 actually that fusion makes sense a bit since Raijuu are beast that is being attacked by Raijin who is the Thunder God. These Raijuu usually has the ability to reside on the navel of humans and is usually the Raijin targets for a lightning strike. Meaning it has to be small and can conduct electricity. However I do wonder why the creators depicted the Fusion Monster as a scene of A Thunder god hitting the Raijuu rather than depicting the beast itself? Wait...I think the English name of the card makes sense now..
For Kamionwizard, I can see the Curtain of the Dark Ones in its already pathetic form attack and merge with the body of Mystical Elf, dawning on a new set of armor with a scythe to actually have itself instill fear unto others.
In the first season of the anime, Yami etc. gave a 30% bonus to ATK and DEF. Paniks Monsters had stats, that when increased by 30%, roughly equal rather strong monsters. (E.g. 930*1,3= 1209 ~ 1200, 1380*1,3= 1794 ~ 1800. 1530*1,3~2000 etc.)
Maybe the reasoning behind those weird early Fusion Monsters was that they were supposed to be like more recent ones, like Great Mammoth actually just requiring 2 DARK monsters, but when the cards were printed in real life, they put the cards used in the anime as the Fusion requirements? That could actually make sense, given how loose the requirements on a lot of the latest Fusion Monsters are...
Musician King does makes sense due to its fusion material. WOTBF (which is a DARK attribute) and the Lady of FAITH. hence, the band, Black Sabbath. Thus, the card, Musician King
all what mattered for old fusion cards is the type of the fused monsters: * Fusionist: Beast + Angel = Angel Beast * Kaminkari Attack: Angel + Thunder = Thunder God *Mystical Sand = Rock + Spellcaster = Rock Witch fusion in most early yugioh video games (Duelists of the Roses, Forbidden Memories etc) was like this.
Mystical sand had a special place in my heart because in early part of Forbidden Memories game it was easy to fuse and also super powerful. So many early duels won thanks to that card

Zombyra is based on a comic book in the manga that was basically off-brand "Spawn", so maybe Last Warrior from Another Planet's fusion materials have some sort of larger reference to Image Comics characters in them? Last Warrior certainly looks like Rob Liefeld drew him.

@@finnishnin I'd even argue Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon wasn't even that great back then, it was INCREDIBLY rare to get the cards to fuse, a - 3 to card advantage, and for a normal monster that can get destroyed pretty easily with a spell or trap, like any Mirror Force card or something. Maybe if you used Cyber-Stein to summon him it wouldn't be too bad, but I'm not sure if he existed back in that time
Kaminari attack was actually used a lot not that long ago tho, it was a good instant fusion target to summon the new thunder dragon cards, but yeah... these cards are pretty useless
It hadn't really occurred to me before, but I noticed a mark of laziness when you spoke of the Mammoth of Goldfine. Its ATK and DEF are identical to Mammoth Graveyard's, just with a 1000 boost to each.
what if you did top ten a characters monsters? Top Ten Yugi Monsters Top Ten kaiba Monsters Top Ten Joey Monsters Top Ten Bandit Keith Monsters Etc etc not spells and traps because they are not always unique
ironically fusionist is the only good card on this list presently being a good instant fusion target in madolche and other decks that like earth level 3 monsters
Rare fish is actuakly the best replacement for Elder Entity Norden in Mermail Atlantean/ Toad Heroes since people were running it before Norden got banned.
Kamionwizard and Fusionist were also both played in Infernity in 2014, which won worlds. Fusionist is the "best" lvl 3 as you can use it for direwolf and kamionwizard is lvl 4, dark (relevant for keybeetle) and has less than 1500 atk (which made it slightly better than darkfire dragon because bottomless).
they're all good for many reasons though... just as you use a lvl 3 for your Madolches other decks may use other levels for other ranks meaning other good cards...
.... also lvl4 Dark is good for Evilswarm Nightmare though - with the potential of making you CRY if you use Pendulums, Inferno Reckless Summon and Soul Charge XD -

For kaminari attack, I always took it that Ocubeam would pick Mega Thunderball and drop him down like a Continues thunder attack and sense kuriboh can attack a player directly and not be sent to the graveyard it could be that this monster is just Ocubeam dropping Mega Thunderball again and again.
To be fair, back in the day, Square only had so much space to work with, so palette-swapping might have been a way to cut down on how much space they used on monsters...
One thing I can point out. With fusion monsters, it doesn't necessarily mean the two monsters mush together in a blob to form a new monster. It is possible that the monsters combine their powers or use their power in tandem to either transform one or the other or create a brand new monster. If you look at Baby Dragon and Time Wizard, Time Wizard would clearly use his influence over time to accelerate Baby Dragon's aging to power up Baby Dragon into maturity.
Theory on all Fusion monsters based on this video Fusionist: Petite Angel grew tired of being weak so it was hypnotized by Mystical Sheep #2 thus the Polymerization portal was open for both monsters and Fusionist was Born Barox: Frienzied Panda and Ryukishin got into a huge fight as both monsters being ones to not give up and then the Polymerization Portal was opened fusing them together to become Barox Kamion Wizard: Curtain of The Dark Ones trapped Mystical Elf with its dark powers seeing that Mystical Elf is not much of the fighting type so a Polymerization Portal was triggered for them and Kamion Wizard was born Marine Beast: Water Magician was practicing her magic when Behegon saw her in the Water Realm and ate her thus triggering the Polymerization portal for the two creating Marine Beast Mystical Sand : Ancient Elf was defeated by an unknown warrior and then Giant Soldier of Stone had protected Ancient Elf from a huge attack thus creating a Polymerization portal fusing both monsters and Mystical Sand was born Skull Knight: Ancient Brain had wanted more dark knowledge for himself so he went to Magical Scientist for more information but instead Ancient Brain was tied down to an experimental chair and his original brain had been removed and was replaced by Tainted Wisdom thus triggering the Polymerization Portal for the two and Skull Knight was born Musician King: Lady of Faith was in the Forest Realm when she was confronted by Witch of the Black Forest demanding her gift and when Lady of Faith refused a Polymerization portal was created for both of them resulting in Musician King being born. Last Warrior From Another Planet: Zombrya the Dark was transferred by Interdimensional Transporter thus confronting Maryokutai for his power thus creating a Polymerization Portal however this portal transfer them into an empty planet in space and the Last Warrior from Another Planet was born Kaminari Attack: Ocubeam wanted to have the ability to control Thunder so it sees Mega Thunderball and wanted to absorb its energy and the Polymerization Portal was created and Kaminari Attack came out through lightning. Great Mammoth of Goldfine: Snake Hair was confronted by Dragon Zombie and she used her stare to turn Dragon Zombie to stone and then the stone statue fell upon Snake Hair and the Polymerization Portal was created and the Mammoth of Goldfine was born

I always wanted to play with a deck that focuses on shitty LOB fusions. ...but I never had any of them besides fusionist. ...and I always thought that Flame Ghost, Darkfire Dragon and Charubin looked so much cooler. Woah, Rare Fish is one beast. A double fusion for fabulous 1500 ATK. Someone should build a deck around that.
I thought I should mention Mystical Sand actually does have a name that makes sense. In the spinoff miniseries Yu-Gi-Oh Capsule Monsters she's a minor antagonist for one episode. She's shown to be a desert witch with powers over sand, so this actually fits to an extent. Though her name really should have been Sand Witch in that case.
I forgot about Capsule Monsters! I watched that all the way through about 10 years ago. I forgot Mystical Sand was in there, but at least her anime powers makes up for her artwork not explaining her powers.
Musician King's Fusion result works like this. Witch of the Black Forest turns Lady of Faith into the opposite of her character. I.e. female into male, peaceful chants into loud heavy music, hair color becomes opposite, etc. Some interesting trivia, Lady of Faith's MRD set # is 119, and Witch of the Black Forest's is 116. 119 - 116 = 103, which is Musician King's :D
If they did actually create the Heavy Metal King they'd have to either give him an actually decent effect unlike Red Eyes Black Metal Dragon. Or they'd have to give him an archetype. That's actually be pretty neat. A modern music themed archetype.

And yet strangely enough, there's another Fusion Monster by the name of Sanwitch, which was a fusion between Sangan and Witch of the Black Forest.
I guess since Sanwitch already existed they didn't want to make it confusing.
I ran a lot of these pointless fusions in a Fusion Gate/Gren Maju da Eiza deck. T’was one of the best decisions I ever made.

Is interesting how the game has evolved since the early years, I guess that one of these days you could make a top 10 weirdest old school OCG monsters, there are some weird monsters that never came to the TCG for some good reasons
I hope to cover more weird, old Yugioh card designs in the future, like I do with the Pokémon Sprite "analysis" videos, so maybe the OCG or other early TCG monsters will be the next Yugioh topic

PErsonally I think the "Skull Knight" fusion is more akin to this Tainted Wisdom WAS the original knight's brain, and Ancient used some old magic to revive it and become the Skull Knight. Or they are two parts of the Skull Knights one body.
10:32 actually that fusion makes sense a bit since Raijuu are beast that is being attacked by Raijin who is the Thunder God. These Raijuu usually has the ability to reside on the navel of humans and is usually the Raijin targets for a lightning strike. Meaning it has to be small and can conduct electricity. However I do wonder why the creators depicted the Fusion Monster as a scene of A Thunder god hitting the Raijuu rather than depicting the beast itself?

For Kamionwizard, I can see the Curtain of the Dark Ones in its already pathetic form attack and merge with the body of Mystical Elf, dawning on a new set of armor with a scythe to actually have itself instill fear unto others.
In the first season of the anime, Yami etc. gave a 30% bonus to ATK and DEF. Paniks Monsters had stats, that when increased by 30%, roughly equal rather strong monsters. (E.g. 930*1,3= 1209 ~ 1200, 1380*1,3= 1794 ~ 1800. 1530*1,3~2000 etc.)
Maybe the reasoning behind those weird early Fusion Monsters was that they were supposed to be like more recent ones, like Great Mammoth actually just requiring 2 DARK monsters, but when the cards were printed in real life, they put the cards used in the anime as the Fusion requirements? That could actually make sense, given how loose the requirements on a lot of the latest Fusion Monsters are...
The only really generic Fusions are Starving Venom and Triphyoverutum and Almarduke.

all what mattered for old fusion cards is the type of the fused monsters:
* Fusionist: Beast + Angel = Angel Beast
* Kaminkari Attack: Angel + Thunder = Thunder God
*Mystical Sand = Rock + Spellcaster = Rock Witch
fusion in most early yugioh video games (Duelists of the Roses, Forbidden Memories etc) was like this.
Mystical sand had a special place in my heart because in early part of Forbidden Memories game it was easy to fuse and also super powerful. So many early duels won thanks to that card

From a competitive standpoint, Rare Beast is actually really good, seeing as you just use instant fusion and plop it on the field.
Zombyra is based on a comic book in the manga that was basically off-brand "Spawn", so maybe Last Warrior from Another Planet's fusion materials have some sort of larger reference to Image Comics characters in them? Last Warrior certainly looks like Rob Liefeld drew him.

Fusion monsters in 1gen Yu-Gi-Oh was all underpowered and just not worth to summon.
The only one worth it was Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon, and even then it was cause of Future Fusion from GX
@@finnishnin I'd even argue Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon wasn't even that great back then, it was INCREDIBLY rare to get the cards to fuse, a - 3 to card advantage, and for a normal monster that can get destroyed pretty easily with a spell or trap, like any Mirror Force card or something. Maybe if you used Cyber-Stein to summon him it wouldn't be too bad, but I'm not sure if he existed back in that time

Kaminari attack was actually used a lot not that long ago tho, it was a good instant fusion target to summon the new thunder dragon cards, but yeah... these cards are pretty useless

It hadn't really occurred to me before, but I noticed a mark of laziness when you spoke of the Mammoth of Goldfine. Its ATK and DEF are identical to Mammoth Graveyard's, just with a 1000 boost to each.
They just recolored the artwork for Mammoth Graveyard and pretended it was a new monster, with fusion materials haphazardly assigned to it.

Rare fish is actuakly the best replacement for Elder Entity Norden in Mermail Atlantean/ Toad Heroes since people were running it before Norden got banned.
Or for more casual purposes, it serves with other level 3 EARTH monsters to summon Melliae in the Plant Princess Deck.
Kamionwizard and Fusionist were also both played in Infernity in 2014, which won worlds. Fusionist is the "best" lvl 3 as you can use it for direwolf and kamionwizard is lvl 4, dark (relevant for keybeetle) and has less than 1500 atk (which made it slightly better than darkfire dragon because bottomless).
they're all good for many reasons though... just as you use a lvl 3 for your Madolches other decks may use other levels for other ranks meaning other good cards...
.... also lvl4 Dark is good for Evilswarm Nightmare though - with the potential of making you CRY if you use Pendulums, Inferno Reckless Summon and Soul Charge XD -

For kaminari attack, I always took it that Ocubeam would pick Mega Thunderball and drop him down like a Continues thunder attack and sense kuriboh can attack a player directly and not be sent to the graveyard it could be that this monster is just Ocubeam dropping Mega Thunderball again and again.

To be fair, back in the day, Square only had so much space to work with, so palette-swapping might have been a way to cut down on how much space they used on monsters...
Also I actually loved that, I enjoyed pallette swapping monsters, it was always sort of a throwback to early parts of the game
One thing I can point out. With fusion monsters, it doesn't necessarily mean the two monsters mush together in a blob to form a new monster. It is possible that the monsters combine their powers or use their power in tandem to either transform one or the other or create a brand new monster. If you look at Baby Dragon and Time Wizard, Time Wizard would clearly use his influence over time to accelerate Baby Dragon's aging to power up Baby Dragon into maturity.

Marine Beast: Water Magician was practicing her magic when Behegon saw her in the Water Realm and ate her thus triggering the Polymerization portal for the two creating Marine Beast
Mystical Sand : Ancient Elf was defeated by an unknown warrior and then Giant Soldier of Stone had protected Ancient Elf from a huge attack thus creating a Polymerization portal fusing both monsters and Mystical Sand was born
Skull Knight: Ancient Brain had wanted more dark knowledge for himself so he went to Magical Scientist for more information but instead Ancient Brain was tied down to an experimental chair and his original brain had been removed and was replaced by Tainted Wisdom thus triggering the Polymerization Portal for the two and Skull Knight was born
Musician King: Lady of Faith was in the Forest Realm when she was confronted by Witch of the Black Forest demanding her gift and when Lady of Faith refused a Polymerization portal was created for both of them resulting in Musician King being born.
Last Warrior From Another Planet:
Zombrya the Dark was transferred by Interdimensional Transporter thus confronting Maryokutai for his power thus creating a Polymerization Portal however this portal transfer them into an empty planet in space and the Last Warrior from Another Planet was born
Kaminari Attack: Ocubeam wanted to have the ability to control Thunder so it sees Mega Thunderball and wanted to absorb its energy and the Polymerization Portal was created and Kaminari Attack came out through lightning.

I thought I should mention Mystical Sand actually does have a name that makes sense. In the spinoff miniseries Yu-Gi-Oh Capsule Monsters she's a minor antagonist for one episode. She's shown to be a desert witch with powers over sand, so this actually fits to an extent. Though her name really should have been Sand Witch in that case.
I forgot about Capsule Monsters! I watched that all the way through about 10 years ago. I forgot Mystical Sand was in there, but at least her anime powers makes up for her artwork not explaining her powers.

Musician King's Fusion result works like this. Witch of the Black Forest turns Lady of Faith into the opposite of her character. I.e. female into male, peaceful chants into loud heavy music, hair color becomes opposite, etc. Some interesting trivia, Lady of Faith's MRD set # is 119, and Witch of the Black Forest's is 116.
119 - 116 = 103, which is Musician King's :D
