Thanks Andrew for a great review of one of your machines, also the reasoning for buying a quality built commercial machine to begin with and stop loosing money from the start. Stay safe and keep up the quality work and videos you share. Fred. 🙏🏻🙏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻✋🏻✋🏻

I went with a commercial machine for the speed and durability. I started splitting by hand, then I got a harbor freight splitter. It was a dual direction splitter. The cylinder ran inside of the beam. The cylinder had round stock welded to it for the friction points. After about 50 cords it had noticeable wear. It would have probably gone 200 cord before it gave a problem but I wanted something faster so that was when I upgraded. In reality though, that little harbor freight splitter would have lasted a homeowner a lifetime. Another downfall to it was wood chips and bark would build up in the beam and it would have to be cleaned which took a half an hour to do. It needed to be done every 6-8 cords.

Easton made is definitely the Duesenberg of the firewood industry. I reckon if you made a log table with a 30-inch hydraulic saw which drops the rounds onto a roller deck going to the splitter that would be the go , all powered from the splitter. You could cut a log , then split it all done by one person if desired or 2/3 people at full speed

I’d like to see a basic setup video for swapping between the box wedge and a regular 4 or 6 way. I would probably be interested in running both but I’m not sure how reasonable it is to swap out back and forth with potentially heavy components.

All completely valid good points for a commercial operation. Hard to justify it when it comes to non-commercial because the workflow is only as good as the weakest link and every other link is likely to be weak compared to a commercial grade splitter unless the person upgrades everything else so the additional handling mechanization costs are going to be significantly more. Look no further than The Morgans, who had to change the entire operation to fit around the commercial splitter. The other drawback (although the box wedge splitter may be an exception) is scrap and waste. That's the cost of doing business with 4 or more way wedges but if you're just one guy, that's an additional handling and cleanup and separation task that takes a fair bit of additional timel unless it all just gets lumped together, which is going to lower the perceived quality to any customer, as they will soon be asking themselves what's all this extra crap in with the firewood?! Solve those two problems for me and I'll take the plunge!

Great video, I am actively looking for a log splitter. We have a dr kinetic splitter now that is fine for our 5acre property and works surprisingly well BUT, the wife and I just picked up 100 acres in N Idaho we are going to retire on. I plan on heating my shop and home with wood. I figure 6-8 cords a year for us and another 6-8 cords for my father in law. I need a much more substantial splitter. If I ended up splitting say 20 cords a year which machine would you recommend? The 5-11 and the 9-16 seem like they would more then meet my need. I may even try to sell a little wood on the side. We will mostly be splitting Red Fir and Tamarack/Larch. Excuse my ignorance but what do the designation 5-11 and 9-16 represent?
