Can you really make this kind of money? What are some general places I can go to find good quantities of copper and such? I've got a few hundred pounds of aluminum and am thinking of taking this up after having been laid off. Thanks
Electrician myself, those type transformers are most commonly found in lighting modules. He's worked out a deal where he buys scrap from electrical shops at a blanket price and seperates everything in order to sell it at "clean copper" prices. This is common practice; the company gets a few bucks and it's almost 100% profit for them with almost no time invested. This guy is not putting out false information, at 6:54, and at 45:30, he says he bought it. He's a businessman who's found a profitable niche and is making money, I respect his work ethic. You go boy!
9:35 I'm crying! That appears to be more than 100 ft of such heavy-duty NEW material! Dad often saved scraps like that from jobsites and such. It might be a decade before he needed it, but he built most of our house and a few outbuildings with found materials. Excellent set up though.
Yah that one's a shame to strip for scrap. Definitely could have made more reselling, but suppose that takes time and is a pain in the butt in its own way. Not sure how many people are exactly looking for wire that gauge on Craigslist or ebay
I used to work for my uncle’s flat roofing company. I dismantled many AC units piece by piece. Scraped it all. Dump trucks full of aluminum and copper.
Best day I ever had was stripping some 1" #1 right off the spool. Ran it right through my blade machine. Probably $6-7k worth of bare bright when I took it in, cut it all up in less than half a day. Guys at the yard were sure jealous!

He didn't say HE was making a 1000 a day, but if you LOOK around in the video and see what he is doing along with the wire stripper/cutter (mind blown) along with the transformers etc you will SEE the potential to make a 1000 a day or better (depending on scrap prices as well)
A trick on stripping #1 wire is to just run it through a couple of steel rollers and let the force between the rollers cut the insulation by squeezing it against the copper inside. The really nice thing about it is that you can feed multiple runs in at one time. A LOT faster and less fiddling with the machine.
He’s doing it the right way you should see how many people scrap the wrong way. They don’t separate stuff or even worse I see guys bring truck loads of window ac’s and they don’t take them apart. I do hvac so I buy bullet valves and recover the Freon then take apart the entire unit I do it as a hobby to get stress out and make an extra few hundred here and there it’s a win win.
@@ProjectShopFl lol hobby ? Looks like you’re a pro and do it full time. I was wondering does Florida regulate scraping air conditioners? I hear some states do and you need an epa card or hvac certification. Up my way in Massachusetts most scrap yards are starting to not allow ac units that have Freon in it still or if the unit it not separated like motor compressor ext. I Went to school for hvac and I have my refrigeration license and I was shocked when I first asked and they said I didn’t need it to bring air conditioners. I used to work at a yard on Western in South Central LA, and I used to see guys like you all the time bringing in all sorts of various copper wiring and etc. Good times, good times. The industrial power cable is worth money 👀

@@h1c2e35 You're right, no one has ever moved before. I mean difficult things make people unable to achieve anything and no one has gone through difficult things and made a change in life. It's better to just settle back into hopelessness with an attitude filled with reasons that create a self fulfilling prophecy from ones pessimism. It's way easier to just give up and then try devaluing anyone's comments that point out one's potential.
You are very lucky to have shops give you the scrap. Every shop I’ve ever asked told me that they did their own scrapping and take a hike. The only way to get scrap ware I’m from is wait for people to throw it out and than you got to beat the other guys doing the same thing to it so those nice paydays are long in between times here. And I’ve never made a grand in a day or a week doing it.
Your the man, you work hard and deserve a good payday brother. The wire you stripped up to at least 17 min looks like a lot larger than AWG #2 gauge. Looks more like 0000 (4/0) or larger. Thanks for the video, you have some interesting machines. I know 1st hand how tedious stripping wire can be by hand with just a sharp razor knife in-hand, and pulling jacket off. We did this at my place of employment when our assembly work was slow. Your machine makes some of this stripping look so effortless. I used to wire up big “up to 125 hp” 3 phase motors and control boxes when building industrial screw type air compressors. Best of luck to you young man 😎👍

I’ve been breaking down junk for a while now, but the only problem is finding a steady supply of scrap metal and things such as transformers. If I could have access to a supply such as this I truly believe I would be set. Great video btw.
the millions will flow into the hands of the smartest guy and the guy who is least lazy. keep trying and best luck. ohh, btw, deflation is on the streets, you have a limited time for processing scrap , otherwise, prices on futures will fall making it not attractive. here at the country where I live 1 kg of aluminum profile costs 15 bucks, but scrap aluminum costs only .80 cents. Rockefeller would rise from the grave himself if he heard of such profitability.

I am very impressed with your setup. Your operation makes what I do laughable as I just save things through the year. I am lucky if I make one trip a year to the scrapyard, realistically its less than that.
Used to be a scrapper, I would use an air chisel to cut the copper out the transformers. As for the aluminum, cut the same. Had built my own wire stripper to strip large and small wire. Everything went into separate barrels to haul. Would make about $900 to $1200 a week.
That’s actually pretty good all things considered. What’s the operating costs of being a scrapper. Also what kinds of metal are you looking for? I mainly know aluminum and copper, but what about brass, tin, bronze, and iron.

Thanks for the suggestion and your concern. I do have all the guards for the wire stripper but they came off the first time it jammed and I had to remove them to fix the jam. I will be putting guards on it just not the ones that came with it. Or I’m gonna modify the ones that came with it I haven’t decided yet.

@@cranki6316 Man legit says he buys parts that contain transformers in batches, beats em up until they spit out said tasty transformers, or he buys transformers as is from tradesmen who stack em up and sell em on... to him. Man's willing to talk to people, put himself out there, do the time and sweat to reap the rewards.
Just stacked up a pyramid of transformers myself. 28 to be exact. Also just broke 14 the day prior. I use a similar process to press out the middle. Just using a hammer or an air chisel. I love that set up. Wish I had the connections for transformers like you do!!! Keep on stacking that recycled greeeenery!!!!!

Love seeing the large vented transformer skin used to separate your stripping table from your press area. We buy used electrical to resell and scrap all over the south East.
@@bonniestulll1816 First off you’re gonna need a source of material, either electricians like I have as customers or buy it directly from a local scrapyard. You’re also gonna need a good buyer someone that’s gonna pay a good premium price I sell to an exporter so I get the same price as the scrap yard gets. Then you’re gonna have to have a fast and efficient way to process the material that’s where the machines come in to play. Good luck and thanks for watching
@King J for steel/iron yes that's way I get in south Florida. But other metals Copper, Aluminum, Brass, Stainless steel will be a much higher price. You have to separate all the metals.

Great video, how about get yourself a lug crimping tool….buy some clamps and make sets of seriously heavy duty jumper leads for the earthmoving industry? Vary the length according to what the customer wants and keep the price competitive, I bet they would sell like hotcakes! The bane of my life running earthmoving machines over the years was finding jumper leads not only long enough but heavy enough to carry the voltage without frying or losing current due to length, machinery manufacturers put batteries in some of the hardest positions to access…sometimes it’s not possible to get close enough too a machine, I made a 6 meter long set out of welding cable that were ridiculously expensive but worked perfectly until a thieving dog stole them and all the tools of my service vehicle. Price a set and see if it’s worth it for you…… cheers from Australia 🍻

Allot of the TH-camrs will defend their short 10 or 15 minutes videos by saying people lose interest after that time If you have good content like your videos do, it is hard to lose interest even after an hour. I like your videos because they are both interesting and lengthy. Thanks for the great shows that are full of information.

A little design change for your stripper in feed is to make them like little funnels, so right the cutter wheel you have the right diameter for the wire your using, but a bit of a wider area to start it so it doesn't bunch up the insulation
Would have liked to see you braking up the trans formers it's nice to see how things are done I have used a knife and a vice to strip hard work, it's good you consider your neighbours
I did consider the neighbors that's why I was rushing to finish cracking the welds before they got home. I've made many videos on how the machine works.
Here is a question for you about ac radiators Aluminum melts at a much lower temperature than copper. Have you ever thought about some way to melt the aluminum off the copper. I'm asking because I thought you said you were going to start casting some stuff eventually. Do you think you could. Melt it off. You could have aluminum and copper ingots
Melting in the aluminum off the copper is an interesting idea. I thought of something like that for the transformers years ago but My press is way faster. Or copper aluminum radiators that might be a good idea but I don’t know how clean that would get it. I’m interested in seeing if that would work thanks for the idea

Because I don't have the space to store it and find someone that wants it. I bought it from a electrician that was tired of it being in his shop. I get tons of wire I can't keep it all. lol
My wife and I scap the Hvac systems I tear out after a new installation. I used to give everything to a scap guy. Until I tried scraping. What we scrap we can’t live off but we average around 2000 extra a month from scraping. I encourage everyone to scrap. It’s free money

I used to own a metal reclamation business and we would fill 40 yard trailers full of copper daily. We got all the metal for free, from 3 buildings that were over 10 acres each. We scrapped entire electrical substations. We pulled every copper wire and buss bar, and all data cable, from a 22 story building. We were given all the metal on all our jobs. We even had the local electrical union steal a full tractor trailer truckload of steal from us, then they called the building owner and told him what they had done. They said that they put the metal in the building and they get the metal out of the building. Unions are totally criminal.

hello Bonnie I’m Derek and am in South Florida. I’ve always wanted to see Kentucky I’ve heard its beautiful. The presses are custom built, The only thing new that I bought were the actual first price which was a 20 ton hydraulic press from Harbor freight that I modified and now I’m running a 25 ton enerpac 10,000 psi RAM but I paid $100 for and another hundred to have it resealed. The two speed 10,000 psi pump I traded some LED lights for and all the steel for the gig I pretty much got for free. The second price is 100% custom bill except for the Rams I got from Harbor freight for around 200 bucks. The wire stripper I bought used from an electrician for $250 and had to fix it and I modified it. I like to do things myself and use the barter system so it’s hard to put a dollar amount on it. But I’ve had them for 10 years and they work like a charm. Lol if you wanna see more on the presses I made a video titled “how to make $900 an hour processing copper transformer”. Everyone is going to disagree, but I hope the gentlemen who made the video sees this. It's not worth the time to strip/break everything down. You need space to keep everything on hand and you need machines and equipment to do it efficiently. Most of your day was stripping. If you took that time and worked on growing your clientele, your daily haul would be atleast atleast 2-3x the material you purchased here. Unstripped, your getting approx 85% of the materials value. All that stripping (most of your day/hrs worked) only gets you an additional 15%. If you used those hrs to buy additional wire and the like, your making more money. Customers like to see your truck full when you pull up to buy their stuff. They don't want to think they are the only suckers selling you their stuff. The evidence for my argument can be proven by the fact that these people dont take their scrap to the yard themselves. Their bread and butter Is doing as many jobs as they can. Its not worth their time to get an additional 20%. The refinery has expedited the stripping process, they do it efficiently, allowing the scrap yard to pay what it pays. Certain materials have a greater price difference between clean and dirty, but for the majority its not worth it. Ideally youd have your customers calling you asking when your coming because they're full. Stripping is good for the guy who doesnt do this regularly and just wants to maximize his profit. I used to think like you when I started working with a scrap buyer. He followed the buy it today sell it today model, everyday filling the truck before going to the yard. Eventually the volume of electrical componentry your buying and selling is simply to much to process it yourself. You dont make money stripping. You make money buying. Instead of trying to get 100% from 80%, your better off with that 80% multiplied by 8 jobs.
I’d have to say you are partly right, not everything is worth breaking down. But some of it is. Especially the transformer and larger wire. I used to have people in my shop processing it while I was out picking it up and it was well worth the effort to process it. in this particular video I had a bunch of spaghetti wire which yes takes a long time unless you have the right equipment is not really worth it. How about how fast you can process it, if you got the right equipment and the right Worker. I have all the right equipment but I’ve always struggled to find good workers. my theory is this if they’re buying the stuff to process it then it’s worth processing it. I will have to disagree with you on most of what you said because I plan on ramping up my processing abilities with a better and more efficient machines.
As someone who owns a scrap yard, and is 3rd generation, I fully agree. It’s hard to explain to customers sometimes but 25% of the time it’s simply not worth taking things apart. It’s dependent on the market of course, but if you’re getting 250-300/ton for your tin/shred, stop yanking out the compressors. Just toss the fridge and move on to the next item. Not to say cleaning material is not worth it, 75% of the time it is. But unless it has a bunch of copper, Rads, brass, or extrusion, I don’t see a value in the time investment. Also $1000 a day? Brother I love u and I want u to CRUSH IT out there, but ain’t no way people are going to make that type of money. On average (for my best scrappers I pay) I usually pay them like 1000-1500 a week cash. Unless you’re a demo business, electrician, plumber, etc…

@Project Shop Florida I would like to suggest an insert with a flange in the larger diameter hole. Like a washer attacked to a tube the you slide in to reduce diameter and should you need the original diameter you remove the insert. Could be that the original machine came with them or wire sizes were standard.

Just a suggestion I use bulk totes with lids cut off for trash lids I use to keep stuff from blowing out. I just dump my trash cans directly in them when I go to dump I just tip over tote from bed of my truck. Might save you some time dealing with trash.
I used to scrap about 3 years b4 all the people started buying junk cars and scrap hit like 300 or 400 a ton. And when it took a shit I couldn't do it anymore. I kinda miss it. All the people I got to meet and strange stuff.
I used to take transformers apart but lately been turning them in as a copper motor. From the way my local market is it just makes more sense to turn them in as a unit. I will strip wires though.
Copper transformers you can triple your money by processing them where with wire you only gain 1/3. That also depends if you buy them or get them for free.
@@ProjectShopFl Where I live it's probably the worst metals market in the country. Stuff has to be trucked out. I just do things different based on what I am dealt with. Other places have different fundamentals. I also just passively do this but if I did this as a job I might do things different.

You are very lucky to have shops give you the scrap. Every shop I’ve ever asked told me that they did their own scrapping and take a hike. The only way to get scrap ware I’m from is wait for people to throw it out and than you got to beat the other guys doing the same thing to it so those nice paydays are long in between times here. And I’ve never made a grand in a day or a week doing it.
I pay local market prices with free pick up and sometimes I beat local prices. I don't get anything for free.

Your the man, you work hard and deserve a good payday brother. The wire you stripped up to at least 17 min looks like a lot larger than AWG #2 gauge. Looks more like 0000 (4/0) or larger. Thanks for the video, you have some interesting machines. I know 1st hand how tedious stripping wire can be by hand with just a sharp razor knife in-hand, and pulling jacket off. We did this at my place of employment when our assembly work was slow. Your machine makes some of this stripping look so effortless. I used to wire up big “up to 125 hp” 3 phase motors and control boxes when building industrial screw type air compressors.

Rockefeller would rise from the grave himself if he heard of such profitability.

Used to be a scrapper, I would use an air chisel to cut the copper out the transformers. As for the aluminum, cut the same. Had built my own wire stripper to strip large and small wire. Everything went into separate barrels to haul. Would make about $900 to $1200 a week.

Thanks for the suggestion and your concern. I do have all the guards for the wire stripper but they came off the first time it jammed and I had to remove them to fix the jam. I will be putting guards on it just not the ones that came with it. Or I’m gonna modify the ones that came with it I haven’t decided yet.

Just stacked up a pyramid of transformers myself. 28 to be exact. Also just broke 14 the day prior. I use a similar process to press out the middle. Just using a hammer or an air chisel. I love that set up. Wish I had the connections for transformers like you do!!! Keep on stacking that recycled greeeenery!!!!!

You’re also gonna need a good buyer someone that’s gonna pay a good premium price I sell to an exporter so I get the same price as the scrap yard gets. Great video, how about get yourself a lug crimping tool….buy some clamps and make sets of seriously heavy duty jumper leads for the earthmoving industry? Vary the length according to what the customer wants and keep the price competitive, I bet they would sell like hotcakes! The bane of my life running earthmoving machines over the years was finding jumper leads not only long enough but heavy enough to carry the voltage without frying or losing current due to length, machinery manufacturers put batteries in some of the hardest positions to access…sometimes it’s not possible to get close enough too a machine, I made a 6 meter long set out of welding cable that were ridiculously expensive but worked perfectly until a thieving dog stole them and all the tools of my service vehicle. Price a set and see if it’s worth it for you…… cheers from Australia 🍻

A little design change for your stripper in feed is to make them like little funnels, so right the cutter wheel you have the right diameter for the wire your using, but a bit of a wider area to start it so it doesn't bunch up the insulation

I did consider the neighbors that's why I was rushing to finish cracking the welds before they got home. I've made many videos on how the machine works.

Aluminum melts at a much lower temperature than copper.
Have you ever thought about some way to melt the aluminum off the copper.

My wife and I scap the Hvac systems I tear out after a new installation. I used to give everything to a scap guy. Until I tried scraping. What we scrap we can’t live off but we average around 2000 extra a month from scraping. I encourage everyone to scrap. It’s free money

I used to own a metal reclamation business and we would fill 40 yard trailers full of copper daily. We got all the metal for free, from 3 buildings that were over 10 acres each. We scrapped entire electrical substations. We pulled every copper wire and buss bar, and all data cable, from a 22 story building. We were given all the metal on all our jobs. We even had the local electrical union steal a full tractor trailer truckload of steal from us, then they called the building owner and told him what they had done. They said that they put the metal in the building and they get the metal out of the building. Unions are totally criminal.

hello Bonnie I’m Derek and am in South Florida. I’ve always wanted to see Kentucky I’ve heard its beautiful. The presses are custom built, The only thing new that I bought were the actual first price which was a 20 ton hydraulic press from Harbor freight that I modified and now I’m running a 25 ton enerpac 10,000 psi RAM but I paid $100 for and another hundred to have it resealed. The two speed 10,000 psi pump I traded some LED lights for and all the steel for the gig I pretty much got for free. The second price is 100% custom bill except for the Rams I got from Harbor freight for around 200 bucks. The wire stripper I bought used from an electrician for $250 and had to fix it and I modified it. I like to do things myself and use the barter system so it’s hard to put a dollar amount on it. But I’ve had them for 10 years and they work like a charm. Lol if you wanna see more on the presses I made a video titled “how to make $900 an hour processing copper transformer”. Everyone is going to disagree, but I hope the gentlemen who made the video sees this.
It's not worth the time to strip/break everything down. You need space to keep everything on hand and you need machines and equipment to do it efficiently.
Most of your day was stripping. If you took that time and worked on growing your clientele, your daily haul would be atleast atleast 2-3x the material you purchased here. Unstripped, your getting approx 85% of the materials value. All that stripping (most of your day/hrs worked) only gets you an additional 15%.
If you used those hrs to buy additional wire and the like, your making more money.
Customers like to see your truck full when you pull up to buy their stuff. They don't want to think they are the only suckers selling you their stuff. The evidence for my argument can be proven by the fact that these people dont take their scrap to the yard themselves. Their bread and butter Is doing as many jobs as they can. Its not worth their time to get an additional 20%.
The refinery has expedited the stripping process, they do it efficiently, allowing the scrap yard to pay what it pays. Certain materials have a greater price difference between clean and dirty, but for the majority its not worth it. Ideally youd have your customers calling you asking when your coming because they're full.
Stripping is good for the guy who doesnt do this regularly and just wants to maximize his profit.
I used to think like you when I started working with a scrap buyer. He followed the buy it today sell it today model, everyday filling the truck before going to the yard. Eventually the volume of electrical componentry your buying and selling is simply to much to process it yourself.
You dont make money stripping. You make money buying.
Instead of trying to get 100% from 80%, your better off with that 80% multiplied by 8 jobs.
I’d have to say you are partly right, not everything is worth breaking down. But some of it is. Especially the transformer and larger wire. I used to have people in my shop processing it while I was out picking it up and it was well worth the effort to process it. in this particular video I had a bunch of spaghetti wire which yes takes a long time unless you have the right equipment is not really worth it. How about how fast you can process it, if you got the right equipment and the right Worker. I have all the right equipment but I’ve always struggled to find good workers. my theory is this if they’re buying the stuff to process it then it’s worth processing it. I will have to disagree with you on most of what you said because I plan on ramping up my processing abilities with a better and more efficient machines.
As someone who owns a scrap yard, and is 3rd generation, I fully agree. It’s hard to explain to customers sometimes but 25% of the time it’s simply not worth taking things apart. It’s dependent on the market of course, but if you’re getting 250-300/ton for your tin/shred, stop yanking out the compressors. Just toss the fridge and move on to the next item. Not to say cleaning material is not worth it, 75% of the time it is. But unless it has a bunch of copper, Rads, brass, or extrusion, I don’t see a value in the time investment. Also $1000 a day? Brother I love u and I want u to CRUSH IT out there, but ain’t no way people are going to make that type of money. On average (for my best scrappers I pay) I usually pay them like 1000-1500 a week cash. Unless you’re a demo business, electrician, plumber, etc…

@Project Shop Florida I would like to suggest an insert with a flange in the larger diameter hole. Like a washer attacked to a tube the you slide in to reduce diameter and should you need the original diameter you remove the insert. Could be that the original machine came with them or wire sizes were standard.

Just a suggestion I use bulk totes with lids cut off for trash lids I use to keep stuff from blowing out. I just dump my trash cans directly in them when I go to dump I just tip over tote from bed of my truck. Might save you some time dealing with trash.

I used to take transformers apart but lately been turning them in as a copper motor. From the way my local market is it just makes more sense to turn them in as a unit. I will strip wires though.
Copper transformers you can triple your money by processing them where with wire you only gain 1/3. That also depends if you buy them or get them for free.
