I had to pause this video and get Five Decembers immediately. I borrowed through Libby to read out loud to my husband. He doesn't have a choice. 😂 I know we'll both enjoy it. I also wanted to thank you for all of the amazing bookish content in 2024. I read and loved One Dark Window and Two Twisted Crowns and The Spy and the Traitor, to name a few. Happy New Year!!! Here's to a bookish 2025! 📚🎉🎉🎉
Any movie based on a Steven King book can never do the book justice... I really want to read the shining so I can read the sequels, but I haven't been doing as many scary books lately... I can't calm my anxiety. Maybe I'll eventually get to it. I read night circus years ago, my husband gave it to me as a gift, and I loved it!
Hiii Mr. and Mrs. Earl! I love your guys’ bond! You two are such an amazing vibe and couple. Can’t wait to see you guys soon after break. Happy early new years!🥳
Tayler the book ends completely different in the shinning so don’t worry 😂 loving the night circus too it just creates such beautiful imagery in my mind when I read it, such a different feel but it’s great so far
I loved Five Decembers! I lived in Honolulu for a bit and he was accurate in geography and streets and everything, which made it even more immersive for me. Even the corner bar he went to near the police station was real (not anymore but the engraving is still above the door). Such a fun book!
I loved Elantris! I think you will find that you enjoy Brandon Sanderson's worlds. I also just started reading Blood Over Bright Haven. One Dark Window was probably my favorite series of the year as well. So good.
I think it's so funny to be on that bookish journey with you guys! I just started to get back more into reading when Tayler started sharing bookish stuff on woolneedleshands. And after a fall at work I injured both my wrists so I had to take a break from knitting so what else to do... You also introduced me to the world of booktube and where I discovered so many great content creators! I'm also (finally!) reading The Shining right now and I feel exactly like you said, Tayler! Being a huge fan of the movie I started out looking for it in the book, but it's like this is a totally different story. It takes me ages to read and I'm not quite as far as you are right now (starting to get snowed in now I guess) so I'm really interested what I'll feel like once I get to the bathtub scene. I really wanted to finish it this year but I guess that's not gonna happen... 😅
Ah, I'm glad you are on this journey with us too. Sorry to hear about your wrists, hope you are feeling better now. Keep going with the shining, you'll thank yourself in the end for finishing it.
@GoodBooksLately oh I'm definitely gonna finish it. It's not that I don't enjoy it, it's more that I was expecting something different and still need to adjust my expectations. 😁
Tayler here! 👋 it’s so nice to know that you’re on this journey right along side us. When I started sharing bookish stuff over on WNH, I was just getting back into reading like you mentioned and knowing that you came along from that point is so cool. And you’re going to really begin to sink into The Shining once you hit roughly 300 pages. It’s good throughout, but that point is when things start to really unfold in a mysterious and sometimes scary way. I’m really enjoying it and I think you’re going to as well. So hoping for a better ending than the movie given the character development. Jack isn’t perfect by any stretch, but I’d love a different arc for him than what he’s dealt in the movie. ❤️
Tayler, your take on the story before they get to the hotel is spot on! This information is very important to the story once they get to the hotel. You are right to not expect alignment with the movie because the story the movie tells only slightly resembles the book, and if you are hoping for a different ending, know that the book’s ending is much different than the movie.
I went to some used bookshops and my dad treated me to some great books including: a 1970s hardback edition of War and Peace, and a 1983 illustrated hardback copy of A Christmas Carol. He also surprised me with two books I’d been looking at in a shop window (Alice in Wonderland, and Through the Looking Glass 1950s hardback editions😍). Like the book pillow! I have a book sleeve that also has a pocket in the front, which is super handy.
Thanks for the video. Never come across a book pillow before. What a great idea for gifts. Not necessarily like yours Tayler, could be hand knitted, crocheted or quilted etc.
I think Brandon accidentally hit on a new t-shirt merch, Books ARE expresso machines (for ones soul)! ❤the term expresso, bc reading nooks does help one sympathize/empathize with characters & situations you'd otherwise never experience & it concentrates those into an expresso of emotions!
I have Never whistle at night. I haven't read all of the stories in it yet, maybe 4 or 5 and they are fantastic! I also got it for the cover, it's so pretty! Happy New Year guys!🎉🥂
What a fun way to gift. BOOKS! No gifts here, hubby isn’t into gift giving. I just got done with Dark Places by Gillian Flynn, I just couldn’t get into it. Took me forever to get to page 47 but then OMG I got hooked clear to the end! Great book. Recommended by Jodie from The Grocery Girls. I’m reading Later by Stephen King, so far so good. There is a quote in there that made me giggle because I seriously had to look at the title again to see what book I was reading. I borrowed Gone Girl also by Gillian Flynn (I have not seen the movie). Thanks guys. Have a safe and happy new year! 🌻🎉🎉🎉
My husband gifted me "The Shining" for Christmas as well! I guess I'm a little more sanguine about books vs. movies, because I went in knowing the book would be completely different than the movie (which I love for what it is). I haven't gotten too far in, but I do enjoy Danny's inner monologue and his interactions with Tony. Looking forward to getting to the hotel scenes, with some trepidation.
Love the book pillow-- what a great gift! I will be reading Blood Over Bright Haven in Feb for another book club -- in fact, I am about to head out to B&N to pick it up and The Night Circus too! I read all books on kindle but already know that I will want Night Circus on my shelves 🖤
Love your videos and an innuendo video would be hilarious. My husband also got me those editions of One Dark Window and Two Twisted Crowns and I love them. Since Tayler loves them, she should try the Rook and Rose trilogy by M.A. Carrick. It’s a Venetian/Eastern European inspired fantasy in which the magic system is inspired by tarot cards. The first is called The Mask of Mirrors. I am a huge Sanderson fan and loved Elantris. I know the Cosmere can seem intimidating, but each piece can be read on its own. There are Easter eggs strewn about but not knowing them doesn’t hinder the enjoyment of the book.
Awesome! Thank you so much. I'll let Tayler know about those books, they sound like something she might like. Also, thanks for the info about reading Sanderson, I think once I get in, I'll feel more comfortable.
@GoodBooksLately I warn you once you start, it’s hard to stop. Sanderson has this way of slowly building a story, but then you hit a point (usually the last third or fourth of the book) that everything seems to happen and you can’t stop reading. It’s called the Sanderlanche.
Elantris is widely recognised as his least awesome book. I still loved it. Keep an eye out for the character, Hoid. That's my hot tip for reading Sanderson's books. Warbreaker is great. I finished the 5th Stormlight Archive within 2 weeks of it dropping. 62.5 hours long. 🥴
@GoodBooksLately You're very welcome! Lost in Discovery is a TH-cam channel that talks about the Cosmere. Also, the Coppermind is very useful. Beware of spoilers. Journey before destination. 🖖
This year I read The Ship Beneath The Sea The Discovery Of Shackleton's Endurance by Mensun Bound. This told the story of finding the ship. So then I got South With Endurance the photographs of Frank Hurley,
Brandon, you might enjoy a book I've been wanting to read for ages called A Pirate of Exquisite Mind; a good non-fiction book my mum recommended to me years ago. X
Horror is very much not my genre, so I'll likely never read Never Whistle at Night. However, I have to tell you that one of the stories in NWaN was written by someone from my hometown.
@GoodBooksLately Fort Smith, Northwest Territories (Canada). Richard doesn't live here anymore, but he still has family here. He comes home to do book events and things, so we run into each other once in a while.
I just wanted you to know that I am not stalking you, just helping. I don't really read much unless its about or to do with knitting, its one or the other, cannot do both. I mean knit and read.
If you want to read Sanderson I highly recommend you actually don’t start with Elantris. Start with the Mistborn trilogy. Elantris was his first novel and his writing has evolved so much, but keep Elantris close you will need it. Welcome to the Cosmere.
Honestly, I started with Elantris and got 30 percent of the way and was like no not for me. Then a few years later I was recommended to start with the Mistborn trilogy. Oh boy what a difference. You will read Elantris so keep it. Give Tayler a huge hug that was an incredibly thoughtful gift. You’re a lucky man.
Agree! Elantris becomes more meaningful after reading further in the Cosmere and has some fun Easter eggs for other books. Mistborn, or even Tress of the Emerald Sea are lighter places to dip in...but be prepared! Once you start, you'll be on a JOURNEY! And then you can also knit my Sanderson-themed sock patterns too hehe. I have sock patterns for Mistborn, Tress, Stormlight Archives, and his Skyward Series on Ravelry! 🥰

Oh for sure. Glad to hear night circus you enjoyed night circus. ❤️❤️❤️
Great podcast - how fun! You two are great together. Great voices and interaction. Very natural! I gotta join that bookclub!
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed the episode. You should totally get in on the book club. ❤️❤️❤️
Oh I read Five Decembers a couple years ago. It was awesome. The Shining was sooo good. Love the book pillow
Five Decembers really surprised me with how good it was. ❤️❤️❤️
Hiii Mr. and Mrs. Earl! I love your guys’ bond! You two are such an amazing vibe and couple. Can’t wait to see you guys soon after break. Happy early new years!🥳
Thank you so much Miss Haskins. Happy new year to you as well.

I came here to say the same - the ending of The Shining (the book) is VERY different than the ending of the movie!
That's great news! ❤️😁❤️
I read a beautiful graphic novel last summer about the Endurance, it called Oliphant by Loo Hui Phang. The illustrations are gorgeous.
I bet. Will have to keep my eyes out for it. ❤️😁
I loved Five Decembers! I lived in Honolulu for a bit and he was accurate in geography and streets and everything, which made it even more immersive for me. Even the corner bar he went to near the police station was real (not anymore but the engraving is still above the door). Such a fun book!
Oh man! That's great. Love that. ❤️
I loved Elantris! I think you will find that you enjoy Brandon Sanderson's worlds. I also just started reading Blood Over Bright Haven. One Dark Window was probably my favorite series of the year as well. So good.
Yay! That's awesome! I'm excited to get into some Brandon Sanderson books.
I thought that you were looking for the Lego magazine! 😂 The Endurance is one of their newer sets that is really popular right now.
😂😂😂 I know. It's looks like a very cool set to build too.
Really enjoy your reviews and have even bought a few to read and never been disappointed by your suggested reads!
I'm so glad! Glad you have enjoy the books and enjoyed us! ❤️❤️❤️
If you like the theme related to "Endurance", you might want to see the TV series based on a book entitled "Terror".
Oh, that sounds just up my alley. Thanks for the recommendation. ❤️❤️❤️
I didn't get any books, but I got a puzzle with Stephen King covers on it.
That's great! I love a great puzzle, and if it is book themed, even better. ❤️
I got the same pillow and blanket from my mother-in-law. I love it!
Oh wow! That's awesome. It's super soft.

@GoodBooksLately oh and the wrists are doing fine. They were just bruised, no major damage, just hurt a lot! 😅
Glad to hear you are doing good and that you are pumped to finish. 👍❤️

Thank you for another fun video - love all the Christmas “ready” gifts good for Mom!!!
You are so welcome! They were great gifts. ❤️❤️❤️

Those sprayed edges make books so beautiful and tempting!
They really do. 💸
I'm so excited! One Dark Window and Two Twisted Crowns are both on Kindleunlimited. Just downloaded them :)
Yay! That's awesome! 🎉
Thanks for the video. Never come across a book pillow before. What a great idea for gifts. Not necessarily like yours Tayler, could be hand knitted, crocheted or quilted etc.

Yes! A Good Books Lately video on my birthday! 😄
Happy birthday! 🎉🎉🎉
Endurance is my favorite book of all time and Shackleton is my hero.
Yay! So happy to get to read it now. ❤️
Endurance is well worth reading
Glad to hear that! Thanks. I will be reading it soon.
Elantris is widely recognised as his least awesome book. I still loved it.
Keep an eye out for the character, Hoid. That's my hot tip for reading Sanderson's books.

Love the Stormlight Archive. Got Wind and Truth for Christmas and can’t wait to finish Rhythm of War and start it.
Oh cool. I'll have to check it out.

Have you come across Lost in Roshar?
Endurance was a great read, I even got my husband to read it and he never reads non-fiction!
That's great! No better endorsement.

🤔 Sounds interesting. I'll have to look more into it. Thanks for the recommendation.
Endurance is on my list to read.
💯 rightfully so.

Please do tell….. where did mom get book pillow and blanket made?
Not sure, I'll have to ask her and get back to you.
Horror is very much not my genre, so I'll likely never read Never Whistle at Night. However, I have to tell you that one of the stories in NWaN was written by someone from my hometown.

We were in Vegas in mid November. All of us got sick, my youngest is still coughing and snotting!! What is this cold!?
Geeze! That's rough. I don't know what is going around.
I just wanted you to know that I am not stalking you, just helping. I don't really read much unless its about or to do with knitting, its one or the other, cannot do both. I mean knit and read.
No worries. Love that you enjoy what we do. 👍❤️👍

@ what? You know I am running to get those patterns! I love the order that Silvia from Library Unbound set out. Best for a spoiler free read. ❤️
I think that is why I can’t watch the movie then read the book, I just can’t do it
That makes sense.
