In this episode in our series of bonsai techniques we will be covering rough styling from collected material to selecting the main line and front and of course repotting into a shallower grow pot. The purpose of this progression series is to learn how take a tree from a grown material into a bonsai. When selecting for a truck line and front we evaluate the material to show off its best assets: nebari, width of the trunk, movement, branch placement, tapper. This video will be in conjunction of a series where we will dive deeper into trident maple species. So please join us in this new series. I love the the reverse taper on the lower trunk it gives it character

I have one tree that has knobs and knuckles which I call grotesque but it works for that tree. Tridents in my eyes should have great taper. But hey everyone has this favor.

Beautiful tree! Is there any updated vidoes? I'd love to see how much new growth to expect after a rough styling

Not yet!, I moved it twice this year. Usually with such an aggressive growth I try not to trim back again as I want the tree to reestablish itself. Currently it’s grown itself out of its pot and has some descent top growth but not enough to really start the refinement process yet. Next year it’s primed and ready to go.

Thank you for this video, I have found that doing major branch cuts at that time of year can sometimes suffer sap 'bleeding' from the large cut on tridents. So I've been doing major cuts in mid summer or autumn. But you clearly haven't/don't have this problem?

Bleeding does occur usually earlier in the season. However, if you trim the roots slightly or repot usually stops the bleeding easy. Or if you don’t want to mess with roots wait until later. But when I’m doing drastic styling I’m working on the root ball at the same time.

Just did one just like that, not as big but decent sized.

I wanted something smaller but this one called my name

@@BaikoenBonsai you have a pretty super nice tree. I'm still waiting on my bonsai funds to reup so I can purchase a tree from Ed myself. He has some really nice material!

@@mikevillarreal1539 I’m about to make another culling of my trees and starting to focus on about 30 trees now. One way instead of saving up is trading up.

I would never cut off all the feeder roots like that in one go. I know some trees like Ficus you can pot a stump and it will grow, especially in the tropics, but good luck with a Maple. Maybe it will survive, but it isn't worth the risk. I would take an extra year or two to downsize the roots safely. A dead tree in a shallow pot isn't worth much.

Thank you for the concerned comments. Quick update tree is already pushing top growth and I’m already selecting a lower new leader. Tridents that are healthy have no problem bouncing back here in Southern California. Not my first time I whacked a trident like this before. Usually if I’m going to ensure survival I would use bottom heat.

And put it in a green house or plastic tent to drive up humidity. Basically treat it like a giant cutting.

I'm going to find myself a trident maple.
That's a lot of cuttings off the roots. Will it survive?

It’s pushing already. I have pinched some of the top growth to simulate lower growth for a new leader.
