I watched the video hoping I would see how you did the coloring on the icing.....I don't think I would go through all that trouble for the layers but I love how you decorated the outside....:(
Yes, that's a great way to insulate the bowl. There's also lots of things you can wrap the bowl in, commercial or non-commercial to insulate it. I, personally, like crusts on cakes so I never both, but it's a great point worth mentioning for people who do so thank you.
omg that looks like wayyyy too much effort i would've given up at the second layer and started gorging it. kudos to you for being incredibly patient and detailed!
Awesome cake, i don'T know if you already try that but if you put the bowl in a water bath ( with like 1 inch of hot water) it will avoid the cake to becomming brown and will keep the exterior with it's beautiful color ! :>
Thank you so much for posting a tutorial of how to make these. The Jupiter and Earth cakes look absolutely amazing, and I'm hoping to have a crack at this technique for a science department bake-off in September (I'm a high school teacher).
I guess you could call it the lower cloud layer? It's really only there to provide a surface for the fondant to adhere to, or to stop curmbs getting into your buttercream if you're using that instead.
It's definitely the part that requires more skill, but it's made through well documented and well-known practices. The inside is the technique I came up with and what everyone wanted a recipe for so that's what I went with. But if you can paint, you can make the outside. It's not much different to painting with acrylic paint really.
Probably depends on personal preference, really. I'm an icing kind of gal. I love cakes with lots of icing etc, so I would serve it with a sauce or syrup or cream or anything else. But some people don't like much icing and prefer the cake part so they'd like it as is. Of course, if you're not adding fondant you can put as much icing around the outside as you like without having to worry about getting the fondant smooth. Next time I make it I'm gonna try a molten sauce or mousse layer.
Yeah the cutting process gives the impression of it being really dry. That's because the cakes end up with a thick crust, which is fairly dry. It happens a lot with hemisphere cakes because you have to bake it long and low -- by the time the middle is cooked the crust outside has become quite thick. When you get past the crust it's actually quite soft and light. That said, being a madiera cake it's not the most moist cake out there. But there's no difference between the texture of this cake and any of the madiera cakes I've baked normally. If you want to avoid the thick crust problem, you can bake it in a waterbath. If I had of known how much attention this cake would receive I probably would have prettied it up by doing things like that to improve the finesse!
Cakecrumbs Well us Space lovers definitely won't complain if you make another video. :D I've started my own Universe Day holiday and would love to present planet cakes as gifts, so seeing a waterbath process would definitely interest me. If you don't have the time though, I understand. :) Thanks again!
Definitely have a few more videos planned, and I have two other methods of making concentrically layered cakes in mind (one cake-sized and the other dessert-sized). It's just a matter of finding the time to do it!
The cake gets insulated by the batter, so the innards warm but don't cook. It's the same as a polkadot cake. The whole cake will, of course, dry out if you bake it too long. Getting the baking time exact is the biggest challenge of the cake.
I'm trying to make this cake for my daughter going on your recipes, for the vanilla madiera cake I have used the ingredients as listed but then looking at the method of combining them it says to fold in almond meal too, which isn't in the list of ingredients...help! do I need it or will it not matter to much? hope not as it's in the oven atm lol but just in case I thought I'd ask :) yours looks amazing, just hope this one comes out even half as good x
Sorry, I'm not sure I understand the premise of the question -- it doesn't matter what colour the inner circle, or any circle for that matter, is. It's only dark brown in this cake to represent the theoretical rocky core of Jupiter.
Do you not cover the inner sphere completely in the second layer of cake mix to avoid potential explosions caused by different layers heating up at different speeds without a way to rise or let steam out by normal means like how you aren't supposed to heat up or microwave a jawbreaker?
+Cakecrumbs Actually, that was the part I was most interested in. Disappointed and reminded of the How To Draw An Owl tutorial: Step One: Draw an oval. Step Two: Draw the rest of the fucking owl.
I wanna make this but I feel so lazy! :P I have the Wilton sphere cake pan, and the cake pops pan, but I don't know what size/pan I should use for the middle layer. Where did you get your trays?
I actually find cake levelers to be an incredible waste of money. I bought a $60 one when I started out and it just doesn't cut straight. I get much more even layers using a piece of string. For this cake as well you really want to take off tiny bit by tiny bit - you want full control over how deep you cut to make sure you're stopping exactly where the circle begins, or else the circles won't match up when you join it.
I can't speak for everyone else but everyone in my household loved it -- personally I like cakes with more icing. I've gotten messages from other people who've made it who loved it and no complaints yet. If it comes out as hard as stone you've probably baked it for thrice the recommended time.
I would advise you to talk in your videos, even with the text aid it becomes quite easy to become distracted. Your voice keeps the audience focused on the video.
Just a suggestion, for anyone dealing with food products perhaps maybe not have your nails so long. While watching your video I was very anxious about all the different foods and bacteria that could be trapped under your long finger nails...
I watched the video hoping I would see how you did the coloring on the icing.....I don't think I would go through all that trouble for the layers but I love how you decorated the outside....:(
Awesome cake! I too am fascinated by the swirls of Jupiter.

Awesome tutorial. It would have been nice to include the recipe and a demo of how you did the icing.
Yeah, I'd like to see how you went from 7:10 to 7:15.........
the jupiter cake recipe remains a secret
acrossthestars me to
you could coat it with white chocolate and freeze Then Decorate It
That looks amazing. You must be very talented.
I came to this video cuz it was in an article on Zite. Its an amazing cake! Looks awesome!
You should have put in the video how you do the surface! It looks so damn cool.
I'd absolutely love to make an entire solar system along with all the dwarf planets and satellites - I hope for the opportunity to do so one day!
That cake is out of this world!
Thank you. :] I definitely plan to make more in future, they just take a lot longer so I'll save them for the more complex recipes/techniques.
Thank you for sharing this. I thought it was really informative and well presented.

I wish I could hit the Like button 50 thousand times

Seriously amazing! Can't wait to see more from you
Aha! finally you're making videos. Hypnotizing to watch but most of all very insightful :B
These look amazing, but based on the video they seem to be super hard and dry, Is that true?
Yeah the cutting process gives the impression of it being really dry. That's because the cakes end up with a thick crust, which is fairly dry. Cakecrumbs could you make a basketball cake tutorial. But can you do it with out using fondant
Gavin NB ziebel
Yup! It's some random cake ball tin I picked up, I'm under the impression they're pretty common.
The cake gets insulated by the batter, so the innards warm but don't cook. It's the same as a polkadot cake. The whole cake will, of course, dry out if you bake it too long. Getting the baking time exact is the biggest challenge of the cake.
The carbon core looks a bit dry and charred. But that solid hydrogen layer looks juicy and delicious.
Hey I've seen this cake at Deviantarts that's so cool you have a TH-cam page yay!!!
The inside remains moist due to the way it's insulated during baking, as explained in the video. :]
This is cool! How did you decorate it? It looks like fondant and then somehow painted?
its so beautiful!!! but i wanted to see the decorating recipe took!
Would you kindly post a video on how to make mini earth cupcakes still with the 3 layers?
Beautiful work. I just have one question: what part of Jupiter is represented by the buttercream filling?
How did you paint the outside?...what did you use? Is it chocolate or caramel? Anyway, great tutorial
Sorry, I'm not sure I understand the premise of the question -- it doesn't matter what colour the inner circle, or any circle for that matter, is. It's only dark brown in this cake to represent the theoretical rocky core of Jupiter.
Would you pretty please provide a link to a tutorial which demonstrates how to paint the outside? Thank you :)
Do you not cover the inner sphere completely in the second layer of cake mix to avoid potential explosions caused by different layers heating up at different speeds without a way to rise or let steam out by normal means like how you aren't supposed to heat up or microwave a jawbreaker?
This is awesome. How long did it take?
Course YOU make it easy haha! you are a wizard woman, and don't you deny it. Us average Joe's would have a bit more of a hard time me thinks :P
I think it's Pyrex brand. It's a 1 litre pudding bowl.
Im intrested in the food colouring . Which one do you use here?
At the end how did you make it look like that not the inside the outside
I used food colouring and a small brush and painted it much like you would on a canvas: base colours, mid colours then highlights.
+Cakecrumbs Actually, that was the part I was most interested in. Disappointed and reminded of the How To Draw An Owl tutorial: Step One: Draw an oval. Step Two: Draw the rest of the fucking owl.
Are there measurements? GREAT VID BTW
I wanna make this but I feel so lazy! :P I have the Wilton sphere cake pan, and the cake pops pan, but I don't know what size/pan I should use for the middle layer. Where did you get your trays?
I got mine just from the supermarket or homeware stores. They're really commonly found here.
What were your measurements for the larger round cake pan?
Ha, I told you I'm not a magician! It's really quite easy.
How did you decorate the outside?? :0 you're awesome
Ok so if I were to make half of it then try to make it look globish basically, should I put it on a stick or what
shit. i was interested in the decorating part :D
You made my day
Technically, the core was baked 3x and the 2nd layer 2x. Don't they get burnt? Thanks!
Wonderful idea :)
I'm subscribing even though you only have one vid... :-) xx
to even it u can use a cake leveler
I didn't realize that I could use the mixing bowl to bake it. Is that what I saw here?
What size and brand bowl did you use for the largest layer(the blue)?
this is cool and all, but i think you forgot the most important part!! the outside
Why there's no recipe for this cake?
Does the lid at 0:49 come with the ball pan? thanks!
I'd hate to be the one to get a bite of that little cake pop that's been baked 3 times
Has any one tasted a cake like this after all this baking process. How does it taste. Is it puffy or hard as stone? Come on someone to answer....
I can't speak for everyone else but everyone in my household loved it -- personally I like cakes with more icing. I've gotten messages from other people who've made it who loved it and no complaints yet.

awesome :) nice job!
Is that intentional?
Concentric ---> Concencentric
That is so good thank you
What is the outside layer made of? 🤔
Wow awesome
divino pero no nos muestra como decoró el exterior...y es el toque final!! (algún secreto tenía que guardarse...no?)
I used mostly ivory edible ink.
what do you use to decorate the outside?
Nice !!
Thanks !
just to cool i love it
What ingrediants did you use?
How did you do the fondant
I wish you showed how you decorate the outside, cause that's the shit that looks complicated.
Very impressive :)
Can you make
A Uranus Cake?
How to do the cake cover?
I just love you!! lol. Thanks a lot!!!
i loved the song more than cake :D, but in can't find it through Shazam !!
i love this idea, however too much work for me i just want to eat the cake lol
The planet jupiter cake♃🎂
Canadian Astronaut Chris Hadfield brought me here.
What is this music from

Fondant and edible ink.
Wow 🤩
I am going to make a watermelon.
Kevin MacLeod has all this music hosted at incomptech(dot)com. The link to the music is in the video description. :]
Looks really cool but i think its very dry :|

wasted so much cake -_-
