As much as I can agree that SM3 handles the worsening of peters character better than SM2, I absolutely adore how feral Peter is by the end of his black suit storyline, in both the actions and especially body language. I just wish we spent a few more missions like that and had it affect free roam more

Indeed, the biggest problem with the game story is how they handled Peter and Miles. Peter is nerfed as fuck, being tossed around and unconscious during a lot of situation, while Miles is always on top, having boost all the time. And they have done that in n a story about Peter and Harry, with the symbiote and Venom as the main enemy, Peter's dark reflex ion as you mention in your video. Peter is seen as the weak old one (he is 25...), constantly needing help, being tossed around way too often to be innocent from the writers part. Miles is on the opposite side, even if he is not seen for a big portion of the game, is the one who have it all, being seen as the best in every way, praised and encouraged by the characters during his missions, not even criticized when he almost had people killed, and finally, he is the one who do all the heavy lifting in the final fight, even saving Harry ! The line "Why would this city need me when it has you?" was a big slap and very revealing of the writers true intentions for the story. It's not a "be greater. Together", two amazing people being Spider-Bros together. No, it's a replacement of the main character in the laziest way possible : nerfing the main protagonist and boosting the other one in every way. Miles is a perfect Gary Stu. I have often listened and read people opinion that Peter is not in his right mind because of the death of May... 2 years ago. Ok sure, it's human. But even if he have a lot of issues and not at his best because of it, at the end of the game, they gave him the anti Venom, a major boost that appeared because he solved his mental issues (thanks to Miles of course, they couldn't have Peter win this one alone...). And even like that, as you said in your video, he is shown for the last part of the fight against Venom, clearly showing that Miles is the strongest... Again, in a story centered around Peter and Harry as Venom !!! Cherry on the cake is the teasing for the third game about Doc Ock coming back and the Green Goblin. They are Peter's main antagonist, while Insomniac confirmed in an interview with Gizmondo that Miles is now the main protagonist... That's really, really, really a LOT. With the addition of Silk, it's even clearer that they will not do Peter justice because they want to push Miles as the protagonist.
The thing is, a game being bad is not as bad as a sequel game being bad. It disappoints you and it taints the first game. And it makes the wait not being worth it retroactively. And this does apply to all pieces of media.
Yeah, I see what you mean. Somehow, even if I really hate Spider-Man 2, I love Spider-Man 1 enough that it didn't t tainted it. My disappointment is mostly for 2 of course, but also at what I thought would be my favorite version of Spider-Man. I trusted Insomniac enough that in my mind I had 0 doubt that their Spider-Man games will be the perfect one... oh man, the disappointment was at the measure of my affection. I will keep Spider-Man 1 as a standalone, and try to forget about the rest.
I think miles getting another solo game is a good idea, with Peter taking a step back and providing advice more so than actual help. But it would have to be miles morales 2 and or something. The post credits scene between Norman and Otto seemingly teaming up to take down Spider-Man, Peter has to get involved somehow with them. It’s his two biggest villains and there’s so much substance between the three of them that it’d feel wrong for Peter to not make a final return to confront them
I hope so, but after Spider-Man 2, I have 0 hope that they will do an amazing Peter again. They will use him because he is the one with the history with Norman and Otto, they will undermine him like they did in Spider-Man 2, while Miles and Cindy will be the ones who will save the day.
If I had a nickel for the amount of times a monochrome villain is responsible for Miles Morales losing his dad, I'd only have 2 Nickels. But it's weird that it's happened twice.
Peter's story in this game certainly does suffer from some of the same issues as Spider-Man 3. Trying to do both the black suit arc and Venom, in addition to other conflicts, all in the same project just tends to turn the story into a bloated, poorly-paced mess. I genuinely think future Spider-Man movies and games should just do the black suit in one entry, and then give Venom a genuine chance to shine in the sequel. The black suit arc, especially as it has been done since the '90s cartoon introduced the idea of it making Peter more violent and short-tempered, is certainly strong enough to carry a story alongside another villain testing Peter, and Peter coming to his senses and getting rid of the suit serves as a strong pay-off with how it shows him choosing responsibility over the additional power the symbiote gives him. Venom, meanwhile, deserves better than being some final-act monster. I want a Venom who spends an entire game out to make Peter's life a living hell. Imagine going to stop a crime out in the overworld, just for Venom to randomly jump you. Have Venom absolutely eviscerate some petty criminals in the middle of the night, with eye-witnesses confusing them for Spider-Man since he was acting so much more violently himself a short while ago when he had the black suit. The thing that made Venom stand out from Spidey's other villains was that they were mainly just out to hurt Peter, both directly and indirectly. They have all the powers of Spider-Man, but none of the responsibility, at least at first. It's also the sort of starting point for the character that's made Eddie's journey such a joy to follow over the past few decades of comics. Watching Eddie accept that Spider-Man isn't responsible for the downfalls in his own life, and seeing the symbiote grow from its interactions with Eddie and its other hosts like Flash Thompson, has resulted in Venom having a stronger character arc and more changes to their status quo throughout their existence than Peter has had over the past few decades. In a time when Peter and so many characters surrounding him have been forced into stagnation by the editors, Venom and their component characters have been allowed to actually grow. It's a shame so many adaptations just want to use the symbiote as some big scary monster after they finish the black suit arc. It's like they've completely missed that part of what makes Venom so beloved by fans is the character(s) they bring to the table.
Ngl, SM2 has to be my favorite game ever, but it’s hard to keep playing if you’ve already fully 100%.. Bought it for the story mode and it didn’t disappoint but its a bit short for such an amazing game. Plus the crimes always disappear randomly when I swing to them 😭
I found the whole music museum quest anticlimactic. The man behind the theft was just some generic guy. It should have been a comic villain like Hypno Hustler or Big Wheel. The game needed more side-villains.
I just think the story was too ambitious for the run-time of this game. Besides, I feel like this one was more spectacle with (mostly) good character moments sprinkled in whereas the first game was good character moments with spectacle sprinkled in. I think the first game and Miles Morales even more so just felt more grounded. Like we got more community vibes, or at least more mask off looks into the lives of the Spider-Men. And I think Spider-Man 2 could have benefited from more of that too. A bit more with Harry (and give Harry and Miles a little screen time together). A bit more of MJ trying to address some issues she has with her and Pete’s relationship. A bit more with Peter dealing with his grief and being off his game. A bit more with Miles, Ganke and Hailey. I think the ‘Man’ part of Spider-Man man could’ve used a bit of extra content.
When I first played the game I was kind of disappointed with the story but I think it was mostly because Miles' story is better than Peter's and that's coming from a complete Miles hater. The way he subtly grows throughout the game, the scene where Martin Li, chef's kiss. Its amazing. My only complaint is the scene where Peter asks if the city needs him. I'm fine with Peter taking a break again, he nearly killed his best friend, but that line is not how you set that up. The game isn't bad to me but it isn't spectacular either. Is marvels spider man 2 the greatest game ever? No, it has issues like any piece of media does. I think this game just suffered from the massive hype train it had and will in some aspects succeed in others it didn’t. I think the characters are really hurt by the format of these being video games, since it’s harder to give a character substantial development and characterization if they aren’t playable. I kind of wish insomniac got more time to iron out some of the issues with the game and maybe even use some stuff like the life foundation symbiotes. But I won’t dwell on what could have been, since the game we have is fantastic in its own right and that’s fine with me, can’t wait for the update coming next month.

My favorite story moments in sm2 were the Miles side missions, they were more fun for me than even the MM side missions imo
