I love how videos “magically appear” on my TH-cam. I watched with tears because I too quit the Peru Great Divide in Huancavilica on August, 31, 2023 and rode the bus to Cusco. I was exhausted and suffering from constant stomach issues. I felt like a failure and cheater at first but I knew as a 62 year old female that I was doing an amazing job cycling the length of SA thru the Andes. Sometimes we are hardest on ourselves. Congratulations on your amazing journey!
I am 78 now and watching this episode of your adventure brings me back to my own experiences long ago solo kayaking down the Mackenzie River in NWT. It is an emotional journey and a physical one. It will nourish you a lifetime. Thank you for sharing your honesty and intrepidness.
Just saw the notification come through for your new video and after seeing the title, knew I needed to skip ahead and watch. While I'm only just starting your series, I plan on watching each one to use as support and inspiration for my own journey and adventures. What you're describing and experiencing is my biggest concern to following in your footsteps. You've already done such an amazing thing and there are so many people watching, following, and becoming inspired by what you've embarked upon and already accomplished to date. You're supported regardless of decision, but know that despite you being physically alone, there are thousands of people cheering you. For every like and comment you see, there are 50... 100... 1000x more who remain silent yet supportive. I don't comment on anything ever, so 99.9999999999999% I am that silent supporter. There are countless people just like me watching awestruck. Stay strong, amazing job!!
This is the first time I’ve felt compelled to comment even though I have followed your journey since Vancouver. As a fellow long distance solo bicycle traveler, I can easily identify with what you have experienced during your incredible travels. Yet I am overwhelmed and amazed at what you have accomplished and will continue to be so for whatever the remainder of your journey holds. You are not quitting nor are you cheating. You are adjusting to the situation which is what any experienced, competent bicycle traveler must do. Bicycle travel is to do what you must do, even if that means making difficult decisions along the way. Bicycle travel is not about a route nor a destination. It is about what lay between the start and finish. The destination is the journey itself and its experiences, not a spot on Earth where you end up when it is over. Should your adventure end today it is not a failure. Your journey has carried you to amazing places most people will never see even in picture books. You have encountered people who will always remain in your heart. You have learned to rely on yourself when times are difficult and to appreciate the good times. You have learned to welcome simplicity in a world of complexity. You have experienced life in a way that will shape you forever. The only failure would be to not start the journey.
Wow....redbagsrambler nailed it. I think it's really wonderful that you had the awareness to realize what you needed, when you needed it and to make it happen. This isn't a contest to cover X amount of KM via a bicycle. It's an inner and outer journey, adventure, that you wanted to take. And that's exactly what you're doing. Virtual pat on the back :) Loving your cinematic videos, narration, introspection and willingness to be vulnerable, open and honest.
Eres admirable, Carla! 💫💫 So many people follow your steps and I am sure most of us (your followers), totally ADMIRE what you have accomplished at your age!! You are the protagonist, The Main Character of this beautiful journey you share with us... Again, even your strength is "at another level"! Enjoy the awesome views, the different cultures, the air and at those heights 'the lack of air' 😂 Enjoy every step of the route and when you need to, I hope your eyes will fill with tears of happiness and very few from loneliness! Abrazos! Ricardo
Carla, You are fantastic, have no anxiety about taking a break and spending time away from the bike. You could probably have benefitted from leaving your bike with your friend and flying home for three months. What you do is exhausting, physically challenging and mentally draining and all without a support network in place. So no, I don't think you gave up. I don't think any less of you. In fact I respect you far more for having the courage to recognise your position and needs and to act accordingly. Well done you and please post more when you feel in a good place. Mean while.... Peace and Love!
OMG you had me on the edge of my seat for most of this one! I think it was the 17 century English poet John Dunne that said "No Man is An Island". I guess if he was alive today he say something more PC like: No one is self-sufficient; everyone relies on others. My son has Asperger's Syndrome and generally speaking is very self contained, but a couple of times each month he plants himself down beside my wife, daughter or me for a conversation. We all need human contact from time to time, there is nothing wrong with admitting that. There is a very fine line between testing your limits and doing something stupid which will impact your health or well being. Looks like you found that line and made the mature decision not to cross it. That is an achievement and not a disaster. So sail on (or rather cycle on) Carla in the knowledge that your achievements are very impressive and will trump any minor disasters are errors of judgments you make along the way.
Self-awareness is a very important trait. Failure would have been to rationalize to the point where you get yourself into real trouble. Recognizing when something isn't working for you, and to return to the joy of what you are doing and why you are there, might be difficult at the time but it is so important. Brava for taking action. Keep going on the journey that you want to take. Thank you for this latest video. 🙌🙌🙌
Its amazing how you find yourself in total despair only to see yourself later in a fantastic position. You've got through so many tough days only to find reward of some kind. Totally amazing! You surprise me on every video. Stay safe as always! Thx so much for the honesty.
The cinematography is at another level, and unbelievable that you accomplish the ‘voiceovers’ in your tent. You have mad skills. But the golden present you give us is the depth of your introspection along the way. We owe you so much. Peace, Michael
Carla don't never ever think that you have failed! I have followed you since the beginning of your journey and enjoyed it all. You have been honest about your emotions and that makes the videos so special. I hope you'll one day understand the physical and mental strengh you have. I'll always think about you as a winner. I can understand how hard it was to make the decision to take the bus, but at the same time I know it was the wisest ever! It is only your mind which try to push you over your limits, not anybody else!
You are one of the bravest and strongest people I know. I hear you when you describe the silence and the loneliness and the emotions involved. You did not fail. I’m sick about the horses you saw. It also breaks my heart. I could not have handled that - especially alone. You have the fortitude of a lioness. You will see all of this differently in the future. ❤
Just came across your channel. You can’t quit now! Binge watching from the beginning of your videos to catch up to current. Love your spirit and attitude. Very refreshing. Hang in there! I did the Pacific Bike route in 1976 when I was a 17 yr old kid and have been adventuring ever since. It never gets old. Cheers, Doug
This one is excellent. Great job capturing and expressing the very real feelings that you’ve faced on the road; wanting to escape but not being able to, feeling the depths of lonesomeness and not knowing if or when it will end. Raw and vulnerable, as it gets to be out there. ❤
Thankyou carla for shareing your amaseing adventures with us, there is no such thing as cheating or giving up on a bicycle tour, you have to adapt and do what's best for you at every moment of the journey, and not worry about what other people think. Look after yourself and love yourself, big hugs!!
The journey is not only physically demanding but mentally draining as well, you don’t need to prove anything, you have accomplished what others just dream! Keep going! Just take enough time to rest, recover physically and mentally. I hope I can come back to Colombia and retake my tour south!
You are not cheating, and you are not failing. You left in your own terms and your journey continues. This is YOUR journey, you are the boss of your journey 😊 I am very glad you are happy with your choice, was super pleased that a friend was waiting for you in Cuzco. I was in Manchu Pichu myself in 2006 and the top was very crowded, a bit disappointed because of the crowds. It is supposed to be a sacred space… I hope you managed lots of rest for your body and soul, great visit with your friends, and winds in your tail, whatever route you may want to pursue. Sending hugs, Carla! The horses with the tied legs, OMg who would do this and why? I have no words.
Hola Carla! Gran respeto a ti. No perdiste. Ganaste 9 meses extraordenario. Tus esperiencias seran para siempre tu tesoro. Te felicito!!!👏
Beautiful video Carla. This journey is so much growth. We appreciate you immensely. You make many of us company as well when we are on our life journeys, just the same as you feel connection with us.
I feel that so much! ❤️❤️ And we all have failures in out daily lives, I hope to take this lesson back to my “normal life” once I’m done with this adventure to be able to take a step back when something doesn’t go as planned! Thanks again for the support ✨
@@carlagoessouth And indeed, you never give up in life. You just sometimes choose new paths that suit you. After this decision, you have reached a new height of freedom that you will appreciate for the rest of your life. Like all the other steps you've taken. Gracias for sharing it all with us!
I know how much the positive comments mean. I'm in the same boat. The cycling isn't even the hard part and the cycling is really really hard. You're doing great!
Carla, you can be so so proud of yourself. Your reflection and self love are inspiring and very important to overcome the challenges of this adventure. Keep rocking!
I left my house one morning planning to ride across Canada then fly to Japan and ride around there. 3 days was all I lasted. The entire time all I could think about was Japan and how spending 3 months riding across my home country that I've already seen several times was an obstacle. I finally admitted to myself I just wanted to go to Japan so I turned around and went home and bought a plane ticket. Bought a bike in Tokyo and did my Japan tour. Nothing wrong with changing plans, it's your journey, you get to decide how to take it.
Dear Carla, you absolutely haven't cheated or failed at all, the moment you set off from Vancouver you had succeeded! Your physical and mental endurance have been off the scale 🚀 on this trip and when your emotions get back to 'normal' you will realise just what a massive achievement you have completed! I'm not just saying this to help make you happy, I'm saying this because my own long distance experiences have put me in this situation many times. You really are a seriously strong person and I admire you so so much! Thank you for giving us this amazing journey to follow. I look forward to seeing you again on another journey when you are ready for it 🙏 You have my very best wishes 🚲🏕️👏🙂👍
Girl, you've already cycled for months an many many thousands kilometers. You've seen so many places, met countless people and faced very hard times. There's no way that can be considered as a failure.
Don't despair Carla ! You are doing exactly what you were meant to do .....and crying can be a way to make you feel better, by releasing Tension ! Keep up the good work...and love from a place not far from Lismore Australia 🚲🦘🇦🇺🌹
Hey Carla….It no big deal to take take a bus to leapfrog a section of your route - to change the route - take a bus, hitchhike - or anything else. That is all part of adventure travelling. You are over 300 days along and nothing can diminish what you have accomplished. I’m still a big fan Jim
We are not giving up on you, oh no 😉 So, yeah! Take a break, take a bus, do something different but that also makes you happy. And come back when you are ready. Life's not perfect, but you're doing a great job. You lived and experienced more than most people in a 1000 years. I am sorry that you weren't able to enjoy these last days. But the constant rain and the altitude didn't help. I wanted to be there with you, to share the difficulties and to cheer you up. But those landscapes... oh my god! Breathtaking!!! Wishing the sun and blue and white skies become more present for the rest of your adventure 🤞 See you on the next video 😊
Carla, we always support you! No estas sola. Praying for more network connections so you can always link up with your loved ones. We envy your ability to be in most wonderful places. Treasure it. Remember it. Go for it! ¡Eres mas fuerte de loq ue piensas! .... wait, what? Coca leaves??? 😁
Keep going! If you're anything like me... Doing heavy exercise at altitude REALLY affects my mood. I get negative and sad. You're doing great and as you go lower in Altitude you might find a new perspective
T'estimem molt i t'enyorem ❤❤❤
There can be no failure when you have come so far Your mental health and well being is so much more important than if you rode your bike or got a ride Stay safe and trust yourself
I went to a very similar experience on my peru divide. Its rough. I was lucky it was completely dry for me but halfway in i bailed aswell. Its better to divide the divide before it divides you ❤
Hi Carla, Please don't be so hard on yourself. The word's Carla , Bella , and failure should never appear in the same sentence. You are " one tough lady ". If you were my daughter, I would be extremely proud of you ! Regards, Neil.
I loved Machu Picchu and Cusco (Peru in general); I got to visit about 6 years ago. Did you get to visit Urubamba (the sacred valley of the Incas), it was one of my favorites parts of Peru. In the village of Machu Picchu, the statue of Christ (Crucifix) inside the Church of Our Lady of Carmen to the right of the altar, was amazing and that photo is one of my favorites of the entire trip. Stay safe and know that you CAN DO IT. QDTB and stay safe
How human to want to laugh and cry at the same time. Welcome to my life. Another technical question if you please. I see something on the back of your bicycle that looks like a solar panel. Is that correct? And if it is a solar panel, does it work? Thank you.
Hola Carla. Mucho tiempo no saber de ti. Claro que me preocupo si estas bien after nueve meses "viajar" contigo. So if posible darnos un saludo corto.😊
Wow❤ I haven’t gotten this far yet. I love cycling. I love watching others journeys. But wow. Your awesome. Like this one guy Ryan Van Duzer is an athlete and the Baja Divide has stopped him twice he’s currently doing a third try. But that’s just the Baja Divide, You, went from Canada to….here. That’s sick man. Because guys aren’t doing what your doing. So, ….like are you gonna do something else? By the way liking the jazz stuff with the deep bass. It very good. So what’s next? France stuff? Spain stuff? Switzerland? Dude, that’d be awesome. ❤
While I know it is hard being away from your family and friends on this journey, think of it as an infinitesimal time away from loved ones in your journey of life. I'm sure in the end the reward will be worth the sacrifice! I'll paraphrase the wise fish Dory here “Just keep cycling. Just keep cycling, cycling, cycling."
I just took a camioneta and a bus from somewhere in Oaxaca after vomiting profusely and running out of water with a broken chain and failing brakes/bottom bracket, to rest and fix things. Don't need to do every centimeter by bike haha Love Cusco, my favorite 'city' for whatever reason. Blessings and good luck going forward Update: the bottom rack mounts are both toast now the rack is held on by galvanized steel wire, heat exhaustion psychosis in El Salvador... I would love to cycle in freezing rain at 5000m instead of 40C and humid on flat 😂 to be honest. Might skip this bit, have to go home and work in 40 days anyway...
I took Public Transit and subsidized rail from Vancouver to SanDiego in November. #MountCurrieToTheMexicanBorder. The Oregon bus driver lady told me about you. Like you, I had an A-B direction, but I had multiple options. I also made rules before the trip began. If your idea was to bike the entire route (no bus, car, train, planes) and you chose to train a part of it, then yes - you cheated. You’re not Lance Armstrong or Barry Bonds: no one is competing with you. It’s okay, you can still say you biked from Vancouver to Argentina. However, when saying so it would be honourable to mention that you took a train to help you during a difficult stretch. Our own rules are made by no one but ourselves. Sharing them allows others to measure the rulers success by objectively looking at how long they last and are adhered to.
In the last several videos you have complained about loneliness and monotony. Why didn't you arrange with other people on the cycling-the-Americas Whatsapp group to ride together? There are so many cyclists on the Peruvian Divide, if you can just be flexible with your schedule. When I cycled that route, it was very social.

Ending this video in Machu Picchu was the perfect way! It's such a magical place, it resonates what's in your soul. Self care is everything.
YES!! It really did cure something in me haha
Girl, you've already cycled for months an many many thousands kilometers. You've seen so many places, met countless people and faced very hard times. There's no way that can be considered as a failure.
You are precious Carla. Thank you so much for these brilliant pieces of art.
Glad you like them, thank you so so much 🥹🥰
Don't despair Carla !
I’m still a big fan
Jim
Te extrañamos chica!
❤️❤️❤️
We love the honesty ❤ Peru has been challenging for everyone but after the rain it comes the sun ☀️
♥️♥️
Carla, people loves people as you. No matter what you do... We love you !!!
🥹 Thank you Marcos! It means so much!
Congratulations Carla! What ever you decide
Thank you Steve!!! Real Support here!
We are not giving up on you, oh no 😉
So, yeah!
Wishing the sun and blue and white skies become more present for the rest of your adventure 🤞
See you on the next video 😊
Carla, we always support you! No estas sola. Praying for more network connections so you can always link up with your loved ones.
We envy your ability to be in most wonderful places. Treasure it. Remember it. Go for it! ¡Eres mas fuerte de loq ue piensas!
.... wait, what? Coca leaves??? 😁
Muchas gracias!!!
Keep going! If you're anything like me... Doing heavy exercise at altitude REALLY affects my mood. I get negative and sad. You're doing great and as you go lower in Altitude you might find a new perspective
T'estimem molt i t'enyorem ❤❤❤
There can be no failure when you have come so far
Your mental health and well being is so much more important than if you rode your bike or got a ride
Stay safe and trust yourself
You’re so right!!! My decision ended up saving my mental health for sure haha Thank you Kurt!
I went to a very similar experience on my peru divide. Its rough. I was lucky it was completely dry for me but halfway in i bailed aswell. Its better to divide the divide before it divides you ❤
Hi Carla,
Please don't be so hard on yourself. The word's Carla , Bella , and failure should never appear in the same sentence. You are " one tough lady ". If you were my daughter, I would be extremely proud of you !
Regards, Neil.
This(Carolina’s) is my favorite reply of the adventure. Yup, I read the replies, they’re part of the experience.❤😂😊
Hi are you really done? Or still on the bike? Last video was month ago. My adventure starts in 6 weeks. Biking to Spain near Barcelona.😅
Gran, Carla!!
Por fin me animé a hacer uno!!!! ❤️❤️
Oh merci beaucoup ! Un beso!!
So impressive. Gracias. Una aventura dificil!!!!
Olé!!! Si entiendes una conversación sobre plantas raras.. tu español va por buen camino jajaja 💕 thanks for the support!
Don't need to do every centimeter by bike haha
Love Cusco, my favorite 'city' for whatever reason.
Blessings and good luck going forward
Update: the bottom rack mounts are both toast now the rack is held on by galvanized steel wire, heat exhaustion psychosis in El Salvador... I would love to cycle in freezing rain at 5000m instead of 40C and humid on flat 😂 to be honest. Might skip this bit, have to go home and work in 40 days anyway...
Incredible so inspiring
Thank you so much Lindsay! ❤️
You've got this!
Thank you Adriane!!!
I ride for fun so I don't blame you, once the fun stops I stop. That's why I don't think I would attempt bikepacking in the winter.
Once the fun stops, I stop… LOVE IT!
@@carlagoessouth Your videos are epic thank you for sharing your adventures it is inspiring.
Where you camped is beautiful. Peru is a beautiful country...🇧🇷
It was beautiful indeed!
Grande Carlita 💪💪💪💪🚴💨❤
Gracias!!!! A seguir!!!
Hi Carla! Wazzup? We haven't seen your videos lately 😢
Keep Going!
That's the plan!💪🙌🏽
The narrative of being self-aware, philosophical, and renewing oneself to make a new start…
… excuses.
Ànims Carla, viatgem amb tu. Ens encanten el teus videos, comentaris...
Tots tenim moments alts i baixos 👍
Moltíssimes gràcies per la força, Josep! M’ajuda molt 🫶🏽
So sad to see those horses maybe that’s how the locals keep them from running away
Yes… that’s what I figured.. so sad 😞
Poor horses..
I think you're fabulous
Haha you’re too nice!!
@@carlagoessouth look forward to following your future adventures, take care young lady 😁🙏
People who know about horses ---- what is wrong with those wild horses that they walk like that?
Tied front legs. Sign of "ownership" by someone. They do this with camels, here in the Gulf.
Yeah.. that’s what I thought… 😢
Who are you cheating?? That's not cheating!! Admirable!!!
Ay, muchísimas gracias!!!
