    This is terrific. The orchestra is superb, and Mr Bird does us a great favour by bringing this music to us, and playing so well.
    It can be difficult to acquire the taste for Delius. The music is so free of traditional formality that it's easy to lose the thread. But the emotional expression is remarkable. It's hard to think of another composer like him, although there are shades of Grieg, and in this work, a hint of the Siegfried Idyll.
    It is a work that is wonderfully free in its musical wandering, and the cinema music from the Golden Age of Hollywood seems to owe something to his style.

      As a Delius fan, I'm almost a fanatic. However I have raved about Delius to people who were not touched by his music when they heard it.

      @@feraudyh I've experienced the exact same thing... I know we are all different, but Delius has an effect on me that nobody else does, and I am amazed when others really can't appreciate his music.

    Thank you for posting. As a singer, I'd always loved his vocal work and am thoroughly enjoying the discovery of beautiful instrumental treasures such as this one -- which have led me to the conclusion that he was a very underrated composer.

    Cripe, the only way I even knew about this piece was an old Decca checkered-label vinyl lp of Marjorie Mitchell with William Strickland conducting.
    How refreshing to see this on video AND very well done. Thanks for posting.

      I remember it ! Didn't she also record the Busoni "Indian Fantasy, coupled with a Bortikiewicz concerto (?!), with these same folks? Both nice pieces but not a pairing I'd expect. Maybe the composers had a common teacher tho I don't recall old US Decca/MCA being that calculating about their classical line !😆
      I don't recall whether Howard Mitchell , National Symphony probably right after Kistler, was her brother, husband, or father but there was an elderly gentleman in my home town of Grand Rapids, Michigan who played in his fellow section and he had some funny things to say about Mitchell, another recording regular back in those days.
      Like this rendition of the Delius! Soloist, orchestra, and conductor, spot on. Really good. The piece so often gets a bum rap; maybe this version of it hangs together better? Don't know whether the other recorded versions, Mitchell, Kars ? et al used this edition. Played with a lot of conviction here, but technique too not that Kars, Mitchell et al ( Beecham's wife, I think ?) were slouches. Glad this has been posted !

    Well. I think Delia’s wrote using the Manatee Method: he had balls floating in water, each with a chord written on it, and a manatee would flip a ball out of the water. Delia’s would use that chord, then the manatee would flip another chord out at random and Delia’s would use THAT chord for a while, and so on. And he managed to pull it off fairly well.

      I respectfully disagree Doc, on the spectrum of functional to nonfunctional harmony, Delius sits very far on the functional side. Can you pinpoint any places you hear randomly chosen chords? I'd love to do some theoretical analysis on the music.

      @Frederick Delius Legacy - And Far Beyond I remember the High Fidelity review - they were so big - of his Village R&J in the 70s, re his supposedly weak counterpoint training ( "Jadassohn "?"Sitt" ?) Delius couldn't write a country fair scene as well as Stravinsky but of what matter is that ? Delius is truly unique.

    • @gregorypalmer5403
      @gregorypalmer5403 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was a quote of the review about Stravinsky. I didn't come up with it. 40 some years later, though , it is a memorable compliment to Delius. Not that Delius would have cared, the old curmudgeon ! 😁

      Frederick Delius Legacy - And Far Beyond What? A Delius pimp? I’ve seen everything now............j/k...........”Delius troll” is a name I will treasure to the grave, maybe even beyond. I love Delius and, spending a lot of time in South Florida, have developed a sincere affection for manatees as well. FWIW, I am an avid fan of Schoenberg in his polychromatic but hasn’t lost his mind yet phase. I love Transformed Night and Pelleas and Melisande. If anything Delius is a bit too tame for my tastes. I am only suggesting that Delius’ use of harmony is at times a bit adventurous.
