This is one of your most rewarding videos; kudos for the terrific effort in really burrowing into the details, as well as the great production/editing!
Dave's editing is impressive. From that opening with the skeleton effect to the fact that that's not blue paint & yet it's consistent throughout. Even if that's all simple shit that's just on his editing software, it's still effort. 👍
Sam Anderson I’m not blueing myself for this. Troy did that for Halloween 10 years ago and left blue paint smears all over everything in his apartment. We went the easier route and green screened the whole thing. Despite being a firm supporter of practical effects.
@@ImperiusRex Okay fixed my typo. 😂 Also it depends on how many hours separate those shits. If it's taken all day it's fine, but if that just this afternoon...that might be an issue. 😉
Great one guys, so excited to see more! I was probably 13 or 14 yrs old when I first read Watchmen and it plunged me DEEP into the comic world. I've re-read it several times over the years and always find something new to love. I find myself bouncing between loving and hating both Rorchach and Ozymandias. It also took me 3 readings to catch the panel layout in Fearful Symmetry...
I think I have the exact same experience. Especially with Fearful Symmetry. Didn’t catch the layouts on the first reads until I learned about it. Then I’m still amazed every time I read it just HOW much it mirrors the preceding pages. Haven’t had a reading experience yet where I don’t walk away catching multiple new moments.
Recent subscriber. I learned more about watchmen in this video than I have in 10 years since I first heard about it via the movie. I have read the graphic novel a few times and never noticed all the blood smears, clocks, and smilies. Danke schön.
Great to hear Sean! This whole time I've been kicking myself because I feel like we didn't get as deep as I wanted to... so much to cover! Glad it was informative, and thanks for coming aboard!
Good to see you two back. I've missed you two's misadventures together, even though it's been like three/four weeks lol. By the way, 'any excuse to have your shirt off' still has me dead. As for Watchmen itself. I'm actually thinking about rewriting my own review of it on my Goodreads page, as well as for V for Vendetta, as the works of Alan Moore can never really get you the 'perfect' review, not that I believe in perfection anyways. Watchmen is a lot of things, it's an examination of superheroes thrown into our world, how absurd the idea of superheroes is, an examination of our world, especially in the world of the 1980s, it's a book that asks you hard questions about morality and what is right. It's so many things that I'm not even sure what it's about. But perhaps that's not a bad thing, because Watchmen is about many things asides from superheroes existing in our real world. I think what a lot of people in the 90s like Liefeld and McFarlane failed to realize is that Watchmen isn't just this gritty drama. It's about anything you want it to be, and that's why I still think it's survived to this day. Great video as always, and I have to ask. Were you really blue in this Dave? Or were you CG'd?
Some Okie Dude great analysis! Very well put. There’s so much more I want to get into on this book- I feel like we haven’t even scratched the surface. And I’m due for a reread on V for Vendetta again too. I hate to say it, but from what I remember, (I think I liked the movie better- blasphemy!) I’m hoping a second read improves my appreciation of it. And to answer your question- it was movie magic. Lotta time in the gym- and green screen. Not sure if you can tell- but this entire thing is on a green screen. Both of us.
And the gritty drama is right on too. There isn’t anything particularly edgy or gritty about Watchmen. It’s just a mature book. In terms of storytelling. As usual, the wrong lessons were learned when it came to imitators.
i first read watchmen in 2020 during quarantine, with the end of the world feeling closer than ever it hit me hard, tho being younger much of the hidden messages and links flew over my head. i just re read it and i appreciate it a whole lot more than when i did the first time. it definitely deserves the place of favourite comic of all time. loved this discussion even though i’m 4 years late
🖤🖤🖤 I’m pretty new to the channel and I’m thoroughly enjoying the content. Hands-down this has been the best of the episode. I’ve watched so far. Love Dr. Manhattan.
What a great video to start the year off !! Love that the channel is growing . Watchmen is such a cool comic unfortunately the first time I read Watchmen was after the movie so lots of it was spoiled. I agree though every time you read it you find something new it never feels old . Great job boys !
I was laughing my head off as Dave floated towards and over Mars. The first time I read WATCHMEN was as it came out. I love Watchmen. And don't forget (as well as all the great comics you mentioned) in that same time period you also had the Justice League relaunch AND Perez's Wonder Woman. During the late 80s the only Marvel title on my pull list was Avengers. DC was killing it and there were so damn many fun independents coming out. Even though BEFORE WATCHMEN was uneven, I liked most of it. I enjoyed the movie, I'm looking forward to the series. Having said all that, to me - FABLES was a better comic, and PLANETARY is the best comic ever.
Unruly Simian I can’t imagine reading it as it came out. Not sure if it would carry the same weight having to wait between issues. We are both pretty positive on the Before Watchmen series as well- and the movie. And while I haven’t read Fables yet, Troy dug it a lot. And we both carry a brightly lit torch for Planetary! Top 5 book for me. Future Tattoo material.
I guess I should go back and read it again, it's been about 10 years I think? Watching this has made me think I should do some research on it though as I read it, never new the thing about the Tarot card before.
lonelybrick I would recommend reading it in conjunction with Comic book Girl 19’s Watchmen club episodes. Gives you so much depth and insight on all the little details. And she’s a delight. She’s got a video for every issue on TH-cam and it’ll give you about all you can ask for in terms of deeper meaning and examination.
Thank guy great shows like this make me pick up a classic to enjoy it again this time on so many different levels...(in my Dr Manhattan voice) god like almost... being able to tell what the outcome will be while finding beauty in it that was not there before......😂😂😂 and the ending makes you see just how ridiculous Docs wife really is I mean come on hes got the power of a god and you're mad he was able to pleasure while working on a machine to save the world? Women... always wanting it all😂😂😂 thanks again gents keep up the amazing work!!!
I like to run. This might've been peak fit-ness. Or around when we reviewed 300/Sin City... I've ingested more donuts and pizzas since then. Trying to get back at it in case I need to make another Dr. Manhattan appearance...
Watchman year is coming to a halt close to the before watchmen review, Pax americana, and doomsday clock. If they come out January or February we can just say Troy reset the clock a little bit.
Phenomenal job. Good jokes. The Watchmen episode is inevitable. You cannot resist the greats. I can't do Before Watchmen or Doomsday Clock. Those feel wrong to me. No disrespect to people who enjoy it or work on it. Just not for me.
SSJ2VEGEROTRULES totally understand. I’m a pretty firm believer in- if I love something- I’m open to more interpretations of it- if it sucks- oh well, we still have the original. And if it’s good- even better. Now we have MORE of something I love. Granted- I go into it knowing that they won’t hold a candle to the original- but if it puts in the effort- I can find a lot to enjoy. Most of Doomsday Clock has been well done. Not sure how much I ENJOY it yet- and it isn’t anywhere near the masterpiece that Watchmen is- but you can tell everyone onboard is really giving it their all- and I respect them for that. Same with the Before Watchmen books. They weren’t perfect, but everyone involved did their homework, nothing negated the original, and we came away with some fun little “bonus material” from some of the top creators in the biz.
Shout out to the one person who keeps thumbs downing us as soon as the episodes go live! Keep on living the dream, friend!

Thanks Grady- if you dig this, check out our Flex Mentallo vid... that's another one where we bumped up the production value...
