"DISNEYCEMBER 2021 blog" day 20 goes on a cruise with "Jungle cruise" staring the rock & Emily Blunt & seeing a film based on a Disney ride make sense if you aren't seasick I even heard the ride have a flood accident on awhile back but they fixed that & way too many jungle puns to count in this so in closing if your seasick or not go to "Disney +" & give "jungle cruise" a watch as you sail to the unknown to adventure."

Fun fact, this is the first Disney movie my father has seen in cinemas since the 60s when he was a kid. The reason?
He had nothing else to do all day and decided to go see a movie, and nothing else was even remotely interesting.

Emily Blunt is really good in general?
      Really?
You realise she comes off in this film as Rachel Weisz very very LIGHT right?
Jungle Cruise is a fine family film but that's all it is - Just "fine", not great, not even particularly good, just a nice easy film to watch with a smile on your face.
It's no Romancing the Stone or Jewel of the Nile.
It's no Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom or Last Crusade.
It's no The Mummy or even The Mummy Returns which despite having major problems still has far more plot, excitement and stakes to it.
      It's no Jumanji either.
Dwayne Johnson is pretty average for him - Yes he's not slumming it like in Red Notice but he's not at the level he hit in Jumanji either.
Paul Giamatti's role is basically a cameo.
Jack Whitehall does a pretty good job in the John Hannah brother role {again they're copying the Mummy} but he's no John Hannah.

When I found out they were making a movie staring the Rock, a famous African-Samoan-American wrestler and were calling it "Jungle Cruise," I thought Disney had decided to go back to some of their work from the 1940s and 50s. You know, their racist stuff. But it just looks like a bad kids movie with a lot of bad CGI. You know, what you'd expect from a kids movie in 2021. Didn't The Rock do a movie almost exactly like this a couple of years ago? That sequel to the Robin Williams movie that I saw while having back surgery in the 90s as a teenager? If they ever create an American version of James Bond (or hell, he can be Felix Leiter) and Jeffrey Wright isn't available, The Rock should play him. He's a terrible actor, but he's charismatic and delivers one liners almost as well as Will Smith in the 90s. Almost. And if they get a James Bond as lame as a 13 year old boy like Pierce Brosnan, he'd be a perfect fit. They can spend the whole movie trying to beat each other with catch-phrases. I won't watch it, but at least it would be tonally consistent. Just the title and the poster make me uncomfortable as a white guy. I mean, must we always be dicks?

A quick correction: Paul Giamatti's character doesn't own the Rock's boat. He loaned him money to fix the engine under the pretense/contract that if the Rock wasn't able to pay him back on time he'd be allowed to take the engine, putting the Rock out of business and thereby gaining a monopoly on the river safari tours.

Jungle Cruise is the very definition of making something out of nothing. It might be the most basic of plots, but when you have people who know exactly what the hell they are doing and execute it the way they do, there can certainly be some unexpected magic that comes from it. Might not be the best, but definitely falls in a place of silly enjoyment.

  • @ThePa1riot

I don’t know, I actually really loved this movie. For one thing I was surprised about how violent it got. Like the scene when Aguirre basically eats Joachim’s face.
Secondly, I can’t get enough of the flashback where Frank reveals who he is. Seeing Aguirre go all Wrath of God, mad pursuit of a legend while his men drop around him, feels much more emotional when they establish that this version did it for his dying daughter. All the while, a haunting cover of “Nothing Else Matters” plays. The song fits what’s going on in the scene, especially as it ramps up when Aguirre finally goes nuts and the curse is actually inflicted.
To cap it off, the way Aguirre and his men are trapped is up there with I Have no Mouth and I must Scream. Caught in a hole, unable to climb out to the river, but the curse can’t pull them through the earth. And this was inflicted on them, BY THE HERO!
    Just, God, love this movie.

In the Herzog film, he was already ambitious and willing to murder before things got really bad. In this one, his mad pursuit of a legend is because he believes it's the only thing that will save his daughter, so no matter who has to die, he won't stop. Nothing else matters.

Gotta give credit to whoever decided to have Dwayne wear the exact same style hat that Bogart did in The African Queen. May be a goofy comedy movie but that still shows respect for the original inspiration

The rock and Emily blunt are part of that group of actors who can do no wrong.
They’re just so charming, so talented, so likable they even if they are in a bad movie, THEY are at least good.

Found the movie standard at best but I did love the scenes between Dwayne Johnson and Blunt, they were just charming when they were on screen together. That said I do also admit to liking the villains, they were just so over the top I couldn’t help but find them charming

Also, funniest line in the movie was when Blunt's character mentioned how she thought the world looked better outside of a camera while we see it's green screen. It reminds me of Thor Ragnarok when Odin said the same thing about the sea sight being beautiful before the next shot reminds us it's a green screen again. It comes off as a little tone def, ha ha.

My biggest problem with this film is that it overstays its welcome. This has been a trend in 2020/2021 where everything is being driven to home streaming. Since they know you will not be sitting through trailers and will be in your home, watching at your leisure, they continue to pad the runtime well beyond what it should be. Making a kids / family film 2+ hours is only considered acceptable because it is being watched at home but that does not mean it is a better film. I am all for longer films when that length makes sense such as Braveheart, Lawrence of Arabia, Dune 2021, etc. This is not that type of film.

I feel like Doug has changed a bit. And I like it. More than before I hear him saying “that’s not what ppl came to see this movie for.” Recognizing that a stupid kids movie is just a stupid kids movie and that’s ok. 🤣 Accepting the movie for what it is and not what you want it to be. I love it!!!

i'll admit, when i saw the trailer(s), i thought this movie was either gonna be an ok but underwhelming movie or a mostly miss or disaster of a project adapted from a disney ride.
i went to see it in theaters when my mom wanted to watch another movie around that weekend and tells me if i should see this film or not and so i chose to see it.
when i sat on my seat, i was thinking "man, this movie's gonna be underwhelming and a waste of a few bucks."
but eventually, it warmed up to me. i had fun with this film. the directing, the editing, the acting, the setups, one or two creative bits and i got a few decent laughs out of it. while the climax, i think, is ok-ish (not great but not bad either), it didn't ruin the experience for me.
this is one of the most enjoyable disney live-action films i've seen.
not sure if it's for everyone, but it's worth either a mildly decent distraction or a majorly good time (worth rewatching once in a while?).
    (at least) have some fun!

I just saw this movie on Disney+, and I honestly just expected it to be serviceable, which it was. I agree with everything Doug says, I honestly had a few of the same thoughts when I watched it. It's an okay movie, but it felt like it was the wrong story for this "movie based on a ride" movie.
One thing I did like was Jack Whitehall's MacGregor - I loved this character and his story, and Jack just made him really fun and worth to watch.

  • @JustAnotherPerson4U

I know he's not really trained as an actor and isn't really the best but I'm wondering when Doug will comment of Jack Whitehall's performance, especially since he's appeared in a few things now. Especially considering how much of a well-known (I hesitate to say famous as I'm not sure what would make one qualify) British comedian he is who famously made jokes about the actor who played edward cullen from twilight.

Not having watched this, it looks like the safe, unchallenging dad movie. You know the kind of movie that makes you go "eh. This is like 10000 movies I've already seen before. Pass." But your dad just want to switch off his brain and goes "Wow, that was great!"
Either way, for my playlist of all DisneyCember reviews in chronological order, this movie was released on July 30, 2021, so between Black Widow (July 9) and Free Guy (August 13).
I still don't get why are these reviewed in random order but whatever. It's fun to mix things up.

I'll give this film some credit: it does feel like there was a sense of passion and interest involved compared to "Red Notice" from this same year with Dwayne which feels purely like they were talking what was popular, giving it deadpool's C-material, putting it in a blender and green screen and calling it a day hoping they can make an overly expensive franchise out of it and nothing more. Also, I don't think the Edgar Wright comparison is apt here. I'd say a better comparison for a kid friendly Edgar Wright would be "The Kid who Would Be King". That fittingly has more of that sense of style to it.

I found Emily Blunt's character to be another one of those "women who don't follow social norms" kind of character. Not bad just very, "Disney". The happy ending also felt forced like "Oh no! All the petals are gone" but then the moon is like "Nah. You guys are the main characters and this is a Disney film. I'll just come back and give you another petal". What do they call it? A "Deus Ex Machina"?

Disneycember 2021 verdict tracker Day 20:
Good: KH, TCW (series), Encanto, Free Guy, KH2, DuckTales reboot, West Side Story, Luca, Mighty Joe Young, Spider-Man: No Way Home, KH3, Raya and the Last Dragon, Jungle Cruise
Okay/Meh: Black Widow, Cruella, WandaVision, Shang-Chi
Bad: Home Sweet Home Alone, Underdog, The Clone Wars movie
Considering how enthusiastic Doug seems, I'm gonna label the film as having a verdict of being good.
