When Jack was explaining how Barbossa and Blackbeard should just fight each other while the rest set back Blackbeard was thinking to himself that maybe it wasn't a bad idea

I think the biggest flaw in general with this movie is one from behind the scenes of the production itself: Rob Marshall. It's pretty clear he was only brought in because Gore Verbinski chose not to come back to direct, and why would he? He churned out three brilliant films for Disney which, IMHO, are far more under appreciated and intelligent than most people realize, and so when that story was finished, Verbinski had enough integrity to not come back just for another paycheck. But of course, Disney being Disney, they had no self-restraint and lacked the integrity to just say "no" to another project. So they brought in a new guy who was probably given a mandate about certain things that *had* to be in the film (mermaids, the fountain, more Spanish presence, a new famous pirate boss, etc) and he had to come up with a script with his team based on those things despite not having had any involvement with the franchise at all. It's clear that Marshall looked at the original trilogy and saw some of the things that worked well, but he didn't understand *why* they worked well. So in trying to emulate those various factors, he basically directed a film that looked similar enough visually to the previous material but had almost none of the substance behind it. It felt boring and lackluster as a result, despite somehow being even more expensive than film 3 (which I still don't understand how that happened, BTW). If Disney had instead plucked someone from the previous production team to direct in place of Verbinski, someone who understood the lore and world building already, I think both films 4 and 5 would have worked substantially better.

Precisely. Even on the production film of the second and third film the writers admitted that they didn't even know half the time what they had/hadn't even wrote a scene they were working on that day. It's clear that the trilogy is what it was meant to be.

9:12 tha's actually historically accurrate, the Queen Ann's Revenge became a very recognisable ship because of the infamey Blackbeard had. In fact Blackbeard once planned to sack a town with all his men but the very sight of his ship caused a riot that pretty much did all the work for him

    • @TheSEAempire
      @TheSEAempire  ปีที่แล้ว +5

I just think it’s odd how he would intentionally place the name on the ship. Like I get if the image of the ship became a symbol of terror, but at the very least it would be possible to make port, and if not, at the very least it would be easy to visit a free port. In the POTC universe, this is loooong after the Golden Age ended. There wouldn’t be many free ports left, so you’d think he’d want to be as incognito as possible, no?

    • @orcbuster7060

I always saw the end of the third film as a depiction of alternate history where Pirates were never wiped out and won a revolutionary war against the British empire. And as much as I like Ian Mcshane as an actor I never liked the inclusion of Blackbeard into this world.
The first three pirate movies NEVER relied on actual historical pirates it instead used them as inspiration for their own fictional ones. Like speaking of Blackbeard, Jacoby who is the pirate from Curse of the Black Pearl with the bombs and the SMOKING BEARD! is clearly based on Blackbeard. Elizabeth Swann is also probably inspired by someone like Anne Bonny and Mary Read and Barbossa's name is taken from Barbarossa ''Redbeard''.
Pintel and Ragetti mention Morgan and Bartholomew as the writers of the Pirate Code as a nice little reference. All the pirate lords are fictional but their flags we see during hoist the colors are all from real pirates, the flag of the Black Pearl is taken from Calico Jack Rackham and if you pay attention you can see that Captain Teague flies what in reality was Blackbeard's flag!
But no HISTORICAL Pirate ever showed up in the trilogy and I would think that if Blackbeard did exist in this universe he would probably be part of the Brethren Court. I get the sense that the historical pirates were almost legends to our fictional characters like their time has long passed. Historically inaccurate but this entire Universe is clearly supposed to be FICTIONAL!

So heres the thing for me: On Stranger Tides the book is cool as hell. It had all the hallmarks of a classic fantasy adventure novel, including a protagonist that grows, mythical encoutners such as Mermaids and zombis, sword fights and a race against time plot that made for an interesting read. And the movie has this stuff. The biggest problem is how they incorporate the original characters, forcing them into roles that were filled by someone else in the book or not their in all.
Not saying you can't, Pirates clearly borrows a lot from other pirate stories and legends already, and I would be happy to see that expand. But for this movie, it should have been called On Stranger Tides: A Pirates of The Caribean Story. Tell the story the book has, maybe have a few cameos and refrences to the other movies, but have it as a stand alone movie that takes place in this universe.

I haven't watched the film too recently, so I could be wrong, but I thought one purpose of that four-minute cliff scene was to explore Blackbeard's relationship with his daughter. Wasn't there something to do with him not wanting her to die, or maybe him being willing for her to die? Or vice versa? I'd have to watch it again to remember.
About Barbossa becoming a privateer, it's probably a matter of resources and willingness to fight. We saw in At World's End how hard it was to get the Pirate Brethren to fight together for anything, even their very survival. Maybe he did approach the Brethren asking for help, but nobody wanted to risk their own crews to go after Blackbeard. Anyway, putting aside the logistics of how the British Navy accepted a pirate lord into their ranks (maybe that's explained in the film? I don't remember), since he was so dead set on killing Blackbeard, he knew that being that high in the Navy would grant him practically unlimited resources at his disposal, compared to the motley Pirate Brethren who would just as soon betray him if they felt it more profitable. As for whether he would be willing to join with his hated enemies from before, I don't think Barbossa is a stranger to playing the long game. I can see him infiltrating the ranks just to use them and then discard them once he saw a good opportunity.
Excellent video though, especially for such a seemingly small channel. I hope the TH-cam algorithm smiles upon you!

You’re right about the cliff scene: it showed how little Black Beard cares for his daughter. He’s fine with her jumping. He plays Russian Roulette with her. She’s convinced the whole time that he won’t let her die, but he even shrugs off that idea when she presents it to him. He’s a cruel man who cares for nothing. However, that information is shown throughout the film. He put her in danger or she does something dangerous and he never stops her or shows any regard for her at all.

Honestly, I would've liked this a lot more if they had kept Keith Richard's Captain Teague in the movie. Do a sort've The Last Crusade adventure with Jack and his father. That sounds like a much better dynamic than Angelica and Blackbeard. We already know Blackbeard doesn't give a s-t about his daughter, willing to sacrifice her life for immortality, and Angelica will never be seen again despite the romance she and Jack have. I always felt they did the Depp/Cruz team up because Dreamworks did the similar team up of Banderas/Hayek in Puss in Boots, which came out the same year. On Stranger Tides may have come out before Puss in Boots in 2011, but Puss in Boots's production started before On Stranger Tides, meaning Pirates ripped off the idea of said team up.

My issue with the zombies is that they are a huge downgrade of creativity following in the footsteps of the Skeleton Crew and the Fish Men Crew. Each member of those crews had unique designs and features all over them, and all of them were cartoonishly grim and demented and over-the-top weird, you can't take your eyes off how strange these freaks looked. The zombies just look like some dudes in cheap-ass halloween make-up slapped on last minute.
Say what you will about Pirates 5, but the Ghost Spanish Navymen in that film are one of its saving graces because of how cool and creative their appearances are, complimented further by Javier Bardem's badass performance.

Also it's only mentioned once but the lore or legend in the film is the kiss of a mermaid stops you from drowning. So when Phillip asked for freedom she kissed him and it is assumed she kept her promise and the kiss actually does work. Of course the love hat no reason to be there but it was so it sorta makes sense.

One problem, that can't easily be solved by writing, is the fact certain actors and actresses needed for a potential sequel aren't avaliable.
Without the cast members from world's end, your limited in what you can do for a sequel as without the actors and actresses, especially those for Will and Elizabeth, the story you can tell now has to focus on solely those you have avaliable at hand including Jack, Barbossa, and Mr. Gibbs.

The reason why Phillip survived the slash to the neck was because it was a bluff and he was shot or stabbed with a sedative dart instead. He did seem to have a bit of a wound there too which was a little weird but if you look closely you can see the red fletching of the dart when he wakes up and checks his torso.

I still like On Stranger Tides especially when I seen in theaters back in 2011 and yes it had good performances and Ian McShane as blackbeard was awesome as if he was made for the role however I did and still do find this movie has some illogical questions like why didn't jack ask her how blackbeard was able to put the ships into the bottles and how to get them out?

One thing, I am noticing, many people say: "If X is bulletproof, how does Y damages it"? Well in case of this movie: the chalices were not broke, they were dented -- hi, yes, this is physics 5 to 6th grade calling; application of force through different methods. Again if we are going by images of this movie: when chalices were shot, they were HELD by HANDS, SUSPENDED in the AIR (so to say), but when dented they were SECURED by GROUND and the FORCE were DISTRIBUTED from TOP. You can surely do a 5th grade physics equation to understand how they were fine in the first case, but were damaged in other.
If you want to test it in real life, try hitting a piece of wood suspended in the air by for example some rope, but then hit that piece of wood by securing it on a firm ground (or rock, or asphalt). Hit it with an axe.

I think the movie needed to step away, for once, on a cursed crew. Redbeard is the most iconic pirate, they needed to show him just annihilate other ships, the ship itself didn't need to also be cursed.

What disappoints me in this film is that in the trilogy before the world building was amazing you really felt the world was lived in but in this one and the one after you feel like that has been drasticaly toned down and they barely connect to what came before, jack didnt seem to have a goal in this movies and literally got kidnapped and forced to be in the narrative, blackbeards motivations are bizarre he will be killed by a one legged man so he needs the fountain to avoid that ? Im assuming if youre younger youre not gonna be immune to being stabbed by a one legged man or by any man with a sword for that matter.
And it just feels like blackbeard came out of nowhere, like where was he in the 3rd movie since he is this big pirate that all pirates fear ? If he was this big player i would assume he wouldve played a role in the big battle that decided the fate of all pirates in the 3rd movie.
They couldve made a cool connection to davey jones to explain that absence,
What if blackbeard was a big pirate years ago that commanded the seas with everyone fearing him for years and his big army of pirates owing all of that to a deal he made with davey jones just like jack did for his black pearl, but unlike jack when it was time to pay up blackbeard runs away to land giving up his pirating ways forever afraid of davey jones and never going back to the sea so he wont face him, showing the parallels between him and jack where one faced there fear and defeated the devil while the other ran away like a coward and like what jack wouldve become if he did succumb to his own fears like he almost did.
Fast forward a few decades later a year after davey jones is dead and theres a vacuum in power that needs to be filled, with blackbeards only reason thats keeping him away from the sea having died he can finaly come back and rebuild his army that he once had to take over the seas again, but after decades of waiting the man has become to old and needs to recover the years that he has lost and thats why he goes for the fountain of youth. You can split this story into 2 movies even with the first ending with blackbeard recovering his youth and the second one having him want to be the pirate king, since before when there was no king he needed the court to vote him in which wouldve never happened but now that there is a king they can add a rule in the narrative that a new king can be crowned after killing the old one paving the way for elizabeth to reenter the narrative and will to come back to protect his wife in the 5th movie and the bretheren court returning not wanting to serve under a tyranical rule of horrors under blackbeard like the years prior where he ruled the seas, with the climax of the 5th movie being between blackbeards rebuilt army vs the bretheren court and all their army under king elizabeth all while jack is jumping around from side to side manipulating the whole situation so he can get back his black pearl as well as come to terms with the immortality that he always was looking for

It felt like a filler episode in one of those anime, you know the ones, the episodes ones where the filler is completely disconnected from the main story-line, introduces a bunch of boring one-note characters who manifest out of thin air only to vanish and never be addressed ever again once the episode is over and the entire events of said episode get practically ignored.

What I will not allow is PotC 5. Alr I perfectly understand your grievances with this movie being really disjointed and stupid decisions were made by the characters but
    1. Jack is wishy washy with Angelica because he still actually loves her but doesn’t express stuff like that
2.the British don’t seem all powerful anywhere else but London which duh as seen with the Spanish mobilizing a fleet while the British send a sing ship
    4. Jack would be executed since they knew by barbossa that he had a map
    5. What else did Barbossa have other than the pearl
6.jack and Angelica duel was to show how well she knew jack and how similar they are
    7. The water takes the years that you’ve lived and would have lived and gives it to the other
    8. Blackbeard or anyone in his crew could’ve seen Gibbs later and tried to kill him
    9. Jack could’ve been used for years so that’s why he wasn’t killed and he cares more about killing barbossa than killing jack
    10. Angelica just really wants a parental figure and is pretty much willing to do anything to keep that fake relationship
    11. Angelica has all those years from the fountain and Jack says that it’s a common trade route and will be rescued
    12. This movie was supposed to make jack change his mind on immortality which wasn’t told well
This movie is a good fun side story that doesn’t connect too much to the original trilogy and everything else you’ve said makes total sense and I just wanted to clear things up a bit. The 5th film doesn’t exist in my eyes either.

This is by far my least favorite POTC film. Not at all a fan of this portrayal of Blackbeard. Jack was not originally written to be a protagonist, so I find it hard to root for him like one. The plot line with Penelope Cruz seemed incredibly forced. I also find it funny that, the only canon that Pirates 5 carries over from #4, is The Black Pearl stuck in a bottle. Not even the franchise itself wants to acknowledge that movie 😂
