I watched this in the theater and i cried when Barbossa sacrificed himself for his daughter. For me he had the most character development ( from villain to ally to hero ) Geoffrey Rush absolutely crushed this role ❤
Also fun fact Jack's uncle is played by Paul McCartney from the Beatles
I cried too, and even got a little choked up at that scene still today.
A pirates life
My fiancée did the same 😂
Paul McCartney was in a band before "Wings"? (There's a 40-year-old joke for ya.)
@@creech54 Paul McCartney was that guy from the 80s, right? (There's a 50-year-old one hah)
11:11 "You know what? For somebody who's constantly intoxicated, he has _amazing_ balance."
He's not "constantly intoxicated." You're referring to the way he _walks._ Observe that he walks like that when he's on _land._ On the deck of a ship, out at sea, he's _absolutely_ steady. He's a natural pirate; a man with no _land_ legs.
I was today years old when I learned this. I'll have to pay attention on rewatches.
While this is most definitely right, he also walks like that cause Johnny is probably doing lines of coke between takes, let's be real xD
@@StonerWeeb Hey, if it works, it works.
While that's true, to be fair he is still practically constantly intoxicated.
"Now that's pretty thick wood"
Yep. That's what she said.
I love that Paul McCartney wanted to be in the movie and played Jacks Uncle, just like Keith Richards (Rolling Stones) played his dad
They should have found a role for Roger Daltrey to complete the Three Icons of the British Invasion trifecta (Rolling Stones, Beatles, The Who)
@@kevinramsey417 maybe his uncle from marrage. his mom's brother.

'Pirates, they do be like that' sounds like something you would see on a t-shirt. 😆
Arr!
Barbosa did say he couldn't live with his daughter knowing he's a pirate...
😂No Henry, only Zool!😂😂

The witch got the compass from the barkeeper via the rats.
That Captain Hector Barbossa character development is why he is my favorite character of the whole franchise, thank god they brought him back after his death in the first movie and give him a proper ending, as a good man.
@2:00 One of the earliest known lighthouses was the Lighthouse of Alexandria (Egypt) built sometime between 280 and 247 BCE
We actually met Sparrow's dad in the third one. He was the keeper of the Pirate Codex book.
And Ashley 'met' him again in the fourth and was all excited. 😂
Fun fact! Jacks uncle is played by Paul Freaking McCartney!
The joke is that his entire family is made up of aging rock stars.
@@Pink.andahalf well Johnny Depp did star in a rock music video for Tom Petty
@@DragnmastralexHe also tours with his own rock band ("The Hollywood Vampires") featuring whatever A-List rock gods are available at the time. The majority of the videos I've seen have Alice Cooper on lead vocals but there have been many superstars attached.
I love Paul McCartney! My grandmother and I would jam out and sing a long to a cassette tape of his called All the Best on road trips back in the late 80s and early 90s.
I think it's been a fantastic series especially when you consider the fact that it's all based off of a ride at Disneyland they were able to come up with an incredible amount of depth and detail about characters based off of Just that makes it amazing.
The witch got the compass because she is a real witch, and witches do witchy things😛
fans theorize that it was calypso posing as the witch. remember she was freed of her human bonds in the world's end movie.
She could have just… bought it…
Fun fact: pirates did have insurance. When you got to work as a pirate you would sign a contract that says how much you get, your duties, rights and, in case of missing eye, hand, leg, others, how much money you'd get for it.
To pirates treasure is everything. So when she asked who she is to him and he said "treasure" that hit hard.
As Captain Jack said in Curse of the Black Pearl: "Not all treasures are silver, gold, & jewels, Mate"
"Unconventional but works"... that's pretty much the most conventional thing Jack did across all of the movies :)
It doesn't get much more traditional than whacking something with a stick. lol
Known as "Salazar's Revenge" here in the UK
17:21 "That... It was a _plan._ And there was an _attempt made."_
And it looks like _fun, too._ 🤷♂
When I hear “Hi yes hello and wel….” I’m instantly in a good mood 🙂. Happy weekend everybody!
Jack’s uncle is Paul McCartney. Johnny Depp thought it would be funny to have Keith Richard’s as his dad, & Paul McCartney as his uncle. Rolling Stones & Beatles. I love it!💕
Of all the Pirates movies I REALLY take issue with this one. This movie shows what happens when writers and directors try to write a sequel WITHOUT having seen the previous movies. IF the writers; director and producers had seen the original trilogy they'd have KNOWN that this movie's entire main plot is BULLSHIT. If anyone was actually paying Attention to the end of "At World's End" they'd KNOW that Will IS NOT CURSED. He never was. The fact that his crew turned BACK into humans is the very proof. It's not a matter of them turning into monsters over time; no. THAT was because Davy Jones HIMSELF corrupted the purpose of the Flying Dutchman. HE was the reason the ship was crewed by Monsters. Once Will became captain The Flying Dutchman had it's original purpose back. More importantly Will would have been a less mean and violent Captain. He would certainly have released any soul who wanted to be at rest. so this whole thing about him not being able to control his crew is bullshit. HE'S the captain. the ship answers to HIM. The crew CAN'T take over because Will is BOUND to the ship. the fact that he's still there is all th e proof you need. So to show that Will is suffering the same curse as Davy Jones is utter nonsense. Will isn't the type of person to start slacking on his duty to the dead. He says so himself in At World's End " You have to do the job though Jack. Or end up like Jones." Meaning that IF you do the job you are just fine and are not corrupted.
The other major issue is with Jack's compass.n Tia Dalma (Calypso) says vert specifically that Jack GOT the compass FROM HER. When he shows up asking about the key, she looks at him and says - and I quote - "The compass you barter from me, cannot lead you to this??" When Jack says "Maybe.." She says "Uhhhh, jack sparrow does not KNOW what he wants." But those are the key words. "Barter FROM me" Meaning SHE had it and traded it TO Jack. He didn't get it from his former Captain.
Yes. Exactly this. Ridiculous and lazy ret-conning to drive a plot. Sad thing is, they could just have changed a few details and the plot would have worked without the ret-conning.
Yeah, if they didn't do those changes, it could've been better continuity wise. Unfortunately, this happens a lot as "let's throw them a curveball." How about no and stick to the lore.
You nailed it I’m pretty sure the whole Amber heard drama had to do with Disney not giving a shit as well if I’m not mistaken, this movie was released right about the time their drama was happening
And this is only a start - there are several other issues.
@@Touton701Are you honestly insinuating that Disney were the ones responsible for the whole Amber Heard drama? That was all because that woman was absolutely batshit crazy.
The two Captains that tell Barbosa about 'Captain Salamander'? Those are the two bumbling soldiers that were guarding Davy Jones' chest. They became pirates.
Ashleigh, MAJOR points on your movie quoting skills! You GO girl!
i didn't know there was an end-credit scene! i'm so glad you showed it!!!
Now that you’ve seen Paul McCartney in this, it only makes sense to see his big screen debut from 1964, ‘A Hard Day’s Night’, starring a little indie band that probably made it big at some point.
I know this movie isn’t the best received but I won’t lie in saying this film is one of my favorites and it’s cause I was able to see this movie with my mom and brother who are big pirates fans and barbossa thank goodness has the best character arc and it made me cry in theaters, no matter how crazy this franchise has gotten it’ll always hold a place in my heart
It’s funny you say about pirates not having the best insurance, when one of my favorite but of piratical trivia is that pirate crews actually did have a sort of insurance in the form of compensation for injuries. Part of the prevoyage agreement involved setting prices for various levels of injury, to the point that some crews would even make efforts to deliver your share of the loot to a next of kin should your voyage come to a permanent end
Who would have thought that Will and Elizabeth's son would end up with Barbosa's daughter 😂
Ashley, about the sleeve tearing... "Cashiering" is a degredation method that the military uses to show that you highly fucked up, they would rip your sleeves, slap off your hat, tear off your insignia, etc. It was usually a public ceremony with drum beats and all the bells and whistles. Basically letting everyone know of your dishonor.
That "ritual" was used as the premise and the opening title sequence for a 1960s TV western titled "Branded" starring Chuck Conners. At least, that's what popped into MY head when I saw that sequence. (Shows my age.)
@@Redfern42 my intro to Chck Connors was Wolf. I'm 44, that was in the late '80's, I believe. My grandma loved her some Chuck, BUT her main man was Lorenzo Lamas in Renegade lol.
One of the things that makes the LEAST sense about the compass is that Tia Dalma/Calypso said that Jack bartered the compass from HER! I don’t like that retcon.
31:50 another method of navigation would be "dead reckoning". You need to know where you start, then keep track of how long you travel which course how fast. Two movie-scenes come to mind:
In "Master and Commander" (highly recommended) there is a scene where they measure their speed with a hand-log. It's an actual log that has a line with knots attached. The log is thrown overboard and acts as little sea-anchor staying put, while the line is running off a spool. A sand-timer is used to measure a defined time-span and the number of knots running through in that time is counted. The distance of the knots on the line and the run-time of the sand-timer are arranged such that the amount on knots running through corresponds to nautical miles per hour traveled. We had more sophisticated equipment for quite some time now, but nautical miles per hour are still usually referred to as "knots".
In "Das Boot" (likewise highly recommended) the captain gets a bit grumpy with the navigator when the latter is not too sure about the correctness of their position after two weeks of heavy weather. Because of course, a compass tells you which direction your bow is pointing, but not how far the ship drifts sideways.
I like to imagine that Javier Bardem shouted to Jack "Your name is Jack Sparrow now!" right before they got cursed. Only way it would make sense that they're the ones who nicknamed him that.
42:55 just say what me and Jack always say the second he's on screen : "HECTOR!"
Is the long-haired ship zombie the same guy who was the Crazy Coin Flipper in 'No Country For Old Men'?
Yep. Javier Bardem.
14:43 "He looks like a skinny version 😄 of the Cowardly Lion."
🦁Ain't it the truth? 🤷♂
Swear I’ve ALWAYS thought that as well! Hilarious!!
14:31 - THEY'VE BEEN SUNK BY A CAPTAIN CALLED...
GUARD 1: Salamander GUARD 2: Samovar ASHLEIGH: Sullivan BARBOSSA: Salazar ASHLEIGH: That one. There ya go. (laughter)
Biggest problem with pissing of Poseidon is he's also the god of earthquakes.
(And horses, which is even odder.)
Heard a theory, that the real Troy/Illium fell because of an earthquake. That would justify a horse statue.😮
@@zvimur horse's, in Greek mythology, were gifts to men from posiedon. He basically turned sea horses into land horses
The Greek gods diversified. Athena was a goddess of wisdom, craftwork and war.
@@kevinramsey417 well, mankind's shortcuts in technology were, often, connected to the military.
Nuclear bomb predated the nuclear reactor (the one that doesn't explode).
Eartyhquakes make sense as well. Undersea tremors create tsunamis, and before the Greeks created Hades, he was also God of Death/The Underworld.
Hey, Ashleigh! You know the part you were freaking out about Henry untying his ankles?? Well guess what?!? During the part you were all: "You don't be back-talking your daddy!", *_WILL CUT THE ROPE AROUND HENRY'S ANKLES!!!_*
I really like this one, I enjoy all of the movies except the 4th one lol. I LOVE the ending, Will and Elizabeth are my favorite couple ever and their love story is so beautiful. I also like Henry and Carina together, they cast Henry perfectly for being Will and Elizabeth’s son. I quote this movie a decent amount also, I like to say “SHE NEEDS THE SEA!” and “Jack Sparrrrow” like how Salazar says it. I also love Barbossa’s story with Carina but I hate that he died, it makes me cry every time when she says “what am I to you?” and he says “treasure” 🥺😭 A lot of people think it should have ended at a trilogy but I’m glad they made this movie. I think it’s a beautiful send-off ❤
This movie made me want to educate Captain Jack, that there is a distinct difference between "robbing the bank" and ' *_stealing_* the bank' 🤔.
It’s possible that Poseidon doesn’t even exist in the potc universe. They already have their own goddess of the sea, Calypso. Maybe it was her trident all along.
When it comes to Mythologies its understood that all the pantheons exist at the same time on their own plane, like for example Mt Olympus is above Athens but it doesn't exist in the same plane as the Roman or Norse Pantheon.
The Midgard from Norse Mythology which is "Earth" is not the same Earth as the one where Athens exists today for the Greeks etc.
Sure, its just a movie and the PoTR has its own lore, if Calypso would be part of the Carribean pantheon if they developed the lore further.
But Poesidon and Njord, the Norse God of the sea both exist simultaneously.
When they discover the sea-floor spot with the trident, they call it Poseidon's tomb. So Poseidon was a big deal back in the day, he had this trident. But when Poseidon died, he left his trident at his grave. So he doesn't exist- *anymore*, but he used to. He was alive, but now he's dead. Even gods gotta go some time.
@@deetsitmeisterjd They never really quite get into all that in these films. The Kraken is a creature from Scandinavian Mythology, originally. For some reason it was featured in 1981's "Clash of the Titans" (and again in 2010, with Liam Neeson) which is supposed to be about Greek Mythology- which has fooled many people into believing that it is from the Greeks, when it was not. At any rate, it's a part of popular notions about sea creatures, so it makes sense. "Jormungand" is also from Norse myth, and is a serpent who lives in the sea. "The Leviathan" is a sea monster from the Bible. There are many sea monsters the writers could have chosen from.
The "Pirates..." films don't really seem to get into any existential questions of which gods and monsters and mythologies and superstitions and religions exist for real; it's whatever the script-writers want to tell a story about, then that's a real thing.
The character of Tia Dalma is a priestess of Caribbean voodoo; an obeah priestess. Apparently that is her human guise; she is really Calypso- who in this reality is a sea goddess. The Calypso of Greek mythology was not a sea goddess who ruled the waves, she was a demi-goddess who lived on an island and kept Odysseus as her lover for a period of years, until he left.
So the writers of these films have taken several disparate pieces of sea-based lore, mixed it in with their own brand of humor, adventure, and story-telling, and come up with some fun film stories to watch.
-My 2¢
"Y'all haven't aged a day!" Well, that was the curse. While you served the Dutchman, you and the one you promised to doesn't age. Can't say it's not a fair curse!
16:46 not only did they gather to watch, it wasn’t that long ago. The last execution by guillotine was September 10, 1977.
@20:03.. Sounds like a nod to decorations for In 'n Out - which, in turn, is a nod to "the Big W" location of the treasure in the movie "Its a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World"
That's what I thought, though my mind immediately went to "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" with no middleman.
Enjoyed this one!!! Keep em coming. Thank you!!
17:44 It wouldn't be a POTC movie if there weren't at least _one_ highly improbable fight sequence.
Better than 4 but not quite as good as 1-3, still awesome to watch
Fun fact, Jack's uncle was played by Paul McCartney.
Yall remember how we hard core pirates fans had to wait YEARS to find out what happen to Elizabeth and Will….
I couldn't stop laughing at jacks lines about the French and the guillotine. Fun fact the last person executed by the guillotine was in 1977 the same year star wars opened in theaters
I wonder if the condemned saw the movie before they died...
Lighthouses have been around for more than 3 thousand years. The Pharos in Alexandria was one of the 7 ancient wonders of the world.
Reba! I'm loving the new hair styles the last few reactions 😊
It's not that we want Disney to make another one. It's that we only want a 6th one if Johnny Depp is back as Captain Jack Sparrow.
Fun theory, the guy in the Prison who laughs after Jacks uncle tells the Joke is Barbosa.
21:39 That is Kaya Scodelario. Before and after she did this movie, she starred in a trilogy of films based on the James Dashner novels called "The Maze Runner." Her character's name was Teresa. I highly recommend you watch the maze runner trilogy at some point on the channel Ashleigh. The films are as follows:
The Maze Runner (2014)
The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015)
The Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018)
Ha. She thinks the voodoo doll will come into play.
"Back in the day, I'd have nothing to worry..."
Ummm...
Who tells her what, according to folklore, was a tell-tale sign of witches...?
You'll recall that Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones played Jack's father, Captain Teague, in previous films. He was interested in appearing in this one as well, but was unavailable. At that point, Depp approached Sir Paul McCartney of the Beatles, who then played his paternal Uncle Jack. And that made McCartney and Richards brothers.
The girl (Kaya Scodelario) is in the Maze Runner movies, which I think you might enjoy 😊
Happy Early Birthday Ashleigh!
A bird crapped on my shoe today. Maybe I should buy a lottery ticket 😃
It's been 6 months.
How are the Ferraris?! 😂
Jack never said he loved Angelica... (she said "I love you, Jack" to which he replied "so do I" (or something similar) - clearly meaning he also loved Jack) And Barbosa has been dead before... two truths that don't need to lead to yet another thing...
I forgot this one even existed. Never saw it.
I popped into Disney+ to watch just I could see Ashleigh's reactions without "spoilers".
Just because Barbados died doesn’t mean that he won’t be back in the next movie. He has died before
I love how she gaslighted herself into thinking thay the "cgi" of you jack is bad when its literrally an actor 💀
When the live action little mermaid came out I said i was happy to see Captain Salazar finally got the trident of Poseidon since it's the same actor.
"Oh my God bless Americaaaa..." That one got me cryin 😂
I love your reactions when you see some absolutely impossible way someone escapes or survives and you're all like "Huh!" like you are making a mental note. Ashleigh could find herself on a pirate ship, who knows? Good to keep notes. LOL. Just in case.
It's amazing to see that seamen, people who are used to navigate by maps and stars across oceans, cannot read a starmap...
Some might be surprised, but pirates did in fact have a pretty good insurance policy, for the time
No new movie will be made with the same cast.
As Johnny Sepp said in court: "I will never work with Disney again.".
Disney had put him on hold before the Heard vs. Depp.
Johnny did not like that.
Hi Ashleigh, So happy to see your reaction to this movie I've seen this movie in theaters 2 times and Now see your reaction is the best to it !!☠⚔
You also need to think of the timeline , Henry Turner would be the same age as Carina or maybe just older than her , that would mean after episode 3 & before episode 4 , Barbosa met & fathered Carina
Barbosa becomes a privateer for the crown and meets himself a little badge bunny (most likely in Tortuga) and a little 'bow-chika-bow-bow!'...
😂
Jacks line of going beyond the horizon means he is going to go to get Barbosa from where they got Jack. Sorry if someone has already said this.
14:32 - 14:40 reminds me of Dumb and Dumber when they’re trying to remember her last name “Swanson….Samsonite”
_"Samsonite! I was so close!"_
I think they need to go all the way back to the beginning when the first brethern court bound calypso and davy jones gained the dutchman. There is a lot of potential for a good story there.
There are a lot of issues with this movie, but I do appreciate that Will is finally free.
39:45 I got emotional 😭 when, Barbossa sacrificed himself to save his daughter. 41:13 I was happy 😃 to see Elizabeth Turner reunite with Will Turner.
I liked the first one. The second one was doable. The third one was an exercise in patience (I know some people would disagree). The fourth one didn’t hold my interest. Gotta say, this one got me back into the franchise. I love the way the Spaniard says “Jack Essparrrow”.
Javier Bardem is one of my favorite movie bad guys...his performance in No Country for Old Men is chilling. He was also good as the Bond villain Silva in Skyfall.
5 has a great villain, Javier Bardem brings it
@@backtoearth1983he’s just a rip off of Beckett. A military guy who wants to eradicate piracy, who uses a cursed crew and ship to reach his end, and who has a personal vengeance against Jack Sparrow. This is the exact same character.
Also in the 2nd movie they said the island from the 1st movie was claimed by the sea along with all of the treasure
So Barbosa can't recurse and uncurse himself at will?
That would have been my plan for every time it gets hairy. 😂
One thing that irked me about this film: it broke lore. This film shows Jack getting the compass from his first Captain. But it was already established he got the compass from Tia Dalma.
Jack is Bugs Bunny. That’s why he works as a supporting character, not the lead. That was my issue with the fourth. Jack should never be the lead character.
And speaking of Jack, Jack the monkey is no longer undead. Since all curses are broken, Jack the monkey is back to normal.
And in what I’m SURE is just COINCIDENCE, the actor who played Salazar happens to be the real life husband of the actress who played Angelica in the previous film.
The actor who plays Henry, also stars in the 2016 Fantasy Action film "Gods of Egypt" I bet you'd like it a lot.
Odd how Barbossa was on that island long ago....took that one ruby, just to give to his daughter he never planned to see, all just to end up right back on that island...If he was there originally why not take the trident then lol. It's like he had no memory of being there.
30:19 - If I were to cast you into a movie, you would play the president's daughter, dressed in full officer gear, commanding all armies, out for revenge to what happened to her father in Spaceballs III: The Skip Sequel
Jacks dad is played by Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones. Keith Richards is who Johnny Depp based the Captain Jack character on so it was a natural to ask him to play Jacks Dad in episode 3 and 4. And of course, since they had a Stone, they needed a Beatle, so Paul McCartney played his Uncle. (Sir Paul and Johnny Depp are close friends)
Did you know Penelope Cruz who played Angelica , And Javier Bardem actor Who plays Captain SalazarI’ve been married For 14 years
Hey gal! Your opinion on any movie is just as valid as anyone else's. Don't worry too much about what everyone else thinks. It's much more refreshing to listen to someone say exactly how they feel and not just tow the popular lines.
Anyway. I liked this one too. I only wish that they had given us much more of young Turner's story than they did. Just like Will Turner in the very first movie. We never got his back story as a kid and how he ended up on that ship that was burning.
Yeah. In the first movie Jack wasn't the main character of the show, which made his antics a relief. This movie was a bit of a character assassination with him constantly being drunk and unable to speak more than one word sentances. And selling his compass for a drink.
Character assassination or character development?
When it's a series of 5 books it is sometimes called a 'quintet'. I don't know it that applies to movies as well. Trilogy is used for both.
Yes Ashleigh, you are indeed wrong. Isla De Muerta (the cursed Aztec gold treasure) is not the Bermuda Triangle. They aren't even remotely the same.
Umm, they STILL do Ashleigh. They just aren't "public" anymore. But there is still a gathering at executions even today.
It's kind of adorable, Ashleigh's expectation of *some* kind of continuity between these movies. The order is...
1 - ok, that went well, let's make a trilogy
2, 3 - I bet we can get more money
4 - even more money...?
5
And a little math - young Mr Turner is what, 20? I'll allow Jack a bit of immortality (eh, sure), but Mr Gibbs is in excellent shape for being, what, 70+? (I know, why let logic ruin a good time - hehe) 😆👍
Time for some tears, "What dreams may come" staring Robin Williams.
I liked this film and thought it was better than the previous one, though i prefered Jack in 'On Stranger Tides.' He was more of a defeated drunk in this one that got a little old over time 😢😅 wanted more badass moments with him ❤
12:36 😂 Come one Ashleigh, don't be so hard on yourself 🤣
I was ok with this being the last one, until I saw that end credit scene. Aside from Sparrow, Jones is my favorite character from this franchise, so I'd love to see them do at least one more (if they can get Depp back, as unlikely as it seems) with Jones!
