    I am so glad you got pair dogs instead of one by itself.

    it is good you are so gentle and calm with Blue....he is so nervous around people...you can see it. how badly they must have treated him at some point....it makes my heart swells with happiness to see him relax and find some peace and a place to BE. So Many Never Will get that.

    • @ryangrider9607

      MrHanover Smith ultimately he's a working dog, and not a pet. He probably wasn't mistreated. His job is to guard the flock, not run and jump and play ball. As a guard dog he will be very uncomfortable around any animal, including humans, that are too close to his flock.

    • @MrHandoverfist
      @MrHandoverfist 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ryan Grinder...fair enough..But Blue is a 7 year old dog they THOUGHT was ready for working...THAT was NOT HIS Story. so a LGD TRAINED for the JOB...Sure...yep...used to things...BUT THIS IS NOT THAT CASE. DO You KNow What Blue's History is? How many dogs have You Rescued?? Blue is Lucky they are loving and patient...he needed that! Someone that just expected a furry employee for food...BLUE is Not. So My Comments are rather warrented as THIS SPECIFIC Dog did not get 7 years of working training, with decent ppl.

    • @singleman1986
      @singleman1986 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +MrHanover Smith.....ALL well said. Bonding AND trust come before anything else is even possible. As a service dog 'companion', I have learned that BONDING and discipline come FIRST for control. THEN, ease of training. Details and 'nuances' become MUCH easier later.

    • @ryangrider9607
      @ryangrider9607 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MrHanover Smuth, my name is not grinder.

      +Ryan Grider....."ultimately he's a working dog and not a pet". I call
      BS and respectfully beg to disagree, or ask for clarification. That's too narrow a view. So here's mine. ...That's not a frikkin' screwdriver. It's a thinking, intelligent, trainable entity. Dogs are NOT necessarily either 'black or white'. There's a HUGE difference between a "junkyard dog" and a well trained "working dog" that is welcomed on a plane or playground with little kids. Training AFTER bonding is key. FORGET about having ANY 'meaningful' relationship with a dog if you don't bond and build trust first. I've introduced my service dogs to a plane full of people MANY times and INVITED feedback and objections. MY dogs have ALWAYS been accepted as 'just another passenger'. Sure, I have 'em wear a muzzle to eliminate any 'fears', but only I know it isn't necessary. A well trained dog knows damn good and well the difference between 'social contact' and a perceived threat. Ya wanna grin? Imagine waking up at the end of a long flight and seeing a toddler sleeping with an 80lb Rott in the seat next to you.

    Love love love LGDs. I couldn't have asked for a better animal than my pyrenees anatolian mix(+a little great dane!small %)
    She OWNS her field and the sheep have become very aware of her protector role.
    Looked at blending in akbash but have slowed that thought for now.
    You have 2 animals that appear to very comfortable around you and each other. Hope they provide many years of wonderful service.

    Amazing job :) Wow, seeing you take them for the brief walk (an excellent idea taking them for walks - expand it to the boundaries of the property) and the laid back attitude of the dogs struck me...I'm so used to wild dogs who are hard to lead...lol Looks like you got 2 nice mannered dogs there Dan; lovely. :)

    Ya know, as a retired Vet training his 3rd service dog in 21 years, I gotta hand it to ya. In MY personal opinion, yer doing this very well. Considering BOTH of these dogs had trust/bonding issues, I agree, this IS going well. Blue is wagging at 2:22, Willow is wagging at 2:55 & 3:15, and the "hip bump" at 3:55 is a winner. At the risk of anthropomorphizing here, this looked like 2 shy teenagers on their first date....LOL. You got this, man. Stay on this path. JMHO.

    • @TheGrassfedHomestead
      @TheGrassfedHomestead  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      :) Thanks so much for that feedback! I thought the hip bump was awesome, too! Seriously, thank you for sharing your observations.

    • @singleman1986
      @singleman1986 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I wish I was there to help alleviate your concerns. I wouldn't advise you change anything you are already doing, but maybe someone old enough to be your dad could help validate that you are on the correct/CRITICAL path. Bonding, AND the building of trust with a dog is the foundation to EVERYTHING that comes after. When a dog trusts you, the rest of its training is simply repetition and details. Without trust, it is just another mouth to feed. I'll 'retire' my 2nd service dog in about 2 years when her 'replacement' is finished with her training. Don't pay much heed to the "pet" vs "working dog" comments below. A well trained dog can easily be BOTH and KNOWS when it is 'on duty' or when 'socializing'. It is up to YOU to teach it the difference. Best of success.

      Blue sure is looking happy! I only discovered this channel and Blue a few days ago. I KNEW when he picked up Blue that Blue had been traumatized and neglected. Then, saw the next video reporting how hard of a time Blue was having.

    Can't thank you enough for including us all in this process...it's a very special thing. I just know they are already better for you guys loving hearts with them and now they can begin to heal each other's wounds!
    It really amazes me how the most animals just don't like the camera?! There are some that don't care, but especially the LGD's...they don't care for them. I wouldn't hesitate to do most of the interweaving of them off camera, as much as I wish I could observe that. Again, it's a privilege to be able to take a small peek in...thank you! Smiles and blessings...

    It's nice that you're so deliberate about the process. It seems that it's not only prudent, but also considerate--especially with a dog like Blue. I suspect the slow, phased process helps him build trust in you, that you're not going spring something stressful on him. It also looked to me as if Willow was really reading and responding to Blue's demeanor. I suspect she'll be a good fit with him. It's all-around pretty great. :)

    Thanks for this post. I am in process of introducing a 4 month old Komondor female to my (neutered) 3 year old male. It's only been 3 days and I have to keep them separated by a fence right now. The male rolled her the first day to establish his dominance, but did not bite or hurt her. I can't trust them alone together yet. You shared some good ideas 1. the neutral territory 2. they are near each other but not together yet. I hope they become friends in a few weeks :)

  • @kirstenwhitworth8079
    @kirstenwhitworth8079 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I think Blue was uncomfortable being away from his sheep and on leash; he was very tentative.
    Willow was inviting, wagging her tail, but when Blue didn't reciprocate, she became nervous and stepped back. When he wagged his tail, so did she, but she's respecting his space. He is very cautious, while she is very inviting - understandable; she's more socialized than he is. When he finally smelled her tail, she leaned into him. He doesn't understand why he's on lead, and I think he's afraid he'll be taken away from his herd; he relaxed when you shut the front gate - the end of his tail lifted and he let go of his jaw and opened his mouth. Neither put their ears back; there's no animosity, just extreme caution on his part.
    He may think he's expected to breed her. I wonder if he was forced to do so at his old home, or had any bad experiences with the females brought to him.
    I think they will be OK together - they need some bonding time.
    Thanks so much for the video. Best wishes.

      Thanks for that feedback Kirsten. I'm still trying to learn dog behavior interpretation

    • @kirstenwhitworth8079
      @kirstenwhitworth8079 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had a flash of insight which may or may not be accurate. I wonder if Blue is hesitant because he was presented with a long line of females all of whom disappeared? When he first came to your home, he was traumatized, but slowly improved. When he left his pen to meet Willow, he was clearly unhappy - but I think that had more to do with leaving his sheep than being with Willow or you.
      He seems like he's lost so many connections that he's afraid to go through the loss again. Does that make sense?

    They are doing awesome! Both exhibiting very good manners towards each other. I agree with another commenter in that if they are “good” with each other on leash they will be fine off leash. Most dogs feel at least a little defensive on leash so if they are good... they should be fine off leash. The breed by nature is very low key so you should be fine except for an occasional wrestling match that gets a little to rowdy. Nice job!

    Great video, all your videos are great! It brings a tear to my eye to see what you have done with those two dogs. Blue looked like he was in bad shape, as you said, but you did the right thing, in my opinion. I am getting the feeling you are in Idaho...that is one place I am trying to convince my wife to move to so we can have a small farm. I was looking up north in the pan handle area. Switching topics, you have a lot of animals but I was wondering if you keep bees at all?

      @TheGrassfedHomestead  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Stephan. Yes, we are in the panhandle - north Idaho. I am not a beekeeper but we host a beekeeper's hives here over the summer and get to glean some honey as rent :)

    • @Steve-ps6qw
      @Steve-ps6qw 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh wow, some of the people I work with here in Miami keep bees and are willing to help me get started but the yards here are so small and we have four dogs, the smallest being a female Siberian Husky and the largest an American Akita (yes, they are inside the majority of the time due to the heat) so my wife is not on board with that yet. She is onboard with growing stuff but this is a tropical environment and you are limited to things that I have never heard of, lol. Anyway, I had mentioned to her about Coeur d'Alene, ID and showed her some pics. I would like to live there but I understand it is a tourist type area and pricey.

      I know! Blue was a stud dog for 5 years but he was fixed right before we bought him. Willow is also spayed

    Why does blue always seem unhappy? I’m guessing it’s just his character?

      @TheGrassfedHomestead  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      yeah, I think it is just the way he is. He gets really excited when we move the sheep paddocks when they are on pasture in the summer. He jumps around like a pup.

    Can they still make puppies together or were they neutered or spade before they came to live with you?

    You should let Akbash run freely at least at nights, leashing them all the time is no good for them.
