My pyr is a pet but he was a rescue dog also. He is territorial and protective but not aggressive. He is a blessing to me and i am grateful to have him.

Thank you for posting this update on Mojo. My wife was so concerned for him. Now that she/we know his full story it is understandable why he seemed to be lost. I/we think you and your family have filled a void in his life and in a short time he will be King of his areas. This is a learning experience for us. We live in Houston and have always had yard dogs which were mostly pets, but they always did there job of keeping stray cats, squirrels, opossums and raccoons away. I am approaching retirement in a few years and we are considering moving to the country and starting a small farm. We knew there were Guardian Dogs and Herding Dogs, but had not understood the differences until now. Never too old to learn new things. Thank you again and keep up the good work with your channel.

I highly recommend Pyrs for the country, but please read up on them. There are a lot of homesteaders with them posting great videos. A guy who worked reforesting the woods in Canada wrote one the best articles on them. They've been around 3,000 years. He reminds us that natural selection created the breed - back when humans were learning to use dogs to help with flocks, if the dog wasn't good he ended up as dinner. So naturally the best survived. Most breeds we are familiar with are around 200 years old. So the Pyr is pretty unique in the dog world, exceptional guardian, you can read how one found a baby deer and protected it. Tractor Supply has the article of the Pyr who protected his goat flock and 3 baby deer from one of the California wild fires - how did he even know to push them up against a rock, lay on them so the fire would pass over them? He was in pretty bad shape, but all the goats lived. The seller of our dog told us her father helped a new momma goat with cleaning them up so they could nurse. Our dog came from working stock, I think their disposition is better than those bred for show. Expect a very independent dog who needs to know who is in control. And lovable? When we're relaxing in the evening, she will come up alongside us and put her head in our laps... (Nothing like fish breath from that big nose....) And if you truly want a funny story, check out the Ontario Pyr who saved a family from a bear. The mother writes it from a reporter point of view, interviewing each family member - funny, terrifying, but great to know how brave these dogs are.

I cried when y’all lost Bear, and when he passed he knew he was loved. Kevin had to work late and Mojo , Rachel and the children did the late evening chores. He was still new to the homestead and one of the young goats got its horns stuck while trying to reach grass from the other side. Rachel had told the children to stay back as it was getting dark and she was planning to try to help the goat. Mojo was still new and out of the blue he took it upon himself to see what was the problem and when he got there and gave the goat a stern look, the goat quickly untangled itself. I knew then he wanted to protect the family and decided to handle it himself. He’s blessed and they’re blessed. We will miss Bear but I think Bear knows he can RIP. 💞

After observing Mojo right from the time you first got him, I knew he'd be perfect for you. I'd like to suggest that when you feed him, you elevate his food bowl 12-18 in. instead of ground level. to help prevent the intestines from getting twisted as happens to large dogs. (at least, that's what I've heard some vets recommend) I don't know how true that is, but it's easy enough to do and why take chances. Also I found out from my experiences with the great Pyrenees breed, they will fight for anything they think is their possession (bone. food, toy etc.) and they don't quit, causing major injuries (or death) to other dogs or themselves. These guys mean business.
Wishing you peace and happiness for the entire family (humans and animals).

I believe that raising the food is a myth! I wouldn't reccomend it, not allowing exercise for an hour or so after eating is the best prevention for bloat.

Our 2 year old female Pyr growled at our 12 year old Retriever once while eating. The Retriever was very good at letting her eat from her bowl as a pup, but once the Pyr got to 7 months the Retriever was less friendly about sharing. So when the Pyr growled, we let her know that behavior would not be tolerated. It happened again about a week or so later, again, we corrected her and let her know we did not allow that behavior. She loves to eat from the Retriever's bowl. We allow it as we don't want either dog fighting over food. The Retriever will eat as she sees fit, sometimes she waits half a day or so. We make sure the Pyr cleans her bowl first before heading to the Retriever's bowl. Really funny is when we give them both chew toys, the Retriever enjoys hers and the Pyr wants that one, despite having one of her own. The Retriever calmly enjoys hers as long as she wishes. It's like the Pyr isn't even there, moving closer, going from side to side as if the say, "I want yours..." Finally, the Retriever tires of her chew and walks off. The Pyr will pounce on it and start chewing. The Retriever will not touch the Pyr's toy unless I pick it up and give it to her, even then, she rarely wants it. They do spend a lot of time in the house with us. Outside, they romp and play, the 12 year old is as lithe and playful as any pup. She's very agile, the Pry will fall over her and looks rather ungainly trying to feint. But make no mistake, when a strange dog approaches our property - she's all speed and grace as she rushes to let them know she is here and they need to leave!

That hand shake is a natural instinct of Pyrenees. If you have two Pyrenees it is actually a form of communication between them . Most people I know call it the Pyrenees or Pyr Paw... I call it the Pyrenees Punches ... because once you get a shake below the belt it’s never the same haha.

you guys are doing so well with Mojo - it takes time to settle them and for them to learn the new territory and family and animals that they are to guard - the female dog is normally the boss if she is first in or second - we have 7 dogs in our house including a puppy (14 week) - I had the puppy in the garden playing with my two who are 7 and 9 yrs and my boy (9) got to rough with the puppy my girl (7) thought he was correcting to harshly and she fairly told him off and went after him across the house yard and they never fight or show teeth to one another so a voice command sorted that out - in his defence she did bit his boy bit and he was not pleased

You'al are doing good with Mojo. Taking time with him and don't listen to others for your Farm. You are right understand territory. Raised dogs to lead bear and wolves from Our place in Bush in Alaska. All. Black Labradors, still wasn't easy Glad the oldest took over any new dog . 3 on duty especially at night. Believe glad we had all our dogs. Was easier for me train males. They understand we had injured wildlife either to released back in the wild or sent to rescue center , no zoo's most not big enough to care of some animals.

Showing a bit of jealousy @ 10:00... lol
Mojo to Rachell in subtle dog talk:
"Hey mom, I'm over here.. Mom... Hey mom... Mom... Pet me not that other dog.
I'll get her attention... Shake mom, shake"... thinking I taught them humans good!.... lol
Critters are great with reactions and body language!
