    "Overpowered" is really only relative to what the opposing civs are like, so if the mod civs can only fight other civs from the same mod, then it's not really an issue.

    • @eru_barth
      @eru_barth 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      I believe he's perfectly aware of that and used the word just to highlight the difference in balance mechanics between the mod and the base game

    • @longbow857
      @longbow857 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I disagree. Since many bonusses have a window of great impact, the stronger the bonus the harder it is for any other civ to overcome this power spike. If the bonuses are too powerfull the civ's with the earliest big buffs will have insane win rates.

    • @theconqueror7533
      @theconqueror7533 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      That was kind of the logic used when I designed the civs. The balance is fluid however, and changes will be made when deemed necessary to establish a good balance between the Rome at War civs (they aren't meant to be played with/against the base game, so power levels comparative to AoE2 DE don't really matter, although the balance was intended to be relatively close to the base game).

    • @theconqueror7533
      @theconqueror7533 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@longbow857 Most of the biggest power shifts are in the unique techs, because some of them let certain civs suddenly pivot round into something totally unexpected, or make some of their options much stronger. The civ bonuses themselves aren't really too broken for the most part, and compared to the base game, it doesn't feel like there are too many early eco bonuses.

    • @nemou4985
      @nemou4985 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The civs actually should have been designed to be UNDERpowered compared to base game ones seeing they are lower tech and have more ancient tactics, that way you copuld really compare, but oh well, I guess its too late for that.

      Yeah. AoE1 was a good game, but AoE2 was a _great_ game, so much so that it's hard for me and I think a lot of others to go back to it. 2 took what worked with 1 and ran with it, expanded on it, built it up and introduced a lot of quality of life things that just make it feel so much smoother, and that's even been the case comparing current DE Age2 to CD or HD Age2. I hope the Age1 community gets just as much attention and love from the devs, bc I have a lot of nostalgia for that game, and even though I don't really play it anymore, I want those who do to have a quality game they can be proud of.

    Would love to see an actual "Phalanx" formation in game, where specific infantry units are locked into the formation and won't break away until formation is changed or all units are defeated. Damage mechanics would be similar to Inca's Kamayuk, where they gain +1 range and units in 2nd and 3rd row do damage through units in front of them. You could even give civ specific bonuses when using the formation. Ex. Spartans do +3 damage to Cavalry when in Phalanx formation; Romans gain +1 pierce armor / +1 melee armor when in Phalanx formation; Greeks gain 15% movement speed when in Phalanx formation. Bump up the population limit to 1000 and we've got some incredible gameplay.

    • @theconqueror7533

      The thing is, the mod does actually try and make it balanced, just not with the vanilla game in mind. It's designed (and will be rebalanced when required) so that the Rome at War civs are balanced against one another, because Rome at War civs and the base game civs are meant to be entirely non compatible in a single game.

  • @ThePoeticPariah
    @ThePoeticPariah 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I had some blueprints for something similar and had intended to make something similar... and then my computer died and I stopped working on it altogether, so it's an abandoned project. And after seeing those models, I have to say they're doing a far better job than I'd ever have done. They did such an incredible job and I'd have never been able to match.
    That said, I disagree with the factions they have planned. For example, Carthage and the Phoenicians should be the same civ as should the two Romans, the two Germans, the four Greeks etc. I feel this mod focuses primarily on the Iron Age which is a shame because the Bronze Age civs could have been an interesting showing with Hittites, Assyrians, and Babylonians. I'd love to see Roman architecture in use by Etruscans and Samnites whereas Greek architecture could be seen with Greeks, Illyrians, and Minoans or something like that.
    Buuuuuut, the difference between their ideas and my ideas is that they're actively implementing it whereas I never even got close to having anything passable. So, I have mixed feelings but I'm glad for them anyways. Well done. :D

    • @DiocletianLarius
      @DiocletianLarius 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's cool how they separated the different factions, the Roman Republic wasn't the same as the Roman Empire, and making a whole Roman faction with a unit roster of 250 BCE's hastati, 55 BCE's antesignani and 150 AD legionaries would be either impossible or a mess. Same with the rest, despite Carthage being a Phoenician colony, they were a culture on their own, its kinda like putting together 1700's USA with 1100's England.
      If I was a modder I'll go even further by separating some "barbarian" tribes the same way they did with the Greeks. Celts and Germani were a bunch of different tribes and kingdoms grouped together by the Hellenics/Romans and only loosely based on cultural ties, (which its like saying Greeks, Etruscan and Romans were the same because they believed in somewhat the same gods), Franks had nothing to do with the Cherusci or the early medieval Vikings for example

    • @ThePoeticPariah
      @ThePoeticPariah 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DiocletianLarius Concerning Carthage being their own culture, when Alexander the Great sieged Tyre, many denizens fled to Carthage because they were the same culture. Furthermore, the differences between the Roman Republic and Roman Empire could be reflected through age progression.
      After all, there isn't a Castilian Civilization paired with the Spanish. As such with the Athenians, Spartans, Cretans, and Macedonians, my favorite Greek City State is Syracuse. If they had gone the route you suggested with different tribes being represented, it would have been Dorians, Ionians, and other Greek tribes. Instead, they chose to display specific Greek city states rather than leave some ambiguity. So if I wanted to portray the Siege of Syracuse in a custom map, which Greek civ would I use? What about Massalia when Caesar, playing as the Roman Empire, fights against the Roman Republic?
      It's not easy and there are no clear answers. However, despite this, they appear to be doing well enough regardless of what we think.

    • @DiocletianLarius
      @DiocletianLarius 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThePoeticPariah I think they fled because it was their colony after all, like British rebels fleeing to British America. Carthage only become prominent and independent somewhat in the 700-600 b.c.e, after Tyre's full decline, and I'm talking about that Carthage, that not only was a independent entity as itself but also went through a lot of cultural changes, they even become hellenized, like many other cultures at that time. Historians tend to divide into "Phoenician" and "Punic" as separated cultures, and yes I get that Punic is the Roman way to say Phoenician, but they were still really different, only sharing common cultural ties like Latin America and Spain.
      I agree, the Roman Republic and Roman Empire could be reflected through age progression, it actually is like that in a lot of games, but it tends to be messy or to lack things, and this way you could go full display and have different mechanics. Imagine if you want to play a Punic wars scenario with Rome vs Carthage and you stopped having hastati in the castle age?
      It's not different tribes as I suggested, but different city-states and kingdoms (in the case of the Greeks), as they were really varied even in terms of religion in each polis. Political entities like the Ptolemaic Egypt and Macedonia, Sparta and Athens or Pergamon and the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom shared a lot of cultural ties, but they werent the same, not even in a military (or we can even argue cultural) sense. The same thing I think about the celts and germanics.
      I don't know what kind of civ you could use with Syracuse, as I think it also had their own culture (despite being a colony of I think Corinthians-Dorians?)
      If you are talking about the Siege of Massilia, why would you use Roman Republic vs Empire? Caesar didn't become emperor. You should use Republic in both sides, but seeing that the "Empire" faction has Marian and Early Empire troops, I think you should go both Roman Empire, as it's closer chronologically
