Shout out to sotl for pronouncing correctly the plural of condottiero: "condottieri" and not "condottieros" like all the other English speaking TH-camr say.
Quick, expensive, and often not the best choice long-term is pretty reflective of history when it comes to Condottieri. To be truly accurate, though, they should be particularly vulnerable to conversion, since real-life Italian mercenary companies were notorious for accepting bribes.
I like that idea on paper, but I feel like they would need to be stronger in some way to compensate for such a crippling weakness, were it to be implemented. Particularly at top level play, it would mean you just never see the unit at all except maybe for teams with Teutons! Sometimes balance consideration is better than a bit more historical accuracy ^^
@@Kihanacloudy Now that I think about it, Italians don't get Heresy, so any converted Condottieri fight for the enemy. I guess that kind of covers the bribery parallel.
Teutons with Condos feels so good to play. Friendship with the ETK has ended. Finally a fast-moving, tanky unit that also shreds gunpowder and doesn't take any lenghty upgrades. Godly infantry unit imo for Teutons.
Historically makes no sense why they counter gunpowder, to be honest I’d rather have unarmored fast moving infantry counter gunpowder for historical accuracy

Thx for the video, really informative. Also wanted to ask again (I asked on the last video) if you would do another video on civ bonuses carrying over/getting lost on conversion. You did one years ago, but there's a lot of new civs now. I'm particularly interested in the bonuses such as polish vills healing, or the infantry trample damage tech.
Because Condoterrieo were meceneraries it makes sense that their gold cost is higher than champions. However, their food cost and their creation time don't make sense. Mercenaries should be able to create almost instantly.
Goth Flank with Italian Pocket on Arena can be a real killer. Your allies sling the Goth player to imp at around min 16, the Italian fast castle castle drops with petards, and then 3 barracks condos just kills everything. It felt super dirty to play, but man is it fun
Playing 2v2 (Italians and Dravidians) was amazing with these guys. I would spam condos with Wootz Steel if needed and my brother would cover them with his Genoa Crossbows. We win about 5 games in a row using that combo.
I think the clearest use case is for a civ that has great champions/similar unique units against civs that want to counter with gunpowder. Being able to swap back & fourth to a faster anti-hand cannon version of the same unit as needed with no transition cost really takes that solution away from the enemy and the speed is huge against a gunpowder heavy civ beyond hand cannons. You can force a different counter to the main unit or anticipate their counter and prempt the hand cannon switch and catch em with their pants down if you time it right.
Since this video was made before mountain royals dlc came i must point out that Armenians unique tech apply to condottieri, making them having a whopping 110 hp, its is kinda broken when your pair italians and Armenians
well I don't think I'll ever use the condottiero.. mainly because I don't actually play this game, but still love the vids.. Its like recreating the feeling of reading an old school game manual
"If you have the gold..." Well, in team games, you can trade for it. Wanna mention that among the Infantry-civs, Goths actually don't have Supplies, meaning their Champions aren't that much cheaper compared to Condos. Also, they have the hidden bonus of your opponents maybe mistaking them for Huskarls, especially since they are more likely to make HC when up against Goths.
I think Burmese is a very good civ to use condottiero after pure booming to imperial age to have fast like-champion rush But could condottiero get a buff to gain 1 attack more please?
6:57 - It's rare that I feel like the AoE 2 attack animations have any weight behind them, but that hand cannoneer got taken to the chopping block, sheesh!
I've played Italians a fair bit, but I rarely use condos. They tend to be more of a niche unit (one that usually comes with missing upgrades). Also, when I do use them, I often don't have a lot of infantry upgrades (as in, I typically spend 100 food to get the first infantry armor upgrade). One time I used condos that stands out in my memory is against a Bohemian AI that had lots of Hussite wagons. Condos get bonus damage against the wagons, deal well with hand cannons and monks (speed and good attack), and don't take bonus damage from halbs. So Condotieros are a strong unit against the Bohemians. That said, there are a few gunpowder units they don't do well against (Conquistadors kite them and janissaries as mentioned in video) I do agree that the Condos tend to be more helpful to the non-infantry civs (with full blacksmith for their infantry) than the infantry civs. My one notable exception is the Goths who have a potent fast-imp into Condos and who technically are missing supplies and practically get arson for free. I consider the Goths to be the civ that can make the best use of the Condos.
It might also worth comparing a fully upgraded Condottiero (with Pavise) to an Italian Hussar. The Hussar costs 80 food and has - 95 HP - 1.5 tiles per second movement (+10% with husbandry) - 11 attack - 4 melee armor - 6 pierce armor - 1.9s attack speed - 30s creation speed - bonuses against monks The Condottiero costs 50 food and 35 gold and has - 80 HP - 1.2 tiles p.s. movement (+10% with squires) - 14 attack - 5 melee armor - 5 pierce armor - 1.9s attack speed - 18s creation speed - bonuses against gunpowder - benefits from Arson So the Condottiero is a bit squishier and still slower than a Hussar, but deals more damage. Costs a lot of gold though, so I think you rather want to get the Hussar upgrade and make that instead unless the opponent has pikes/halberdiers everywhere.
This beauty quickly became a favourite unique unit of mine. Not only is it a revolutionary form of team bonus, and an anti-gunpowder unit. It is also a faster swordsman you can quickly tech into. My one complaint of it being worse for Italians than their allies have been solved now. Besides, always loved sword and shield infantry. Who doesn't want to build their own legion?
Honestly I think their biggest boon is their speed. Given how micro and fights can come down to second decisions, having a cheap stat stick to be able to pressure or micro more effectively is pretty good.
They were nerfed a bit too much when they got their nerf close to release. I used to think they were a castle age unit and there wasn an elite condotierro. On BF I used to go fast imp to mass condos. Was fun.
The Italian-Slavic Mafia scares the crap out of me, but the Lithuanian Condottiero scares me more since you can focus on cav upgrades and just use a good inf replacement. Not to mention the free gold from relics.
A bit late, but when you mentioned the Bulgarians, you should've mentioned that they automatically get swordsman upgrades in each age, so Two-Handed Swordsmen and Condottieri are both instantly available in the Imperial Age. That's a pretty important point that makes them similar.
hi! SFTL! please make a video with the best trebuchets: Huns (+30%acurracy) Britons (warwolf) tartars (+2 distance atack) Saracens ( +damage) Teutons (+meler armour) Japanese (kataparuto) Mongols (moves faster) Celts (+ hp) and may another ones!!!
I really wish you would have mentioned or showed how they do against conquistadors or things like hussite wagons. I know you mentioned the armor only is effective against hand cannoneers, but considering their bonus damage against gunpowder units that could have been interesting.
Honestly I’m just imagining the Japanese version. The Japanese are now attacking in Italian… Also probably also railing a line before battle because sweet lord that attack speed. Faster than any other melee in the game at that point.

I can see that. Thing is, Italians have good cavalry, including fully upgraded hussars. And hussars tend to be better in that role than condos (especially since hussars don't cost gold).
@@jasonsmith1950 but not all of their allies do
Shout out to sotl for pronouncing correctly the plural of condottiero: "condottieri" and not "condottieros" like all the other English speaking TH-camr say.
Quick, expensive, and often not the best choice long-term is pretty reflective of history when it comes to Condottieri. To be truly accurate, though, they should be particularly vulnerable to conversion, since real-life Italian mercenary companies were notorious for accepting bribes.
That maybe covered by the fact that Italians dont have Heresy.
Cool idea. I dont think that would affect play too much, since they move rather fast and they should 2 shot monks.
But why they ressist bullets
Condottiero look amazing, and I think that's what matters the most.
Their weakness to slingers is a small silver lining considering Incas' weakness to gunpowder, especially with the Italians' 20% discount 😆
I like Condottieros design, they look truly medieval :)
A video like this for the Teutonic Knight.
"Penthouse"-tierris had me in stitches :D
Italians as a whole generally are very underrated
Teutons with Condos feels so good to play. Friendship with the ETK has ended. Finally a fast-moving, tanky unit that also shreds gunpowder and doesn't take any lenghty upgrades. Godly infantry unit imo for Teutons.
Honestly, i love them because they are the coolest looking unit in the game IMO. I love their attack animation!
Historically makes no sense why they counter gunpowder, to be honest I’d rather have unarmored fast moving infantry counter gunpowder for historical accuracy
Well a lot of things in AoE 2 make no sense historically lol
@@dirkauditore8413 lol
Penthousettiero, nothing more to say (*claps at home*)
I like how you call them Condottierro's and Condottierri intermittently.
One is the singular possessive and the other is plural
@@pattonramming1988 Idk what any of that means, english is not my first language, all I know is silly shit sounds silly.
@@imjusthappytobedepressed1123 "That condottiero is all by himself."
"Those condottieri are taking that building down very quickly!"
"The condottiero's attack bonus vs gunpowder unit is very effective."
See the difference?
Thx for the video, really informative. Also wanted to ask again (I asked on the last video) if you would do another video on civ bonuses carrying over/getting lost on conversion. You did one years ago, but there's a lot of new civs now. I'm particularly interested in the bonuses such as polish vills healing, or the infantry trample damage tech.
What about Aztecs. Doesn't their unique tech Garland Wars give +4 attack to infantry including the Condorttiero?
First the Turks with the Berbers, and now Persians with the Italians, I'm really digging this trend of "match made in heaven" civ combos
This was very interesting! Great Job
I absolutely love watching your videos
Because Condoterrieo were meceneraries it makes sense that their gold cost is higher than champions. However, their food cost and their creation time don't make sense. Mercenaries should be able to create almost instantly.
Goth Flank with Italian Pocket on Arena can be a real killer. Your allies sling the Goth player to imp at around min 16, the Italian fast castle castle drops with petards, and then 3 barracks condos just kills everything.
It felt super dirty to play, but man is it fun
This is exactly what I needed 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Thank you :)
Playing 2v2 (Italians and Dravidians) was amazing with these guys. I would spam condos with Wootz Steel if needed and my brother would cover them with his Genoa Crossbows. We win about 5 games in a row using that combo.
Really that sounds amazing
@@pattonramming1988 it’s always hilarious, especially cause nobody is thinking of a transition like that.
At 7:36 did the Janisarry miss the 2nd shot on the champ? Looked like that
I always find it hilarious for this unit running so fast when wearing this heavy armor 🤣
I usually like the looking of this unit though😍
I think the clearest use case is for a civ that has great champions/similar unique units against civs that want to counter with gunpowder. Being able to swap back & fourth to a faster anti-hand cannon version of the same unit as needed with no transition cost really takes that solution away from the enemy and the speed is huge against a gunpowder heavy civ beyond hand cannons. You can force a different counter to the main unit or anticipate their counter and prempt the hand cannon switch and catch em with their pants down if you time it right.
I can only afford an Apartmenttiero.
I feel like the Condo should have some bonus resistance against Janis, seems to be their reason to exist no?
Maybe a reducted version of their bonus.
It only makes sense given how the condotiero is described as an anti gunpowder unit
I had no idea the conditierri we're actually this good of a unit
"If you have the gold..." Well, in team games, you can trade for it.
Wanna mention that among the Infantry-civs, Goths actually don't have Supplies, meaning their Champions aren't that much cheaper compared to Condos. Also, they have the hidden bonus of your opponents maybe mistaking them for Huskarls, especially since they are more likely to make HC when up against Goths.
Huskarls -> 😳
Malian condottiero -> 😳😳😳😮😮
Wootz steel condottieri...
I need to try this.
Malay forced levy seems legit good combo, really gotta try it.
Does he have any bonus resistance against the new Persian castle?
I think Burmese is a very good civ to use condottiero after pure booming to imperial age to have fast like-champion rush
But could condottiero get a buff to gain 1 attack more please?
6:57 - It's rare that I feel like the AoE 2 attack animations have any weight behind them, but that hand cannoneer got taken to the chopping block, sheesh!
I’d be up for some more mercenary type units in the future that enable other civs to make them.
That said, there are a few gunpowder units they don't do well against (Conquistadors kite them and janissaries as mentioned in video)
I do agree that the Condos tend to be more helpful to the non-infantry civs (with full blacksmith for their infantry) than the infantry civs.
The Hussar costs 80 food and has
- 95 HP
- 1.5 tiles per second movement (+10% with husbandry)
- 11 attack
- 4 melee armor
- 6 pierce armor
- 1.9s attack speed
- 30s creation speed
- bonuses against monks
The Condottiero costs 50 food and 35 gold and has
- 80 HP
- 1.2 tiles p.s. movement (+10% with squires)
- 14 attack
- 5 melee armor
- 5 pierce armor
- 1.9s attack speed
- 18s creation speed
- bonuses against gunpowder
- benefits from Arson
So the Condottiero is a bit squishier and still slower than a Hussar, but deals more damage. Costs a lot of gold though, so I think you rather want to get the Hussar upgrade and make that instead unless the opponent has pikes/halberdiers everywhere.
Condotiero is the funnest imo I love playing teams where everybody can make each other's units
Great video SOTL! What about Huskarles and Jennisaires/Hand Cannoneers?
This beauty quickly became a favourite unique unit of mine. Not only is it a revolutionary form of team bonus, and an anti-gunpowder unit.
It is also a faster swordsman you can quickly tech into. My one complaint of it being worse for Italians than their allies have been solved now.
Besides, always loved sword and shield infantry. Who doesn't want to build their own legion?
Honestly I think their biggest boon is their speed. Given how micro and fights can come down to second decisions, having a cheap stat stick to be able to pressure or micro more effectively is pretty good.
"Instead of getting Condottiero you're getting Penthousettiero" what an amazing pun!
That condo/penthouse ttiero joke was surreal man 😂
Love the classic style video
I’m just here for the penthouse joke, nice one spirit
I still miss stingers original extra attack. I think they should get an elite slinger to get that attack back
They were nerfed a bit too much when they got their nerf close to release. I used to think they were a castle age unit and there wasn an elite condotierro.
On BF I used to go fast imp to mass condos. Was fun.
Tatar condos will miss two armor upgrades. I don`t think they will consider making any infantry besides halbs
With Tatars, they're apartmenttieros
02:10 - What is the White Cannoneer?
Love you´ve used the plural form in italian propperly
The Italian-Slavic Mafia scares the crap out of me, but the Lithuanian Condottiero scares me more since you can focus on cav upgrades and just use a good inf replacement.
Not to mention the free gold from relics.
I wonder if the Italian's popularity is going to see a bump from this video
I think they should be buffed a bit by having the unique Italian tech apply to ally condotiero units as well.
Can we get a ranking of all the special units, and why the Arambai is the absolute worst?
A bit late, but when you mentioned the Bulgarians, you should've mentioned that they automatically get swordsman upgrades in each age, so Two-Handed Swordsmen and Condottieri are both instantly available in the Imperial Age. That's a pretty important point that makes them similar.
0:30 God punished the Romans by turning them into Italians
hi! SFTL! please make a video with the best trebuchets: Huns (+30%acurracy) Britons (warwolf) tartars (+2 distance atack) Saracens ( +damage) Teutons (+meler armour) Japanese (kataparuto) Mongols (moves faster) Celts (+ hp) and may another ones!!!
Im a big fan of the Tatars "termobaric trabouchet" but i suspect that in genersl the Japanese one is better cause it fires faster.
Viking Penthousetierri needs to become canon.
Game: "Condottiero"
Me: "Condorito"
I really wish you would have mentioned or showed how they do against conquistadors or things like hussite wagons. I know you mentioned the armor only is effective against hand cannoneers, but considering their bonus damage against gunpowder units that could have been interesting.
Yes! My favorite gifted unit as a goth player!!
Honestly I’m just imagining the Japanese version.
The Japanese are now attacking in Italian…
Also probably also railing a line before battle because sweet lord that attack speed. Faster than any other melee in the game at that point.
Sweet I main persians in team games, helpful to know this! after i've douched, been a nuisance for 30 minutes, then reboomed (maybe twice) and we are two hours into team games, i'll have a late game infantry option!
Wonder if the Woad Raider is faster then a Condottiero, I was shocked to see it run faster then a horses!
If they are going to make it so the Condotierro only resists bonus damage from gunpowder units with anit infantry damage, i wish they just made it resist damage from a ll gunpowder units instead. Maybe give gunpowder units a slightly different damage class or something, or give those units a malus vs condotierros, currently it just feels wrong.
That was an unexpected pun. I approve.
