I just don't understand why fast moving infantry units like the Condottiero or the Woad Raider don't have a running animation when there's a bunch of running units on foot in the game already. Edit for reference after a quick glance at the wiki: Plumed Archers are running and have a speed of 1.2, the same as Condotteri. Even worse, Woad Raiders actually outpace Elite Eagle Warriors with 1.38 speed after the Celts' civ bonus vs 1.3...
@@hansoskar1911 True but my point still stands though. If a unit like the Plumed Archer can run at 1.2 speed surely just as fast or even faster units should be able to run, too. Also, it's not like the Eagle Warrior's running animation only starts after researching squires.
It's perfect AoE2 logic! I actually do like the fact that there are just some units that power walk ridiculously fast. It's so menacing and intimidating. The best idea is to actually give Teutonic Knights a running animation but keep their speed the same :D

7:20 The only problem I see with this is that, as italians, you are not likely to be using Pikemen against cavalry, but Genoese Crossbowmen, which not only you can get fully upgraded, they also work well for other archer roles, and you can start massing them up from Castle Age. Of course, they cost gold, so if you are short on that, you could make pikemen, but if you are short on gold, you can't make Condottieros to counter the enemy hand cannons xD.
While that's true in the booming maps like Black Forest and Arena, there can easily be cases where you're just under too much pressure to transition into collecting stone for the castle(s) needed. Couple that with the fact that if you drop an additional barracks or two you could easily push a greater mass sooner and it makes sense why sometimes the Genoese X-Bow might not be as viable.
@@pattonramming1988 Really? I'm not an expert, but most guides pretty much tell you to focus on one or two units with your economy as you continue to build your economy?
I see them most in team games on water maps, where they're a very fast-producing unit with great stats that needs no upgrades - play water all game, then land on hitting imp, dump barracks on the enemy islands, flood condos into their base. The fact they don't need any techs to be good is the most important thing about them frankly.
Fun strat is to play Italians goths on a map like arena. Sling the goth up to imp then he spams condott which are obscenely cheap and you can run over players
@@gilb_4 Doesnt have any attack bonus against cavalry though. Also less pierce armor. So while they are better against Champions or Gunpowder, they are worse against cavalry and archers (compared to Eagles).
IMO Italian ally in Arena is SOOOO good. When flank is against Turks for example who you just know are going to go fast imp, you can match and then do Condottiero + Siege Tower follow up. Slaughters every time
Quick, expensive, and often not the best choice long-term is pretty reflective of history when it comes to Condottieri. To be truly accurate, though, they should be particularly vulnerable to conversion, since real-life Italian mercenary companies were notorious for accepting bribes.
I like that idea on paper, but I feel like they would need to be stronger in some way to compensate for such a crippling weakness, were it to be implemented. Particularly at top level play, it would mean you just never see the unit at all except maybe for teams with Teutons! Sometimes balance consideration is better than a bit more historical accuracy ^^
@@Kihanacloudy Now that I think about it, Italians don't get Heresy, so any converted Condottieri fight for the enemy. I guess that kind of covers the bribery parallel.
Tatoh wrecked an opponent with them in a recent tournament semifinal, if I remember correctly. People were thinking the opponent had a civ win, but everyone forgot about this unit!
Historically makes no sense why they counter gunpowder, to be honest I’d rather have unarmored fast moving infantry counter gunpowder for historical accuracy
This might be counter-intuitive, but I personally have found the best use of Condottiero in my games by treating them more like a cavalry alternative than a champion alternative. Using their very high speed and durability as an excellent raiding unit
I can see that. Thing is, Italians have good cavalry, including fully upgraded hussars. And hussars tend to be better in that role than condos (especially since hussars don't cost gold).
Great video as always! I have to point out though, that at 7:32 when you compared Champion vs Condos against Janis, the Jani did miss the second shot on the champion, and I believe that would've been enough for the Champion to lose that engagement. While the Condos' anti bonus damage doesn't benefit them there, the extra speed still makes them quite a bit better in that matchup.
I think Burmese is a very good civ to use condottiero after pure booming to imperial age to have fast like-champion rush But could condottiero get a buff to gain 1 attack more please?
Because Condoterrieo were meceneraries it makes sense that their gold cost is higher than champions. However, their food cost and their creation time don't make sense. Mercenaries should be able to create almost instantly.
Interestingly enough, the biggest flaw I can see for the Condotierro is that you'd have to play Italians. I hope it's a sacrifice more players make in team games thanks to your work! The Penthousetierros line slew me, thank you.
hi! SFTL! please make a video with the best trebuchets: Huns (+30%acurracy) Britons (warwolf) tartars (+2 distance atack) Saracens ( +damage) Teutons (+meler armour) Japanese (kataparuto) Mongols (moves faster) Celts (+ hp) and may another ones!!!
Stop beating around the bush, Condottiero is a badly designed unit. Being the counter unit of a rare counter unit of a rare counter unit makes this unit so extremely rarely viable that it might as well not be viable at all. Also, the enemy will pretty much only make handcannoniers if you are already heavily invested in swordsman, in which case the whole benefit of the condottiero not requiring upgrades is wasted, since you would only use them when you already spent a lot on swordsman anyway. I don't like the developer's mentality of "if a unit has any situational use then it's a well designed/balanced unit". If the unit is so situational that it pretty much never sees play then it's a badly designed/wasted unit. There are so many unique units in this game that hardly ever see play, while archers and knights are free to dominate almost every matches.
I'm so fucking sick of archers /knights ruling the meta fr. It blows my mind how these units don't get nerfed (I dont think the cost nerf for Xbows was enough) but super situational units like condottiero or elephant archers get nerfed to the ground lol. Fuck this shit
the main niche for me is the landing with barracks on islands in imp. After heavy fights on water, which italians often win, it is really deadly to have a fully upgraded imp unit rather fast, that is really good at raidin
Honestly I’m just imagining the Japanese version. The Japanese are now attacking in Italian… Also probably also railing a line before battle because sweet lord that attack speed. Faster than any other melee in the game at that point.
Teutons with Condos feels so good to play. Friendship with the ETK has ended. Finally a fast-moving, tanky unit that also shreds gunpowder and doesn't take any lenghty upgrades. Godly infantry unit imo for Teutons.
"If you have the gold..." Well, in team games, you can trade for it. Wanna mention that among the Infantry-civs, Goths actually don't have Supplies, meaning their Champions aren't that much cheaper compared to Condos. Also, they have the hidden bonus of your opponents maybe mistaking them for Huskarls, especially since they are more likely to make HC when up against Goths.
Playing 2v2 (Italians and Dravidians) was amazing with these guys. I would spam condos with Wootz Steel if needed and my brother would cover them with his Genoa Crossbows. We win about 5 games in a row using that combo.
Their speed and bonus damage make them great at dealing with bombard cannons as well, meaning that in a team game fielding a group of condottieri makes it hard to effectively engage your allies' ranged units and/or siege.
Giving non-gunpowder anti-infantry units a specific bonus against the Condottiero makes no sense. Wouldn't it have been easier to give the Condottiero +10 Gunpowder armor instead of +10 Anti-infantry armor?
Since this video was made before mountain royals dlc came i must point out that Armenians unique tech apply to condottieri, making them having a whopping 110 hp, its is kinda broken when your pair italians and Armenians
Attack rate is a bit misleading. It's not listed anywhere, there are no upgrades to increase it (that I know of) and it makes the damage of a few units misleading. Maybe all units of the same type (all infantry, all archers, all cavalry, etc) should have the same AR to simplify things a bit.

Thx for the video, really informative. Also wanted to ask again (I asked on the last video) if you would do another video on civ bonuses carrying over/getting lost on conversion. Goth Flank with Italian Pocket on Arena can be a real killer. Your allies sling the Goth player to imp at around min 16, the Italian fast castle castle drops with petards, and then 3 barracks condos just kills everything. It felt super dirty to play, but man is it fun
hello guys, not spirit of the law is here, 4:00 about the champion line upgrade cost i am bad at explaining so i will start with the conclusion. in conclusion you can get over 75 condos out before you start paying more for condos than you would pay for full champion line upgrade. and usually at 75 untis creation your infantry would have served their purpose or have been countered somehow. also, this does not take into account the fact that food collection ratio is much slower, early game. so while condos cost more gold "since champion line upgrade cost is food focused" i would assume that we care less about gold spent if we are going to try to use condos to establish map control and get more gold on the map. now to explain how did i get the number of "more than 75" it's really simple, if we take the champion line upgrade cost of 1855 into account then give a random number of champions. lets say 75 champions in this case the total cost of 75 champions is 75x65 + 1855 = 6730 each condo costs 85 rss, so 6730 total rss to create 75 champions will create 79 condos.
It might also worth comparing a fully upgraded Condottiero (with Pavise) to an Italian Hussar. The Hussar costs 80 food and has - 95 HP - 1.5 tiles per second movement (+10% with husbandry) - 11 attack - 4 melee armor - 6 pierce armor - 1.9s attack speed - 30s creation speed - bonuses against monks The Condottiero costs 50 food and 35 gold and has - 80 HP - 1.2 tiles p.s. movement (+10% with squires) - 14 attack - 5 melee armor - 5 pierce armor - 1.9s attack speed - 18s creation speed - bonuses against gunpowder - benefits from Arson So the Condottiero is a bit squishier and still slower than a Hussar, but deals more damage. Costs a lot of gold though, so I think you rather want to get the Hussar upgrade and make that instead unless the opponent has pikes/halberdiers everywhere.

Also pairs with the other Italian unique tech, Silk Road (trade units cost -50%).
the Aztec condottiero is the best imo, it makes pure gunpowder in late game not that strong against you if you have enough condottiero massed
It is like a more elite EEW, more HP, 17 attack and 33% hp, for 15 less gold
@@gilb_4 Doesnt have any attack bonus against cavalry though. Also less pierce armor. So while they are better against Champions or Gunpowder, they are worse against cavalry and archers (compared to Eagles).
Penthousettiero, nothing more to say (*claps at home*)
IMO Italian ally in Arena is SOOOO good. When flank is against Turks for example who you just know are going to go fast imp, you can match and then do Condottiero + Siege Tower follow up. Slaughters every time
I wish siege towers were cheaper. They add a new dimension to a lot of closed games but the investment is prohibitive.
Quick, expensive, and often not the best choice long-term is pretty reflective of history when it comes to Condottieri. To be truly accurate, though, they should be particularly vulnerable to conversion, since real-life Italian mercenary companies were notorious for accepting bribes.
That maybe covered by the fact that Italians dont have Heresy.
Cool idea. I dont think that would affect play too much, since they move rather fast and they should 2 shot monks.
But why they ressist bullets
Tatoh wrecked an opponent with them in a recent tournament semifinal, if I remember correctly. People were thinking the opponent had a civ win, but everyone forgot about this unit!
Was the opposing civ Hindustanis?
@@Tocaraca Tatoh vs Running Wallhalla, Italians vs Bohemians
I love the Italians, and the Condottieri have been one of my secret weapons for the longest time, people always underestimate them on the surface
What about Aztecs. Doesn't their unique tech Garland Wars give +4 attack to infantry including the Condorttiero?
Huskarls -> 😳
Malian condottiero -> 😳😳😳😮😮
Historically makes no sense why they counter gunpowder, to be honest I’d rather have unarmored fast moving infantry counter gunpowder for historical accuracy
Well a lot of things in AoE 2 make no sense historically lol
@@dirkauditore8413 lol
This might be counter-intuitive, but I personally have found the best use of Condottiero in my games by treating them more like a cavalry alternative than a champion alternative. Using their very high speed and durability as an excellent raiding unit
I can see that. Thing is, Italians have good cavalry, including fully upgraded hussars. And hussars tend to be better in that role than condos (especially since hussars don't cost gold).
@@jasonsmith1950 but not all of their allies do
2:10 how is Photon man a gunpowder unit? He uses an energy weapon not gunpowder weapon. Fix it DE! Literally unplayable.
I feel like the Condo should have some bonus resistance against Janis, seems to be their reason to exist no?
Maybe a reducted version of their bonus.
It only makes sense given how the condotiero is described as an anti gunpowder unit
Italians as a whole generally are very underrated
Their weakness to slingers is a small silver lining considering Incas' weakness to gunpowder, especially with the Italians' 20% discount 😆
Why no "who has the best condo?"
At 7:36 did the Janisarry miss the 2nd shot on the champ? Looked like that
I think Burmese is a very good civ to use condottiero after pure booming to imperial age to have fast like-champion rush
But could condottiero get a buff to gain 1 attack more please?
Because Condoterrieo were meceneraries it makes sense that their gold cost is higher than champions. However, their food cost and their creation time don't make sense. Mercenaries should be able to create almost instantly.
We need a “the best condottiero” with examples of how they handle with, for example the Slavs splash damage bonus and all other bonuses!!
Interestingly enough, the biggest flaw I can see for the Condotierro is that you'd have to play Italians. I hope it's a sacrifice more players make in team games thanks to your work!
The Penthousetierros line slew me, thank you.
A video like this for the Teutonic Knight.
I can only afford an Apartmenttiero.
hi! SFTL! please make a video with the best trebuchets: Huns (+30%acurracy) Britons (warwolf) tartars (+2 distance atack) Saracens ( +damage) Teutons (+meler armour) Japanese (kataparuto) Mongols (moves faster) Celts (+ hp) and may another ones!!!
Im a big fan of the Tatars "termobaric trabouchet" but i suspect that in genersl the Japanese one is better cause it fires faster.
SOtL bruh your uploads are just wholesome and a joy to watch. Freaking making math fun..you cheeky sir.
Some civs can have great condotiero as infantry….viking is almost 100 life with bonus cav dps lol…..
Tatar condos will miss two armor upgrades. I don`t think they will consider making any infantry besides halbs
With Tatars, they're apartmenttieros
the main niche for me is the landing with barracks on islands in imp. After heavy fights on water, which italians often win, it is really deadly to have a fully upgraded imp unit rather fast, that is really good at raidin
I like Condottieros design, they look truly medieval :)
Honestly I’m just imagining the Japanese version.
The Japanese are now attacking in Italian…
Also probably also railing a line before battle because sweet lord that attack speed.
Does he have any bonus resistance against the new Persian castle?
Playing 2v2 (Italians and Dravidians) was amazing with these guys. I would spam condos with Wootz Steel if needed and my brother would cover them with his Genoa Crossbows. We win about 5 games in a row using that combo.
Really that sounds amazing
@@pattonramming1988 it’s always hilarious, especially cause nobody is thinking of a transition like that.
Persians: Never thought I'd fight side by side with an Italian.
Italians: What about side by side with a Condottiero?
Persians: Aye! I could do that.
Their speed and bonus damage make them great at dealing with bombard cannons as well, meaning that in a team game fielding a group of condottieri makes it hard to effectively engage your allies' ranged units and/or siege.
First the Turks with the Berbers, and now Persians with the Italians, I'm really digging this trend of "match made in heaven" civ combos
Giving non-gunpowder anti-infantry units a specific bonus against the Condottiero makes no sense. Wouldn't it have been easier to give the Condottiero +10 Gunpowder armor instead of +10 Anti-infantry armor?
Wootz steel condottieri...
I need to try this.
Since this video was made before mountain royals dlc came i must point out that Armenians unique tech apply to condottieri, making them having a whopping 110 hp, its is kinda broken when your pair italians and Armenians
Condottiero look amazing, and I think that's what matters the most.
Attack rate is a bit misleading. It's not listed anywhere, there are no upgrades to increase it (that I know of) and it makes the damage of a few units misleading. Maybe all units of the same type (all infantry, all archers, all cavalry, etc) should have the same AR to simplify things a bit.
Me when I hear the outro:
oh my, I love this music... WAIT - there wasn't an intro -> going back if I missed it -> realising there was no intro -> crying
I had no idea the conditierri we're actually this good of a unit
well I don't think I'll ever use the condottiero.. mainly because I don't actually play this game, but still love the vids.. Its like recreating the feeling of reading an old school game manual
Condottiero : an anti gunpowder unit
But don't work against janisary...
You lied to me condottiero
Well it's a double edge sword. They deal bonus damage against them but Janissaries have a sick damage right off the bat
If you can surround the Jannies , the condos will shred them
I tried Goth with an italian allie i spammed condottiero but it diden't worked, huskarl worked better because of the arrow
Malay forced levy seems legit good combo, really gotta try it.
Shout out to sotl for pronouncing correctly the plural of condottiero: "condottieri" and not "condottieros" like all the other English speaking TH-camr say.
Thx for the video, really informative. Also wanted to ask again (I asked on the last video) if you would do another video on civ bonuses carrying over/getting lost on conversion. You did one years ago, but there's a lot of new civs now. I'm particularly interested in the bonuses such as polish vills healing, or the infantry trample damage tech.
Great video SOTL! What about Huskarles and Jennisaires/Hand Cannoneers?
I like how you call them Condottierro's and Condottierri intermittently.
One is the singular possessive and the other is plural
@@pattonramming1988 Idk what any of that means, english is not my first language, all I know is silly shit sounds silly.

Can we get a ranking of all the special units, and why the Arambai is the absolute worst?
I always find it hilarious for this unit running so fast when wearing this heavy armor 🤣
I usually like the looking of this unit though😍
So you telling me i should have massed champions instead of conoteroro thats why my teammates we're raging on me
Just way too niche. Counter unit for exactly one unit in the game which is only used in niche situations in the first place.
I still miss stingers original extra attack. I think they should get an elite slinger to get that attack back
So what you're saying, is that the jaguar warrior is anti anti anti-infantry infantry infantry.
When playing nomad, Italians with condos don't scare me. Vikings or Japanese, on the other hand...
0:30 God punished the Romans by turning them into Italians
Does that means Italian civ overview next?
I’d be up for some more mercenary type units in the future that enable other civs to make them.
"Penthouse"-tierris had me in stitches :D
Honestly, i love them because they are the coolest looking unit in the game IMO. I love their attack animation!
Didn't know janissaries used Armour piercing bullets 100 years before it was actually invented. Man, the Turks were really advanced and secretive of their tech.
The question is: why would someone make handcannons against Italians? They very rarely go infantary anyway.
Well in black forest team games, usually someone makes hand cannons to counter infantry civs, so condottieri do have a niche there.
Again SotL and his anti-aztec bias, skipping the benefits from the uber-az-crazy aztec condotieri. A champ that is agile like an eagle
There's no reason to make condos when you already have mass of eagles from castle age ready to be upgraded. Eagles are far better unit.
If they are going to make it so the Condotierro only resists bonus damage from gunpowder units with anit infantry damage, i wish they just made it resist damage from a ll gunpowder units instead. Maybe give gunpowder units a slightly different damage class or something, or give those units a malus vs condotierros, currently it just feels wrong.
If you are goth with Italian ally how do you visually identify huskarls and condos... Both are twins... 😜😂🤣
I died at "Penthousettiero"...
What the heck is the unit in the middle of the gunpowder group at 2:09 ? I have never seen that before
From another comment I read it's Photon Man. I assume either a cheat or editor unit.
They were nerfed a bit too much when they got their nerf close to release. I used to think they were a castle age unit and there wasn an elite condotierro.
On BF I used to go fast imp to mass condos. Was fun.

It felt super dirty to play, but man is it fun
hello guys, not spirit of the law is here, 4:00 about the champion line upgrade cost
i am bad at explaining so i will start with the conclusion.
in conclusion you can get over 75 condos out before you start paying more for condos than you would pay for full champion line upgrade. and usually at 75 untis creation your infantry would have served their purpose or have been countered somehow.
also, this does not take into account the fact that food collection ratio is much slower, early game. so while condos cost more gold "since champion line upgrade cost is food focused"
i would assume that we care less about gold spent if we are going to try to use condos to establish map control and get more gold on the map.
now to explain how did i get the number of "more than 75"
it's really simple, if we take the champion line upgrade cost of 1855 into account then give a random number of champions. lets say 75 champions in this case
the total cost of 75 champions is 75x65 + 1855 = 6730
each condo costs 85 rss, so 6730 total rss to create 75 champions will create 79 condos.
Viking Penthousetierri needs to become canon.
It might also worth comparing a fully upgraded Condottiero (with Pavise) to an Italian Hussar.
The Hussar costs 80 food and has
- 95 HP
- 1.5 tiles per second movement (+10% with husbandry)
- 11 attack
- 4 melee armor
- 6 pierce armor
- 1.9s attack speed
- 30s creation speed
- bonuses against monks
The Condottiero costs 50 food and 35 gold and has
- 80 HP
- 1.2 tiles p.s. movement (+10% with squires)
- 14 attack
- 5 melee armor
- 5 pierce armor
- 1.9s attack speed
- 18s creation speed
- bonuses against gunpowder
- benefits from Arson
So the Condottiero is a bit squishier and still slower than a Hussar, but deals more damage. Costs a lot of gold though, so I think you rather want to get the Hussar upgrade and make that instead unless the opponent has pikes/halberdiers everywhere.
“Greetings. Traveller, from beyond the Middle East. I am the Condotierro. I offer you an accord.”
“Civilizations use the Champion to deal with trash units or eagle warriors. But you, I am afraid, are championless. I can play the role of Champion. In exchange, you must pay me 15 more gold.”
