  • From a payment card that does not allow cash withdrawals, to mandatory community service, Germany is introducing measures to make the country less attractive to migrants. The country remains the destination of choice for asylum seekers within the EU. More than 330,000 people sought asylum there last year: almost a third of all applications in the EU, according to the European Asylum Agency. But the new measures - agreed by the government and regional leaders last November - are beginning to appear in municipalities across the country, especially in eastern Germany, where regional elections are due in September. The far-right AfD party is leading the polls there and its main campaign theme is immigration. Our correspondents report.

I am a migrant myself. Just not one that stands out in a crowd, having migrated from Europe to USA. Obviously I am in favor of regulated migration, not illegal. But that is One of the problem. Regulations can be installed in good faith, trying to make sense of something that is happening anyway. But most of the time (like here in US) instead of helping integration, they only create new criminals. Involuntary Criminals, that is. The Pursuit of Happiness stated in the American Constitution is not valid if you were born somewhere else. That Pursuit of Happiness was referred to Migrants (from Europe, in that case and time) the sons and daughters of migrants pursuing their own happiness away from home, the Founding Fathers. So regulations are good, if they’re meant to help and coordinate migration. Not if they’re only trying to criminalize poor people looking for a job. The second problem is evidenced in the interviews. Several people talk about “different culture”. Different cultures can coexist, it has happened before. It can work. What it cannot work is coexistence of different religions, when those religions are seen as laws. And this works both ways. Either way, if you try to impose Christian rules or Islamic rules on someone of a different religion, you will have problems. Including rejection and including rebellion. Different cultures can mingle, not different religions.

I have lived in countries other than the one I have citizenship in, and would never have dreamed of sponging in any way, let alone sending the money of the taxpayers of that country back to the one I came from. There should be more restrictions than this. Migrants who don't meet legal visa requirements should be blocked from entering and sent home when found.

I think every time when you put people together and give them money you are doing them disservice. Its like living with your parents past your childhood. You dont grow, life doesnt pressure you to grow. It just allows you to be stagnant with some benefits. Its not good. People who want better life in Europe need to work for it. Learn language, educate themselves. Every inch of freedom they have needs to be work for, not given. Its not second childhood they should seek, but just freedom.

The government should be providing them with free education so they can enter the private workforce and start paying taxes.
