@batmantiss That's just where it fits in with my 5 saw arsenal, 550xp with a 16", 044 with the 18", 660 with a 24", 660 with a 32" and a 395xp with a 42". I believe I have a 24" for the 044 but I use it more when I'm needing power and speed to get through something fast due to tension or other circumstances.
Great Video ! I still use my 0-44 that I purchased new , I believe 21 or 22 years ago for farm use and firewood to heat my entire home with in the spring , fall and winter. The only things I ever had to replaced were chains & bars and spark plug . It sill starts in 2 to 3 pulls from cold start and first pull while being warmed up . Hey , if it ain't broke , don't fix it !
Awsome video Rich, I love my 044 12mm, I put a KS piston in it but I’m not ready to try any port work yet, You broke down that simple timing advance really good, I think I’ll do that to my saw, Love the content
I bought my ms200t and my 066 back in the year 2000 still run great I don't use the 066 though that much matter of fact the bar and chain is the same one I walked out of the store with it 24yrs ago 😊😊
Always a pleasure watching your work. I have this saw’s little brother, the 034 and it’s been around since the early 80s and despite all the new technology in the saws I run now, I still like to take it along with me when I’m just having some fun. It’s also like bringing my my best friend along, it was my dad’s saw, and we cut together like we used to. Thanks for taking good care of the old Stihls, they are getting to be rare. I like the advance timing modification you put on her, I was wondering if this would do the 034 any good or not? It’s more of a shelf queen, but it would be neat to see it run with a bit more pep. I have to admit that it’s almost all original in the heart of it, so maybe it’s better left alone. Any thoughts Richard? Thanks again for the video.
Hey, nice work. Question for you when putting it back together and installing the crank you use a puller or what’s the best way to do that on the 044? I just got my case back from Powdercoating.
Puller is best. A warm bearing and a cold crank will get the job done. It's a good idea on the 044's to install the oil pump when pulling the crank in. It keeps the bearing at the correct depth.
would it be worth it to do a timing advance on my 046 mag that has a max flow and a bark box? the thing runs great right now and i have wanted to get more out of it but am scared to do anything major to it because it runs so good already and im not a 2 stroke expert. would i need a timing wheel to do it and is there anything i should look out for to not mess it up? also would a base head gasket delete be worth it too and maybe widing out the ports without changing the timing? its an older 046 and im pretty sure has the D chamber but im not positive since ive never had it apart. or should i just run it till it blows up then mod it maybe? i use it 5 days a week for work so i know eventually its gonna blow up thats just how it goes with work saw's
A timing advance will help throttle response and slightly increase power. If your not comfortable adjusting the carburetor, I would not advise any more mods to the saw. A base gasket delete may not be possible if you have a D chamber saw. There may not be enough clearance for the piston at the top of the stroke. Minimum squish (clearance) is .020". You're probably at .024- .028" with the gasket.
@richardflagg3084 Always offer a trade for a day! Someone wants to borrow saw for just a couple hours, I get to borrow their wife/girlfriend… go ahead and run it hard and leave it dirty, Ima do the same! Yeah, yeah, I’ll be careful and take good care of her too.😉
Yes Sir, the 044 is def one of Stihl's best saws 👍👍
Best saw builder on the Tube hands down!
Thank you!
Amen. He's a natural. The way this saw runs at the end of the video is perfection.
My 10mm 044 with an 18" bar is my go to saw for almost everything! It's my favorite one to run for sure.
@@justkeepingitreal7768 ooof thats a short bar. Why not put a longer bar on it and save your back?

Thanks again sounds great. Can’t wait to run it. It was good to meet you. Great job on the video
Thank you John! Nice talking with you and your wife yesterday.
Very nice job.
Awsome video Rich,

You broke down that simple timing advance really good,
I think I’ll do that to my saw,
Love the content
If you do a timing advance, be sure to retune/ adjust the carb.
Nice work, that saw is pulling good.
Beautiful job as always Richard
You are the saw doctor Richerd!
Rich nice video. ❤❤❤
Was hoping Tim would get a fully ported baby back 🫣🫣🫣
Awesome video! Thank you! 😊
Sweet work as always Mr. Richard!
Thank you Sir
Nice build!
I imagine the storm cleanup will continue for several months?
Stay safe!
For sure, months of clean up left to do.
Beautiful!!!
I enjoy your videos Richard! Thanks for the education. I like to work on my own stuff and you give me confidence to do it.
Can't ask for a better ending than that!
Super nice! Gives me the wantsies!
That things a chip throwing machine 😮😊😊
Love it
What caused the piston/bore scoring?

Great job. But of course, that's the way you roll.
Glad to hear from ya! You doing ok?
@richardflagg3084 ya, doing good. Getting ready for our Michigan deer season. Been clearing damaged trees from a winter storm.
Awesome!
beautiful saw. sounds like it could use a turn on the H screw at 6:34
You can hear the saw four stroke in the first cut when it isn't under a full load. That's a pretty safe tune.
@ definitely safer to leave it a touch rich
Thats a good running 044.
Also good looking 066. Does the red light still work?
I got one just like it as well with a working red light
Yes it does. I've got a second one in a box that I'll restore one day.

I WILL AGREE YOU DO A VERY NICE JOB AND WHAT'S THE CHANCES OF FINDING A GOOD SOILD RUNER OR A GOOD START TO ONE 😂

Can you get big end bearings anywhere for crankshafts or have you ever done those ?
Not that I'm aware of, and no I have not attempted to.

I'd say he doesn't loan his equipment anymore.

Sumbitches anyway😂. I have found its better to go do the job for them.
Nice work. QUESTION: Is Stihl discontinuing the 391 and the 400C? If so what’s going to replace them? Probably something down the middle.
044 Factory guts.. Dang you did it well!!!
I'll bet he loans out his wife before the saw this time around lol
Is the neighbour picking up the bill?
Never seen sprocket bar li k e that
