FILM DESCRIPTION:
Having rescued robot Johnny Five (Tim Blaney) from being destroyed by the military in "Short Circuit," Indian scientist Ben Jahrvi (Fisher Stevens) moves to New York City to become an American citizen. After struggling to sell a few toy replicas of Johnny, Ben must scramble to make more when Sandy Banatoni (Cynthia Gibb) orders 1,000 for her department store. With Johnny's help, Ben begins making the gadgets, but his plans are endangered when thief Oscar Baldwin (Jack Weston) steals Johnny.

I'm 42 & I still cry when they smash Johny up & he's pleading with them not to because he's alive :'(
I bawled my eyes out in the movies when I was a little boy during that scene.
Crazy how such scenes bring out emotions that intense and with meaning . I bawled too!

Right? I'm 40 and watching these clips brings back so many memories. I watched the short circuit movies so much when I was a little kid
What I love so much about this scene is even though Johnny5 is nothing short of completely pissed at Oscar, he never stated wanting to kill or hurt the guy for vengeance, only to make sure justice was served by capturing him for the authorities. 5 truly was always the bigger man, er... machine.

Quite possibly one of the more intimidating not-a-death-threats I've ever heard. Props to the actor for giving voice to rage tempered by reason.
And you know Johnny wanted to say "Incinerate" but decided he's just not that guy
Have to respect how McKean and the other actors perform the scenes with this robot with complete sincerity and never try to camp it up.

@@bandittweintraub Tim Blaney (who voices J5) was one of the puppeteers, and he was voicing the lines live as well. It's one of the reasons why the interactions are so natural.
This movie started goofy, got unbelievably dark, then action hero style and back to campy

Michael was so awesome in Better Call Saul! I can't believe this was my favorite movie as a kid and he kills it in his roll later as I got older.

I like how Fred mentions that Johnny can't talk straight even though it's technically thanks to Fred's handy work himself.
Couple scenes before this, Johnny was only communicating via a keyboard & monitor, and Fred barely manages to rewire his voice, but soon after when Johnny shows him his damaged wires that he's completely absent minded as he has nearly zero electrical technician skills, so the reason Johnny talks so poorly without even realizing it is thanks to Fred's inexperience.
Oddly enough, thanks to this Johnny occasionally is pronouncing words backwards, such as "Derf" being backwards of "Fred" this eventually leads Johnny to unintentionally and unironically use Pig Latin against Ocsar's goons in a later fight scene, counter-intuitively since Oscar used it to get them to beat Johnny up from behind.
That's just really good writing right there, and it further develops Johnny as a Character.
And my favorite scene, when Johnny picks up Fred using that classy cartoon-ish 1950's gangster voice saying that he needs to get back at Oscar, is such a great reminder that Johnny still has such an amazing Retro TV-based Personality, something he learned from the first movie by watching TV all night at Stephanie's house.
It still blows my mind today, how movies from 1986 & 1988 have such a very well written character that happens to be a Robot that just wanted a life to call his own, and society to acknowledge him as a living being.
I think this movie is the real masterpiece! You believe that robot, you live that movie with him (it?). It is so cool...without modern CGI effects that robot looks more than alive)))
Well in Fred's defense he made it very clear when he told Johnny that he was not good at robotic engineering.
So you couldn't have just expected him to fix Johnny 5 the same way that Ben or Newton Crosby could.
And for someone that has never had any experience with engineering he did the best that he could.
Fred was able to repair Johnny 5 to at least 70%.
And I can honestly say that he deserves our respect for his effort.
So I don't think that we should blame him.
My thinking was Johnny 5 did tell Fred how to rewire so he could talk and fix him up. Once he fixed his arm Johnny 5 took over. He was only 70 percent repaired and had very little battery life left when chasing after Oscar which if you look closely his time to total memory failure was counting down. I think that is why Johnny 5 was talking in jibberish or he picked up the pig Latin. He was fully repaired yet
@@spino-tinodon1146 exactly. I'd rather have someone helping me who had no knowledge of anything than not having anyone with me at all. I guess it'd a comfort thing just having someone there.

When Johnny Five doesn't care about human life...he's *really* pissed!
To be fair, this isn't Johnny Five not caring about human life, so much as him seeking revenge for his own being devalued.

He’s always cared about human life, actually. Even though he’s absolutely pissed in this scene, all he expressed wanting to do to Oscar was capture or apprehend him, not hurt or kill him. He just wanted justice for what was done. He was always something of a pacifist though when it came to human lives, because he’s defying his original purpose as a machine of war.
5 never wanted to "kill" Oscar, just make him pay for what he did. I don't think even he knew what he was gonna do once he caught him.
Thankfully he had his laser weapon removed...

I took that personally.
I like how this works on a meta level. J5 is angry that you can show a robot being beaten like that in a PG movie but if that same scene happened to a human it'd be a definite R rating

@@codemiesterbeats Yup. They were even delightful enough to include a shot of "battery fluid" being sprayed on one of the criminals, and they chose a deep red color for it... Hmmmmm.
And the fact that Johnny also groans with pain at each impact of the things they used to beat him with.
@@ShanMichaelEscasio Same as earlier in the movie when he was struck with a crowbar in the arm and says "Ow!" I don't know to what capacity he feels pain but those moments are palpable. I'm glad this movie and it's technical, animatronic, and puppeteering are gaining traction and appreciation.

Something I knew but only really connected upon seeing this scene again for the umteenth time:
Johnny is pissed because he was held to a lesser standard than human life. Even by the villains, he was treated as less than human, more expendable to destroy; whereas the humans were just set aside. Double the injustice, double the anger.
And Johnny 5 has every right in the world to be pissed off after what those inhumane bastards did to him and for that matter any other humans other than Ben. Even Fred didn't treat him with any respect at first. It's terrible how people treat one another much less someone different from them. So we're all different! Why does that have to be such a big thing with some people? Why?

Yeah, that laser would've helped keep those goons and Oscar away better. I get that Johnny 5 didn't want it because he was against violence and killing, but he still should've considered the need for it for self protection and protecting those he cared about.

He doesn't understand his own greed, either. It isn't expressed in monetary terms but he's very selfish and doesn't understand limits. This is not a terribly harsh criticism; all children are like that and they wrote that unthinking behavior very well.

I grew up loving this movie for its insanity. Now I’m an adult and I see Chuck McGill talking to punk rock Wall-E. Best film of all time. (Just don’t mention the brown face 😞)

just LOVE how Johnny says in that sarcastic way "Sure.....kidnap the humans" Then it switches to pissed. "Destroy the machine!"

After all these years I still look at the song “I need a hero” reminding me of Short Circuit 2 over Footloose. Two tractors playing chicken, yeah not very heroic.

Considering Fred's capabilities or relative lack thereof in repairs with damages Number 5 sustained, even with Number 5 talking him through it, they were both lucky to get as far as he did.
@@chrismc410 Considering he's a military-grade robot who was nearly beaten to death, the fact that Fred doesn't know the first thing about robotics and they're working out of a *Radio Shack,* I'd say it is.

@@tjhooker824 even I don't think I'd get far. I'm certainly not the type of engineer that Ben is but my own skill far exceeds Fred's. Ben is a neurosurgeon and I'd be a general practitioner in comparison. I could fix 5 beyond 70% if I had to but to 85% if I'm lucky

exactly. he maybe flawed but at least he is aware of his flaws as the only reason he was desperate to sell johnny 5 because he owed money to a loan shark. he also said "i wouldn't trust me" knowing what he does as he too realizes he got suckered by someone even worse. repairing johnny 5 was his redemption.
Fred had a great character arc in this movie
Notice that Johnny still says that he trusts Fred even after Fred confesses to trying to sell him too in what he thinks is a lesson on the harshness of the city life. In reality....he's proven to Johnny that not did he save him at his darkest hour but he won't lie to him. Johnny actually learns what it means to trust someone.
Whoever thought that getting smashed up would bring out Johnny 5's inner Yoda.

Still cry when Johnny 5 gets battered and left for dead and im 45 in a couple of months!. As soon as he calls in the remote control aeroplanes for help though i punch the air with delight!. Such a massive part of my childhood, i remember this movie a whole lot better than the first one, and it is another great example of a sequel being even better than its outstaning original!

To be fair, Johnny was an eyewitness who may be able to Robocop Oscar with court-admissible memory, while Ben and Fred would only have been able to make allegations. Had Ben and Fred actually been credible witnesses, Oscar may have also wanted them killed.
Oscar was a jewel thief. Up until naturalization, Number 5 was considered equipment/property. One doesn't get much prison time for either theft or destruction of property. Had Ben, Fred or both of them died in the process of being forced out or during their abduction and being held prisoner, he and his henchmen would get life in prison at best or the death penalty at worst. Kidnapping, at least on the federal level alone technically is a capital offense though no one has been executed for it it by itself in decades. Murder in the commission of another crime, is punishable everywhere by life in prison without parole and at least a little over a third to not quite half of the states punishable by death
@@chrismc410 True, but Oscar wasn't a young man. The sentence he got probably amounted to life, anyway. I imagine he'd take the option with a greater chance of a clean getaway over the one that softens the blow if he does get caught.
There’s also the fact that Johnny 5 is a bigger threat to their plans. He has more physical strength, cleverness, and built-in tools than the humans. If they tried to lock him in a freezer, he could cut his way out with the plasma cutter, or have some other fancy trick to get out quickly.

I was born in 93 but these movies are still my favorite movies they are awesome johnny 5 and I still watch them now
I was born 96 and I remember having an obsession with 80s movies in grade 7.
Also born in 93 and these movies are precisely why I became a computer engineer.
