We flew Helio Courier into the Alaska Arctic for a raft trip with my 90 year uncle for a raft trip on the Kongakut River with his Son (MD) and daughter (PhD) . After ten days on the river we extracted in snow, fog and wind ten miles south of the Arctic Ocean in a Helio Courier. The pilot stayed overnight because of weather and flew two of the party of eight out, but on returning declared the winds through the passes in the Brooks Ranges and the fog were not safe for flying, so we waited for several hours. Then our Athabaskan pilot whose name I have forgotten, ferried us out in threes to an intermediate air strip still 300 miles north of Fairbanks. He stayed with us there, along with a pile of camping baggage, until the twin engine Cessna arrived to pick us up. Grizzlies had been seen on the area in the immediate time frame so our pilot remained to keep the plane as a safe haven should they appear again. They did not, and the plane to Fairbanks appeared; we loaded the cargo and our selves and droned back to Fairbanks. The airport there is probably unique having three separate landing areas for three disparate types of aircraft. Fairbanks has a commercial air liner capable runway, plus a gravel runway for small planes landing in the winter snow, the gravel giving some purchase. There is also a water landing strip(canal?) to allow float planes to land. I worked in military aerospace for most of my career, mostly on software systems, Sorry to ramble, but the Helio Courier was a great experience for us, especially since we flew it on my wife's 60th birthday and it brought us back safely.

I suspect the Helio Stallion simply was a bit over the top. The 400HP Helio Super Courier certainly was, a Canadian H400 owner that that crashed his airplane in my country (Iceland) refused to sell it to us - he was going to ship it back to Canada and rebuild it as a "regular" H295!
I have noticed that a given airframe tends to be sensitive to the horsepower available. A 160HP C172 is benign, a 195HP constant-speed-prop C172XP is more heavy-handed and a FR172-210 (a French-built Cessna 172 with a 6-cylinder 210HP engine and a big, fat constant-speed prop) has a noticeably heavier elevator. Pitch stability seems to be severely affected by increased horsepower.
My first taildragger was the H295 Helio Super Courier. It was only when I was unceremoniously dumped into the pilot's seat of a C180 that I realized that the Helio is not a run-of-the-mill taildragger! Every single taildragger I have had the privilege to fly since then is bloody EASY! The Helio is an honest handful, partly due to the main gear being located so far forward that it simply CANNOT be nosed over! (the tailwheel load of an EMPTY H295 is 300kg (660lb). Land it in a foot-deep mud field and it will simply stop instantly. No nose-over tendency. You will have a hell of a time dragging the 4000lb carcass onto an area where you can take off again, but airframe/landing gear integrity will NOT be a problem!
Now a retired airline pilot, I am privately flying (in a private capacity) a Helio Super Courier into the Hornstrandir area of Iceland. I also have an 64hp Avid Flyer we built in 1987 to play with, and it is a toss-up which is more fun! The runway requirements are uncannily similar (a 450lb plaything vs. a 4000lb fat hog). The Avid Flyer us used to safely "pioneer" new landing areas, the H295 is used for transport...

Hey Juan... just checked my log books, I made jumps# 59&60 from a " Super " Helio Stallion at Skydive Greene County Ohio on 5/7/88. 12 jumpers to 12,500 ft. in less than 10min. The plane would be on the ground loading more jumpers while the first group was just landing! That plane did everything that the Pilatus Porter could do, only better! The pilot seemed to enjoy pointing out all the patched bullet holes in the fuselage! Awesome Aircraft!! Thanks for sharing and keep em coming! Blue Skies brotherman!

I worked on a Helio Courier that was formerly a JARS plane (Missionaries). Got it fixed up with some new hoses and a transponder, then went for a ride with the pilot who owned it. He forgot to lock the tailwheel and we did a ground loop on roll out. I told him to ask the tower what they thought of that landing and they replied, "We almost fell off our chairs laughing." The main wheels had a pivot feature too, so you could better handle a crosswind. I also thought it was strange how the leading edge slats would come out one at a time, however they pleased.

In 1986 I made a number of jumps out of Jim Perry's Helio Stallion at Batavia ,NY. Myself and a few others found out he was heading to Bromont, Quebec so we drove there and got lots more jumps out of the Helio & a Twin Otter. The Helio was an amazing 'Jumpship' and Jim was an amazing pilot.

Used to fly with a Helio Courier driver who flew it in the back country for upwards of 50 years. An engineer by trade, he's also a skilled machinist and fabricator - which obviously helps, Just seems HC drivers are more faithful to their hardware than most - and like to say "If it had claws, you could land it on a fence post." He could do some pretty awesome stuff with it I couldn't do in a Cub.

Back in my college days, I work as a lineman(Ramp Rat) at HUF. A Helio-Stallion landed, taxied to the terminal. Pilot had a cup of coffee after dropping of his passengers. When he was ready, he cranked up and called for take-off. The tower gave him taxi instructions. After a VERY SHORT time, the pilot said he was ready for take-off. Again the tower gave taxi instructions to the runway. He acknowledge that and he was ready for take-off NOW. The tower cleared him for take-off, meaning after he got to the runway. Instead the pilot whipped the plane around and took-off from the ramp. The wind "T" was about 300 feet from the terminal. The stallion was about 100 ft in the air by the time he got to the wind "T". The tower chewed the pilot out but nothing they could do as they had 'cleared him for take-off'. What a sight to see

This one was the only civilian version made. Main difference between this one and the military versions was this one had control yokes and the military ones had control sticks. Also the air intake on this one is different than the military versions. I saw this plane in Oshkosh a number of years ago and had a chance to talk to the owner.

The other one I don't know a whole lot about. I believe it's based out west somewhere. Supposedly the founder of Oakley sunglasses owns that one.

@@terryklun498. The founder was Jim Jannard, also the founder of Red Corp which was purposed to design and develop the RED digital cinema camera system. He is of that age where he should kick back and enjoy a retirement but if he was ever so motivated, an improved Helio would surely be back in production.

I have 100 hrs in a Helio HT-295 Courier, which is another rare Courier derivative. Scary to fly in strong winds and turbulence. IIRC, our airplane had a maximum demonstrated cross-wind component of 8 knots. That said, she could take off at MGTOW and clear a 50 foot obstacle in 630 feet.

There was one in KAWM West Memphis Arkansas doing touch and gos in the summer of 1986 or 1987. I had heard that a FedEx pilot owned it. Whoever was flying it was having a difficult time with it. It almost ground looped a few times.

The Stallion is a STOL aircraft, meaning it can take off and land in very short distances, BUT ALSO because it's so rare, the only way *you* can have one is if you *stole* it! -- G, D, RVF!
