The Panasonic GH6, was a highly anticipated addition to the GH series, has generated significant buzz within the photography and videography communities. With its Micro Four Thirds sensor, the GH6 promises enhanced capabilities, particularly in terms of ISO performance.
In real-world applications, the GH6's ISO performance proves to be versatile and reliable. Photographers and videographers can confidently use the camera across a broad range of lighting conditions without significant concerns about noise and detail loss. When compared to other cameras in the Micro Four Thirds category, the GH6 stands out for its improved sensor and processing capabilities.
The GH6 also compares favorably with some APS-C and even full-frame cameras, particularly when considering its compact size and weight advantages. While full-frame sensors generally have superior low-light performance due to their larger size, the GH6 holds its own thanks to Panasonic's advancements in sensor technology and image processing.
The Panasonic GH6's ISO performance is a testament to the advancements in Micro Four Thirds technology. With a robust native ISO range and effective noise control, the GH6 caters to a wide array of shooting conditions, from bright daylight to challenging low-light environments.
Its ability to maintain detail and color fidelity across various ISO settings makes it a valuable tool for both photographers and videographers seeking a versatile and high-performing camera. Whether you're capturing stills or video, the GH6 offers impressive ISO performance that meets the demands of modern creators.

Grant, I don't have a GH6. I have an OM-1 (not the mk ii). I recently recorded my neice's college graduation in a relatively lowly lit auditorium that had about 1000 graduates sitting in the pit (an area about 1/3 the size of a soccer field) with viewers in the stands off to the sides. I had auto ISO set to max out at 12,800 for video. I used the Olympus 40-150 f/2.8 lens. Video came out nicely. I shot stills with auto ISO set to max out at 25600 and a min shutter speed of 1/800 to minimize blur from graduates walking. Images came out nicely. Minimal noise easily corrected in post.

Grant, I use DXO Pure RAW (or it comes in the full version of DXO). I've shot images at 12800 on a GX85 and it has come out clean and sharp with DXO. Yeah it's an extra step if you don't use DXO put it basically eliminates the M4/3 low light disadvantage. I hear Topaz noise reduction is good too.

Also recall the M43 systems have a great OIS capability which buys you a lot of low light capability for may shots and video modes.

I used the GH6 since it came out after 5 years with the GH5 and switched now to the G9-II. The GH6 is pretty good in low light but low light depends more on the lenses than on the sensor size. In low light, I switch from the 12-60 to the primes like the 12mm/1.4 or the 9mm/1.7. This allows 2 stops lower ISO. I'm sure you do the same with the G9.
For stills, you might like the HHHR-mode in the GH6. The implementation is easy to use. If you have set it up, you can just switch the left wheel to HighRes and take the picture and wait around 10s. It takes care of moving objects and you get a high quality image in RAW and JPEG with significantly more details. Only the moving objects are in normal resolution. You can get one of the images in normal resolution in addition to the HigRes and compare them and to have a backup if the HighRes failed for some reason.
Don't expect a huge jump in low light quality if you compare the G9 with the GH6 or the G9-II. They are slightly better - even with the higher resolution.
The GH6 has the advantage to be able to film continuously in very demanding modes in camera without overheating. This might be a thing if you need a camera to run for a full event on a tripod. It also can do this in open gate, 5.7k60p or 4k120p so you get the whole event and have a lot of room to zoom in or pan with open gate or slow motion if needed. This might be interesting if you film sport events or performance on stage. This capability to film 4k120p or FHD up to 300fps is also separating the camera from the S5-II. I do this also if I film a short pan or move around objects and such. It improves the already good stabilization even more if you slow the pan down by a factor of 4.
The G9-II has PDAF. Important is also DR-Boost in all ISO-Settings. This gives better DR below ISO800 compared to the GH6. Above ISO800 they are more or less the same. Amazing is also the new e-stabilization for video. It is also smaller and lighter. For me, the G9-II is much better for what I do but for reliable long recordings, the GH6 is the best you can get in MFT. I try to go up to ISO3200 and avoid ISO6400 but I use it if it is very dark. For video and the 1/50s exposure, this means I can't see much anyway. If you go for stills without motion blur, you probably need very high ISO and this is an area where all the sports or wild life photographers are going big if they can afford it (and are able to carry the stuff).

The GH6 is a notoriously noisy camera. It’s actually one of the main reasons why I sold it. 2000 base iso is noisy af. I would sell two or three of the MFT lenses and get the S5ii. You won’t regret it and your clients would love you for it.

So in video I shoot vlog with Dr boost on and that puts the iso @ 2000 native. I can go up to 4000 iso and I’m fine. The thing with the gh6 compared to the g9ii, in my experience, the gh6 has more color noise in the grain so depending on your shot and how well you exposed it, you’ll need to use noise reduction. G9ii seems to be cleaner in terms of color noise at the same iso even though the g9ii native in vlog is 500.

I have 3 Gh6s which I use for concert video, not overly impressed with photos from the GH6 but then it very much leans to video. For stills I use either my G9ii or S5ii x and they're great, no problem shooting concerts with ISO up to 2400 at F2.8 and 1/125 (and with the superb IBIS I have taken that to much slower shutter speeds for effect.).

I have to add that I have the confidence in the S5ii x and G9ii to leave the ISO on auto (mostly) and if necessary adjust using exposure compensation.

I’m earning some good money from my GH5 and GH5s combo and I’m looking at the Gh6 but it’s not as cheap as you think. You will need more batteries especially if you are doing pro shoots and the battery power is much worse than the GH5 (you will need at least three if you are going for a full day shoot). You will also need to fork out more on the memory cards. If you want to record in the best codec you will have to buy the V90 memory cards and I highly advise you get the Sony Tough ones as they are very rugged for pro production compared to your standard SanDisk ones. You will also need a good quality CF express card and look to get minimum 512gb if you can as 4K and 5k will fill up the memory card quick. You may need to invest in some portable LED lights if you are shooting pro too as the low light isn’t great. You have a great camera with GH5 2 and unless you are shooting high end projects or sports or wild life to get the slow motion, I would be happy with the GH5 2 and let it keep earning you money. Don’t fall for that fomo 😉

I'm in the same boat. I have the budget to transition to full frame but I no longer want a work horse so I thought a fun compact like a new LX would be cool. Sadly the S9 wasn't that. I do need content creation tool so I figured I'll get a GH5ii for fun until the camera I'm looking for comes up.
I would say based on your needs, a GH5ii or might be more of what you're looking for as well due to budget? GH6 will need some getting used to, not sure you're into the whole mixed media deal. Plus you"ll likely need lights if GH6 isnt enough to handle your low light needs, so a GH5s is also a solid candidate if you dont mind the lack of IBIS. Also you get wider Field of View with GH5s!
But wait, rumors are circulating that we might be getting a new MFT camera announcement on June 5th? I'm curious if this is the GH7. I am skeptical. However, if true it makes the S9 controversy interesting because there were talks that the S9 wasnt meant to be the camera announced at Japan and I did think there was a disconnect between the invited guests and the camera. It makes sense that something like a GH7 was the camera meant for that crowd. But enough conspiracy nonsense. Best of luck with shopping!

I haven’t pushed my GH6 no more than 1000 iso and it was clean with the 35-100 2.8. The Gh6 in comparison with my GH5, the auto focus with the same lens is a lot more sticky and the color seems more richer I would say. And you cannot beat having the cf express slot I have a 1 tb card and if I just wanted to, I could shoot hours because I only shoot in 4k 30 422 150 megabits per second with my power bank which is the only downside compared with the gh5 there is no grip made for it to change batteries.

  • @jackoneil3933
    @jackoneil3933 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Good question Grant. I'm interested in the feedback on GH6 Low light as well. I found above 1600iso on the GH5 the digital noise reduction kicked in and I got more muck than noise. I'd rather have the noise, especially now Ai noise reduction. (Just tried Topaz Video 5 on some noisy old 4k Blackmagic, HD Sony CineAlta and 1990's 3/4" U-Matic video and it's SLOW processing but results are like magic).
I used a GH5 a couple of years ago and images were pretty much muck at 1600ISO, but my GX8 did a bit better on the same shoot. Here's the first test shot I did 5 years ago after walking out of the store with the GX8. The start is at f/2.8 and 1000 ISO, 4min is at 1600 ISO and at 6.5min is 3200 ISO no post processing. It was darker on the street than it appears in the video. th-cam.com/video/Ud4SOXVbURg/w-d-xo.html
Also, in the clip I was also using the the old Leica D VARIO-ELMARIT 14-50mm f2.8-3.5 at 2.8, and from what I can tell, it's about a stop brighter at F2.8 then the Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm F2.8. Go Figure? The Leica's front element is about 30% larger than the Panasonic's.
I've used GX8 at 1600ISO a lot with T1.4 and F1.8 lenses with usable results. I think the GH5 uses the same 20.3mp sensor as the Gx8, but at 1200 ISO The GH5 seemed to have more baked-in Noise reduction and less detail than the GX8 at 1600 ISO. Looking at the DXO mark the GH5 ranks about 1/2 stop better then the GX8 in low light performance but my guess is it rated higher because they just turned up the baked-in Noise reduction. I saw no DXOmark for the GH6. My old GH3 with less megapixels (16mp) was better low-light shooter than the GX8 but only shot only in 2K.
The LX-100 uses the GH4 sensor, shooting at F1.7 is often better than the GX8 and in my opinion was sometimes better then what I saw from the GH5 because of nearly one more stop.
I can't speak to the GH6 as I've never used one but if it's using the same sensor as the GH5 and GX8, how much magic can they pull off with the higher power processor? I'd be inclined to do and some low-light A-B comparison to with the GH6 before buying one solely for low-light performance.

Difference between Base and Native ISO
    th-cam.com/video/UJ4kknj85ns/w-d-xo.html
Also, shooting LOG with the GH4/GH5, I think may have increased the noise floor. In low light with the GX8 and LX100 that dont' offer Log, I typically set the profiles and curves to flat and reduce noise reduction as low a possible and boost sharpness +1 and I got less noise and more detail than the GH4/GH5. I wish now I would have experimented more with the GH4&GH5 as what I thought was the best low light settings might have been the worst and the GX8 did better because I could not use what I though were the best settings.
Also, lens cap tests suggest at ISO 3200 a lot of color noise that was gone at 6400 on the GH5. which correlates with what I was seeing on the GH5 and to a lessor degree on the GX8 at 3200. Perhaps doing a lens-cap test on your cameras using different profiles and modes might be worth the time to try to find a cleaner combination.
    th-cam.com/video/UJ4kknj85ns/w-d-xo.html?t=529
Finally, I much preferred shooting RAW or 4:4:4 Prores with Blackmagic and CineAlta cameras to get all the info I could from the Sensor, which if not graded properly could look very noisy.
Inevitably when clients clients popped the RAW/444 footage on a premier Timeline, applied a lut they said the cameras were crap compared to a Sony DSLRS, but if I gave them footage from Resolve that was properly graded and de-noised, the detail, color quality and dynamic range was superior to their compressed footage, but the time require to produce that better quality footage from Raw or 444 takes more time than most low-dollar projects allow.
When I stopped doing client work I ended up with the GX8, LX100 and BM Pocket Cinema Camera. The GX8 and LX100 are cheap, low hassle and good enough for most quick and dirty shoots and the BM camera for Serious scenes with High contrast and low light.
A Micro 4/3 BM camera might do better for low light and high contrast video than a GH6. They are not a stills cameras but I doubt the GH6 is better than your current cameras for stills.
