  • Like tires and oil, motorcycle spark plugs are going to need to be replaced over time. Each motorcycle is different, but the average lifespan for a motorcycle spark plug is between 15,000 to 20,000 miles. Now that range is large and it could be higher or lower depending on the motorcycle you drive, so check with your manufacturer’s specifications for your specific lifespan.

I’ve been going through hell with my 96 VT1100C2. Three years ago I bought it after my friend laid it down. I rebuilt the carbs, new fuel system, and plugs. It ran fine for a year of consistent riding, about 50 miles per month or 600 miles on the plugs. Left it parked for 2 years. This month I started bringing it back to life. Again, cleaned out the tank, rebuilt the carbs, clean air filter, checked torque on exhaust, new fuel system. Ran really badly, still. I’ve pulled the carbs three times in a week and all is definitely good there. Gap was good on the plugs, but very black. It’s throwing flames from both cylinders, delayed throttle (carb is tuned and idle speed is spot on). Backfiring on decel, intermittent power while riding, dies if I try to rev it or move within 5 minutes of warming up. It’s driving me nuts! I have new plugs on the way. I’m thinking maybe they got fouled after trying to start it up 2 years after leaving it parked? We shall see.

@shadow6416 mine turned out to be a faulty battery. Somehow water got to the battery and over time corroded and also saw white residue. Not sure how I was able to ride it for so long. Good luck with yours
