I do a handful of maneuvers every week or two. I do the figure 8's until I'm smooth with them. I do emergency stops, obstacle avoidance, opposite turning, short turns, long turns slow and fast, hard turns from stopped and anything else I feel like I need to work on. This is what I've learned. 1 - My bike doesn't perform the same in different temperatures and conditions. 2 - My state of mind makes a big difference (attitude). 3 - no matter how good I think I am, I have to practice to stay sharp.
Me too. I like having people watch when I whip my Victory Vision around in tight circles at very slow rates. People cannot believe that such a big bike is that nimble. I have to explain that it is the technique and not the bike in most cases.
After being riding Motorcycles for 53 years and no accidents, I start watching your videos and I learned Lost of good tips to be more safe on the road,Jerry Thank you for all the good driving tips, you are by far one of the best on you tube, Thank you,Thank you. God Bless you!!!!!!👋👋✌
Sure wish I could ride like you. I’m 70 years old and riding my first bagger. I had an FX Springer for many years and you’re right, the bagger is a whole new ballgame. I love it though and I’m looking for an empty parking lot and a couple buddies just in case I drop it. So far so good. I WILL learn this!
I'm a new HD owner and slow riding is by far the most challenging. I asked a friend to help me the other day and he took me to an empty parking lot to demonstrate and give me some instructions. He's retired motorcycle cop 33 years. He was doing that exact figure eight within the same 4 parking spots. It was amazing to watch how he made my huge Harley look like he was riding a bicycle. He definitely helped me that day and I'm hoping someday to get to that level. Thanks for your videos also they are really helpful.
Yes it's free. But once in a while you could pick up one of my video's from ridelikeapro.com. That way, you'll have a step by step approach to learning all the exercises and the 3 techniques and I can keep this free youtube stuff coming😁

Just got my 13th bike and it’s a Harley street glide and I’m amazed how maneuverable it is. I’ve had every make and style out there and I love my Harley. Time to find a parking lot and become one with the new bike
Wow! Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. I just did the msf course about 5 days ago. I felt so awkward and wobbly just trying to do a u turn inside a box of the dimensions in your video on a small, light, bike! I was really amazed by how much of a difference turning your head makes! When I turned my head I was able to do it. When I lost confidence or looked at the controls I blew it.

At my initial motorcycle training coarse to get my license we had Suzuki GZ250s to learn on. I got so comfortable at low speeds on that little bike I bet the instructor I could do figure 8s in a SINGLE parking spot. I won the bet, though it wasn't a practical maneuver, and an impossible maneuver for most bikes. In fact, if not for the pegs folding instead of being hard mounted I would've dumped it. I had the bars full locked, peg dragging and my butt completely off the opposite side of the saddle just to keep balance. I was so happy with how maneuverable those small bikes were that I bought one for my first ride. It's an unbeatable bike for learning to finesse the bike without being intimidated by it. I'm still looking forward to one day seeing what I can do with my dream bike, a VTX1800.
Great video, I wish I had this knowledge when I rode a motorcycle in '85-'86 then had an accident that put me in a coma for over 4 days. Long recovery. I'm hoping to ride again. Thank you.

Jerry, I have you to thank in much appreciation. I've been using the friction zone on my Goldwing DCT automatic. You had voiced some skepticism in the past and I'm here to tell you I ride like I fly. I control the bike, it doesn't control me. As it is in the cockpit, it is on the road. I run mostly in the Tour mode and it does everything I like and the friction zone makes that bike stable. Love the vids and advice. Keep it coming.
In Maine and New Hampshire you can take classes to learn to ride like this. I had a friend who works at Laconia Harley and he both showed and taught me how to do it. It's crazy and fun to do.
Harleys have many things to criticize but “top heavy” is not one of them. They actually make a good beginner bike for this reason. I was LAPD motors in the late 60s and HD was the only police compatible big bore bike available. I used to dazzle the onlookers with slow riding and maneuvering which is easier than it looks with the HD. The drawbacks?…you figure that out.
Great video Jerry. I watch everyone of them and my wife and I have had the privilege to see you ride in person up in Leesburg. Thank you for what you do sir. God bless.
Hi from the U.K., Just happened to find myself here by some strtange twist of fate! Always felt easier to do things like this on my glide rather than other bikes I've owned... Great video, thanks for the instruction, that footboard scrape sounded familiar 😊 🍻👍🤙🖖🤘✌👌
Your tips are wonderful, Jerry. I have been riding for less than 2 months doing almost daily practice. One of my neighbors saw me doing figure 8 in my parking lot. He came over and asked me "how long have you been riding?". It was a shock to hear me saying it is less than 2 months. He has been riding for about 8 years, and he says he cannot do those 2 parking spaces U-turns I do. You deserve a BIG thank you!
my bro bought a Streetglide this summer. I taught him to ride using a lot of these techniques and a few people have asked him the same question. "How long you been riding?''
Not everyone gets the chance to young like I did but I dirtbiked since I was 11 and dirtbikeing helps a lot it gets you use to the clutch and turning and really everything I'm 16 now and I drive a 1700
I bought my first bike and it's a 78 Goldwing, it's a project bike as she needs some tlc to get back out on the road but I'm taking classes in the spring and summer... I've already got some funny looks & questions. I'm 5'6 and 175lbs so I know with some training and experience I'll do just fine. Thank you for the encouragement when ppl just want to knock me down because I'm a female/little lady. Hah! They said the same thing when I bought my 1st CVPI. I've been riding for 42 years. I love your school. It should be mandatory for a license. I got a Utah License back in 1985 and they actually gave a Great test. New York's test is way too easy. I would say that the riders watching should make sure the white lines in the parking lot they choose are just as big as in the video. I've found that some are much smaller. That's all and thanks for making riding safer.
I appreciate your videos. I order your video a couple years ago. Even though I ride daily and far I still pull into empty parking lots and practice for a couple minutes
I’ve been riding just less than 2 years, i chose and LOVE my Sportster. I had zero street miles on anything bigger than a 150 . Ive watched and applied your teaching and have gained skills and confidence well. THANKYOU SIR! Riding keeps me sane and active , i pity people who don’t know the joy it brings!
So you can use the friction zone while in 2nd gear to make them curves? New rider. I’m still practicing in parking lots and your lessons are the ONLY ones I’m using.
Hey jerry, thanks for your videos. I wanna say I was suprised when I learned that most american riders don't use or even know of the friction zone. I live in the netherlands and in order to even be able to take the riders exam you have to have passed a previous exam that proves you can handle the bike and a lot of those excersizes are friction zone heavy.
Jerry , thanks for bringing up the point about that bike having linked brakes, I been meaning to ask if it mattered cause I have a VTX 1800 with linked brakes, and I know how you said if the bars are turned and you apply front it will pull you right down. I contacted Marianne down here in Miami, to see when their next class is gonna be available, so I'll be keeping an eye out.
I like the bikes they are riding and would have loved having one myself 30 years ago to own, but now I am too old to begin learning all over how to ride a bike like the ones they are operating. I use to dream of owning a Harley like the large bike and not putting it down by driving crazy. Fortunately the last one I owned was never flipped while owning it until it was stolen.
Hey Jerry. That road looks nice but you really should come out to San Diego sometime and ride up to Palomar Mountain. I'm telling you, it's a beautiful ride and when you get to the top and look down, omg it will take your breath away.
I lived in Crystal River and always had a Motorcycle. Ozello and Gulf Beach road were the few curvy places to ride. I now ride Eureka Springs Arkansas where there are no strait roads!
When I went through the CA Highway Patrol Motor Academy in July of 1988, we were not allowed to use any rear brakes on the exercises, except for one exercise that was completed on an angled portion of asphalt. We had to scrub speed by leaning sharp into the next turn. It forced us to use the grey area of the clutch and lean the bike without saving yourself with the back brake. We rode Kawasaki KZ1000’s. I don’t know if training using the rear brake is a HD thing or what. When we went to BMW’s it was the same. I don’t know what the CA Highway Patrol teaches now, but I think they’re riding Harley’s these days. Best job in the world.
At instructor school they wouldn't let us use the rear brake either. However, for total control, the rear brake is needed. Watch any police rodeo and you'll notice everyone on all makes, use the rear brake.
I do a handful of maneuvers every week or two. I do the figure 8's until I'm smooth with them. I do emergency stops, obstacle avoidance, opposite turning, short turns, long turns slow and fast, hard turns from stopped and anything else I feel like I need to work on. Ive watched and applied your teaching and have gained skills and confidence well. THANKYOU SIR! Riding keeps me sane and active , i pity people who don’t know the joy it brings!
I have s Sportster too and I think 150cc bikes are as fun as a XL, just not that powerful.
Well said!
I attempted this morning on my50, need some more practice for sure, managed it a few times after some effort
So you can use the friction zone while in 2nd gear to make them curves? New rider. I’m still practicing in parking lots and your lessons are the ONLY ones I’m using.
This is a solid exercise.
Now if only I had a bike to practice with.
On my ZX-14 I practice my figure 8’s on my street in the culdesac. It works good.
You keep doing you sir! I'll be going to motor school soon and I'm using you to get me up to speed! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!!!!
Come and see me. I'll make sure you wind up at the top of your class. I've done that for over a dozen officers who were about to go to motor training.
@@motorman857 I might!!! March looks good! I'll have to get a trailer for my bike to get to you
@@brookemourey9901 I have a police R/K you can use.
@@motorman857 you would be a god send!!!!
been riding 20 years. I need to go back to basics
At least in WA, its the same. Permit test and endorsement test are both friction zone heavy.
My folks live off of Gobble! right down the street from the hollow that burnt down. Im in Pittsburgh
Thanks for great videos, got some family down where you filmed this, nice country...
What a wonderful road to ride.
We need these special techniques to pass the test and I did it at 61 … no problemen at all !!
You took your test on a 900 LB motorcycle? I'd like to see the video.
Got to hand it to you ... one of the best channels on YT !
Thank you.
Geez, I gotta start practicing more!!
With practice comes confidence--great videos
I like the bikes they are riding and would have loved having one myself 30 years ago to own, but now I am too old to begin learning all over how to ride a bike like the ones they are operating. I use to dream of owning a Harley like the large bike and not putting it down by driving crazy. Fortunately the last one I owned was never flipped while owning it until it was stolen.
Hey Jerry. That road looks nice but you really should come out to San Diego sometime and ride up to Palomar Mountain. I'm telling you, it's a beautiful ride and when you get to the top and look down, omg it will take your breath away.
The road to Idyllwild from the 74 is awesome, too, and so is the 74 - Palms to Pines to Indio. Just to name a couple other SoCal rides👍
2:28 i failed this figure 8 part of the MSF but now its basically my favorite thing to practice on my motorcycle

Saw your video tip on using the front brake in curves / turns. Thanks much!! It has made a huge difference.
That sounds pretty risky.
I lived in Crystal River and always had a Motorcycle. Ozello and Gulf Beach road were the few curvy places to ride. I now ride Eureka Springs Arkansas where there are no strait roads!
Great. We just added an Arkansas RLAP school.
Man, I need a lot of practice! Still can't come close to doing this. And I know, it's mostly in my mind...
Same here
Would like to practice these turns but on someone elses bike

Thanks for info about clutch, didn't know.
Yeah, I competed for several years in Anaheim, at Anaheim Stadium and in Huntington Beach, CA, Lots of fun, and very competitive.
Which one were you? Ponch? Or Jon?
