It's about her lying cheating man, and her telling him to go to hell before she takes him there. I could say these lyrics to my ex wife and it would all make sense to her, hopefully.
The thing about her is that people often complain that young female artists never write about anything but boy/girl stuff. And she mostly does as well, at least on this album, but it's so clever, and so intelligent, and oblique, and delivered so well that you never think of it as boy/girl stuff.
This is the quintessential break-up song. At just 14, she understood heartbreak better than most adults. This song is timeless and still kicks ass decades later. I can't believe it was the first song she ever wrote. She's a fucking musical genius and she doesn't get enough credit.
Idk, these lyrics seem like something I would have written at 14 as well. Teenagers know and feel a lot more than we give credit for, especially highly sensitive teens.

This video was given the Mtv Video Music Award for *Best New Artist* And *Fiona Apple* gave a speech ahead of its time, which no one understood, but more than two decades later made total sense.
Many years ago I was in an LA bookstore late one night. Store was empty. I was in line to buy a birthday card for a friend. A girl was in front of me. She turned around, it was Fionna Apple. She said "What does the card say?" I was rather taken aback. We chatted for a bit. I always regretted I didn't invite her to the birthday party.
Might have been for the best. There are few things that can make a person feel as desperate and helpless as one does when being forced to watch as a friend self destructs due to a wound they carry which you can do nothing to soothe. Quite frankly I'm thrilled and surprised to see that she's still alive. The woman is a warrior no doubt. I just want to be clear here - I'm in no way suggesting one ought to avoid being friends with someone because of their personal struggles in life. I just was pointing out that you almost certainly would have hurt like hell if you'd had to witness first hand the brutal battles she's gone through over the years. From what I understand she's had a pretty tortured existence from her childhood onward.
I coulda went the rest of my years without knowing ya screwed the pooch so damn hard with this! She even turned to you to begin conversation! And you proceeded to just sh*t the entire bed. So much opportunity for a flirtatious response to her question of the card....ah well.
I remember playing this as loud as my ears could take when I was 15. Tonight 15 years later I wish I had it on CD so I could blast it on my way to work. I can still remember every word. This is such a timeless song.
The lyrics didnt have meaning to me back then. It was just a song that sounded good. Now that I have life experience the song was written for me, how I feel.

Fiona Apple is the true role model. I grew up listening to her music in my teenage years, and had all of her albums. She is just herself, and unique and that's what I love about her. I also got to see her live years ago.
Her first album was a brilliant introduction. It laid out exactly who she was, warts and all. From there she expanded artistically on future albums, and her fans loved it because they already felt so close to her. Very well done.
I used to LOVE this song in my teens, but now that I'm in my 40s, I can completely relate to the lyrics in a way I couldn't as a younger woman. Everything I'm going through now...

Still not only rocking this one in 2022, but very heavily resonating with it!!!! (Not even in a relationship manner either, but a different dynamic. Still fits perfectly!) She was my absolute HERO when I was just 11 yrs old-- to this very day I can say I only appreciate her artistry more! Writing this at 14 yrs old??? Fiona soothes me in my adult years. She's a whole entire masterpiece in herself
Fiona got me through my first really hard break up in high school. LOVE HER! Even now, 10 years later, I still love her music! Her lyrics are SO MUCH better than so many main stream artists. That girl has talent! Her voice is like smooth velvet and whisky...

It’s interesting to me that the comments focus so much on the lyrics. She has a great voice, the vocal melody, the composition, the instrumentation, that fading, descending sound… Amazing music.
It almost seems like half of what she's singing is things a man has said to her and the other is what she has to say to him. Brilliant
Interesting perspective.
It's about her lying cheating man, and her telling him to go to hell before she takes him there. I could say these lyrics to my ex wife and it would all make sense to her, hopefully.

"Sleep To Dream"
I tell you how I feel
But you don't care
I say tell me the truth
But you don't dare
You say love is a hell
You cannot bear
And I say gimme mine
Back and then go there
For all I care
I got my feet
On the ground
And I don't go to
Sleep to dream
You got your head
In the clouds
And you're not at
All what you seem
This mind, this body
And this voice cannot be
Stifled by your deviant ways
So don't forget what I told you
Don't come around
I got my own hell to raise
I have never been
So insulted in all my life
I could swallow the seas
To wash down all this pride
First you run like a fool
Just to be at my side
And now you run like a fool
But you just run to hide
And I can't abide
I got my feet
On the ground
And I don't go
To sleep to dream
You got your head
In the clouds and
You're not at all
What you seem
This mind, this body
And this voice cannot be
Stifled by your deviant ways
So don't forget what I told you
Don't come around
I got my own hell to raise
Don't make it a big deal
Don't be so sensitive
We're not playing
A game anymore
You don't have
To be so defensive
Don't you plead me your case
Don't bother to explain
Don't even show me your face
'Cause it's a crying shame
Just go back to the rock
From under which you came
Take the sorrow you gave
And all the stakes you claim
And don't forget the blame
I got my feet
On the ground
And I don't go
To sleep to dream
You got your head
In the clouds and
You're not at all
What you seem
This mind, this body
And this voice cannot be
Stifled by your deviant ways
So don't forget
What I told you
Don't come around
I got my own hell to raise

I dont think i ever get enough fiona i my life, mesmerizing af
I love her voice. It's soothing.
Yes, Fiona has always been other worldly to me. This video seems to capture her mystique somewhat accurately. WHAT A TALENT!!
This person is true queen when comes to vocals and talent. Always enjoy this when it plays
I cant stop
I love her deep poetry
I got my feet on the ground and i don't go to sleep to dream you got your head in the clouds you're not at all what you seem... Love it ♥
the way i get CHILLS😍 her voice is amazing
I haven't heard her music for awhile.Shes awesome
Fiona got me through my first really hard break up in high school. LOVE HER! Even now, 10 years later, I still love her music! Her lyrics are SO MUCH better than so many main stream artists. That girl has talent! Her voice is like smooth velvet and whisky...
This WHOLE DAMN ALBUM IS A CLASSIC!! She will always be one of my top 10 faves hell maybe top 5!
Will never stop listening to Fiona Apple
She's sssssooooo talented.
im a beatles fan from when i was a child....50 years ago i was 6 years old singing come together........since 1980ish ..music hasnt done much for me and only a few artists have struck a chord over the past 40 years....fiona is one of them. ....go fiona you are great.
Have you heard her cover of 'Across The Universe'? I usually don't care for Beatles covers but that one was beautiful.
Her music delights-but her aura is enchanting. 💜
One of my favorite songs of hers ❤
This song takes me back..........
Every lyric written by Fiona Apple as well as this entire album. You could never.
This song is just simply amazing
Man.. insane. Fiona. The beauty of soul
These songs never get old 👌Fiona Apple you are a very talented woman 👏😌
I love her voice and the lyrics just scream at me!!
This album has always had such an incredible mood.
Prodigy Musical Genius ❤🖤
I’ve seen a bunch of Fiona’s videos but probably not all of them, but so far this one is my favorite ❤️
I have loved you from the beginning. I'm battling heart failure and just want to s as y your vocals have always been off the chart. I love you Fiona 🥰
It’s interesting to me that the comments focus so much on the lyrics. She has a great voice, the vocal melody, the composition, the instrumentation, that fading, descending sound… Amazing music.
I loved this song and Fiona apple when I was 13 and I still do
ive been listening since before they were on this planet
no joke on my heart
: )
