Have Modi-Biden Transformed India-US Relations Or Is That Hype and Exaggeration? | Karan Thapar Live

A live interview with Ashley Tellis, Tata Chair for Strategic Affairs at the Carnegie Endowment, on Prime Minister Modi’s state visit to America and its outcome. Was this a transforming moment as Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin predicted? How significant are the technology and defence deals? Could they stumble in Congress? Or are we likely to see America increasingly replace Russia as the source of India’s high-end weaponary? Is the White House reconciled to India’s equivocation over Ukraine? Was President Obama’s comment to CNN a coincidence or deliberate? How has the US responded to the sharp criticism Obama has faced from Indian ministers and the vitriol Sabrina Siddiqui has faced from social media? Does the visit prove the two countries share values or has concern about China cemented their ties? And, finally, does this visit suggest Biden is betting on Modi’s re-election in 2024?

"Values" - the most hypocritical phrase used by western leadership especially the Americans. Amazing , coming from an elite for whom making regular and coordinated wars in all crucial strategic theaters of the globe was the mainstay of their decadal mission of dominance. That was their dharma or core value. We all understood and accepted that. We still do. If dominance continues to be the central goal of their existence , leader nations should welcome a newly minted India eager to challenge emerging new threats to global stability. . This is the best "value" the western world can expect from India - just the pill ordered by the doctor to keep the emerging scourge called China from devouring every one in sight. If theoretically India became a ' moral exemplar' in their eyes but a weak nation with a fissiparious polity created by the dubious dictates of so called democracy , of what use would such a nation be to America's strategic needs ? Would Tellis then have even remotely considered India an" American bet " ? These folks know that the inflection point in global history is around the corner. These are postures of grandeur increasingly irrelevant in tomorrow's brave new world order. The India of western , patronising judgement is passe. It is a balancing force in its own interests. So valuable to all. Full stop.

India buying Oil from Russia has stabilized the oil market. If India did not buy oil from Russia, oil would be selling at $200 a barrel. India in addition, exports refined oil to the western countries. So it is helping the west in many ways. Other than rhetoric, I think west likes the India position.

US Supreme Court has recently ruled that discrimination illegal which means that discrimination was happening. Does this concern about protecting minorities flows only one way? There is very little in common as far shared values between two countries are concerned. A caste system ingrained in majority Hindu India, cow being a highly revered religious symbol, Hinduism considered as a polytheistic religion VS an America whose large population follows monolithic religion, are one of the largest consumers of beef and is a great proponent of human equality with no tolerance for a caste creed division at state and societal level. So the newfound love and the basis of relationship is only of shared interest of containing the global expansion of China.

microchips/semicondertors are essential comodity of 21st century as it is used everywhere. Any country's economy can be crippled and brought to grinding halt by controlling microchips supply, as shown during Covid supply chain disruptions. So made in India chips chips are strategically essential to India's security and not aimed at providing jobs. I hoped this point was highlighted in the discussion.

Micron is not producing wafer (Semiconductor) : AHH .. HAH ! More music to my ears.. Completely ignoring the fact that ISMC and Vendanta are setting up semiconductor plants. Also, the most important role of semiconductor manufacturing is national security. In the future, any nation that does not have it's own semiconductor products ( Manufacturing or IP) would be a colony of the one that does that.

Except Thapar, no one in India wants Semiconductor factories to provide employment. No nation of India's size can afford NOT TO HAVE. semiconductor manufacturing facilities. And technologists, who ought to know a thing or two are spearheading & periodically modifying policies & processes to ensure that we succeed. Like anyone playing catch-up, it requires vision, focus, realism, self-belief and a large dollop of cash. [Incidentally and without bile, we owe our backwardness in almost every field to Congress wallowing in socialism & even the sabotage of Indian efforts in becoming self-reliant in areas ranging from cryogenic engines to semiconductors]

    Karan Thapar:
Question: India centre government going for ucc , if there is huge protest by Muslim(Expected from them) Sikh(included for number only), Adiwasi (again include for number), then USA can lecture India so congress and there ecosystem can misguide Hindus(Which congress ecosystem main target) to steal some vote.
Answer: It is your internet matter we don't have anything to in this.
    😂😂😂
    Akhand bejati 😂😂😂.
Listen thapar we know countries work for there interest, not for looking good in others eyes.
They get selected by people to work for them, not to push narrative.
And Do you think USA having such control over social media doesn't know what going in india.
They know congress is finished project, so they will join the winning team, for future dirty work they will through some dollers to you to keep rulling party in check, example: jarge Sarosh
But as servent you should agree with them.
