And Neil always exemplified two things as to why we have seen a dumbing down of our nation. 1.) We no longer read books 2.) We don't listen to people who read books. RIP Professor!

13:23 - Neil calls out Maher! Brilliant!!
I've never been a fan of Maher - his overly-inflated ego, HUGE arrogance and very little talent. Maher (even then) puts himself up on a pedestal of being an authority on things he knows little (if anything) about, just so he can belittle those he disagrees with. His arrogance and ingnorance starts with the pronunciation of Peart's name!
It's nice to see Maher surounded by actual thinkers who have something meaningful to say! Bravo, Neil!!!

The moment Neil opens his mouth, you learn the difference between an intellectual and a pseudointellectual. Everyone else on the panel - host included - is grasping at straws to demonstrate their "superior" intelligence and desperately looking for validation. Neil listens, waits patiently, and he begins speaking to them on the level they've self-qualified themselves to be on. Almost immediately, they poke fun at his use of "facile," like crabs in a bucket.
Folks like Maher have more or less taken over pop culture, and our culture has become dumber - not smarter - as a result. A wide cross-section of our population gets their opinions about social and political issues from late-night comedians. These talk show hosts tell us they're smart - mostly by dragging down others - and we take them at face value. Nobody wants to be one of the dumb people in the monologue, so they fall in line and pretend to "get it." The emperor has no clothes.
We are a culture of dumbasses in disguise, living in constant fear that we will one day be found out for the impostors we are.

I liked Neil Peart the best when he was into Ayn Rand. I read Anthem and the Fountainhead because of him. That led me to Atlas Shrugged eventually. Rush is smart to avoid overt political messages, which I respect, unlike, say, the Ditsey Twits. It's hard to figure Neil out. He chose to live in LA, which would lead me to believe he's a big lib, but then he's best friends with Trey Parker and Matt Stone, who definitely aren't liberals.

Bill could've asked Neil if he felt things were any different in Canada. Bill also could've asked if short attention spans existed in the world of music, given that RUSH was known for writing 12-minute songs.

On this panel, Neil Peart is a god among men. No one here has even a fraction of Neil's insight and wisdom.

@einarabelc5 One last thing is to look closely at Rush's lyrics. The line in Tom Sawyer (which is all about the individual spirit) describes Neil well. "No his mind is not for rent, to any god or government" sums him up perfectly. Broadly speaking, conservatives want religious authority over the individual and those of the left want government authority over the individual. Peart (and I) would prefer not much of either. So there's my long-winded take. Thanks for commenting!

This was in 1994, way before he was any sort of polarizing figure and before most of the general public even knew who he was. It was more light entertainment than political.

I appreciate your comments but the very fact that someone listens to someone on the radio, watches someone on TV, or reads someone's words doesn't mean that they're being "told what to think" by that person. For Neil, and for people like me, any one component of that input is a very small part of the whole. That phrase is always used in a dismissive way. "You listen to so-and-so and they just tell you what to think", etc. That's just not accurate for most people.

crazy how clear it is this was obviously written WELL before the phenomenon of today when vast swathes of the populace are completely fucking programmed on what to think by the right wing talking points brigade with trump brands on their asses and the poseur in the white house's desperate need to dominate the news cycle every 24 hours before the empty black hole inside consumes him and us...

What's ironic is that the panel is discussing the limited attention spans of our youth, yet when an interesting point is made (such as a book and its derived movie being a different experience), the format of the show is such that they have no more time to explore the idea, or they interrupt the flow to go to a commercial. What has just been demonstrated here is that our media helps create the conditions for short attention spans.

Neil seemed open minded. Definitely understands human nature more than maher. It's not intelligent to berate people based on prejudices. Maher should know this but then again it just shows how unintelligent he really is.

10:16 he asked how much smaller attention spans could possibly get. Well, we made Vine a thing so.....

And to be fair, several of the criticisms of Maher that include "blows dog dicks" and such are over the top, too. I've got my own strong political beliefs but let's please try to keep this just about Peart since that's the whole reason I uploaded it. There are a million other places on the web to shout obscenities at each other. I just wanted to upload this stuff for Rush fans to watch. Thanks a lot, guys! I'm not trying to lecture anybody up but let's try to be civil.
