I have the Elixir 1 and 3. I love the tents but I will say that they are HEAVY! My fiancé and I did an 8 day hike in the French Alps. We could feel the extra kilos...we had 13kg on our backs, everything included. That said, I still like not having to shell out 500-600 bucks on a tent I only use during the summer.

Really excellent and informative video - thank you! For me it was an obvious choice to go for the Elixir 2 - stronger in high winds, more robust construction and materials, more room in the porches etc. The only reason to even consider the Hubba would be if you're an obsessive gram counter, to which I would say get fitter and stronger and save yourself about £170 and get yourself a better tent. I have been incredibly impressed with the Elixir which has stood up to everything the British weather can throw at it with ease and still looks like new after 3 years and dozens of camps.

Thanks for this. Absolutely fantastic video which summarises many of the points I've been researching while I try to make up my mind as to which tent to buy. I was planning on buying the Elixir, then was swayed and was almost about to buy the Hubba instead. Now I'm swinging back towards the Elixir again, as even though it is heavier, it is more durable, roomier and appears to have greater wind resistance. As I'm looking to do some winter camps this seems to tick all the boxes. Having spent hours watching many reviews it's been really helpful to see a side-by-side review like this.

@@Horrorhiker I was very pleased with the MSR Elixir 1. Excellent build quality and attention to detail make it a fantastic 3 season tent. Your comment made me look back at my website and it looks like I never got round to reviewing this tent, something I'll have to remedy. The only down side to it was the fact it pitches inner first, which caused a few issues on some high camps in very bad weather.

    • @Horrorhiker

@@AirdrieRambler Thanks for the reply, that's excellent. I have actually ordered the Elixir 2 now as I saw it at a decent price the other day, but I plan to get the 1 too, a bit later on. Fantastic to hear that you got on so well with it. I'm not too worried with inner first tbh. I used to use only pitch as one tents, but I find that I really like the classic dome design so inner first are loads easier to find, and have no problems just wiping everything with a towel if it gets a bit wet.

@@Ns-vv1yw I just ordered the Hubba. It's main 2 advantages for me was the amount of room you get lying down. I'm 6ft, so on the taller side. It's also propped up at both ends offering extra headroom when sleeping. And it packs away much smaller and lighter, for solo backpacking i'm hoping it'll be great.

I was referring to the internal pockets at either end of the tent where if you fill them with something like a dry bag, or a jacket it will reduce the flow of air. It's not going to make a radical difference, but it will help.

    • @proagencies

@@bluebellcrushedvelvet Inside the tent at either end there are are usually internal pockets. These are for the storage of items to keep things off the floor of the tent. Instead of just placing things like your phone in the pocket fill them with waterproof jackets/Drybags etc to block the wind. Anything will be better than nothing.

It's a fair point, and yes you can compress the Elixir smaller than it appears. The compression sac the Hubba is supplied with does a good job of minimising the space it takes up, and is genuinely a fair bit smaller than the Elixir due to thinner materials.
