    I really like their costumes. The straw face coverings were so different. Fire added to the atmosphere too. Such a special event. Thanks!

    We've pretty much decided to Go North Japan the next time we visit. Apparently an announcement is due imminently so we can't wait. We'll probably go in Winter though so we'll probably miss most of these amazing festivals. But Japan in Winter is amazing too. This was very cool Quinlan, thanks!

    I see a lot of Ainu influence in this festival, and also some major similarities with some Native American rituals. That both populations evolved from the Beringia peoples about 25,000 years ago points to a common thread of cultural transmission, which Native Americans have held in their lore, which is proving to be very reliable.

    Is the name of the place Nishimonai Ainu language? It sounds typically Ainu.
    When more foreign tourists visit Japan, I would like them to visit Tohoku and know about Tokyo and Kyoto are not all of Japan.
    For most of Japanese , the mid summer because of Obon and the end and begging of winger are the most Japanese time in a year.
    Many foreign tourists guidebooks don’t recommend to visit Japan in the mid summer but visiting Japanese traditional festival in mid summer tells them why we love summer in spite of the heat and humidity

    • @GoNorthJapan
      @GoNorthJapan  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure, but according to Japanese wikipedia, Nishimonai is commonly thought to be derived from the Ainu language, though there are various theories...
      I agree! I'm doing my best to try to inspire many other to visit Tohoku! It's not that bad in the summer up here, and the hottest season is really short.

    Did you ever read "Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan" (1894) by Lafcadio Hearn? Lots of mythology and cultural exploration. One of my favorite books. In he describes a dance scene and while not this type it is very surreal.

    Not really anything like this in NA. Only place I've seen it, Japanese festivals in areas where there is a decent number of Japanese.

    What is that hat called the one that look like a half circle, its really pretty. Also nice video, I enjoy this kind of content!

  • @VerhoevenSimon
    @VerhoevenSimon ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That looks quite interesting. Is there a difference meaning wise between the straw hat types, and the other variety?

    • @GoNorthJapan
      @GoNorthJapan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! There is a difference! I found a few sites that explain the names of the costumes. I thought about memorizing it and talking about it in the video, but didn't have time. Info here:

    this is extremely interesting to me, thank you for the video. can you maybe give the name of the chant/song or translate the lyrics?

    • @GoNorthJapan
      @GoNorthJapan  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah- it is a really interesting song. There seem to be a number of puns and low brow jokes spun into it. Some parts repeat, but there were so many verses as the dance it self continued for hours. I'm sorry but I am just swamped with work right now, and didn't make a full recording, so the translating the lyrics is beyond me. In terms of the name, it would just by the festival music for the Nishimonai Bon Odori... I don't think there is a proper name for it beyond that.
      Oh- google saves the day! Here's what I found:

      @@GoNorthJapan i understand! thank you :) the Ainu culture and other old world traditions are extremlely interesting to look at in the concept of comparitive mythologoy, or the end of the ice age by "fire". these symbols are subtle and almost unrecognizable, surely not from a google translation, but still some tidbits - besides all of that, just the visuals and sound are amazing! Enjoy the Taurids meteor showers ;)

    Japanese Samba. A little repetitive for my taste.
