  • Can you use a tablet to edit video with Davinci Resolve? In this video we compare the iPad Pro with Surface Pro 9 to see whether Intel has caught up with Apple Silicon for video work.
Yes, it's probably a bit silly to do serious 4K video editing tests with tablets, but we all know that Apple's M1 and M2 chips have the ability, and now that Davinci Resolve is available for iPad... how does it compare to a similar tablet featuring Intel's i7-1255U?

I bought the surface pro a year ago so I could use the Adobe CS suite while 'on the go'. I've been very pleased with the performance.
I watched and enjoyed many of your videos and was very close to buying the M1 notebook. But for me, staying with Windows made more sense.
Glad to see you realize the value of a Surface pro. It's the nicest Windows machine I've used.
However, I'm surprised you didn't note the heat. Mine gets pretty hot using Premier pro.. and I think it slows down processing at high heat. I haven't done tests but it just seems like it.

For some reason, this video was incredibly difficult to understand. So in summary M1 beat the practical pants of the Surface? Spending 2K USD on the surface + eGpu isn't worth it for short timlines and renders that clock in minutes?

    • @ConstantGeekery
      @ConstantGeekery  ปีที่แล้ว +3

It’s a bit of fun that shows off the M1’s optimisation for video editing workflows. I tried to explain the process clearly, and as I said, I certainly don’t advocate a tablet for serious video editing, nor pairing a Surface Pro with an eGPU generally. But there are some takeaways:
      1. M1 & M2 also feature in Macs and the i7-1255U is available in other laptops, so from that perspective the comparison may be useful for some.
      2. There are tasks where the i7 beats the M1 and M2 chips. Benchmarks and single-focus tests like this don’t paint the complete picture.
      3. eGPU offers benefits only in certain specific scenarios, and unless you have such a scenario, it’s rarely a good value proposition.

Another great video. It's disappointing Apple hasn't released its own Pro Apps on iPad but I think the Pro/Max/Ultra platforms are its Pro App target. Just to note that video has been slow coming, 3D is even further away but image editing has been better on an iPad for some time with Affinity, Adobe & even Pixelmator products. Sketching/art is an iPad-first sector so iPads (if not tablets in general) moved beyond consumption devices years ago.
On Intel, I'm not convinced they have stepped up. The tested chip follows a marketing-centric design; a few hugely turbo boosted 'performance' cores + tons of not-so-efficiency cores + huge SIMDs = best of both worlds? Only for benchmarks simulating edge cases, not real workloads.
I do like the idea of devices docking with additional external hardware depending on the use case & though Apple should have a dedicated graphics card - for their Studio Display.

    • @andyH_England

Concerning Apple releasing their pro apps, I believe they have agreed with third-party devs to not tread on their toes. So no FCP, which means DV Resolve was able to be developed knowing that it would not be usurped by an FCP iPad edition. This is great business management, as you want to support devs, so they can support iPadOS. Something sadly, many comments on here do not understand. Just use DV Resolve; it will be a learning curve, but it is a solid editor that is well-optimised.

@@andyH_England nice idea but I take it you're not familiar with the term "sherlocking". I think Apple wants to target/preserve their Mac market base and by aiming above the baseline. This was one of the most ejoyable videos in a while! Really love it. It shows how much the M1 iPad could do if developers ported their desktop apps to it... Mine is mainly issed for youtube and streaming, that's why I still use the 2018 just as much as the M1... And even with Lumafusion there is not much difference in export times, the main difference is reloads due to RAM. I really hope more apps will come, I am waiting for a pro music app that is porting their full version to iPad, they are still testing, but should arrive soon. Entertaining video. I totally agree with your comments that Apple Silicon has driven healthy competition. I find my 12.9-inch M1 iPad Pro a brilliant device that is made totally frustrating to use due to iPad OS. I do not like iPad OS's wall garden or overly complex touch gestures that the OS often misinterprets. For me, the touch interface on Windows 11 and Chrome OS laptops / 2 in 1s is about right. I would be extremely happy with Mac OS on an iPad Pro (large screen). When I was watching your video, I was amazed by the M1 iPad Pro's performance and the fact that it didn't need a PSU connected to sustain that performance, but also thinking one pro app doesn't make for a pro device! I would still select the Surface Pro 9 over an M series iPad Pro because overall it is a more capable computing device where you are free to install any apps you wish. Unfortunately, Apple Silicon is currently wasted on Apple, which is why I hope Nuvia processors or MediaTek et al drive further changes in the computing world.

I think it's relevant as a portable/convertible tablet PC. Microsoft have released the SP10 "for Business", which isn't much different. It has a Meteor Lake CPU with an NPU for AI features like co-pilot. I expect the consumer version of the SP10 will be the same, but we might also get one running Qualcomm's Snapdragon X. If so, that will certainly narrow the performance and thermal gap to the iPad.
I don't use my Surface Pro for particularly heavy workloads, as I'm fortunate to have other more powerful machines for that, but on the occasions when I have pushed it, I wouldn't say it was particularly noisy. Of course, it's x86 and if you work it hard, it will run the fans and get hot. Some years ago I used a SP4 as my main machine, and that would spin the fans constantly - this one doesn't do that.
I've used this primarily for office tasks and note taking. It's a great all-rounder and I find the form factor very useful.

I have Surface pro 9, ipad pro M2 and Macbook Pro M1.
My take is this (assuming you don’t care about OS):
    - do you just need a strong tablet? Buy ipad pro
    - do you need workhorse laptop? Buy macbook pro
    - do you need just one portable device that is okyish laptop and can be also used as a tablet? Buy surface pro
Surface pro isn’t really better in anything compared to the apple products but it can be reasonably well used as both a laptop (2/3) and a tablet (1/3)
