I`ve lived in Tokyo for 10 years now and generally I`d say living here can be super cheap or super expensive. It all depends on how willing you are to shop around and be smart about how you spend your money. If you go out to eat all the time and aren`t picky about were you eat or what places you go to hangout at you can easily find yourself dropping over a 10,000 yen a night without much effort.
Going out with friends can often be the easiest way to overspend.
As a quick example, you could go to a bar and pay over 4000 yen for a few drinks and snacks (probably 2 to 3 times that if you end up being brought something like a host bar), or you could go have a picnic under the sakura trees with food and drinks you bought from the supermarket for under 1000.
very good advice. thank you
So 10000 yen is 20 bucks in USA money?
nope. 10,000 yen is about $100 USD
Wtf? Alright.
10,000 is 100 dollars
1,000 is 10 dollars
Your hamster is the cutest little ball of fluff I have ever seen!!!
Hampstera are a universal language for adorable (≧▽≦)
This may not be expensive for American people or any other economically developed countries, but for small European countries on the Balcans it's not cheap at all. Here in Belgrade, which is the capitol of Serbia, you can rent a one room apartment from 150 euros a month, all your bills for a moth in this apartment are around 100e, more or less, your cell phone bill is around 10e, and you can eat a big hamburger for 2e from the street fast food. But when you work for a pay of 350e a month, even that is expensive. We all have different standards. 1 euro = 1,25 dollar
i love how all of those drinks are under one dollar but in the US its like $2 for one drink
I transferred to a university here :) They helped me out with finding an apartment. Finding teaching jobs are very easy!
screw this im moving to japan now !!!
Then wait for me because I'm coming with you!
musiclover6842 let's go !! seriously though some of my friends are in Japan on a study abroad trip over there and they said they don't wanna come back
Wait take me too guuuuurl!!!
Iko iko let'd go then ! Xp
Kira Holemon wanna take a stranger you? XD
Cheaper than USA...In my opinion of course ^~^///
No one asked for your opinion
+PK Bitchslap no one had to ask for his opinion for him to state it. lolz
WatchMeLiveAndStuff Welcome to the internet :)
+PK Bitchslap ʕ·͡ᴥ·ʔ no one asked you to comment on this post
BunniesAtHome No one asked for your reply :P
Guys you think japan is expensive..try sydney australia...its crazy.
+bunniewood omg yes the average price for a house has gone up to $1 million dollars... :(
+bunniewood and Norway ._.'
and uk
I've been to England, and it was waay cheaper than Norway! In Norway a beer in a pub costs 9$.. (80kr) it was not that expensive in England XD
MarieLyster that's because our currncy is worth about 1.5 of the dollar, so prices seem lower, but it's just that the value of the pound is higher. Also, it's more living costs. A one bedroom apartment in London will cost you near to £1000 pounds a month, that's hunt under $1500 a month
my rent there for a month will cost as much as my rent here for a week. i'm sold.
Wow, it actually costs more to live here in the UK than in Japan.
hahaha you guys are funny
try London UK if you think japan is expensive
Lol in london a tiny little house with 2-3 bedrooms can cost £300-400 thousand
ikr im from london
Sharla,i think what you do on these videos are REALLY helpful....MANY MANY THX !
that's a GREAT price especially the phone bill. whats the job market like tho? like the minimum wage, how easy is it 2 find one. & what is there to do in japan? lol. its not a problem if I can just use my savings for a while but long term concerns me. im going for IT in school & just worried that I cant find work there :(
nice question i been looking for videos about that but i cant find any
I think the absolute minimum wage in japan (considering 8 hours of work every weekday in a 4 week month) is 103,200 yen?
I computed this based on the region in japan with the lowest minimum hourly salary.
www.mhlw.go.jp/stf/seisakunitsuite/bunya/koyou_roudou/roudoukijun/minimumichiran/index.html
Einhard Morales Wow. In NZ, minimum is $14.50NZD = ¥1300 and even Australia has a higher minimum wage than us.
Japan sounds like paradise. :')
Thanks :D Welcome to my channel~
So many people thinking fruits are too expensive in Japan. But these expensive fruits are for gift. We also have cheap fruits at supermarket. My family buy a 1kg box of Mandarin oranges $10-15. There is $100 for a mango but also there is $1 for a mango.
You forgot to tell us about one of the most important things!! TRAVEL EXPENSES!!!! What are they like?? Your average travel cost per month?
I don't travel so I wouldn't know, sorry. I bike/walk everywhere. Taking the train is usually between 150~500yen per trip if you stay within Tokyo.
for a local train in tokyo it can be anywhere from 180yen to 880yen (about $2-$8) for a one way ticket. You can get a month trainline pass between 2 certain stations which i think is the better and cheaper option because you pay a certain amount and you can travel as many times as you want between tho two stations and any stations can come inbetween them. this card averages at about 5,000yen per month which is about $50. bus tickets are about the same price as local train tickets.
note that the shinkansen tickets can go to like $1k depending on where you are going to and from but are usually about $100-200 for a medium journey, lets say tokyo to hiroshima or smth
Much cheaper than Australia, it costs me like $1000 a month for rent. I'd love to live in Japan but the language would take me years to learn :(
Hey hey! You don't HAVE to learn the language! You can get by, I'm 99.99% sure! To learn more, you should check out gimmeaflakeman' s video called 'Why you shouldn't learn Japanese"! Gimmeaflakeman lives in Japan as a gaijin and has very useful and insightful tips for people planning on moving to or visiting Japan. I don't mean to rudely promote his videos on this channel but I think it would help you with this wish to come to Japan!
Cheaper than the UK as well.
***** No, blame the ridiculous wages people make for simple jobs. Why does someone working in a grocery store need to make $20/hr? I worked in a grocery store making $8/hr in the US and could get by on that because prices were also a LOT cheaper in the US than here in Australia. Higher wages mean businesses have to charge more to cover for expenses. I find that prices here are proportionate to the wages. The wages here are about 2.5 times higher than in the US and so are the prices of about everything.
I live in Australia and my rent is $300 a week, that's $1200 a month! I see prices shows in the video and can't help but be shocked, since average rent these days (where I live) is $250+.
But I'm sure wages are also different in both countries, so that would factor to how different it actually is. Since apparently we get paid fairly well here in Australia.
I live in Australia and my rent is $3000 dollars a month. I am moving to Japan for 5 Year for work and i know the language quite well. I can't wait to move over there.
Hey Sharla! Thank you for the nice video! I am going to study in Japan next year and your videos have been a great help. I though fruit was too expensive there, I'm glad you proved it wrong : ) keep up the good work!
Awww, you have a hamster! It's so cute and fluffy! :) This is a really helpful video, you should make more like it talking about different things. Stuff like body soap, make up, dish soap, make up remover, other personal hygiene items, other house hold items, food for your pets, more types of food and drinks, etc. :)
Mind blown..
So I could save a little and go there for a visit now!
Oh wait.. prices for hotels might be worse?
Alexander Carneal Yeah prices for hotels are rather high. The hotel chain I like the most is APA hotels, maybe check them out. But airbnb is also an option!!
I would recommend hostels if you are used to that kind of thing as well :)
Thanks Sharla in Japan . This was very helpful. Are monthly food and transportation expensive in Tokyo?
+q I don't think transportation is expensive-- unless you take a taxi all the time....
I noticed you had English textbooks for Japanese students?? Are you (or did you happen to) be involved with the JET program?! I'm applying this year and just found your TH-cam channel, will definitely we watching your videos! :D
+Spencer Brown No I've never been a part of any of those teaching programs, I just worked at a bunch of random schools that I applied for myself :) Oh and welcome to my channel :D Good luck with your ALT application!!!
+Sharla in Japan hay how much is your average cost of food (per month)?
Spencer Brown I hope to apply to JET one day too, I hope you get in! 😊
Another factor to consider, especially in Tokyo or any major city, you can totally get by without a car. Their public transit system is amazing!
This was super helpful. Side note, your eye makeup is beautiful. 💖
What if it turned out that those eyedrops really were tobasco? Lol
Living in Japan is actually pretty cheap
I actually thought living in Japan would be far more expensive. I'm from the US. But my girlfriend and I are traveling and living around the world. We're currently in Guatemala. Which is an awesome country with great culture and really friendly people. The food is amazing, too. We'll probably be here until about 2018...hopefully by then I'll finally have Spanish down.
Though being here for the year I've been here so far has taught me far more Spanish than I ever learned in high school. I can hold really basic conversations right now, which helps keep me moving, and I can communicate in an emergency. But I can't hold deeper conversations, so it has kept me from getting to know people and make friends. That'll change, I imagine.
But we've been looking at places to go to next. We're visiting Canada in November for a work conference I'll be speaking at, and we want to visit Iceland sometime next year. As for *living*, she's currently looking at Ireland. We've both been looking at Germany as well. I really want to visit Japan, though. I have always wanted to visit Japan; since I was very young, that was something I said I would most certainly do. She'd like to visit, but is very "meh" about the idea of living there. If she doesn't want to in the end, I'm okay with that. But our rule to ourselves after we moved to Guatemala and realized it's not even remotely as rundown and dangerous as people say, is that we would not rule a place out until we have visited it. Working in an industry where I have to meet people (sometimes face-to-face) from all around the world has taught me that a lot of what people say online and in the US (especially from those who never travel) is bullshit.
The 1st video that got me loving Sharla in Japan!!! ;3
What do you need to be qualified to teach english in Japan? I'm considering doing this.
Alexandria Bride A bachelor's degree in anything, and to be a native english speaker :)
Ok thanks :) May I ask what you got a degree in?
Mady Rose there are various ways in working or living in japan besides teaching. Well if that's your passion go for it.
Sharla in Japan what bachelor degree do you have? Do you need any certification?
Marco Ronchetti I know your not asking me, any bachelors degree can make you teach in Japan, you can have a degree in Riding horses and still teach in japan. all you need is a degree.
Try living in Sydney Australia XD
everything is so cheap over there!!
The money is not an issue here. it is the language and fitting in into a very amazing yet very complex culture. There in lies the challenge for most foreigners. it is really about observing Japanese people, reading on their cultural nuances and asking Japanese friends about it. After that it's a pretty peaceful life.
For those who were confused like me, the prices written are in Canadian dollars, in American dollars it would be 1 dollar or 10 cents less if it's something under a dollar. Example: $0.82 for the qtips in american dollars its $0.72
Omg i want to live in Japan!!! 😍😱
Omg lol she just randomly bought a hamster
Yeah lots of the stores are more expensive, Donkihote seems like a good place to buy drinks for example :) Just need to know where to shop.
I would live to see another video like this with prices of stuff. It's so interesting for some reason!
Its cheap for western but not for 3rd world countries
compared to Brazil that is really cheap;
Yeah it blew my mind when I saw the cost of the xbox one and ps4 in Brazil.
I've saw few comments saying that Japanese fruits are expensive but actually it's not. There is an expensive fruits but that's because it is a high-class things. Also, when we buy things in shopping street which we call "Syoutengai," normally we can get things cheaper than buying in supermarkets. Supermarkets are convenience because we can get every things we want in one shop but it's normally a bit more expensive when we compare it with the shops in the shopping street.
I'm really enjoying your videos..I've watched a few and find them informative and enjoyable to watch. I am now a new subcriber👍😊
Ikr
how much is the average salari per month?
Now that IS the question.
MatthewT
well for English teachers its anywhere around 200k-350k yen per month. if your an university teacher its even a lot more.
could you exchange your American money for yen?
Yes at the federal exchange.
+Izaiah Lail Foreign^^
Love the video and the little song you used!! Lol. And the special guest appearance by the Hamster :-))
Using the actual phone is expensive, it's free between users of the same company, but if I call someone else it's like 20cents a minute. Internet/texting is unlimited.
like tell us what is the average pay , and what is the mini pay and how much u make and how big is ur flat then i can know how expensive is japan
+koko pariz ブルーワーカーで300万円から400万円かな~ 3 million yen to 4 million yen in the blue worker(Annual income)
Nori Tam tnx so its 2700 $ per month
compared to norway this is soooo cheap, wow
She is doing pretty fine to save money.
The prices she mentioned are almost ones in Wal mart.
Regular vending machine sells a bottele of tea at USD1.5.
USA, North Louisiana:
For rent where I live, a 2 bedroom 1 bathroom apartment is $600 a month.
I live in a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, 2 living room (one with fireplace) house. Its $850 a month
Milk is $4.50 per gallon, Gas is $3 per gallon.
Phone bill is $160 a month (For all 4 phones - unlimited talk and text, 10GB of data to share)
Water + Electricity together is $200-$300
Cost of a computer at walmart is $399 - $1000 depending on the amount of ram and core count.
An average television for people is a 40" VIZIO, which is $400 at walmart
Internet bill is $45 a month (Suddenlink) (30MBPS Down, 5MBPS Up plan)
Cable + Internet combined = $180 (We have basic cable with HBO and all of the sports channels added)
Can't....handle.....TOO MUCH KAWAIII
cheaper than holland ;O
Holland is one of the most liberal countries in the world. It costs lots of tax money to support that type of government. When people depend on government so much they lose so much of their own money, opportunity and freedom.
Dave Stang Yea right...then how 'come they have higher income, better medical care, better access to education, better public schools and a higher standard of living..and what "freedoms" do Americans have that they don't? The freedom to having no medical care..to have crappy schools, or low paying jobs?
And maybe you haven't noticed..the US is rapidly turning into a Police state. 2 million behind bars, NSA spying....
Dave Stang we havent lost anything. I wouldn't choose to live in any other country and Holland isn't even my country of origin. Its awesome and I'm happy to pay taxes if they are used well!
Igabella
Don't bother..logic and facts mean little to these Teabilly types
$600 US A MONTH! FUCK AMERICA, IM GOING ROUGE
+Kanjiru Sama rouge? you mean rogue? XD
+Minyadagniriel Yes, simple typo but thanks lol its baffling how cheep/affordable living in another country could be though. 700 US$ a month? That's some what of a steal considering how much your bills and daily necessities would cost. I would definitely go rogue for that. This country is becoming a pile of shit that could only get stinkier to be honest...
Yup, that sounds familiar :( I pay almost $900 a month for 800 square feet and bills are ridiculous. Electric averages $150-200 and then there's the cars...food... >
Yup, I have a couple friends who live in one-room/studio apartments and they always end up spending more than 1.4k a month. Its way too expensive here dude...
As long as its affordable I could care less. The neighborhood is questionable though. It depends on the area.
much cheaper than switzerland.... ;)
Thanks to your liberal government taxes and prices are sky high! Congratulations!
Dave Stang
Hey idiot..they also have free medical care, free college education, public transportation that is second to none, a living minimum wage..THEIR tax dollars going toward THEIR benefit!
free medical care in switzerland? nope. the college is very expensive too.
ventrue87 You are right-it isn't fre. It is paid for by their taxes, as is their medical care. Perhaps if you would get out of the trailer park more, you would know this.
Hi, I am moving to Yokohama in the next four weeks. I have found that food is very reasonable, especially cooked prepared in the department stores. In Yokohama if you live near the train stations, (I am about 2 min from one) the rent is much higher. Utilities are a lot higher than she quoted and so are the cell phones. (It depends on what you want) Transportation by train or bus is average and she is correct about jobs. The unemployment is below 4% and English teaching jobs are everywhere
I love how the japanese make their packaging. it makes me want to buy everything
waaaaay cheaper than Canada
Canadian dollar is worth less than american
+Gena St. Denis yea I know but living in Japan is still cheaper
you are so beautiful!
Your taste in music is great, every vid should have this background music!
One of your friends also made a video saying that moving to Japan was so expensive because you have to pay to have pets, also give like a months rent as a gift to the landlord, pay like 3 months rent just to buy the apartment because they insist on ''helping'' you buy it and bring you to see the apartment. Was this also true with you when you got you're apartment?
Small comparison of cost of my living as just a student in Australia. Rent: $160/week for a bedroom (university accommodation $180-300/week), phone $40/month, $1000/year for car registration, that exact bottle of green tea $6-7 here. Ice cream for one scoop $4.50-10+. The bread would be $4-5, handbag easily $60+. I really am in the wrong country. ☺️ I heard that Sydney Australia there are actual beds in shared rooms rented for $300+ because of the housing crisis. 😐
Hi, I'm planning to go for a 1-month trip around Japan next year and your video was helpful regarding food and drinks. Thanks!
WHAAAAT , it's so cheap in Japan compared to where I live. Here in Canada the rent starts at 800$ and it's for crappy/ugly apartments and the phone bills are also more expensive .
***** You are so right! i'm going to live in japan i think ... :3
Fresh food in Japan(fruits, vegetables, meat) are very expensive. Everything is imported pretty much so if it's hard to shove in a shipping container it's going to be expensive.
Petrol prices are slightly higher than Australia's and rents are okay but remember what you are getting in Japan for an apartment is like a 1 bedroom apartment in Australia with a ensuite.
OMG! Your hamster is the cutest thing I have ever seen!!!
Cost of housing in the US varies a lot. If you're looking at San Francisco or New York, it's crazy: you could spend $4000 rent for an apartment. Small cities a lot less, maybe $700 for a one-bedroom apartment. Sharla's grocery and shampoo prices looked about the same as you would pay in any WalMart in the US. I guess when you live there, you have time to scout for stores where the natives shop and prices are reasonable, whereas tourists are going to pay tourist prices. That's probably how it works everywhere, not just Japan.
thank you so much for putting this video up, its helped loads :3
I guess when people say it's expensive in Japan, they haven't been to Scandinavia.
I'm really surprised at how cheap your rent is! I lived in Nerima-ku during exchange in a small apartment located near a subway station (平和台駅)and it would take me around 10 minutes to get to Ikebukuro or 20 minutes to Shinjuku by metro! Nerima-ku isn't even that great of an area and my rent was approximately 65,000 ($750 in 2012) yen a month for 175 square feet! This included a mini kitchen by the foot of my bed, an extremely small desk, and my own bathroom/shower.
Thanks so much for the video. I live in San Francisco and always thought the price of living in Japan would be similar. In Tokyo, maybe it is similar (or more), but based on your video, it is remarkably cheaper! For example one of the teas you showed cost HALF of what I pay for the same kind here. Your rent, phone bill and others are also hugely lower. Very informative.
Japan can be both affordable and very expensive depending on where you shop and the quality of the items. The cost of living doesn't sound so bad but I was there just a couple months ago and being there as a tourist from America, I found it to be a bit more on the expensive side. But as mentioned, it depends on what and where you shop. My husband and I spent as little as 400yen for a very good bowl of food that filled us up but we've also had the pleasure of spending 6000yen for about 10 little sticks of grilled teriyaki meat (it was worth it coz it was so yummy), lol. I miss it there and can't wait to come back!
Coming from Australia (one of the most expensive countries in the world), Japan's prices amazed me! They were so reasonable! Even their Made in China products were better quality that Australia's Made in China products and were heaps cheaper!
3:22 cuteness explosion!!
creature comforts seem to be the expensive portion, where as food and necessary items for living are where the cost dips.
I just lost it with the Hamster. LOL "YOU BOUGHT A HAMSTER FOR $11?!"
I know I'm a couple years late in this but wow... many of those similar items are actually cheaper than in the United States. For a bottle of tea, I've never seen any for less than a dollar. Fruits and Veggies always cost at least a dollar a pound, so if you have more they add up. Her apt and utilities are even cheaper than some of the poorest states. $477 in the US is almost unheard of unless you want to live in a bad neighborhood or in a trailer park out in the middle of nowhere. Phone is about the same, but phone bill $32? Either she has a pretty cheap plan or they just don't charge for much. US, average phone bill is near $100. Utilities, even if you try to conserve here in the US you can expect to pay at least $50-60 a month in electric, but gas here is cheap during the hotter days unless you cook and use a lot of hot water.
Then the clothes, not sure if it's name brand or not but I could easily see those novelty items cost far more at some store in the mall or even at Walmart. It's kind of starting to make me frustrated right now, haha.
I am curious about other things like yearly taxes, health insurance, etc. Also communing for people who have jobs. Seems people in Tokyo don't have cars and just walk everywhere.
I live in Arizona, it's not as atrocious as California or New York, but I can see how it can be simple to live in Japan if you apply yourself (and find stable work). I live in a somewhat smaller city and average rent around here has been creeping up to or past $600/mo for an average apartment. Phoenix is almost double that.
Most of my classes right now are in Japanese, but they do have some English classes!
I cant wait to live in japan~ ive been studying japanese at school since year 8 and after taking it for my HSC and 3 more years after that i'll hopefully be living their too. I went there last year for 2 weeks and i just fell in love~
I stay in Osaka sometimes with my bf and his family, and it is really amazing how cheap everything is! In Australia convenient stores are NOT convenient. XD
I love the fact that there are so many vending machines around with $1 drinks. So handy when you're out of drinks in the house. XD
I wish you all so much prosperity..., I bet it's hard sometimes being on the other side of the world from your family... But you're strong I can see it.
Not sure never worked a min wage job but I think it's around 800yen? ($8) Depends on the area though. In the city 1000yen is more common.
477? Thats amazing. Where I live a studio can run 1100-1500, so this is quite the glimmer of hope for me. Great informative video
Thanks for this video! It's amazing, prices are just about the exact same here in Texas.. actually they're a little better.
Good and informative video, Sharla! Would love to see a video of the cost of living in Japan for two people or a couple. ^^
Great video (that music in the background will neve get out of my head though xD)!
Really informative- living in japan is a dream of mine and this has given me lots of information about getting there :3
I was thinking about studying in Japan, so... let's hope the eonomy doesn't change too much in a year or two :P
An Asian man that gives massages in my local mall gave me those exact eye drops same packaging and everything. I remember him saying it would help so much with my tired eyes and When I put them in I was like "ahhhhh, whattt, owwww" lol they really do burn!
Thanks for the informative video. The hamster was a nice touch.
Yeah I've heard Australia is pretty expensive, but salaries are also a lot higher I'm guessing?
For a small one bedroom apartment here in Hawaii is at least $1,200... and these apartments are so old and ghetto. It's seriously overcrowded here and there's very little things to buy under .99 cents. Lots of locals and natives are moving to the mainland where it's cheaper because they can't feed their families, even with a good paying job. It's so sad :(
It is only expensive if you live in the baller areas of Tokyo/Osaka/Kyoto. Only big things that get me, are things like milk, tempurpedic pillows, and other odd stuff. Everything else is more or less on par with the US
can you do another video like this? i like seeing all of the prices of different things there!
depends. If you teach through a dispatch company( and thats not REALLY teaching) the salaray can range from 150000yen a month to 250000 yen( if you are a JET). But it also depends on what prefecture you are in and how close to Tokyo you are.
I thought this was amazingly relevant and a good video that helped me get an idea of the cost of things thank you
I am going to live in Japan. First I need to finish college, learn Japanese. After that, I will find a job and move out there, hopefully in that order. Moving out there will be difficult to explain to my parents if I don't have a job waiting.
Moral of the story, if you are an able-bodied young adult with a willingness to learn the language and culture, you can do this!!
That's cheaper than living here! Shared housing is about £300 or more a month. To live in a flat/apartment on your own is about £600 a month for a one bedroom, and that's just the rent!
It's still expensive. Here at the north of México rent for a really small appartment can be from 130 US, and sometimes you can rent a house for that (but it might be placed at a very weird neighborhood). And the north of México is the most expensive part of the country. So to my country's standards, yes, Japan is expensive.
I have lots of Hungarian friends that study Japanese at Hungarian universities! I'm sure it is possible!
Thanks for this video! I'm moving to Japan next March and will be staying in Nakano-ku. I found this really helpful, especially utility prices and phone prices etc
Hi Sarah, you going there to study?or by yourself?most people go there cuz of work it seems..
geotjimal
Hiya! I'm moving to Tokyo with my partner to work for a private school (so glad I'm not moving alone, even planning it has been super stressful at times!). In my spare time I hope to go to Japanese lessons to improve, so I guess I'll be studying too in that sense :)
I love that handbag so much
It will comfortably hold about $1000 dollars worth of hamsters(106,393y).
I live in Japan now, and the yen to dollar rate is awesome right now. I recently spend 27,500 yen at a store and looked at my bank statement and that converted to 225$.
