As a nurse and a mother, I am impressed that you have the ability and training to administer an epidural to a cow. Plus all the other medical procedures you do. Impressive!
When my Dad was young they didn't have a vet close so grandpa done it all. He get called to help other farmers to even after he moved to town he got calls. I remember going with him when he was in his 70's to check on a farmers cow. Great video. You'll stay safe and God bless
Hi Mike from West Germany, as farmer son coming from a dairy breeding farm, I have to say you and your wife doing excellent to explain ranching work and needs of ranching-farming, really well done....my full respect for this.... I myself doing only small scale farming myself but love to work with the animals and the soil-crops myself as well , here in Germany many hard working farmers under critics and pressure by consumers who dont know so much anymore by farming, your work is a good example to bring consumers and rancher - farmer more close together and it will raise the understanding of each other.... God bless you , your family and your work Peter from the Rhineland 😃
It's going to be fun. When i was very young us kids would feed the calfs milk from a bucket with a teet on it. They were drop calfs , some would dye but most would live.He would keep a few of the best to breed and start a herd. After a few years he built up a good herd.He bought the drop calfs for $20 ea. I still have the bucket. I had a great childhood. Thanks for video.
Mike I always get excited when I see one of your videos get posted!! It’s like a mini movie pretty awesome you guys are doing A great job with the channel!! You give a lot of information on your videos keep up the great work!!!
Fantastic! You cared to learn more about caring for your cattle, and learned enough to be called by a Vet once in a while for help. The births are amazing. The Record Book can also be known as a Cattle Tally Book to keep track of cattle, range conditions, water sources, etc.
Mike great video as always. Calving season is well under way across cattle country. Many people have sure had a rough year and we will see the impact for months and years to come. Hope all goes good during your calving season! Its always good to have all the tools needed in one bag!
Good video, good explanation of the items in the bags you carry during calving season. You have taken a lot of pressure from the ranch by being able to do some of the vet work. That shows what a good steward you are of your animals!!!
Being able to do a lot of your own vet work can make a huge difference in who survives and who doesn't in a herd. We give all newborn calves a 1 ml shot of Multimin 90 and 10 cc's of Ag Bac drench from Gro Tec. This is like Red Bull to them, they spring up and nurse within minutes, aggressively at that.
I have the faith that you guys will have an amazing calving season, you folks are such good people and you all are sharing this with all of us. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, and God bless.
With calf #1 on the ground and moving about Mike, and a bit of gentle weather, seems like a successful beginning to the 2019 version of Our Wyoming Life! Rest is tough for a while, so grab a few zzzs when time is available -Bob...
Welcome to the Calving Season. Great work and really appreciate that you shared that you have learned ways to help and be there during this process. Get some rest.
Great video! We've seen nearly everything you described out on our operation. The contracted tendons on the calves can be a challenge, but they will usually work it out with some TLC and selenium and be perfectly normal. Pat yourself on the back for getting through calving this year, it's been a tough one.
Mike I recommend getting a calf catcher that attaches to any utv or atv to keep you from getting ran over by those overprotective mommas and being able to still do what you need to to the calf
Hi again! You're off to a good start Mike and the weather isn't too bad yay! A thermos of hot coffee will help keep you warm and motivated to the last calf and everyone in between! Sure do hope there won't be many surprises and tough nights ahead for you this season. One time in life when boring is great!! Positive thoughts and prayers for you all during this time! Hang in there Mike and don't forget that coffee lol! Til next calf...
Should have me there.. I never sleep as Im up all night every night most all my life... Mike you sleep and I'll take the nights, See its who I am... May you have a easy year and lots of sleep... Good luck!
Its been a fast melt here over the past week or so. Went from blizzards to 60 degrees. Reservoirs are nice and full and I'm sure the warmth is coming you way too . Thanks - MIke
Great video Mike congratulations on the first caf of the year 2019 that is a pretty little red one time for some sleepless nights be safe get plenty of rest
Ya, let the babies start coming, n ur sleeping hrs get less n less lol. Ur a great rancher. N aww the lil one is so cute.. good luck with calfing season..
Absolutely awesome channel !!!! Wish your videos were a lot longer ! 😂 !! Thank you for all your hard work ( wife too ) very much appreciated !!!!!!! Can’t wait for next video 😀
No sure what you are talking about Tony. Our videos have always been 10 to 15 minutes long. Its what I have time to do and still put out 3 videos per week. Thanks for speaking for us. The longer videos are the livestreams of branding and whatnot. Thanks again - Mike
Thank you very much JR. I wish I could go longer sometimes. Lots of info to get out, unfortunately I still have to work and I do all my editing at night after the kids go to bed and I still have to sleep sometime too :) Thanks again and thanks for watching - Mike
Our Wyoming Life , Thank you Mike!!! Kinda wish I could turn on discovery channel and watch your show !! 👍🏻 But they would change it and it wouldn’t be authentic like it is now !!! Keep up the great work and Thank you for your time and videos!!!
Yeah it's always nice to see little baby calves being born when you have to help, or just to see if she can do it herself, but just having baby calves regardless they are cute and funny to watch when they run and play...lol but one thing I am wundering about, is why don't you have your cows in a somewhat smaller pan especially if you can just for the ones that shows the closer sings, so you won't have to travel the whole pasture just to fine a head or two. Where your more important ones are up close but that's my opinion I guess. So inerways good video, good luck with your calving season.
Cows that are confined during calving have calves that are more likely to get sick. By letting them have a bit larger area the moms instincts can be put to work and she will choose a place to have her calf and keep it safe, thanks -Mike
Our Wyoming Life well I was just saying cuz it does look like you have to cover a big area just to fine a cow or two. so that's why I thought of that if that's what you don't do, cuz I know some farmers who don't. but inerways thanks for replying back to me, and again have fun calving..lol
No problem, it can make more work and we have tried locking them in during calving. Just seemed to cause more issues than it was worth. Thanks again - Mike
Thought you might enjoy this when you have a minute between calf's - In New Zealand we have a TV program called Country Calendar which is now available on youtube - here is a few on what we as Kiwi's have been doing over the last few years including crossing the Wagyu with Angus and grass fed them, then exported the meat around the world including into the USA - We get very little snow and our cows are feed grass all year in most area's we very rarely if ever give grain - We now as a trial to mowing the paddocks when the cows are finished which spreads out the muck (cow poo) we are trying to make what we call teenage grass not to short not to tall as we want the natural sugar content in the grass to be high - we then if the paddock is going to be left empty for 3-4 months over sow it with grass seed on top of the spread cow poo we rotate paddocks over years to keep them in good order - you might enjoy some of these Country Calendar programs - it has been around for 40 odd years showing Kiwi families and farming different things th-cam.com/users/results?search_query=country+Calandar+2018+Wagyu enjoy
