Calving Season: You Never Know what'll happen

  • We had a cow that birthed her twins pre-maturely in a previous to this video. Luckily, one of our friends has an old cow that had a calf that she was not going to be able to support, so we were able to give this mother a calf and keep her on the farm. Also dad dumped hay in the feed wagon too fast and plugged it hard.... Nice going
    Welcome to Sonne Farms! On this channel we showcase numerous jobs a Corn/Soybean/Beef producing operation takes on each day. Why do you have to cull a cow with no calf.?
    Can you not hand milk a cow, and slowly reduce this until she's dry again,? Is it that this is too much work, could it not be a surrogate to a twin or a calf with a mother that can't feed it's calf for what ever reason.? Or am I missing something.?
    (I know nothing 🧐). I'm learning every time I watch one of your vids.
    Keep 'em coming. Love you guys.🥰🥰

    Be thankful you live out in the boon docks. You're much safer there right now than in town cooped up with other people. Here in Louisiana, we've lost 16 people (14 in the Metro New Orleans area) to the COVID 19 virus in the past week. I think if the human race survives this epidemic, you'll see a lot more folks leaving the cities and heading back to the country to put a little space between them and their neighbors!

    I have a question about your farm, if you don't mind:
    Your farm is referred to in a plural sense, implying that your farm is multiple land parcels in one. And you sometimes say "North farm", etc. I've seen farm real estate listings that show multiple land parcels that are all in the same offering, but are not all contiguous, but still close together.
    Well, is yours multiple land parcels in one? If so, how did it get to be that way?

    • @briansonne814
      @briansonne814 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Over time in your farming career it is not uncommon to add acres to your operation.
      Contiguous is very nice but it is not always an option. Often times when you buy an old farmstead you continue to call it by the previous owners name in order for the people working in your operation to recognize what piece of land you are referring to.

    Can you explain culling and why a cow that loses calves is culled

    • @SonneFarms
      @SonneFarms  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Kyle,
      So culling simply means taking a cow or sometimes a bull to market. We cull for a number of reasons including injuries, temperament, and loss of a calf. We cull when they lose a calf because honestly there is not much money in raising cattle the way it is, and they only way we make money to keep the farm going is by having that cow produce a healthy calf. If a cow loses a calf we have to still feed it which is like throwing away money. Plus that cow may have lost her calf due to a genetic disorder meaning she won't ever produce a calf, or she may have a chronic disease prevent her from producing a calf. Hope that answers your question!
