I think the mistake I made was not stopping the instance and a week later, I had almost $300 in charges. Fortunately, I was able to get a refund though am a little wary of trying this again. I think that for reliable a connection, you need to yourself be using a static IP. Another thing you could do is use CIDR notation that captures an entire subnet of your ISP and make sure you use a strong password. The chances one of your neighbors will hack in are probably next to nil.
