      When Wonderhussy gets her videos up we'll really be able to see what this van did - The dash came view doesn't reveal how rough the trail really is and them 4 "rock crawling" obstacles are no joke - That tight squeeze between the rocks was something but because I watched the guy go before me and I knew I'm narrower I just went full-send. I can see how dumb people break things out there...

      I actually don't like to be "helped" unless I'm broken down - I always figure it out and usually quicker than most. The issue with traveling with others is their anxiety and overthinking of things. I make a decision and then do it, then move on to the next thing. Jeepers drive me nuts with how long they stand around discussing everything which is ironic because they have some of the most capable vehicles out there

    Done it a few times, once on a KLR 225 Super Sherpa! Busted my thumb on the flats. They look ok till you hit a rolly polly rocks corner. Sand was suprisingly easier than expected. Jeeps are fine. Just started the video. Let's see how the Astro does. Should be ok with a challenge on the step in the tight canyon. But not often that a living quarters vehicle goes through. The Mogs are too wide. Whoever was in front of you could have done it together and not moved on so fast? This way, either one has a ride out if needed. Hmmm.

    Enjoyed the ride-along but I don't think I would do many of those without adding skid plates, jacking up the frame and adding a winch and bigger off roading tires. You have too much exposure to undercarriage damage to be out in the middle of nowhere without more protection.

    • @AstroVanTribe
      @AstroVanTribe  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't disagree - The skid plate is coming - I've been 4x4-ing since I was a kid and you can see how I'm avoiding potential hazards. I did no scraping at all on this adventure, I did hit one of the shock mounts when I was reversing out of that one spot where I went right instead of left but that was because I couldn't see exactly what was going on. The GREAT thing about this van is that I'm practically sitting on the wheels. My foot rests right on top of the left front wheel-well so I know where my tire placement is. Jeeps, 4Runners, pick-ups, anything with a hood in front of you where your tires are feet in front of you, are driving more blind which is why spotters are more needed. I usually do this sort of thing all alone and haven't run into any issues, yet. Slow and focused is key - I've had this thing all over the country from sugar sand beaches in N.J. to snow and mud in the high country of northern AZ to the treacherous steep lose gravely rutted switchbacks in southern CA. A lot of where I've taken this thing when I was alone would scare a lot of 4x4 enthusiasts. Bumpers, the winch and a skid plate are all on deck

    When you have a cherry ride like your Astro band, you always wanna be cautious because you hate to get dings and scratches. When I go off routing, I usually have a shit box. There’s nothing more exhilarating than blasting through those difficult spots and sagging year dude, you’ll kick up a hell of a dust storm, and you’ll hear sounds dragging on the undercarriage like nobody’s business, but hot, damn, with that momentum you’ll get through anything if you bring a couple along with you can always winch your ass out

    So this is what 10 miles of bad road looks like?

    • @AstroVanTribe
      @AstroVanTribe  ปีที่แล้ว

      more closer to 40 or 50 miles - It was something like 8 or 9 hours before I got to paved roads. We left at 10:AM I got to Bog Pine around 7 - A solid hour of that was screwing off so it could probably be done in 6 or 7 hours, It's a long off road ride. They left me at the sand dunes and its over 20 mile of washboard from there to a paved road, it sucked.... It's real rough, rocky, bouldery, technical stuff, with some freaky off camber stretches, then them 4 serious rock step obstacles - Steel pass is a pretty serious stretch of 4x4 road but if you're a good driver and take your time 100% doable, even in an Astro van
