The D4 looks really amazing and If I was going to buy a diesel, this car would definitely be my first choice. Amazing looks + amazing perfomance. Can't really go wrong with BMW.
Same. Just classy, refined and not overly aggressive while being as functional as possible. There's so much beauty in Alpina's discreet modifications, aesthetically and performance-wise.
Alpina take everything Bmw then take it to their own tuning house and improve all major components, improved power, transmission, suspension etc, that plus cool blue clocks and colours and/or decals, badges very unique interiors compared to standard BMW like weird leather colours... if I had that stack of money and wanted a BMW I would definitely buy an Alpina to set myself apart from all of the same looking BMWs that people below find annoying!
Keep it up lads! It's awesome how you test all kinds of cars on film. even diesels. I'll keep buying your mag for a long time to come. And I'm in New Zealand to boot.
I'm surprised Alpina are still going. They were the ultimate beemer when I was a kid in the 80's but since then, BMW's M cars have pretty much nailed everything.
Actually it does look rather refined and great. And like someone below said, with that kind of drivability and in the case of this car alone I'd finally go for the diesel.
For me personally, I don't care much for a true sportscar, like for example the M4. I mostly like to drive comfortably and relaxed, and besides I don't like to fill it up with gas every other day. What I do like, is a car that's fast when I need it to be! I love cars like these: a wolf in sheep clothing. Fast when you want it to be, same goes for relaxed driving and also the mpg's on a diesel like this is just pretty amazing.
I prefer lb-ft. The numbers are more consistent with hp than on N-m And btw, torque is force times distance, not divided. So it's N-m and lb-ft, not N/m or lb/ft
Grman Rodriguez Yes, my mistake...it's Nm. In my opinion they should use the derived units of SI so kW for power and Nm for torque, but this is only my opinion :)
Funny to see how most of the "foreigners" struggle to get the concept of Alpina. Without wanting to sound arrogant, if you dont understand it, you're simply missing "understatement" :)
I've considered buying a diesel in the future but i have never been in a fast diesel before, I keep hearing about how fast remapped and even standard 335d's are. Are they powerful enough to give you the 'stomach drop' rollercoaster feeling? For anyone who has been in a fast diesel thanks in advanced.
I have the M57 engine twin turbo Diesel and I LOVE IT!! I wish that Alpina could sell the D4 here in the states. I would be in line for one, my car is currently at 340 whp and 574 wtq. BMWoA bring over here
maybe a bit less on the whispering in my ear narration, i dont like to hear all the strange liquidy noise in peoples mouths when they talk, but very good review, i really like the Alpina
I've got a 2002 e46 330D saloon and I love it, I've have tuned GTI's/Typre-R's and it is just as quick once you've got going and it is so effortless in its power delivery. Just buy one with good service history, swirl flaps removed and make sure the Clutch/DMFW is healthy and you're set.
holy shit i just think you got me love a diesel car i mean A DIESEL??? man i just can't help but love it! but hey what's up with 5:16 ALPINA D4 TURBO on the back i mean they are to showy and hideous:o but great job what next C63 ///AMG i can't wait for that one.
Alpina have never made drastic modifications to a BMW's exterior (I mean it would be hard to make them look better!). They've always been about refining and tweaking the power/drive trains.
Everybody seems to be forgetting the m550xd, ok it's a heavier car but seeing alpina is more based on luxery than sport who is ever going to drive it on a track so who cares the m550xd is heavier, it also has more power as standard and if tuned the difference is even bigger. I think an 5550xd also has so much more presence than the d3 and the interior if specced right also.
+BertoniBertone I don't think so. This is one of the blue colours available; the Alpina green has gold metallic particles in it and actually looks, well, a lot more 'green' :-)
Many thanks. Yep, it's a blue isn't it. Pity so few of Sytner's demo Alpinas (well...none, really ) are ever specced in Alpina's historic greens. I tested a D3 Touring in Buchloe last year in their current green and it looked great...but few seem to have the bottle to go for it. Don't know why when so many ( inc Chris Harris) we're wowed by the green 635 Alpina had on their IAA stand at Frankfurt this year....
Having reviewed the D3 and now the lovely D4, do you think we will see a review of the D5 in the near future? ps. Tell 'em to send to us Shermans, we'd love 'em!
Jesus Christ, you can barely seperate the BMW models from each other today. In some perspective it looks like a 5series, then like a 3series. Every BMW looks the same today. They really need a new designer. Alpina used to make the nicest looking aeroparts for BMW in the 90's. But nowadays they are just ugly as hell. The wheels are outdated. Alpina needs to come up with something modern and more dynamic.
Márquez Caramba Listen BMW clarified that the 4series is another seperate class. Its not a 3series. 3series is a Class of its own, even if they look the same. BMW told it so. Other than that. The 4series is also available as a sedan. So these are two different classes and therefore needs to look different. I dont say they look ugly, but they have no character like the E30, E46 which had a whole different look from the 5 series.
***** So you can't tell the difference between an E Class and C Class? Seriously? If not you need to check your eyes or did you mean the A Models? Then I agree. And Audi is the worst example. They all look the same, even their Designer said it. Here in germany even the press makes jokes about it. BMW models look the same especially from behind. Even friends of my which are BMW mechanics cant seperate them on the first sight. Most cars looks the same these days, no matter what manufacturer, but the BMW Models looks familiar to each other more then in the years before. If you look at an E90, E92 and E60. Totally different. You cant denie that toady there is a designspeak which make the different models look more identical than before. besides of that, I drive an F10 and I love the design.
***** So you didn't read what I've posted? but answer to criticism which i posted above? Lol ;) Only because you don't like everything on the X1,X3, X4 doesen't mean you're not a die hard fanboy who cant accept the reality. On every video comment section I look, I see you hating everyone and everything because they criticize BMW. You are a typical Fanboy living in your own perfect BMW world. I am a BMW Fan too, but I dont defend them like an idiot. If something is wrong than it be so and at BMW theres a lot of things going wrong in the past years. And the next step for you is, make a driving license and grow up.
well FYI the current gen 3 series was designed to look like a mini 5 series, which was a very conscious decision and very well received because the current 5 series looks beautiful...so the 4 series, which is basically a 2 door 3 series, would of course not look much different...although side by side they do clearly look like different cars - the 4 has a much lower stance, wider, more aggressive...though BMW took the lazy route interior-wise, because the 3 and 4 are exactly the same...hopefully next gen they differentiate them more. The 5 series interior of course looks completely different
A nice car which delivers performance. Unfortunately it is too heavy and big if you like sportscars. So if you go for a sportscar, I would prefer a Porsche Cayman S for instance. About the same price-range, but the Porsche is a handy two-seater, is lighter and comes with a boxer motor. It doesn't go over 300 km/h but well, it handles better and feels more accurate. Take a corner with an Alpina and with a Porsche, and you will feel the difference. If you want a comfortable long-range car, the Alpina should be the better choice.
Dunno if i wanna buy this i think imma just stick with my m3 for now just bought a new 599 so before i go spend some more big bucks i will have to test trive this
If only BMW made a V8 tri-turbodiesel for the new 5-series which Alpina could fiddle with.....that engine would be able to tear down the eiffel tower all by itself
I feel this guy does such terrible reviews. Steering - 'Lovely' gearbox - 'brilliant' break pedal - 'great' is that it? the pedals' not progressive or responsive? the shifts are sharp? it shifts quickly or short shifts when in normal mode? the steering has good weight but is fairly slow? you watch this vid and almost no information is given at all.
Well... it does seem generic, but if you sat down in one of these you would probably say the same things. I LOVE the alpina body kits and wheels...
Same. Just classy, refined and not overly aggressive while being as functional as possible. There's so much beauty in Alpina's discreet modifications, aesthetically and performance-wise.
I like alpina too cause those bmws still looks elegant whereas m cars are too aggressive looking
i love this video. i wish the d4 was available in the states
they are the worst thing about alpina actually. they have terrible body kits with no taste whatsoever.
@@martinkulik9466 Alpina is class
Is the *Alpina D4 Biturbo* the best diesel-powered performance car on sale today?
Is the diesel Audi R8 no longer on sale?
JaySee5 Was it ever on sale?
JaySee5 It never was on sale. The development of R8 TDI vehicles was cancelled.
Imothep
Ah! Right! It seems the V12 TDI never made it to production. Now there are rumors of a V8 TDI.
JaySee5
Actually it was produced for the q8, until a couple of years ago, with 500bhp and 1000nm of torque if am not wrong.
There is something with bmw designs, at launch I criticize but after a year or two, I am in love.
Yhis is because you are not bmw enthusiast
Very beautiful car. I wish diesels were more prominent in North America, just for cars like this!
Would love to see you test the Alpina XD4
Alpina take everything Bmw then take it to their own tuning house and improve all major components, improved power, transmission, suspension etc, that plus cool blue clocks and colours and/or decals, badges very unique interiors compared to standard BMW like weird leather colours... if I had that stack of money and wanted a BMW I would definitely buy an Alpina to set myself apart from all of the same looking BMWs that people below find annoying!
most beautiful coupe ever, hands down!
Keep it up lads! It's awesome how you test all kinds of cars on film. even diesels. I'll keep buying your mag for a long time to come. And I'm in New Zealand to boot.
omg, I change my mind about 7 series and handling, wow and that drift!!!
That car is a bloody good sleeper, I'd like to replace my F30 3 series with a D3 in a few years
You ever get it?
I'm surprised Alpina are still going. They were the ultimate beemer when I was a kid in the 80's but since then, BMW's M cars have pretty much nailed everything.

I've driven a 435d Xdrive and it was great, but the Alpina seems to be even better. Looks fantastic as well.
Please, use Nm instead of lb ft
Must say, I myself prefer lb's/ft as a torque measurement
I prefer lb-ft. The numbers are more consistent with hp than on N-m
And btw, torque is force times distance, not divided. So it's N-m and lb-ft, not N/m or lb/ft
Grman Rodriguez Yes, my mistake...it's Nm. In my opinion they should use the derived units of SI so kW for power and Nm for torque, but this is only my opinion :)
Why? We're in the UK
Del Johnson The metric system is in official use within the United Kingdom
Do Alpinas have service in BMW dealers?
+Ioannis Tr Yea. The package is ordered through BMW when you buy your car.
yes
Give me a D2 and I'm absolutely Sold!
D5 Review please!
I'd drive the hell out of this car! Love diesels. Too bad we'll probably never see one in the U.S....
the wheels / tires on the Alpina models look so much better than stock!
Great review.
My new favorite coupe. Luv it!
Excellent review subscribed
Funny to see how most of the "foreigners" struggle to get the concept of Alpina.

For anyone who has been in a fast diesel thanks in advanced.
Usual great review by Steve
This D4 is a classic.
When is the video review for the Mercedes AMG GT coming out?
Would like to see what Alpina can do with D1 / D2 Bi-Turbo versions of the 1 Series and 2 Series.
can you get these in the yew knighted staights?
Effortless style and performance. A very classy automobile.
i agree you need proper paddles not tiny buttons to shift gears
I have the M57 engine twin turbo Diesel and I LOVE IT!! I wish that Alpina could sell the D4 here in the states. I would be in line for one, my car is currently at 340 whp and 574 wtq. BMWoA bring over here
Are Alpina vehicles available in the US?
0:15 What's music / song name?
The fact that some people dislike the alpinas is mind boggling...
If im ever gonna buy a diesel i would buy this.Absolutely!
Amazing car just love it and great car control.
I just configured one of these on their website and it came out a £55k with a few must haves. Not far off an M4.
Hi is this engine based on the 335d? or the 330d
is the Hydrogen 7 series available in Toronto?
Steve, is there a review of your Alpina D3 somewhere?
M57N Engine and its clones R the best diesel engine ever when looking at reliability.and this straight 6 sound x-D
Eye opening comment over M3. This most drive brilliantly.
where is this road? looks really nice to drive
Wow. My perfect everyday car.
Amazing car !!! Love it !!!
Where is he driving the car? What road/track?
What brakes does it have ?
Is the D3 based on the 330d or the 335d?
Can anybody tell me the color option on this example? It's beautiful!
Great car but such a shame they only use the SE body kit and bumpers, if it had the MSport bumpers I would defiantly buy it
maybe a bit less on the whispering in my ear narration, i dont like to hear all the strange liquidy noise in peoples mouths when they talk, but very good review, i really like the Alpina
Just watched the M4 vs i8, so which is better the M4 or this D4 Alpina?
I'd like to see what they could fiddle with on the new M5. that would be sweet.
I have a 2011 bmw 330d . done the exuast, soafware , intack. and i got 258 kw 750 nm. 275 km/h
Where is this place?
Steve please could you review the xd3
seems pretty sweet for a diesel
Why dont they have the same style steering wheel as in the m4??
Got the same petrol light on as well I'll bet!!!
I am thinking of buying 330cd e46 Manual here they are 4-6k EURO
I've got a 2002 e46 330D saloon and I love it, I've have tuned GTI's/Typre-R's and it is just as quick once you've got going and it is so effortless in its power delivery. Just buy one with good service history, swirl flaps removed and make sure the Clutch/DMFW is healthy and you're set.
I'll take two. Nice upgrade from my 3 liter 1982 Mercedes :p
how about the wind noise and road noise?
How does this compare to the 335d xdrive? 🤔
I love Alpina wheels

Actually it is even better with those letters, like a decadent version, more German than German sort of thing.
+UzzyFuzzyy your comments ARE pointless...
so this must be the best car in the world
is 320d also a good fun to drive ?
Its very nice indeed but obviously doesn't have the urgency of this model.
i would choice the d3 because i like 4/5 doors
Would've been nice to see this compared to the 435D.
It certainly doesn't look 'completely stunning' as it looks like every other BMW saloon/couple..
That is just complete nonsense!
Alpina were never flashy flashy with their cars. They only made subtle changes to the body.
tavi921 so they did fuck all?
Tim Huth Most of their modifications take place under the bonnet.
Alpina have never made drastic modifications to a BMW's exterior (I mean it would be hard to make them look better!). They've always been about refining and tweaking the power/drive trains.

very nice colour I want spray my golf gt tdi in this colour
Man like STEVE
anyone else spot the Drone? i'll give ye a hint it's at 0:16
Alpina should start using the m sport style steering wheel
Will normal BMW dealers service the Alpina's and will they honor the warranty?
Yes to both.
M4 allday even tho its a petrol but this is one hell of a car
Having reviewed the D3 and now the lovely D4, do you think we will see a review of the D5 in the near future? ps. Tell 'em to send to us Shermans, we'd love 'em!
too bad they don't do the gran coupe along with the two :P that would have been the bomb.

give it a remap and it will be a better car than the M4 all year round and to live with
Its Chobham test track
Why put wheels that big on it? I like the look of more sidewall.
Bring that shit to 'uhMerica!
You don't have fuel of high enough quality to use it with this engine.
His voice sounds just like Johnny Eve's at the start of the video
Should have a better steering wheel. The m sport steering wheel with an alpina theme at least

Steering - 'Lovely'
gearbox - 'brilliant'
break pedal - 'great'
is that it? the pedals' not progressive or responsive?

the steering has good weight but is fairly slow?

watch some of his other reviews.
im not being specific to this one.
Don't like it then don't watch it
i'll do the same with your comment.
Simon Adams Silly you, you already replied :*
Man, I love Alpina, even since the '80.
what about mm3/4 vs alpina b3/4
DAMN. IT.
WHY CAN'T WE GET THIS IN CANADA?
#$^@&^#&@^#$&*@
I love it and want it.
It looks totally ordinary compared to an M4, like someone has added aftermarket wheels, spoiler and stickers to a 335d.
Who cares about a few extra MPG when spending that much money on a sports car, unless you are doing serious amount of mileage?, particularly when Alpina's depreciate faster than last years laptop.
Its a great car no doubt but no one will be cancelling their orders on the M4 to buy one of these. Its a diesel car with an automatic gearbox that the power drops off after 4,000rpm at the end of the day.
mah!
Its better looking than the M4. This is classy.

With all those big stickers :)

It's an Alpina D4....an ALPINA there's a whole fan base that would rather get the Alpina over the M and for those that can they'll be grabbing both...one is like a peach and the other a nectarine..the same but different enough for their own market
Best diesel ever!!!
