This feels like the old school 320d is all you need video from vintage Chris Harris. Common sense journalism to balance out the skids and buffoonery in a supercar we can't afford
Chris's best work has always been just him in a car alone simply telling us everything we need to know about that car. Great to see him back doing what he does better than anyone else.
F30 was the peak for bmw. Designs of everything else thereafter lost the ethos of what bmw is and should be. Glorious in Alpina guise. And what a spec too! Great choice Chris, great video.
Chris I LOVE YOU❤ thank you for making classic Chris Harris videos again. Just no nonsense car journalism. We need you. I love that you’re making videos about performance diesel’s because I own a high performance diesel myself and can preach why they are so bloody good. Honestly thank you for making this film.
I watched the original video where you said the 320d M Sport is all the car you could need. Then watched the Tiff video on the E90 D3 Biturbo where he said forget the 320d get the Alpina. So am now the proud owner of #114 E90 D3 Biturbo and it is the ultimate all rounder.
Happy to say I own an F30 330d… and I agree with Chris. It’s a classic. Buttons, power, economy, comfort. Awesome… I do dream of the Alpina though! …one day!
Had a 335d xDrive a few years ago, which has the same base engine, if I'm not mistaken, albeit with about 30 less hp. It was the ultimate long-distance weapon. Unshakeable traction in greasy northern winters and doing 45-48 MPG, when you weren't flooring it. And it looked so unassuming with the two little exhaust pipes, just like a 320d.
Couldn’t agree more. The perfect vehicle for driving in Britain. That’s why I’m so happy with my F31 335d touring. Waited and searched for over 6 months for the right spec. It was so worth it! Fantastic and now remapped so goes like a stabbed rat. The gearbox remap is an excellent addition too, transforms the driving experience.
@ I had a what was called a stage 3 gearbox remap. It eliminated the torque limiter, changes the way the box shift, rpm, throttle position, etc. It’s just far more responsive and less lazy when driving around in comfort mode. When you stamp on the accelerator, it’s much more instantaneous acceleration, less hesitation. When put in eco pro mode, the shifting reverts back to the original eco pro settings. So best of both worlds.
Being one of the happy few who owns a BMW ALPINA D3 Touring (F31) with real-wheel drive, I can confirm it’s one of the best cars ever made. 👌 Love the video Chris!
Great and refreshing vid. Whilst not an Alpina, I have a 2016 F30 335D, for 5 years now. Estoril Blue. Debadged. Cloth and suede seats. Leather is rubbish as a material. Honestly what it does I know I won’t be able to get elsewhere. It’s pretty much spot on for me. I’m toying with the idea of replacing it with an F87 M2 Comp but honestly where am I going to be able to enjoy the performance of that other than on track? Cameras and potholes everywhere. Take me back 20 years.
Had an M340d touring for 3 years, brilliant car. Now have an X5 40d, yes it has the new flat screen and few buttons but it has that awesome engine. Over 500 lbft and 350bhp, it's an incredible all rounder and I'll be keeping his one. Too many foolishly ditched diesel too soon imo.
I had a F30 330D stage 1 and it was one of my favourite cars I’ve ever owned. Any gear you put your foot down and it’d just fly. Effortless performance
As a fellow F30 d3 owner ( with an lsd ) I can honestly say this is the best all round car I have ever owned. If you just want to pop round tesco it’s great. If you want to have a spirited drive it’s absolutely the dogs - and on a run I manage over 50 mpg.
Well done on the great purchase mate! She looks a beauty. I have a E90 335d, (Diesel engine and Diesel car of the year) with no engine mods other than stage 2.9 tune which now makes 395hp & 600lb yet still handily does 35mpg plus. Redid the suspension & has pump with meth/distilled mix in Washer tank to clean the manifold. Also love the steering feel, so wonderful to drive with the torque always available. All I'd add is what you mentioned the LSD. These are probably The Best All round Cars ever made Chris 💫🤙🏽
Driving a f31 330xd in SunsetOrange myself . Really love the mighty N57D30 engine. 560nm torque is just great for everyday use. Love the Alpina spec, great blue color👍
I love BM diesels. I had an E60 535d remapped. Great noise, no black exhaust smoke, amazing torque, over 50mpg. The 640d gran coupe best looking BM, handles like a dream and will get you from here to the moon no problem
I brought a F30 320d a few months back. I know its not this alpina d3 but i agree with what chris is saying. Especially about people buying a new car. All these wet belts also seems to be more unreliable on purpose. I really like my F30, comfortable, plenty of power to over take and just a nice motor to cruise in.
I own an ALPINA D3 Touring F31. As fast as one needs on the road and, if really careful with the throttle, 600 mile range! 19 inch wheels still generate quite a lot of tyre roar on poor surfaces; this is the only real gripe. Really don't know what I'd replace it with when the time comes and hope to track it before then.
I bought my first ever diesel this year & I doubt I'll ever go back to high performance petrol. It's a gorgeous E350 AMG Premium line Cabriolet with LSD, a 9G Speed Shift MCT transmission that can do 0-60 in 4 seconds with a stage 1 remap & tops out at over 180mph. HOWEVER, it averages 28mpg around town & the best I've got on a run is 49.5mpg! I miss the growl of my petrol V8's, but it's a small price to pay for the luxury, sporty, economy driving I now get.
An honest legend talking honest sense. I daily drive a 3.0 525d f10. Not the fastest or flashiest. But it gets me over 40mpg in sports mode and doesn't hesitate when I boot it past old Doris on my commute to work.
I remember watching your first review (for “the DRIVE” program) of the F30 alpina B3. and although this wasn’t offered in USA, it inspired me to get my sapphire black metallic F30 335i 7 years ago. It looked so similar to the one you reviewed I Bought it used with 70k miles. Now it’s pushing 212,xxx miles. it’s an outstanding fun chassis and the N55 is a joy with a simple tune and bolt ons. Thank you, Chris Harris, for inspiring me and others with affordable reviews like this.
Chris, my base 991.2 C2 can do 40mpg on boring highway trips, with lots of police radar traps forcing me to obey limits. But then when I am on a mountain pass…well, it’s a 911, isn’t it? OK, not quite up to your Touring, but then my driving skills probably rarely test the limits of this amazing car. Done nearly 200,000km since I bought it, and I swear I have been grinning for most of them.
Fantastic car and great to see it getting some recognition again. I will never forget Steve Sutcliffe’s review of the D3 against the F80 M3. The D3 came out at the one to have.
I've got a F36 430d gran coupe.... So useable with its huge hatch back opening. It's up to 110k miles now / 40+mpg and I love it. Remapped to 300 something bhp. Schnitzer springs and dampers, softer individual leather inc the dash... AND!!! bmw electric tow bar so I dragged my little clio to 16 track days last year. Long live diesel!
Live in Texas and we had a BMW 3-series diesel touring for 2 weeks last year for a trip to Europe. It was awesome! Such great MPG and super punchy with loads of torque. We were fully loaded with 4 adults + luggage and it never was lacking, even on mountain roads. 👍
My Stage 1 430d M sport is amazing. 320bhp, 480ftlbs and can get 50 plus mpg on a motorway run. Fab all rounder and looks great too. The M57 and N57 engines are legends in the Diesel world.
The same way I feel with my Ecoboost Mustang, I got enough power for daily use (320hp), great looks (Shelby Gt350 kit and quad exhaust) and much more economical than the V8.
You know what - this generation of 3 (& 4 series) is just magnificent. I have a 420d, it’s plenty quick enough, 60mpg at 70+ mph and 750 miles of range, fits a family’s worth of luggage in the boot and is comfortable & reasonably refined. What more could you possibly want? Oh and I second your comments on the speed of the manual shifts, just boggles the mind! That 3.0 diesel is a masterpiece and it’s a shame they’ve now dropped it for PHEV’s
Nice D3 Chris. I daily a F31 335d and absolutely love it. Best allrounder ever. The only problem is with them is the timing chain replacement as it's an engine out job and not exactly cheap.
I thought this was the earlier poverty spec twin turbo 4 cyl diesel but its the 6cyl n57 biturbo with alpina mods ...what a sleeper ...not cheap im sure but utterly sublime and faster than 98% of stuff . Good to see you back on here , always too good for top gear di*cking about stuff
Having had mamy high performance diesel over the last 10 years with doing 15k a year for work, I took the plunge and been running a Tesla Model 3 Performance for the last year its absolutely bonkers 500bhp 4wd and 130mpg equivalent absolutely the best car ive had to date super chilled and quite when you want it to be 95% of the time but takes off like a rocket when you need it 🤩🤩🤩 so impressive!
I bought the 435d GC, it'll do 50 on a good run, X drive, and with its map, 390hp and 780nm, and with suspension mods and a bit of camber, the car is an awesome daily.
Didn’t know Alpina made diesels. And just love those wheels! The traditional Alpina wheel is my favorite wheel design, also love that deep metallic Alpina blue body color too.
It's a beauty to boot, I have an E70 X5 35d with 220k miles and honestly (touch wood) I cannot in good conscience move it on as the engine and transmission are as strong as the day I got it, 8 years ago at 60ish k miles, it is reliable, bulletproof (-20C) here in Midwest, what a great car. On this topic, I have a M4 with 110k and CEL has never raised its head once. They do make the best engines
This is car perfection for me, compact size for the class (new G20 is much bigger behind the wheel) plus you have a strong 3-litre inline-6 diesel (who else in class has that?) and drivers engagement is unparalleled 👌
The F31 335dx that i had was great and it was the peak of my motoring as it made me _want_ to drive it, everyday usable power and exteriorily compact, not "perfect" but just right. SE suspension (coz it was xDrive) was perfect for the crappy UK roads, B-roads especially, just the run-flats gave some harshness. Sad to give it back. But now when i look at getting another used one the interior feels dated & cramped (for a person of my height) plus the ones i see are particularly _used_ however all the newer versions & beemers in general feel 'cheap' and soul-less, premium feeling products, yes, but missing something.
People really forgot just how good Diesels have become and how great they are. Even a 320d (Touring) will do great mileage, enough torque, great handling and enough space. But CH already said that ages ago.
I love this type of video.I drive an old skoda Octavia vrs tdi and have so much fun using the power and ok handling in the knowledge that im not doing a million miles an hour while doing 48mpg all in the family car.
I love my 2023 XD3, 0-100 in 4.9, right size for an SUV, and does 7 -8 L/100km daily and 5.5 on a freeway drive. Astonishing. Much more versatile than an X3M in my view.
We had a D3 F31 Touring for a couple years! Fantastic car, always wanted the 19's rather than the 20's as well! Did a track day round Snetterton as well and was hilarious keeping up with all sorts of machinery! 💪 Love em!
Honestly my E90 LCI 320d was a stonker of a car. A lot of the stuff I see in this car, specifically the interior, stems from the E90. It was leagues ahead in terms of a modern feel, and even now I have an A3 and my dad has the BMW, it still looks modern and up to date compared to brand new cars, even on 180k miles! Best bit is it's 2010 so no ridiculous driver assists!
Has anyone heard of a fuel called HVO? It burns cleaner than diesel and is a direct drop in even Euro 6 diesels, it’s not cheap right now but I can buy it at the pump, I use it in a diesel drift car because it has a noticeable bump in power and now the car makes no smoke!
This is the same issue that stops me selling my Jaguar XFS 3.0, loads of torque, pulls like crazy, but will do 45 on an A & B road mix, and nudge 60 on a run driven lightly. Only thing that was pushing me is mine is a year older than your BM and Euro 5. But then I realised I never drive into London, and only twice in 2 years into Bristol. Like any diesel driver though, who knows what's round the corner.
An Alpina driven by CH? A reminder that how good "all around cars" this brand still produces! I would like to see a review of the new B3 GT.. that is an impressive step up of the game! 💪😎
This feels like the old school 320d is all you need video from vintage Chris Harris. Common sense journalism to balance out the skids and buffoonery in a supercar we can't afford
I’ve watched that same video several times. Had three F30’s now since ha!
Makes me feel old that I remember when that video was posted 😅 I watched it within a few hours of it being online
"Are we in Belgium or are we in Germany?" "France I think"
Thinking about that one aswell
That video made my mind up to have the 420d at the time. Brilliant car! Brilliant video
This was my old car. He’s right about the engine and the power is awesome. Glad you’re liking it Chris. 👍
Interested to know what you replaced it with?
Hi
I’ve always wanted a V8 so I bought a 2018 M6 GC Comp, and I love it!!!
@@markhallam2511excellent! Great choice mate! I’ve got an F10 M5 and it is simply magnificent. You’ll love the M6 pal 🎉
@@markhallam2511 Thank you - glad you enjoying the V8.
How much did you sell it for
My 2014 F31 D3 Touring has just passed 310,000 miles. Lovely car.
is that the one that had the engine replaced by bmw somewhere around the 250k miles mark?
The one owned by the Sytner guy with the new motor?
@@piovo1 yes new engine at 221k.

You did right sticking with the 330, i got a 335d, the economy loss is massive... i mean I still love it, but can't be sure I made the right choice.
Clear glass, chrome strips, Alpina stripes and wheels... yeah, right on ❤
The only guy on TH-cam that wants smaller rims for his BMW. Glad you're back!
I could never get tired of watching Chris Harris reviews.
“Here endeth the lesson” should absolutely how all Harris videos end. The man’s a genius

Intrigued by the box remap. I’m pretty happy with the power/torque (after years of Swedish shitboxes!) What does the box map bring to the party?

Ive recently bought a 335d touring too , it will be getting mapped after Christmas .
Great car 👍🏻
Have you upgraded the springs? I really dislike the feel of the suspension on mine. Feels really crashy sometimes and other times really floaty.
Being one of the happy few who owns a BMW ALPINA D3 Touring (F31) with real-wheel drive, I can confirm it’s one of the best cars ever made. 👌 Love the video Chris!
Brilliant car. Love the way Chris puts things across too. Doesn’t have to follow the narrative, just appreciates a very good car.

Usually allrounder means jack of all trades, but king of none. Perfectly sums up this car tbh.

This is a quality early Christmas prezzie from Mr Harris. I love Alpina's and diesel motors that can show pertol motors a hard time.
My Stage 1 430d M sport is amazing. 320bhp, 480ftlbs and can get 50 plus mpg on a motorway run. Fab all rounder and looks great too. The M57 and N57 engines are legends in the Diesel world.

Great review of a great car. Thanks for the balanced view and your comparisons. More please Chris! Thank you 🎉
Yes Chris! Great stuff indeed, keep doing your thing my friend.
Really enjoyed this video. I have a F30 330d SE and I absolutely love it, I will own it for as long as I can.

This is car perfection for me, compact size for the class (new G20 is much bigger behind the wheel) plus you have a strong 3-litre inline-6 diesel (who else in class has that?) and drivers engagement is unparalleled 👌
Alpina for me have always been the pinnacle of subtle luxury.
Such good approachable car journalism - love it - fair play mr Harris

People really forgot just how good Diesels have become and how great they are. Even a 320d (Touring) will do great mileage, enough torque, great handling and enough space. But CH already said that ages ago.
I love this type of video.I drive an old skoda Octavia vrs tdi and have so much fun using the power and ok handling in the knowledge that im not doing a million miles an hour while doing 48mpg all in the family car.
With you on the all-rounder and thx for the infos, Teachah😎😉
I love my 2023 XD3, 0-100 in 4.9, right size for an SUV, and does 7 -8 L/100km daily and 5.5 on a freeway drive. Astonishing. Much more versatile than an X3M in my view.
X3M is way cooler and sounds better
2019 F31 320i touring is all you need on our roads today
Feel the same about my E92 335d. All the GT you ever need.
Seen a fair few Alpina's in the States working in healthcare, doctors seem to love them.
Cue D3's sky rocketing in value.....
They have been expensive for a while. The tourings are sought after.
I have a f30 335d and it’s just perfection at being a all round car
Not a fun car
Another fantastic review, refreshing journalism
B3 Touring is ultimate modern one.
Has the S58 and crucially for me.. A SUNROOF unlike the M3 touring
I love listening to this guy talk about cars
Has anyone heard of a fuel called HVO? It burns cleaner than diesel and is a direct drop in even Euro 6 diesels, it’s not cheap right now but I can buy it at the pump, I use it in a diesel drift car because it has a noticeable bump in power and now the car makes no smoke!
Cars like this are so much more interesting than the latest hypercar.
Great stuff. Happy Christmas Chris and to all 🥳🎄⛄🦧
Chris has done wonders for everyone that has a d3 for sale tonight 😂 they’ll all be sold in a week 👍
Golf GTD mk7.5 all day for me 😊
An Alpina driven by CH? A reminder that how good "all around cars" this brand still produces!
I would like to see a review of the new B3 GT.. that is an impressive step up of the game! 💪😎
I'd absolutely love a d3 touring 😍
Great car, Chris. I've always been a fan of Alpinas but here in Canada they're barely a thing.
