The Decreasing Rarity of Dragon Type Pokemon

  • Dragon Type Pokemon have always been the strongest and rarest type of Pokemon across the series, and tons of legendary Pokemon are given the type. However, with each recent generation, that rarity is diminishing, with lots of new Dragon Type Pokemon being introduced, many of which do not have the typical imposing attributes that Dragon Pokemon are known for. This video essay is all about documenting that decreasing rarity, and a brief look at what the future of dragon type Pokemon could be. Make sure to like and subscribe for more Pokemon content!
My videos are all about Pokemon! Whether it be Pokemon battles, Shiny Hunting, Pokemon tier lists, Pokemon quizzes and challenges, or gameplay ranging from Pokemon Scarlet and Violet to Pokemon Firered or Emerald Nuzlockes, you can expect all things Pokemon here on the Fargus channel!

What makes a Pokémon a dragon type isn’t really based on how “cool” or “scaley” it is, because our modern western understanding of a dragon is very different to ancient interpretations of Dragons in different cultures. Such as Appletun being based on a “wyrm” in an apple while also being reptilian like most other dragons and Goodra is based on how weak knights were depicted fighting snails instead of dragons. I just think overtime when it comes to what a “dragon” type is, it’s always been much more what the inspiration for the mon is rather than if it looks like a classical dragon or a dinosaur.

Fairy is a large part of why Dragon is so common now. The hardest counter to dragon types is pretty common itself. Dragon can't possibly be a threat because fairy types exist, so why keep them behind unnecessary walls if they're gonna get destroyed by a common pokemon.
I wonder what the game would be like if they buffed Ice, maybe gave dragon more weaknesses (Steel or Fighting because noble warriors using swords usually slay the dragons/beasts) or balanced fary so it didn't have two not very offensive weaknesses. Steel and Poison hitting you supereffectively is not a threat at all.

I faintly remember an interview mentioning that gen 3 was around the time GF attempted to make more "cooler" designs, and I think that played a role in more non-legendary dragon types. Just by labelling something as a dragon inherently gives it a cooler vibe. Like altaria is an unassuming dragon type that you'd be pleasantly surprised to learn that it actually has that typing. Of course this design principal resonates well with the fanbase and it leads to more dragons being available. Other commenters already answered why is it okay to have a lot of these dragons, which is their intent on nurturing the competitive scene that leads to the introduction of the fairy typing. It might seem necessary at the beginning of the IP's life to create a reputation for dragon types, but it's pretty much unnecessary now that we're 9 generations of games in. Ice just isn’t as much of a weakness to Dragon-types overall across the board.
Even then, the Deino line has Zweilous and Hydreigon, powerful attackers, Noibat line is supposed to be frail in return for speedy Boombursts, Zygarde is supposed to increase in strength, Kommo-o is supposed to be a set-up sweeper that has at least one major weakness, and the evolutions of Applin save Hydrapple are supposed to be a bit middling.

I think Dragon-type in Gen 1 was a gameplay balance addition moreso than a special, legendary type to show off to your friends at recess.
You can find some dragons throughout your adventure, like Charizard, Gyarados, or Aerodactyl, but then Lance pulls out a monster that resists Grass, Water, and Fire. In one of the final fights of the game, your ability to determine the weaknesses and resistances of newly encountered Pokémon is tested.
I personally just don't think GAME FREAK was stingey to maintain an image of prestige, or at the very least, this wasn't considered before gameplay considerations.

What would be kinda cool is if there was a main series game where the region had nothing but dragon Pokémon. The starters, your rival, the gym leaders, everyone had different dragon Pokémon throughout the whole game. Except for the final gym leader and champion (maybe even an Elite 4 member), they would be from another region and all use fairy type Pokémon. I feel like that would make that game pretty hard because everyone you face off against would be evenly matched because you both have counters to each others Pokémon. And the toughest battles would require some serious strategy to get through

It’s kind of crazy to think that all of the newer types (Dark, Steel, Fairy) have been added onto starters. But no Dragon (excluding Mega Charizard and Mega Sceptile).
I’m kind torn on this. On one hand, I do like how many Dragon types have been restricted to the mid, late, and post games as to keep you from catching them early and stream rolling through the game. I remember playing Y and only using the Gible I caught. It was over level 90 by the time I reached Diantha. And with Violet, I caught a Bagon early on and used Salamence to basically sweep the game. That’s basically what’s happening right now in my play through of Gen 7 too. I really don’t think they should have been available so early. But I’ve always been fine with things like Noibat being available early on because it’s really weak until it evolves. Even after it does, it’s still pretty weak for that point in the game and just relies on its speed. So yeah, Dragons being held off on usually makes them feel worth the journey.
On the other hand, I’ve wanted the first gym to be a Dragon one for a while. Between Gen 5 introducing a gym with multiple leaders to put you at a type disadvantage and Gen 6 introducing the Fairy type, I think having a Dragon type gym first is a cool idea. It resists all of your starters’ STAB attacks. And if they made it start in an icy part of the region, it would teach you that you have to catch mons if you want an easy win. I’d want then to make it that at least one or two Dragon lines would be obtainable after beating the gym leader so the player could wield them for themselves. But maybe not psuedo legendary strength quite yet. More along the lines of Noibat or Horsea.
Idk. It feels like Dragons have become less of an award for making it far into your journey and more of an handout just to further lessen the difficulty of these games. I think Game Freak’s been having a little difficulty in finding the right balance between making the games challenging and making them quick to get through ever since they moved the the 3DS. And that’s impacted the lore of some mons and types.

Also it’d be cool if we had two pseudo-legendaries like in Gen 3. One could be a dragon type like expected and the other could lack that typing. Like a Water/Dark hippo, a Grass/Electric evolution to a regional form of Deino based off the Potato, etc.

I’ve held this idea for many years, that they could easily do a starter trio where all of the final evolutions gain the dragon type, and it’d be cool as hell. Or maybe make the pikaclone Electric/Dragon. The early route bug tho is also a fun idea. I hope don’t make TOO many dragon type Pokemon but I’d love for them to bring the type into roles that they haven’t touched yet

I'd prefer they keep the boatload of dragon types to a minimum to keep them special when they're introduced, that also goes for pseudo legendaries. Since gen 4 we've had pseudo legendary dragon types the whole time. I'd wish they'd give us some more cooler ones like Tyranitar who lasted a LONG time in competitive and Metagross who just looks so cool for a Steel/Psychic type.
Unless the next gen's pseudo legendary is a Bug/Dragon type, I want something different.

I think Gen 3 was where the shift took place, Gen 4 showed the problem with adding more overly powerful dragons and Gen 5 with making too many of them to the point Fairy Type had to be introduced. Fairy Typing itself demoted the 'rarity' of older Dragon Types as they lost a lot of things that made them unstoppable: Dragon Spam. Which is why many of the broken Dragons go for Flying SPAM instead or get outclassed.
    Again, short summary:
    Gen 1:
    - Dratini line: hard to obtain, hard to train, no STAB balanced out by the wide movepool of colorful weather manipulating moves and Agility + Wrap + Hyperbeam
    Gen 2:
    - Kingdra: powerful dragon that can only be obtained through trade and a very specific item, has only 1 weakness, no Dragon STAB worth using as offensive Dragon Type moves are still not good
    Gen 3:
    - Flygon: fast powerful dragon with good STAB coverage balanced by the lack of physical special split and limited physical coverage, has ok special movepool, great typing, great ability. Way too easy to obtain for the amount of power you get
    - Altaria: easiest dragon type so far balanced by awful offensives, can run any type of offensive set due to good movepool of the dragon type
    - Bagon line: balanced by the lack of good physical stab, still good offensive movepool, great defenses especially through Intimidate, first competitively notable Dragon Type
    - Lati@s twins: roaming post game legendaries which take planning to catch, massive Special Attack allowing them to take advantage of their massive special movepool, balanced by bad iv glitch (except when optained through South Island or Emerald)
    - Rayquaza: held back by the lack of good STAB to fully take advantage of it, MEWTWO stats, high level, hard to reach, amazing movepool, good ability to check 2 Pokemon that will define many tournaments where Rayquaza will be legal
    Gen 4:
    - Gible: balance? What is that? Outrage got buffed to 120. Physical Special split happened, thus Dragon Moves have powerful physical moves. Insanely fast. Very accessable. Pretty low Evolution level for Pseudo (perhaps the earliest evolution level of all pseudoes?), insane speed, Dragon and Ground have near perfect coverage... with Fire it is perfect... can you guess what coverage Garchomp has? Can learn Sword Dance. Can slap Special Moves because its lowest stat is still 80 base Special Attack and it learns a lot of high base power special moves.
    - Dialga, Palkia and Giratina: Do I need to mention anything? Their stats are in a way they can pretty much any set. Dialga and Palkia have insane coverage and high base power moves. Their typing at the time give them amazing defensive utility and make them hard to kill. Giratina offers great utility due to its Ghost typing and Shadow Sneak.
    - Arceus: Unobtainable through normal gameplay. In Dragon Form, it offers waste coverage, amazing stats taking advantage of Dragon Types massive offensive capabilities as only 1 type resists it and that type is weak to Ground and Fire (types for which Arceus has high base power coverage for on both attacking sides)
    Gen 5:
    - Axew line: Insane mid game Pokemon, seemingly balanced by the lack of Fire Type moves, easy evolution requirement for the power you get, needs only 2 moves to break through everything, has great support moves in Dragon Dance and Sword Dance, good speed, highest non-legendary attacking stat in 147 at the time
    - Durridigon: 1 stage slow dragon type with great abilities for any role you want to use it for.
    - Deino line: takes the most investment to get the final form, has stellar coverage, really fast
    - Reshiram and Zekrom: Perfect STAB coverage Reshiram with an ability that even Heatran makes it impossible to stop and the Kyogre and Lugia Killer Zekrom. They would fall off later generations but their high base power moves and dragon STAB carry them pretty much.
    - Kyurem: Balanced by awful Ice Typing making it weak to common types, 2nd highest stats in its fusion forms, delivers the highest amount of Dragon Damage (except to Outrage from Hustle Zweilos)
Up to gen 5, dragons are too accessible, have high base power moves, barely anything can switch into them due to few pokemon resisting Dragon. If only a handful where Dragons and didn't have so many advantages, then DragMag teams wouldn't be a thing. To justify more 'lesser' dragon types to exist, Fairy Type was introduced. Now Dragon is no longer a 'rare' type

  • @TheOSTLobby

Gatekeeping so many strong mons behind the dragon typing was one of the reason why fairy was strong from the moment of its introduction. If fairy only counters like, bug, no one would give a shit. It was clear that dragon was a very unbalanced typing and the devs had been trying to undo that over the years.

  • @trickstercj4366
    @trickstercj4366 หลายเดือนก่อน

Honestly I believe that most of these mons pre Gen 3/early Gen 5 were way too rare despite being balanced by the fact that their super strong final forms require late game levels.
They would make a perfect parallel to bug types being early game mons that evolve quickly but fall off late to mid game. Vs. Dragons and pseudos who are powerful late game but are borderline dead weights early game.
It's why I loved trapinch, gible, and noibat. But left constantly frustrated with mons like beldum, larvitar (Ik not dragons but still applies) , and deino.
It would be interesting to hear stories about players ditching these mons early on because of how bad they started out only to run into a npc with the ditched mon's final form defeating their team
