Skeledirge's bird actually seemed like a pretty clear allusion to depictions of the Egyptian plover to me. And I think it's pretty cute how it hatches from crocalor's sombrero-fire-egg. Plus, birds are, like, the first animal that comes to mind when you think of singing, and it turns into a microphone when skeledirge uses torch song, so it makes sense on that front too. It might be neat if a new design philosophy is come up with for starters, I somehow suspect straight elemental animals might be unlikely to return due to worries it may come off as boring, but doing something besides incorporating human roles would probably be a good idea to make the concept fresh again.

All of the new starters share the carnival theme, and the games are set on the region of Portugal and Spain, carnaval is part of the culture, they are performers, skeledirge is a singer clown, meowscarada a mascarade magician and quaquavel a samba/capoeira dancer Crocodiles are part of a lot Spanish stories a god choice for the starter has is an Iberian Linx for obvious reasons, a duck/peacock is the least inspired I would say but not out of place Idk what ur on about with the “uninspired, complicated but not enough” There is so much culture on this starters and just cuz you don’t get it is a bad thing

Gen 1 - 9/10 really good and simple, and have the best starter ever charmander. Gen 2 - 1/10 terrible, except Feraligatr looks cool. Gen 3 - 10/10 perfect; every single one of them. Gen 4 - 6/10 mid, infernape goated torterra generic, empeleon had a good idea (Napoleon amazing) but the execution is terrible, design is horrible. Gen 5 - 0/10 all bad, snivy is kinda cool. But samurot was supposed to be a samurai but he doesn’t look like one. Pig looks goofy Gen 6 - 7/10 Greninja carries hard. Gen 7 - 8/10 very decent. Incineroar has the most basic design. We’ve literally 2 other biped fire starters who know how to punch. But the other 2 are really great. Gen 8 - 4/10 I really like Rillaboom, his design is brutal, he looks op. Honestly don’t like cinderace. His design is simple but his role is so specific, that combination is just bad. Gen 9 - 7/10 honestly love them. And they have the best first stage in all generations, look really cute. Sprigatito, Fuecoco, Quaxly are the best. But unfortunately their final evolutions are not that good. Except for Skeledirge, who’s a ghost colorful singer, the other 2 have disappointing evolutions. Meowscarada is not that bad but Quacaval is such a let down. Specially because Quaxly is my favorite looking first stage starter.

Honestly you didn’t research enough on gen 8. They’re supposed to represent British entertainment. Football (Beckham), Action movies (James Bond) and music.

Gen 6 was the last good starter gen, im Spanish and we got done dirty by gen 9, could’ve done a bear starter, sprigatito could’ve turned into a Lynx or a lion, and how did they waste the idea of having a bull starter in a region based around the Iberian peninsula

Quaquaval was so bad the moment i got him i released it....... Even though the typing looked fun the whole design and the way it moves during a battle is terrible......

You can really tell which starters are new and which starters isn't - I'm cutting the line between Gen 4 and Gen 5, though I still think Gen 4 starters is already characterized

tho this day i have no idea what kind of drugs GF was on when they made Decidueye stats, he should have gotten stats similar to mewoscarada, instead they are all over the place, like someone just randomized them

How are you criticizing gen 2 for being too simple? Gen 1 is literally the most. Squirted is literally just a regular turtle design other than the cannons. And charizard and is also a pretty generic winged reptile design. Typhlosion with its flame collar is about as much special design as regular charizard. Flower around meganiums neck and leaf on top isn’t any more simpler than venusaur with the tree as plants parts on grass types is pretty common. Blastoise is only one unique with the cannons compared to feralligator and feralligator certainly looks like it already has a personality. Plus design certainly stands out among other alligator/crocodile/lizard mons.

I noticed that with the release of gen 9 when I thought the new starters didnt fit well as pokemon at all

the way i saw it, kanto/jhoto south/north korea. the starters are essentiallly lizards except for quilava who similar to hoen (hoen being japan) who torchic alao a furry lizard

This is all just subjective opinion. “Feraligatr is plain, it’s just a crocodile.” “Sceptile is a lizard, but it has personality.” When I look at those two next to each other they look more alike than any other two starters. They are slightly different lizards. People do mental gymnastics to come up with reason to dis Pokémon designs they don’t like and praise their favorites. This conversation topic is a waste of time. Gamefreak does whatever it wants. If they cared about fan opinions we would have much better games. Just pick the one you like best, or dislike the least. You spend most of the game just looking at the back of their heads anyways.

In paldea i can see the grass and water starter actually enjoying their "job" skelridge however i cant imagine a crocodile singing, and he doesnt seem to enjoy that anyway 😅

gen 8 and gen 9 have a really trash design, are very forgettable and out of place considering the pokemong world. they should stop doing this bad new gens and instead create like a remaster of the previous games and gens. and all these z moves, dynamax, all trash and out of place, just lame and dull

basically to put this video in short Gen 1: cool ass dinosaurs dragons and a literal turtle with pump ends sticking out of his shell gen 9: A skullcrawler that likes to sing, a furry that is a magician and a ostrich that likes to dance gen 2-8: the lower it is the more animalistic, the higher more humanlike And gen 4 is just in the middle. Unlike this video however, i do quite dislike the concept of starters getting more humanoid because you cant make them a terrorist organisation anymire
