To those that don’t read the caption before each clip. Thank you for pointing out that Lucille Ball is not actually singing with her real voice. Apart from the last song “Friendship” Lucy’s songs have been dubbed by Martha Mears.
I always forget Red Skelton was in movies too. I remember him from his TV show. He once ate at a little sandwich shop where I was working, and he left me a twenty dollar tip.
Funny, smart, all around amazing - I Love Lucy - seen the world over - first came out in 1951 and still watched 2022. Lucy brought laughter to the world.
She was great in Dance, Girl, Dance, and in two film noirs Lured and The Dark Corner. The former was my favorite film: great story and cast, also Lucy showed her comedic talent in this too. Lucy was funny in Dance, etc. did all her own singing and dancing too. One comment about the movie The Big Street she played with Henry Fonda that Desi was jealous of her working with him, he would come to the set and kind of get in the way. They finally had to ban him from the set entirely.
This is another thing Lucille Ball and Mary Tyler Moore had in common: they were both dancers and chorus girls before becoming famous as television comediennes!
For years I've thought it was a pretty ironic in-joke that Lucy and Ethel sang "Friendship" on "I Love Lucy" as though they were just two nobodies appearing in a little talent show - when in fact, in real life, Lucille had actually introduced the song in a major Hollywood film in the previous decade.
She sang it in the film version of "Du Barry", but it was actually introduced four years earlier in the 1939 Broadway production on which the film is based by Ethel Merman and Bert Lahr.
She had great legs till the end of her life - see her with Bob Hope on the Oscars a few weeks before she died, she had a black dress slit up the side to the top of her thigh.
She worked in the heyday of Hollywood dancers like Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers. I understand how a respectable dancer like Lucy might be humble about where she ranks.
At any stage - Lucy and Desi complemented and complimented each other - too bad Desi was an addict; sex, booze and gambling, even before they married. In 1944 she filed for divorce - but did not go thru with it. Phew we would not have known either of them in I Love Lucy and beyond.

Needs a lot more Gene Kelly, he was the best part of the movie. "Do I Love You?" and the rousing Black Arrow speech and song were highlights. Funny how a movie comes alive when Kelly's on the screen.
Great clip, thank you! Lucy was a once in a lifetime legendary entertainer. But, she sang like screeching hen. :-D Her daughter Lucy Arnaz on the other hand, sings like a bird.
Lucy was so successful, and independant and one of a kind, yet, she was always brokenhearted as her true love was a womaniser. What a pity, her personal life was a sad one.
Anybody know the name of this picture? I sure love seeing these old song and dance numbers Lucy did before her TV show. She was gorgeous! And she did her numbers just fine, in my book. The lady was talented!
Chuck Ashton actually I think that is her voice when they’re singing the song friendship. I wonder how much they paid to get permission from anything Goes?
i'm sorry, but that is NOT Lucille Ball singing. it was not uncommon in films of that era for women to be cast for their beauty and for singing parts to be dubbed....just like this one. however, the voice in the "Frienship" scene is, indeed, hers. that was her singing style and that fact was well known in Hollywood -- she had a voice for comic singing, but was otherwise simply not a singer.
Though Lucille can rightfully claim the mantle of “comic genius,” I fear that “talent” -of any kind - had abandoned her in both dance & singing…..Even in her most “graceful” dance segments, Ball moves stiffly & without grace, while her voice might most charitably be described as being “untrained”….

And she was doing a comic voice on 'Friendship'

...so when Lucy and Ethel sang Friendship, it was actually a subtle nod to Lucy's earlier career. hmmm
"actually"
Lucy was such an extraordinary Lady! Beautiful, classy, fashionable and talented!
Funny, smart, all around amazing - I Love Lucy - seen the world over - first came out in 1951 and still watched 2022. Lucy brought laughter to the world.
Lucille Ball and Red Skelton...two comic geniuses! Both very talented in many other ways as well. Love them both.

Lucy should've been a lot more than just a B movie queen. She really holds her own in this movie. Glad her television show was so successful.

THAT'S FAAANTASTIC! LUCY STOLE THOSE SCENES AND SHE IS SUCH A GREAT DANCER. SO ELEGANT REALLY. WHATA BODY!! WHAT LEGS!! SHE FLOWS.
She had great legs till the end of her life - see her with Bob Hope on the Oscars a few weeks before she died, she had a black dress slit up the side to the top of her thigh.
Lucy always said she couldn't dance, but she did pretty well in her movies.
she also said she didn't have a good figure & wasn't very beautiful, but she did have a good figure & was very beautiful.
That was just for Lucy Ricardo character not the actual Lucile ball!
@@lilyemmalindsay9025 Virginia O'Brien: "You never look at me like that." Red Skelton: "You never looked like that!"

She always said that she wasn't funny too
That blue dress in the second song is so absolutely gorgeous *_* (ignroing that pearl necklace, which I assume was added for comedic reasons)
Lucy was so much more than a tv star....beautiful movie star as well.
Hotchie Motchie!!! Red Skelton was a fox when he was younger!!! 😻
time of elegance and grace
I am assuming what Zero Mostel did was try to hide his use of blackmarket sugar, as it was rationed at that time during WWII.
Jaymes Guy astute!! that or he was hella dosing
God, he's so small back then
We old timers know it was sugar! Imagine what people now would think. Although I don't know if anyone would drink the other stuff!
Loved Lucie on my favorite husband radio show
At this stage Desi was still lucky to have Lucy.

the most beautiful and talented woman
She sure was! Loved her work😘
She was so beautiful ❤ on of my fav Lucy movies. I just brought 'five came back(1939)' and 'the fuller brush girl(1950), can't wait!!
Christine Madeline Those are both great films too.😁
My two favorite Lucy movies (b&w) Lured and Dance Girl Dance.
@@LJ-ht4zs those movies are great! Lured is probably my fav too😃
Lucille Ball was very pretty, funny & talented
I love Lucy. Of course the dub doesn't sound like what I would have imagined Lucy would sing. Fun to see this. Thank you.
I love musicals
She was brilliant in "Friendship." Weird they dubbed her in part of the movie and then used her own singing voice in "Friendship."
I LOVE LUCY!
I'm here for the costume jewelry.
big lucy fan i collect her stuff

WOw! she is gorgeous, with beautiful legs!
My gosh! Gene Kelly as I live and breathe.
LUCY and Zero Mostel!!!!!
Lucille was a lady the fairest gal of her day!
And to think 10 years before this Lucy was one of those chorus girls in the background, here she's the star singing in front of them.
She wasn't actually singing
@@suzettesmith3722 I know its dubbed. That's not what I meant though.
Jeanie's grey dress in that last number is GORGEOUS!!
Her wig in the second song I'm pretty sure was worn by Norma Shearer in Marie Antoinette
Am i the only 17 year old boy that love lucille ball ?
No I have read comments from some men (young black man who said he Loved Lucy) another young man who said he cried his eyes out when she died.
great chemistry
i am going to buy this on dvd
This would be a great way to show off a home theater system.

How talented was Red Skelton!
Just realized young Lucy was a dead ringer for my old college flame.
That sounds like the same voice they used to dub Rita Hayworth's voice in her musicals.
Good ear. Martha Mears dubbed Hayworth in "Cover Girl".
Exactly what I was thinking!
nobody noticed that man on our right is Red Skelton...
Needs a lot more Gene Kelly, he was the best part of the movie. "Do I Love You?" and the rousing Black Arrow speech and song were highlights. Funny how a movie comes alive when Kelly's on the screen.
susan lloyd thank you, I thought that was Gene Kelly. No one moves as smooooothy as that one, hat a dancer he was!
Actually, after this film was released it needed more Virginia O'Brien as her Solome number was a giant hit and she's given very little else to do.
Whenever I watch these I can’t get over how much Amy Pohler looks like her
That's interesting - I always thought Red Skelton looked like Conan O'brien!
In no way does Amy Pohler look like Lucy
Lucy was a beautiful lady.
Great clip, thank you! Lucy was a once in a lifetime legendary entertainer. But, she sang like screeching hen. :-D Her daughter Lucy Arnaz on the other hand, sings like a bird.
Are you watching this video? She sings well in this and other films. Stop being jealous.

About the dubbing, the last scene isn't dubbed
Christine Madeline You’re correct. There’s an explanation in the caption before each song.
Christine Crane She used to pretend she didn't sing good on I Love Lucy. Did she really in real life
She sang this w Ethel ❤️
Did Cole Porter write this song?

Yes but I'm only 12.

where to watch this movie ?
Urgent ! What is the name of the movie ????
Du Barry Was a Lady (1943)
These looks are drag race material honeeeeeey
Was that one in the lavender group Liz? 🤔
What movie is this?
Is Lucy really singing in this movie or she is lip singing in the movie
Even when actors were singing the part themselves they were still lip synching. In the normal production workflow, musical numbers are recorded first.

Do the movie.
Not Lucy’s voice 😆
I agree. Lucille Ball could not sing. Both matter how hard she tried.

@@antmagor I believe "Friendship" was originally from DuBarry Was a Lady and was interpolated into Anything Goes in later versions.

The singing is dubbed. Read the pinned comment at the top of all the comments.
I thought Lucy couldn’t sing?
Really good singers can sing Really badly and make you think that's how they sound
Bozza wozz pozozz.
They didn't care when they dubbed singing that it didn't sound similar to their voice like they do nowadays? It's so off and weird 😆

Same thing I said. Then too she was a heavy smoker
Heavy smoker is right...

Cole Porter should have sued MGM for being associated with this musical mishmash. Although mildly entertaining, it's a shadow of the original.
He didn't though
Anyone who can afford a 10-room apartment in the Waldorf Towers certainly doesn't need the money.
Oh, c'mon, that "Crepes Suzette" number would have been right up his alley!
Lucy did not sing this sorry to inform you of it

Lucy did it better with Viv
THANK GOD SHE DIDN'T USE HER OWN VOICE...SHOULD HAVE BEEN DUBBED IN "MAME"...RUINED THE WHOLE MOVIE...
meh???
Obviously Lucy's lip-synching to someone else's pre-recorded dub.
But is clearly doing her own for "Friendship!" Typical Hollywood cock-up. Did they think the audience wouldn't notice the difference in timbre?
Her voice was so feminine. A few years later she had begun to have smoker voice.
shes lip synching
Well...even when stars did their own singing they lipsynched to a prerecorded track. SOP for musicals.
Not Lucille Ball singing. Even Lucy knew she could not sing.
All the racy Cole Porter stuff was totally cut from this stupid film.
All?
Yeah, but the "Crepes Suzette" number, even though not written by Cole, is pretty damn good in my opinion...
That's my aunt
Such a dumb number. Can't imagine why musicals feel out of fashion.
