  • I flew to London last month! It was a longggg day, filled with a delayed plane and four trains as I journeyed from Chicago to my hotel in Westminster!
    In this vlog, I’m taking you all along with me as I fly from ORD to LHR in summer 2022, so you can see what overseas travel to Europe looks like right now in economy class!
    Of course, this vlog will include my train rides from Heathrow to my hotel in Westminster, because I know you all love some good Heathrow Express and London Underground footage as well!
    Hope you enjoy tagging along! Cheers and happy travels!

      We will be driving from the Waterloo area, so about 4 1/2 hours to 5 hours but it saves a lot of money over flying out of our airports. Miss the days when I lived in Portland and could take the MAX train right to the Portland airport.

    Now that we've just recently done a trip to London with a checked bag, I'm interested in going with just a carry-on and personal item and trying standby (non-rev with a fee, since my husband's airline doesn't fly to Europe, we have to fly a partner airline). I'm nervous, but I think it would be a blast. We've got SOOOO much more to see in London and the rest of the UK! I'm excited to see the rest of this series. 😊

    • @MeansToTravel

      Ahhh so sorry I just realized somehow I missed this comment when it first came through!
      I'm really glad to hear that your checked bag worked out fine, because I know there's been soooo much chaos this summer with bags - especially in the UK. My carry-on was packed FULL on this trip, I must admit, haha! Non-revving always stresses me out a bit with the uncertainty, so for this trip I was glad to always be with my stuff nearby. 😀
      Can't wait to share more videos from this trip soon!

    You should have avoided the express to Paddington, and jumped on the Tube directly from Heathrow, Piccadilly line straight through to Green Park, then change to Victoria Line, then just 2 stops to Pimlico! The Tube may be slightly slower, but only one change, and one fare £5.50... It probably isn’t that much slower than having to change twice... I no longer live in the UK, and miss London so much, I try get back as often as I can. Nice Video 👍

    • @MeansToTravel
      @MeansToTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I love that there are three options now, too! Normally I would have taken one of the two tube lines to save money, but I chose the Heathrow Express for two reasons (overall travel time and number of transfers with luggage). Since I arrived in London a day and a half later than I was supposed to on this trip, I wanted to catch up with my family and join in our itinerary (my first flight cancelled and my flight the next day shown in this video was REALLY delayed). Secondly, we were staying near the Pimlico tube stop, which is neither near the Piccadilly nor the Elizabeth lines, so I didn't want to do a ton of tube transfers. Always good to weigh the pros and cons of time vs money now that there are three great transit options from Heathrow!!! 😀

    We just returned from South Africa and Botswana from a delayed (for 2 years) visit and safari. It was great; however 2 days after we got back a little cough got worse and I had COVID. It is now 10 days later and it has largely passed. Regrettably, it led to my missing my granddaughter's wedding today. Luckily I am fine and we are going to go to Singapore, Bali, and Australia in August - all things considered. Travel while you can and enjoy what you can when you can.

    • @MeansToTravel
      @MeansToTravel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow! I've ALWAYS wanted to go on safari and I'm so jealous! What was your favorite part of that trip?
      I'm SOOOO sorry to hear you got COVID during the trip, though. I'm really glad to hear you're feeling better and it's passed. But what an absolute bummer about missing the wedding. My friend just got married at the end of May and 15 people ended up having to cancel last minute due to COVID diagnosis. It's scary out there and good to be safe!

    • @glenncamp733
      @glenncamp733 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We went to South Africa for a week before the safari and loved Cape Town, Francheshoek, and the wines of South Africa. We then went to Botswana on safari - it was a wonderful week. We were in tents, where hippos might walk through, each day we started early and went until dark with a break in the afternoon. Our tents were fine, and the staff was wonderful. I cannot recommend it enough. We went with Royal African Safaris and Adam Hedges was a great guide. Go if you can. It will change your life.

    I came back from two weeks in London in June 12th and you a fellow Chicagoan was just going over a little after I returned. Great to see more Chicagoans traveling overseas.
    What was immigration like for you? And also,try an Oyster card and add a Travelcard on it for the zones you like. I took the Piccadilly from Heathrow and it couldn't have been smoother.

    • @MeansToTravel
      @MeansToTravel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad to have a fellow Chicagoan traveling along!! As an American, immigration at Heathrow was the bio-scan machine where you don't have to talk to a customs agent. I DID have to talk to a customs agent at St. Pancras when I took the Eurostar to Amsterdam on the 26th, since I was leaving Britain and entering the EU.
      Yes! Love that there are three options to get into the city from LHR now! I brought my trusty Oyster card on this trip and topped it up for getting around London (despite the tube strike while I was there!), but I took the Heathrow Express on this journey to save time. If I had taken the Piccadilly or the Elizabeth lines to the Victoria line, it would have taken a lot longer, and at that point, I just wanted to see my family and make up for the delays I experienced at ORD and LHR. 😀

      @MeansToTravel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      O'Hare isn't my favorite personally. Especially because it currently needs a lot of maintenance work as I showed in the video (I'd say that work is needed in at least terminals 1, 2, and 3). Hopefully someday soon ORD will get a facelift like LGA did! But, at least O'Hare is convenient and is the closest airport to my home!

    • @glenncamp733
      @glenncamp733 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In 45 years of flying, never have I considered O'Hare a "favorite" airport. Perhaps compared to Laguardia maybe. The weather generally gets me there. Snow, thunderstorms, winds, too many flights, all add to my distrust of it. I will gladly avoid Chicago if at all possible, or if I have to go there, there is always Midway,. Southwest gets me through there rather quickly most of the time.

      Yes that's a great tip for folks to look into! The Elizabeth line is such a good option! I'm really glad it opened last year. I made it eventually, haha!

      I totally relate to you. It kinda sucks. That said, my best friend is a flight attendant and she's told me that the menu items are often totally different on different flights, so they aren't trained like waiters in a restaurant to know all of the ingredients in the food. It would kinda be like asking a train attendant if the Snickers or Milky Way bars on their carts have more milk chocolate in them...they probably would have no idea. So in this manner of responding, the onus gets put on the eater.

    • @MeansToTravel

      Customs was really easy, and I was able to get in the same line as an American as EU and British citizens where we did a bio scan rather than speak to a customs agent. When you do that, you wait in line, then when it's your turn you scan your passport, lower your mask if you have one on and look into the camera where the camera will identify you. Then the gates open and you pass through. So easy, I love it!

If you're looking for a Hilton property, too, the Hilton Tower Bridge or the Doubletree Islington have been my go-to's. My favorite 5-star hotel that I've stayed in has been The Athenaeum because it has some cute character. For neighborhoods, my personal preference is to stay in either Islington by Angel, Covent Garden, or Notting Hill/Hyde Park area, which all have good restaurants and tube line options. You do not need one to travel to the UK currently, assuming you have a US passport! You just aren’t allowed to stay more than six months.

      It's American Airlines (That's what the airline code AA stands for) 😀

    Eliz, I feel a bit of a time warp as you haven't finished your trip from 2 years ago yet!😀 It was shocking to see people not wearing masks indoors and on the plane--it seems a bit rude and ignorant. Glad to see you setting a good example!

      Oh, I was definitely in the minority! Haha yes, still have so many more vlogs to publish from the last trip in 2020! Just trying to keep everyone on their toes I guess 😂

    Nice trip! Did you say you had a large personal item for the trip? 🤣

      Yes, but I definitely don’t recommend it. It was a huge risk that I took on that probably wasn’t worth the gamble.
