It's not the winds that are the most lethal, but the storm surge. If this storm creates a 20 foot storm surge that would devastate infrastructure for hundreds of yards inland.
I owned a home on St. George Island. The highest point on the island is 14 feet above sea level. Even though I was up on stilts and bay front, 20 feet would take out the bottom floor.

I just have to bring this up. There are a lot of ignorant people who doesn't understand weather patterns and how wind works. There was an F5 tornado that hit jarrell Texas back in 1997. It wiped a subdivision called double Creek completely off the map. There was not any debris left, there were slabs and mud left. Cars people houses even the asphalt was ripped off the roads. And yet you have some clowns say that the only reason it happened was because the wind was so powerful it was because the tornado was so slow: 9mph forward moving speed and hitting homes for 3 mins straight. Many people think that the tornado was actually (140mph winds) instead of F5 (261 to 300 mph winds). 🤔 So this hurricane is very destructive with 140 mph winds, and it is pounding this entire state for HOURS not minuts... And not doing the damage THAT tornado did to that little subdivision.
People need to pay more attention to the damage left after the hurricane or tornado has moved off. When hurricane Michael hit just west of where Helene is expected to come ashore it was also moving pretty fast. It was still a Cat 3 when it hit Georgia and it destroyed thousands of acres of pecan trees in its path.
There is a big difference between 135 and 145 mph winds because wind energy is proportional to the square of wind speed. It is not quite like each number on the Richter scale being 10x the energy of the lower number, but it is not a linear relationship.
Take this down. "A better spot than Tallahassee" Rural doesn't mean unpopulated. It actually means weaker buildings and a higher chance of death for the people relative to population. "Better them than us" is all I hear from that.

The video says max winds are 140 mph. They're not, not according to the National Hurricane Center. The max winds are at 130 mph. Winds might eventually go up to 140, but right now, they're not. And this video and especially cable news will do whatever is necessary to HYPE this storm, like they do every other storm. HYPE means more viewers, higher ratings, and therefore greater profits.
